Notes: Did Jim really run this fast in 1969? | Jim Nicoll's new dragster for '69 used a 185" chassis by T-Bar. It used a 392 Hemi that used a Reath crank, M/T rods, and Ansen pistons. The roller cam was from Crower, along with the lifters and pushrods. The blower ran at 22% overdrive and on 80% nitro, the engine was making around 1,500 hp. A Hilborn fuel injection unit sat up top. The dragster weighed just over 1,300 lbs. | Jim started the '69 season at Sacramento on January 1. His first race of the year resulted in a first-round loss when Jim Herbert's 8.05/215 beat his quicker 8.02/188.28. He then went to Irwindale for an eight-car show on January 12. A 7.36/210.76 qualified second, but once again he lost in round one, this time, Larry Dixon's 7.40/207 beat Jim's 7.44/206.42. He then went to the AHRA Winternationals where he qualified #6 in the 32 car field and lasted until round two where he lost to Rick Stewart. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 7.07/212 qualified #9, but he fouled against Bennie Osborn in the first round. He ran well at Lions on February 9. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 7.12, but in the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.92/211.76 to beat Tom McEwen's 7.21/219. Unfortunately, in the semifinals he got out of shape against Larry Dixon and shut off. On February 16, he was in Las Vegas for the Stardust Open, and he finally got past the first-round when he beat Jerry Ruth. Don Prudhomme's 6.91 dropped Nicoll in round two. On March 2, he ran at Bakersfield for the March Meet. A 7.07/212.23 first-round effort dropped Jim Davis. In the second round, Hank Westmoreland fouled, and against Dixon in round three, Jim smoked the tires and lost. A week later (March 8), he was at Lions for an eight-car show. Jim qualified #7 with a 7.21 and in the first round, he improved to 7.12/206.42, but it wasn't enough to get around Bob Downey's 7.09/225. He was the low qualifier for an eight-car Pro Fuel Circuit race at Oklahoma City on May 10. There were 25 cars attempting to qualify and Nicoll's 7.06 was low. He beat Bud Dabler in round one, with a 7.18 and a 7.45 in the semifinals beat Richard Tharp. This set up a final between him and "Kansas" John Wiebe. Jim ran a good 7.13 in the final, but Wiebe ran 7.03 to get Low ET and the victory. On July 13, Nicoll was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, where he won the UDRA Nationals. His victory was tarnished however when he was given "popcorn" times of 6.29 in qualifying, a 6.17 (Low ET?), and 6.26 in eliminations, and a final round 6.26/234 to which runner-up Joe Krupinsky's 6.68/228 was very close. |
