Notes: Jake qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 6.364/223. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round, 6.296/201.76 to 8.978/80.93. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Johnston qualified #2 with a 6.20 and lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against Pulde. He then went to OCIR for a sixteen-car show. While he didn't reach the final, he did run a best of 6.27. On March 27, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven opener. He ran well there, lasting until the semifinal before the eventual winner Don Prudhomme, beat him. He also competed at Irwindale's 64-car show on April 9, but he failed in his attempt to reach the final. Jake was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Rain postponed the race until June 4, and Johnston's 6.430/224.43 (Top Speed) qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind John Lombardo's 6.42. He beat Eddie Pauling in the opening round with a 6.61/172.41 to a 6.91/145.65. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires, and his 6.97/151.51 lost to eventual winner Johnny White's 6.43/213.77. Joe Pisano did not run any additional NHRA events this year. Formerly listed 233.00 mph. We need confirmation of that (Bakersfield?) |

Notes: Lane was at Beeline in January for the Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #14, and in the first round, his 6.74/217.91 lost to Steve Harris' 6.60/215. Chris had his best-ever outing at the OCIR Fox Hunt race early in '76. Twenty-seven cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Lane's 6.49 qualified #5. He beat Tom McEwen, Jim Liberman, and John Lombardo to reach the final against Don Prudhomme. He ran a career-best 6.35/226.70 during eliminations. Although he failed to beat the "Snake" (few did) in the final, he made a good account of himself with his runner-up finish. Early in May, he was back at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #7 and lost to McEwen in the first round. He was at Bonneville Raceway for the final NHRA Division Seven race in August. He had set Low ET at 6.91 and was up against Frank O'Brien in the final. The "Phoenix" broke, and Frank soloed for the title. |

Notes: Leach ran Race Car Dynamics. | Steve ran well at the PDA Championships at OCIR. It was a twelve car field that had all cars run two rounds of racing with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Steve ran 6.80/207.85 to beat Gary Cochran who was driving Jim Terry's Mustang in the first round, and a 6.93/210.28 beat Jake Johnston in the "Pisano-Matsubara" Vega in his second race. His times were not good enough to get him into the final, but he was one of only three cars to win both his races. |

Notes: Lee was at Irwindale on January 12 for its Grand Premiere race. He qualified #12, and in the opening round, his 7.29 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.64. Joe's 6.96 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. That was a pretty good showing considering that the likes of Sush, Matsubara, Pat Foster, and Dale Emery, among others, failed to qualify. He picked up to a 6.84 in the opening round, but it was not enough as Tom Hoover beat him with a 6.79. On April 6, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. Lee lasted until the second round before losing to Bob Pickett in the "Lil Demon." At the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships, he beat Pickett in the first round, with a 6.75/206.89, but in round two, he lost to Pat Foster driving John Lombardo's Vega. |

Notes: Neil was at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race in January. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field. An opening round 6.33/218.97 beat Gary Densham, but in round two, he was shut off on the line with an oil leak, advancing Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" into the semifinals. The team then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals and qualified #1 with a 6.32 (Low ET). In the first round, he beat a motor-blowing Gordie Bonin with a 6.46/189.86. He got past a fouling Dale Pulde in the "Eastern Raider" in the second round, and a semifinal 6.72/199.10 beat Billy Meyer in Gene Snow's Vega. In the final, he ran Shirl Greer, and both had some traction problems, but Greer's 7.03/218 beat Neil's 7.08/220.58 for the win. Jim Terry and Leffler were hoping for more good fortune at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Once again, they qualified well, with a 6.333/225.56, taking the #6 position. In the first round, Neil slowed to a 6.88 that lost to Gary Burgin's 6.40. But Gary had crossed the centerline and was disqualified, and Leffler was back in the show. He didn't hang around for long, though, as he lost to a 6.37 pass by Don Prudhomme in round two. At the AHRA Grand American West at OCIR in March, 17 cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car show. Neil qualified #3 with a 6.66. A 7.21/196.50 beat a motor-blowing Bryan Raines in the first round, but his off-pace 7.56 in round two lost to Jim Dunn's 7.08. In May, Prudhomme reset the track record at Fremont with a 6.24, but Neil Leffler and Jim Terry amazed all by snatching it from him with a 6.18. By Indy, Neil was driving the California Charger car. |

Notes: Summernationals Champ one year, runner-up the other. Confirm photo is from 1974 or 1975 (note says 1974 at York). | Liberman started his '75 season at Fremont's New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. He didn't get very far as in the first round, his ailing 8.17 lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.48. Jim qualified #1 with a 6.30 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. He made it into the second round before smoking his tires and losing to Jim Dunn. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified fifth, but lost early. A 6.33 at Pomona qualified him seventh for the NHRA Winternationals and he beat Leroy Chadderton in the first round, before smoking his tires on a 7.11/166 loss to Mike Miller's 6.50/217. Qualified at 6.306/227.27 at Ontario Finals. Was that in the Vega or the Monza? |

Notes: Lombardo started the '78 season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at OCIR. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the final with a 7.25. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.25/236.22 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.23/238. But in the opening round of eliminations, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 6.93/205.47 loss to Tim Kushi's 6.47/223. Lombardo then won the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont in April. He set Low ET at 6.18 and a 6.33/213.77 grabbed the win when John Force broke in the final. John also set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.27/231.95. But once again, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Tripp Shumake. Not long after that (June 4), he was at Portland for the NHRA Division 6 race. Only six FC's showed, and he qualified #1 with a 6.36/202.24. A 6.33/213.27 beat Nick Harmon in the opening round, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal. He won that by beating Twig Zeigler's 6.52/221 in the final with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.25/229.00. In Mid-June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. John ran 6.24/227.84 to qualify #8, and an opening-round 6.28/222.77 beat an out-of-shape Tom Anderson. In round two, Bob Pickett's 6.46/221 fell to Lombardo's 6.29/229.59. The car stayed consistent in the semifinals, running a 6.26/233.16, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.17/230. On July 1, he won the OCIR Nitro Championships, setting Low ET at 6.05 along the way. He made a stop at Seattle for a best of three match race against Gordie Bonin. Lombardo won two straight with a 6.23 best. John then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.12/240.64 qualified #4, and he beat a fouling Tom Hoover in the first round. In round two, he ran another 6.12 at 236.84 to beat Gordie Bonin, but the car slowed to a 6.33/216.34 in the semifinals that lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.19/236. On July 29, John was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.20, and he set Low ET in round one, where his 6.07/223 defeated Dennis Geisler. Unfortunately, the car broke in round two against Dave Condit John had a great US Nationals, running steady 6.0s in eliminations, but lost a step and the match to Prudhomme in the semis. Best NHRA ET was 6.057 at Indy, where he also duplicated his 240.64 best. |

Notes: Russell was runner-up to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham on April 4. He beat Ray Sherman in the semifinals with a 6.84/208.33, but his final round 6.90/197.80 lost to the "Max's" 6.38/226. At the next IHRA event, the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo on May 2, he repeated that finish. Even the victor was the same as Beadle's 6.36/216 beat Russell's 6.82/164.80. Earlier, Long ran 7.14 and 6.81 to reach the final. Sacramento held an Funny Car race and Long picked up the victory there. His final round 6.31/221 beat Dave Condit's 6.37/221 in the "L. A. Hooker." The team also competed at the IHRA Dixie Nationals at Atlanta, but Russell lost early there. At the end of July, the team was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. All the cars made two runs and Russell ran 6.58 and 6.71. | We need to confirm that Russell ran 6.18/237 this year (or is that a mistaken duplication of Ron Colson’s similar numbers?) |

Notes: This was Russell Long's last ride. Russell filled in for a sick Billy Meyer at OCIR in February for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He lost to Pat Foster in the first round. |
