Notes: Dale Pulde drove the car in late 75 and early 76. Chapman Automotive ran iron block 426, then switched to Donovan. Pulde started his season at Fremont for the Nitro Bowl race. All cars made three runs there. In his first race, his 6.87/155.44 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.60/218. He solo'ed in the second round with a 6.53, and in the third, he smoked the tires to a 7.19 loss to Tommy Ivo's 6.66. He also competed at the Irwindale Grand Premier race, where he qualified #16 with a 7.94. Unfortunately, he broke on his burnout in the opening round, giving eventual winner Bob Pickett a solo into round two. Dale qualified #12 at Pomona, 6.316/199.11, but lost in the first round, to Jake Johnston when he lost a blower. That was Dale's last NHRA national event appearance until the World Finals, where he showed up in the Plueger & Gyger Mustang. |

Notes: Pulde always ran well at Pomona and continued to do so at the '86 NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.848/250.69 and improved to a 5.691/250.00 in the first round while beating Ed McCulloch's 5.827/240.64. A 5.777/244.56 advanced into the semifinals when Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian" for the first time, crossed the center line and ran 6.313/159.85. Dale smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 13.096/61.09 loss to John Force's 5.756/255.68. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.794/255.97 qualified #4. Rain came and postponed the race from March 16 to the 23rd, but Pulde was scheduled to run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and left Gainesville to run the IHRA event. He was probably happy that he did as he won the race. He qualified #2 and made his way to the final against Paul Smith, whom he beat with a 5.68/254.23 (Low ET and Top Speed). Dale was the number one qualifier at ADRA Spokane 8/86 at 5.747/257.14. At the NHRA Winston Finals with the RATT War Eagle, Pulde Qualified #9 with a 5.737/260.56. Pulde would face #1 Qualifier Johnny West in Round 1, running 5.809/250.62 to defeat West's 5.909/248.89. Pulde faced #13 Qualifier Jim Head in round 2, where Pulde won with a 5.868/248.27 while Head drifted toward the retaining wall and lost at 7.676/106.87. In the semis, Pulde faced #7 qualifier Billy Meyer, where Pulde Smoked the tires & watched the eventual runner-up Meyer streak away to the win at 5/712/246.71 as Dale's 10.096/76.69 followed. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Finished #3 in NHRA points in '85. - Mark York |

Notes: Radici failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals and the NHRA Gatornationals (need confirmation of this - I don't see Paul on either non-qualifier list. - BP). He was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships at the end of March. It was a 32 car field, and in the opening round, he beat Neil Leffler. He lost to Pat Foster in round two, who was driving the "Keeling and Clayton" car. Paul was at Portland in July for the big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, his late 6.89 in the opening round lost to Don Rae's 6.96. He got back in for round two, but this time his 7.09 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.54 in the "Plueger & Gyger" car. Paul qualified #12 at Seattle for the Fallnationals with a 6.705/210.28. He lost to Ed McCulloch in round one, 6.64/222 to 7.108/212.76. Bill saw this car run at the Coke circuit race at Dragway 42 in the Summer of 1975. He sent them a rendering of their car, and they asked him to design their paint scheme for 1976. Unfortunately, they did not come out until late that year and did not use a patriotic scheme as they had planned. Still, it was great to get a hand-written note with the request from Dave Wise! |

Notes: Johnny Loper started the season with an Arrow, but he changed over to a Mustang body at the end of June. Tripp was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.131/243.90 (Top Speed). He beat Gordie Bonin and Tom Prock in the first two rounds before losing to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.24/234 with a 6.36/225.56. He won the Division 7 Opener at Beeline two weeks later (February 18), stopping Kenny Bernstein in the final. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. It was a sixteen-car field, and he lasted until round two before the car shook the tires hard, and he shut off against Bernstein. Shumake set Top Speed at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #4 at 6.26/243.90 (again setting Top Speed). Unfortunately, he got crossed up and shut off in the first round against eventual winner Bonin. The following week (March 18), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.24 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. He lasted until the semifinals before being stopped by Dale Pulde's 6.21 in the semifinals with an off-pace 6.82. He also ran at Atlanta on April 22 for the IHRA Dixie Nationals, but he failed to reach the finals. Things didn't go too well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was rained out on April 29 and run on May 2. Tripp used up two motors attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, but he ended up as the first alternate with a best of 6.46/230.17. The NHRA Springnationals saw Shumake qualify #6 with a 6.18/236.84. But an opening-round 6.322/236.84 lost to Jim Adolph's 6.28/216. Rain postponed the IHRA Springnationals that was supposed to run at Bristol on June 17 to the following week, June 24. Eliminations there didn't matter to Tripp as he lost a blower in qualifying and the resulting fire wrecked the Arrow body. Shumake was OK. After that, the Mustang replaced the Arrow. The Pomona times were the Arrow's bests. |

Notes: Smith was driving for Dunlap for the first time in Jan at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.11/248.61, but his blower exploded in the lights in the first round. The car caught fire and destroyed the Tempo body, but Paul was OK. He had run 6.23/216.86 and won his race with Rick Johnson driving the "Hawaiian." The team made repairs and made it to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.951/244.69 qualified #13. Unfortunately, he lost to Ed McCulloch in the opening round, 5.94/249 to 8.06/104. Smith was at Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show early in March. In the first round, his 6.16/238.72 lost to Gary Cochran's 6.11/226. A week later (March 10), he won over an eight-car field at Atlanta Dragway. He qualified #3 with a 5.86/247.93. Tom Hoover smoked the tires and shut off against him in round one, and Smith advanced with a 6.45/188.67. Rick Johnson, driving the "Hawaiian," also overpowered the track in the semifinal, and Paul won with an easy 6.36/220.58. In the final, he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" car. For the third time, his competition smoked the tires against him. Paul's 6.01/240.64 got the victory over Mark's tire frying 9.09/94. Things didn't go so well for the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville. Twenty-two cars had been shown, and Paul was the second alternate at 5.996/232.07. By April, he was driving the "Custom Body" car. | Paul Smith went to drive the Castronovo car in the Spring of '85. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Smith finished runner-up to John Force at the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza. He lost traction and fell off to 7.36/125.87 to lose to John's 6.29/229.88. Paul earlier had run 6.13/216.86 in round one. Smith failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he was the second alternate at 6.17/241.02. He also raced at Rockingham in the first week of May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but lost early. Soon after, he was at Maple Grove for its Spring FC Nationals. Six cars ran with the two cars with the lowest ETs meeting in the final. Paul's 6.11/198.23 advanced to the final to face Bruce Larson. But in the final, the parachute fell out of the "Custom Body" car on the line, and Larson made a 6.28 solo for the victory. He did not race at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals but at Bristol early in June for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.02/223 in the first round fell to Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/260. He qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.04/241.80. In round one, an off-pace 6.68/139.44 lost to Tom McEwen's 5.92/240. His next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 cars showed, so qualifying was not much of an issue. He ran 5.91/224.21 for the #13 spot in the show. His 6.04/249.03 in the opening round lost to eventual winner Rick Johnson's 5.91/251 in the "Hawaiian." In mid-July, he returned to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 5.83 qualified #14. Unfortunately, he lost to John Collins in round one. He made his third IHRA start of the year at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #9, and in the first round, he beat McEwen with a 5.85/252.52. The car got out of shape against Bernstein in the second round, and Smith got disqualified for crossing the centerline. Paul qualified #15 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.95/248.61. He improved to a 5.85/253.52 in the opening round to beat McEwen's 5.97/243, and an even better 5.80/240.00 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/206 in round two. But he overpowered the track in the semifinals and smoked the tires in a loss to John Collins. His 5.734/255.24 qualified #5 for the NHRA U.S. Nationals at Indy. He slowed to 5.86/254.66 in the first round and lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.82/253. Shortly after, Smith was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.87/244.69. In the first round, both he and Johnson ran 5.75 (Smith at 251.25), but the "Hawaiian" won. The following week (September 22), he was at Englishtown for the U.S. All-Pro FC Championships. His 5.94 in the first round lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.89. He was at Darlington for the IHRA Stroh's Nationals in the first week of October. He qualified #7, and he made his way to the final. A 5.74/247.93 beat a tire-smoking Mark Oswald in round two, and his 5.81/242.58 defeated Billy Meyer in the semifinal. He lost to Bernstein in the final. Paul also ran 5.859/252.52 at IHRA Cincinnati. AKA Utica Flash. |
