Notes: Set Top Speed of the meet at the Bakersfield March Meet at 225. Paula was at Tri-City Dragway at the end of July for the third NHRA Division 3 race. She qualified #6 with a 6.98, but lost to eventual winner Jim Murphy in the first round. Later sold the car to the Houndog team in Britain. An early '73 issue of National Dragster claimed her bests of '72 at 6.72/217.86.

Notes: Gervase O'Neill was originally from Canada before moving to California. Gervase's brother Johnny, who opened up Johnny's Tune Up in Gardena, California, was his tuner. After racing a Chevelle and a Corvette, a new Camaro was built in 1972, complete with Chevrolet cast iron Rat Power. The "King Rat" Camaro was a regular at Southern California match races until 1977. The Camaro eventually ran a best of 6.67 with pure Chevy power. Only a couple of racers went faster with a Chevy. Gervase might not have been a big winner or as well known as other Chevy racers, but he goes down in history as one of the quickest fuel Chevy racers ever. 6.92 at Irwindale Raceway Grand Prix 8/74.

Notes: McCord was 15 years old. Also ran 7.11 at Fresno. | On April 15, Gary was one of only four Funny Car's that showed up at Sacramento for the California State Championships. He advanced past the only round run before the final when Ron Williams left before the tree was activated. In the final, he met Jim Murphy. Unfortunately, Ormsby's Vega broke and Jim took a solo 6.80 the win.

Notes: After running a Pontiac for the last few seasons, Paul Candies and Leonard Hughes got the Ford deal when Kenny Bernstein went to Buick for '87. The team started the year with Oswald driving the car to a 5.52/268.65 (Top Speed) in qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he won a close one over Tom Hoover when both recorded 5.76 (Oswald at 256.33). But in round two, the car overpowered the track, and Mark smoked the tires to 9.51/90.68, losing John Martin's 5.83/209. At Darlington, the team got a lot of photo coverage during qualifying when a blower exploded and lifted the body off the chassis. We needless to say, they failed to qualify. By the NHRA Gatornationals, a week later, a new body was installed. Mark qualified #3 with a 5.59/266.98 (Top Speed). But in the opening round, Mark was surprised by Bruce Larson, who ran a career-best 5.68/261 to beat his 5.74/265.17. More disappointment came at the April NHRA Winston All-Star event held at the Texas Motorplex. It was an eight-car show. Oswald ran 5.67/262 twice during qualifying and failed to make the cut (first alternate). The next NHRA race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 5.73/263.08 qualified #5 and an easy 5.97/250.00 in the first round beat Steve Hodkinson. But in round two, his 5.68/263.26 lost to eventual winner Bernstein's 5.61/264. The following week (May 3), the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. On one unofficial qualifying pass, Mark ran 263.62, which would have been good enough for Top Speed of the meet regardless of class if it was official. In the first round, his 5.74/251.39 beat Hoover, but bad luck in the form of a broken blower belt cost the team in the semifinal against Jim Head. The next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Mark qualified #3 with a 5.82/256.26, but then it rained, and the race was delayed one week. The team decided to go to Bristol instead for the IHRA Springnationals. Mark set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.64 at 263.15. A first-round 5.80/252 beat Scott Kalitta, while in the semifinals, his 5.77/260 took out Hoover. This put the team in their first final round of '87. Mark's final round opponent was Mike Dunn driving Joe Pisano's car, who had ripped off a 270 mph run in eliminations. Unfortunately, Mark spun the tires in the final and shut off, giving Dunn the win at 5.78/257. A week later (June 7), the Candies and Hughes team was at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. Finally, things "clicked" for them. Mark qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.75/263.92. Darrell Amberson broke on the line against him in the opening round, and Oswald advanced with a 5.73/247.25. A semifinal 5.57/263.92 beat a tire-smoking Doc Halladay and put the T-Bird into another final. This time, Mark faced veteran Ed McCulloch who had set a 5.51 track record earlier. The two had a great close race, with Oswald's 5.60/265.48 (Top Speed) winning over McCulloch's 5.60. With this win, Oswald led the IHRA Funny Car points standings over second-place Halladay. The team needed a little luck on the NHRA side of things. It didn't happen at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There Mark "only" qualified #10 with a 5.80/252.18. He improved to 5.76/256.33 in the first round to beat John Force's 5.75/250, but a tire-smoking shut-off 12.42/65.82 lost to D. A. Santucci's 5.80/253. The team followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Oswald took it easy in qualifying, running 6.04/248.07 for the #11 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with Bernstein. Mark was up for it, and his 5.88/238.24 put Bernstein's 5.95/245 on the trailer. Mark improved by two-tenths in round two, where his 5.68/260.26 (Top Speed) beat Al Hofmann. Unfortunately, he lost to McCulloch in the semifinals. In the first week of July, the team was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He set Top Speed during qualifying at 266.27. Oswald reached the final by running 5.75/254.23 in the first round over Jim White, who broke, and then he beat Darrel Amberson in the semifinal. This put him into the final against low qualifier Bernstein. The two had a great race, but Bernstein's 5.67/260 beat Oswald's 5.76/254 runner-up effort. RH | Also ran 5.428 and 5.449 at Ennis 10/87 and 5.492 at 87 Keystones. Confirmed 270.43 at Pomona Finals 87. Did the team run 276 somewhere this year? Direct drive or two-speed? Notes: Qualified 5th at the 1975 NHRA Summernationals (Englishtown) with a 6.38/231.36 pass. Speed held up as "Top Speed of the Event." - TN | Ran a 6.32/228.42 at OCIR Manufacturers' Funny Car Championship on 11/1/75. - RT | Ran 6.36/230.76 at Indy US Nationals 9/75 and 6.345/229.59 in qualifying at Ontario 10/12/75. | After driving Pete Everett’s "Lil’ Demon" for the first part of the year, Bob Pickett showed up at the Byron Manufacturer's Meet on June 15 behind the wheel of Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. It was a successful outing as all twelve cars ran round one, with the eight lowest ETs running in round two. Pickett’s 6.88/198.23 beat Shirl Greer's close 6.89/200 in the first round, and both advanced to round two. In this round, the two Low ET cars would then advance to the final. Bob faced Don Prudhomme, and the "Snake" had problems and shut down to a 7.64 loss (his first loss in eight years at this event) while Bob's 6.51/222.77 (Top Speed) was enough to reach the final against Gene Snow, who also ran a 6.51 in his win. Snow had just returned to driving after having back surgery. Both cars came to the line for the final, and the starter noticed an oil leak on Snow's car and shut him down. Pickett was signaled to run a single for the win, but he chose to shut down and wait for Snow's crew to fix the leak. After the leak was repaired, they lined up again, and they had a close race with Gene's 6.57/197 edging Bob's 6.58/175.35 for the win. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where a 6.44/199 qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field behind Raymond Beadle's 6.42 in the "Blue Max." Pickett beat Jim Nicoll in the first round, before losing to Denny Savage, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in round two. The team also went to Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals but failed to reach the finals. Shortly after that, Pickett was at Cayuga Dragway in Canada for the Gold Cup Championships. One thing about this car, the body was bigger than any other Funny Car competing on the track at this time, yet it constantly got Top Speed honors almost everywhere it was raced. At Cayuga, Bob’s first-round 6.59/221.67 set Top Speed while beating Bill Leavitt. He reached the finals against Beadle, but his 6.71/206.42 finished runner-up to the "Max's" 6.61/182. The car also showed its top-end horsepower in qualifying at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Pickett’s 6.38/231.36 (Top Speed) qualified the car #5. Unfortunately, he got out of shape and shut off in the opening round against Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car. It was then off to York's US 30 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, where Pickett picked up the win with a final round 6.51 over Al Segrini's 6.89. The team was back at Englishtown for a four-car show that saw Pickett run 6.56/225 over Prock in his first race, but then the Grand Am got sideways in the second round and lost to Dodger Glenn in the "Frantic Ford.” It was back to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals in early August. Pickett qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 6.51/207.37. Another 6.51 in the first round, beat Paul Smith's 6.61, but in the semifinals, he slowed down a tenth to a 6.61/218.97 that lost to eventual winner Prudhomme’s 6.59/222.

Notes: Bob Pickett debuted Mickey Thompson's newly painted Grand Am at the Nitro Bowl at Fremont. The car was still unlettered for the race. The team had trouble getting the car to "stick" as Pickett smoked the tires in all three of his runs. He won his first race where his 8.56/148.27 beat Raymond Beadle's even more smoked in 10.40 in the "Blue Max." A second-round 8.32 lost to Norm Wilcox's 6.51 in the "Hawaiian," and a 7.09 in his last race lost to Gary Burgin's 6.63. The team skipped both the AHRA Winternationals and the NHRA Winter Classic, but they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.301/187.50 qualified #10. But an opening-round 6.655/209.79 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.411/210.77. Shortly after that (February 21), he was at OCIR for its East/West meet. Six cars were competing that were to make three runs each. In Pickett's first race, his 6.38/214.28 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.48/232. The Grand Am broke in the second race and lost to Don Prudhomme. He won his third race easily as his opponent, Tommy Ivo, crossed the centerline. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bob's 6.521/230.17 qualified #11, and in the first round, his 6.57/225.00 beat Beadle, who smoked the tires to a 6.69/228.42 (see linked video). A second-round 6.65/221.13 beat Tom Hoover's 6.74/220.04, but tire smoke did him in in the semifinals, where his 7.09/193.96 lost to Shirl Greer's 6.50/206.42. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The third 200 MPH FC Championship was held on Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events, as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Hoover at a 6.08 and Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Bob's next stop was at Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. He qualified #1 at 6.40/240.37 (Top Speed). The 240 may not have been totally legit, but Bob ran 230/235 several times during the year. Pickett lasted until round two before his 6.47 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.31. The following weekend, he was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Championships. It was supposed to be a 32-car show, but only 30 cars showed. All were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. A 6.62/196.50 beat Bryan Raines in the first race, and he ran a decent 6.38/225.56 in the second race, but he lost to Gary Densham's 6.31/202. His times were not good enough to advance into the final. Early in May, he stopped off at Portland for the Oregon Open. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.40 qualified second to Prudhomme's 6.20. He improved to 6.26/225.56 in the opening round over John Collins' 6.49/202. Unfortunately, he fouled to McCulloch in the semifinal. The next day (May 9), Bob was in Seattle for the NHRA Division Six opener. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.56/215.82 qualified #5. An easy 6.89/209.30 beat Nick Harmon in the first round. He was a tad late in round two, and his 6.46/223.32 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.52/216. The M/T car was at St. Louis for the AHRA Springnationals in the first week of June. He qualified #5 for the eight-car show, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tom McEwen. Bob's 6.60/191.82 lost to McEwen's 6.33/221. The following week, Pickett was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.500/226.70 qualified #5. His 6.485/229.00 in the first round beat Larry Arnold's 6.506/196.07. Prudhomme stopped him again in round two; the "Snake's" 6.378/206.42 dropped his 6.411/222.22. Bob qualified #15 at Englishtown at 6.598/206.89. He lost a close one to Dodger Glenn in round one, 6.837/213 to 6.879/217. He was the first alternate at Indy at 6.295/220.04 but was the fifth qualifier at Seattle at 6.269/199.55. Tom McEwen upset him in round one, 6.40/213.27 to 6.41/229.00. Bob qualified #3 at the World Finals at 6.214/233.76. He beat McEwen in round one, 6.195/233.16 to 6.698/158.73. In round two, he beat Tom Hoover, 6.248/234.37 to 6.429/228.42. Don Prudhomme nipped him in the semis with a 6.251/220.04 to 6.326/230.17 decision. Green Valley info from Bret Kepner.

Notes: This team was tough and was able to surprise with a big number from time to time. Pott failed to qualify the "Mr. Norm" car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.411 (speed unknown) was the second alternate. In June, Pott was in Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. He had problems in the first round, but his 8.28 advanced as opponent Al Bergler shut off on the line. In the semifinals, his 6.64/209.78 beat Tom Prock's 6.70/200 in the "Detroit Tiger." He faced Tom McEwen in the final, and the "Goose" blew his engine while Pott picked up the victory with a 6.66. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, his 6.29 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. He beat low qualifier Billy Meyer in the first round with a 6.27, but in the semifinals, his 6.95 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.57. The team qualified for the PHR Championships, which was pretty good considering that Bernstein, Dale Pulde, Tripp Shumake, Ron Colson, and others failed to make the show. Unfortunately, John lost early. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Pott ran 6.19 early in qualifying, but, figuring that wasn't enough, he came back out and ran 6.139/231.36. That still wasn't enough, as he ended up as the first alternate for the field. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. Where did they run 236.22? | This car changed hands many times, eventually landing in Jim Wemett's garage. - Tim Simplot

Notes: The team ran the second half of the season, beginning at Indy, where Cristen qualified #7 at 4.921/306.12. She lost to a Jim Epler holeshot in round one, 5.02/303 to 4.987/301.60. Cristen was the firth alternate at Maple Grove with a troubled 12.599/66.34. Christen qualified #4 at Topeka at 4.971/263.56 and took a first round win over Al Hoffmann, 8.409/111.41 to an even more troubled 13.36/59. In round two, Tommy Johnson Jr. ended her day, 4.97/311 to 5.430/189.71. The team qualified #7 at Memphis at 5.026/292.71. Cristen took out Whit Bazemore in round one, 4.947/290.26 to 5.14/292. In round two, Tommy Johnson Jr. again got her, 4.99/300 to 9.049/88.22. That was the team's last event of the season. We formerly listed 4.915/309 for this car but that did not occur on the NHRA national event trail.
