Notes: Ed had the most dominant funny car during 1972, winning the NHRA Winternationals, Gatornationals, Springnationals, and Nationals. He also won the Bakersfield March Meet, driving his former car, the Jim Murphy owned "Holy Smokes" Cuda, and was the runner-up to Don Schumacher at the NHRA Summernationals. He also won the huge Seattle Seafair Funny Car Nationals in August. This car made its debut at Fremont on January 2 for the New Year's Funny Car race. On its first full pass it ran a 6.9. Ed qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.94, but he lost to Bill Leavitt in the first round. At the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline, 40 Funny Cars tried to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Ed ran 6.71 to qualify #2. He beat Henry Harrison in Mickey Thompson's Vega in the first round, but lost to Pat Foster driving Barry Setzer's Vega in round two. He won the NHRA Winternationals by qualifying #6 with a 6.93/213 and beating Jerry Ruth's 6.96/209 in the first round, with a 6.90/218. In round two, he set Low ET with a 6.65/217.91 over Butch Maas' 6.84/216. Ed had an easy run in the semifinals when Jake Johnston fouled against him. In the final, he faced Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Pulde had problems and slowed to a 7.22 while McCulloch scored the victory with a 6.68/215.82. He drove his old car to a win at the Bakersfield March Meet. He was back in the Demon the following week (March 12) at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Ed lasted until round two before he got out of shape and lost to Harrison. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.65 qualified #3 and in the opening round his 6.63/220.04 beat Lew Arrington's 6.74/213. That was followed by a 6.69 in round two over Joe Jacono's 6.87 and he got a solo in the semifinal when the Setzer Vega caught fire behind the line and was unable to run. He faced Larry Arnold in the final and McCulloch ran 6.54/224.43 to take the victory over Arnold's 6.68/218. The month of April started with a visit to Miami-Hollywood for its Big Go South race. It was an eight-car field and Ed qualified #1 with a 6.87/208. He beat Harry Hudson in round one, and he set a track record 6.71 in the semifinals while beating Paul Smith. He definitely had the edge in the final where he beat Ed O'Brien for the money. He then went to West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. Once again, he ended up in the final, but this time he lost to Bill Leavitt. He was runner-up again at OCIR's Big Four Championships in early May. It was a 32 car show and Ed started his run to the final by beating Bob Hawkins in the "Blue Blazer" Pinto. In round two, he beat another Pinto, the "Keeling and Clayton" car driven by Tom Ferraro. In round three, Mert Littlefield broke on the line against him. McCulloch then ran 6.98/197.36 to turn back Twig Zeigler and move into the final where he faced the killer car of Setzer. Pat Foster had driven it to a track record 6.52 in the semifinals so Ed was the underdog for their race. Sure enough, Foster shot to a 6.65/225 for the win as Ed smoked the tires and had to settle for the runner-up. On the final day of the Drag Racing Olympics race at Union Grove, Ed was running well. He beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals with a 6.52/216.86 and was set to race Don Prudhomme in the final when the "Snake" lost fire. McCulloch soloed for the win with a 6.50/217.91. He ran at the AHRA Springnationals in Denver, but failed to reach the finals. Things went much better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.78 and an opening round 6.73 beat Gary Henderson in the "Super Duster.” In round two his 6.79/206 beat Jake Johnston in Gene Snow's second car and a shut off 7.99 advanced in the semifinals when Foster fouled. This put Ed into the final with Leonard Hughes who qualified #2. In their race, Hughes got the jump and it looked like that was it for Ed, but the Cajun 'Cuda started to smoke the tires and McCulloch's 6.85/217.39 got the win light over Hughes' 7.08/196. 1972 NHRA Supernationals, OMS |

Notes: Ed was at Fremont for its Nitro Bowl early in January. All cars there were to run three rounds with the winner based on the number of wins in the competition. Ed won his first race with a 6.60/218.44 (Top Speed) over Dale Pulde's 6.87/155 in the "Chicago Patrol.” In round two, his 6.62 beat Jake Johnston, who got out of shape and shut off in the "Pisano-Matsubara" car. But in his final run, he ran his best ET, and it wasn't good enough. His 6.52 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.51, and McEwen's win gave him the title as he won all three of his races. Ed then went to OCIR for its season opener, where once again he set Top Speed, this time at 217.91, but lost to Johnston in round two. He did not go to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, nor was he at Beeline for the NHRA Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.24/225.56 and an opening-round 6.37/210.28 beat John Lombardo. A second-round 6.32/220.58 beat a tire-shaking Tripp Shumake, and in the semifinals, he broke a throttle linkage and slowed to 9.75 but lucked out as opponent Gene Snow fouled. He then faced Don Prudhomme in the final, and despite running a good 6.36/223.88, he still finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.26/227. He then went to OCIR for its East vs. West Meet, and while he didn't win, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.20/232.55. Early in March, Irwindale held its Night Opener. Eight cars made two rounds of racing, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Ed was nowhere near running quick enough to reach the final. In his first race, both he and Lombardo smoked the tires with the "Ace's" 7.40 coming out on top. He again smoked the hides in his second race, finally backing out of it to 13.15, while eventual winner McEwen won with a 6.67. McCulloch ran at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Jim Dunn. It was surprising that he failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He competed at the OCIR "Fox Hunt" race on March 20.27 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. His 6.50 got him the #6 spot. An opening round 6.61/200.44 beat Mike Halloran who broke. In the second round, his 6.43/211.76 lost to the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.32/182. A week later, McCulloch was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven Opener. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.50/227.84. In the first round, he got a solo as Steve Leach had crashed in qualifying. Ed advanced with a 6.63/196.93. But in round two, he had problems against "Jungle Jim" Liberman, and his shut off 12.41 lost to Jim's strong 6.19. On the Fourth of July weekend Ed was entered in the AHRA Nationals at Green Valley. Ed beat a broken Larry Gould while breaking himself on the run. Ed’s best NHRA national event times were 6.161/237.46 at Indy. Did Ed run 6.15 somewhere this year? | Indy runs were in the new Foster/Hume car debuted that August. In the pictured '75-'76 car, he also won the SIR Funny Car opener in early April with a 6.46 over Mike Miller's Boredom Zero Mustang II. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Won 1980 Cajuns over Paul Smith. | Meyer qualified #7 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.11/233.32, but failed to make the finals. Baton Rouge hosted the Division 4 Opener on March 9 and there finished runner-up to Raymond Beadle in a close 6.24/233 to 6.27/230.17 final. The following week (March 16) at Gainesville for the Gatornationals he qualified #6 with a 6.09, but crossed the centerline in the first round, and was disqualified. He was runner-up again in April at the Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins when he broke in the final after setting Low ET at 6.21. At the fifth annual Cajun Nationals, Billy qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.08. He beat Henry Harrison in the first round, with a 6.51/227 and in the semifinal a 6.32/226 beat Tripp Shumake. In the final he beat Paul Smith with a 6.66/215.31 for the victory. Meyer continued to run well, posting another victory on May 18 at Bristol in the IHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #5 and met low qualifier Beadle in the first round. A 6.13/239.36 (Top Speed), dispatched the "Blue Max's" smoky run. In the semifinals, a 6.44 beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.59. In the final, he met and beat Roy Harris' 6.53/226 with a 6.20/234.37. Things looked good for Billy heading into the NHRA Springnationals on June 8. A 6.18/226.70 qualified #5 and a first-round 6.09 beat Bob Pickett. In the second round, he got a single when Don Prudhomme was shut off with an oil leak on the line. Unfortunately, in the semifinal, Meyer's reverser locked up after his burnout, and he could only watch as Beadle singled into the final. He qualified #1 with a 6.23/238.09 (Top Speed) at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A first-round 6.35/225.56 beat Roy Harris's 6.66/198. In the semifinal, Beadle's 6.20/231 beat his 6.29/201.79. The Summernationals at Englishtown was the next national event on the NHRA schedule and Meyer qualified #4 with a 6.043. He made his way to the final to meet with Prudhomme. In the final an off pace 6.58/192.71 gave him a runner-up spot to Don's 6.10/238. A week later (July 20), he was back in the winner's circle at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern National. At first things didn't look so good when he only qualified #7 in the eight-car field. But he beat Paul Smith in the first round, and a surprisingly strong Len Imbrogno in the semifinals before meeting Dick Rosberg in the final. His final round 6.12/227.27 beat Rosberg's right there 6.12/230. He was back at Bristol on August 3 for the IHRA Summernationals and hoping for a sweep at Bristol after winning the Springnationals earlier in the year. Billy qualified #1 with a 6.20 (Low ET) at 221.67. He beat Al Baldwin in the first round, with a 6.26/224.43 and a 6.21/231.95 in the semis took out Roy Harris. In the final, a 6.65/227.27 was a tenth off of Paul Smith's winning 6.55/221 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." A week later, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He was the first alternate for the eight-car field with a 6.36/218.97, but when Tom Motry crashed in qualifying, Billy got in as an alternate. He showed what he could do by setting Low ET of the first-round with a 6.12 that beat Harris' 6.26, but in the semifinals, his reverser broke after his burnout, giving Gary Burgin a solo into the final. On August 17, Meyer got another runner-up finish at the Division 3 race at Beech Bend. A first-round 6.26/235.60 beat Ron Colson's quicker 6.17/236 in the "Hawaiian." In the semifinals, his 6.14/204.54 beat Beadle's 6.20/235 to move into the finals against Dale Armstrong. Meyer ran a strong 6.20/238.72 (Top Speed), but finished second best to Armstrong's 6.16/236. Meyer skipped running the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but he was at Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.044/236.84 and in round one, his 6.13/229.00 beat Armstrong's 6.39/220. In round two, a 6.18/234.37 got around Prudhomme's 6.27/226. In the semifinals, a tire shaking 6.46/188 lost to upstart Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's Arrow at 6.12/236. He continued to run well in IHRA competition as well, qualifying #1 with a 6.12/217.91 at Rockingham for the US Open. Dale Pulde did beat him in the first round, however and Meyer went on to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.21 qualified #6, and he lasted until the semifinal when Beadle beat him with a 6.01. The same song and dance happened at the season ending NHRA World Finals when Meyer was beaten again by Beadle in the semifinals, this time Raymond's 6.11 beat Meyer's off pace 6.88. In NHRA's season long points chase, Meyer finished second to Beadle. - RH |

Notes: Qualified #10 at NHRA Pomona at 6.543/205.01. Slowed to a nine-second time in a first-round loss to Dale Pulde. That was MIke's only NHRA national event. |

Notes: Giant Jim Moore moved to funny cars from top fuel. | Jim was running his Maverick at the Irwindale Coca-Cola Championships in April. Unfortunately, the car broke on the line in the first round, giving Chris Lane a solo into round two. |

Notes: At Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, Moore qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 7.18/193. Traction was poor, and in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Gary Densham. Jim failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was in Seattle in the summer for its 64 car show, and while he didn't reach the final, he did run a best of 6.43. Qualified nicely at OCIR World Finals at 6.107/226.13, followed by a first-round loss to Gary Burgin, 6.04 to 6.46/187. |

Notes: After Shirley destroyed her Buttera built '72 Mustang at Dragway 42 during the second round of eliminations at the IHRA Summernationals (August 11/13), she borrowed Don Schumacher's 1970 Indy winning Buttera built Barracuda. She had the Cuda repainted and lettered and tried unsuccessfully to qualify for the field at Indy (L&M photo from IRP). At the 1972 IHRA Nationals (DIMS October 13/15), she qualified ninth (6.70/207) and lost to low qualifier Don Schumacher in the first round. |
