Notes: Frank attempted to qualify at NHRA Gainesville but was the final DNQ (times unavailable). In April, he also failed to qualify at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He was at Englishtown on May 4 for the NHRA Division One opener. His 6.31/222.22 qualified #3 for the eight-car field, but he broke against Bruce Larson in the opening round. Frank was a DNQ at the PHR event in 1980 at 11.44 seconds. Frank used comp number 109 while in the Mello Yello car. His normal comp number was 232. 109 could have been an IHRA number? |

Notes: Pedregon started the season at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January He and crew chief Lee Beard made six passes with a best of 5.33/272.06. Tire shake killed three runs, but the other two were 5.52/257.28 and 5.39/269.29. At NHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, Cruz set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 5.10/285.26. He eased to 5.87/170.68 in the first round, when Jerry Caminito broke, but in the second round, his 5.20/286.44 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.12/284 in Joe Pisano's car. The following week, he was in Arizona for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a track record 5.07 at 284.18. He went on to win the race by beating Tom Hoover with a 5.13/288.00, Kenji Okazaki with a 5.13/289.01 (Top Speed), and in the semifinals, his 5.20/287.90 took out Del Worsham's 5.27/283. In the final, he faced Jim Epler, and Cruz won with a 5.21/263.31 over Epler's troubled 9.56/89.65. NHRA's next stop was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. Cruz qualified #4 with a 5.14/286.16. Once again, Cruz ran well, running 5.15/279.50 in the opening round over Worsham and a 5.22/277.26 beat Chuck Etchells' identical 5.22/276 in round two. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 5.17/281.09 in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.04/294. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.20/285.71 qualified #6. He beat Caminito in the first round, with a 5.29/280.72, but a 5.27/250.83 lost to Force's 5.09/292 in round two. |

Notes: Pickett was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals early in July. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.39/227.84 best failed to qualify. Pickett ran his first "five" at Maple Grove on September 14 for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. It was a 5.99/242.91 that failed to qualify, but it was the first alternate. That was his only NHRA national event of the year. Bob ran the car with both "Hosemate" & "Circle Oil" lettered on the same red & white paint scheme in '86. |

Notes: Santucci was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified for the sixteen-car field, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Kenny Bernstein. He raced at the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza. The ND article only said, "I hope D.A. Santucci's Black Magic Funny Car racer gets over its cold." It's hard to tell what that was about. In May, he was at Atco for its May Madness race. This was his first trip to Atco in twelve years. Four FCs were running, and in his first race, he ran 7.23/155.97 to beat an out-of-shape Bobby Lagana. In the second race, he faced Bruce Larson, driving his new Corvette. The two had a great race that saw Larson's 6.37/226 defeat Santucci's 6.38/233.76. At the 1985 IHRA SummerNats, Edgewater Raceway Park, Cincy, OH, he qualified 10th at 6.01/226 but lost in the first round to John Lombardo. DA qualified #11 at 5.853/246.98 at the Keystone Nationals. In round one, he upset Ed McCulloch, 6.027/195.73 to a 9.94, but lost round two to 6.03/209 to 6.377/215.31. That was DA and Barb's only NHRA national event in 1985. |

Notes: Dean started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9 with a 5.20/282.04. He beat Richard Hartman in the first round, with a 5.24/283.01. Things didn't go as planned in round two. He beat his opponent Cruz Pedregon as planned with a 5.22/285.26 beating Pedregon's 5.25/283, but in the shut down area, Dean had trouble getting his car stopped and he ended up hitting the hay bails at the end of the track and wrecking the Firebird body. For the semifinals, they installed their old Probe body. Unfortunately, a 5.25/283.46 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.11/278. At the Quality Care Nationals, Skuza qualified #10 with a 5.28/280.63, but he fouled away a 5.34/261.32 in the first round, against eventual winner John Force's 5.24/282. |

Notes: Photo from 1980 Pop Rods, US 131 Martin, MI. Ran 6.12/234.37 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80 | Smith had one of his best seasons ever behind the wheel of Larry Coogle's Firebird. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.06/238.09. A 6.11/229.59 beat a crossed up Ed McCulloch in the first round. In the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to Dale Pulde. The following week (March 23), Paul was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There, a 6.31/230.76 qualified #1 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he lost to Pulde in the first round. He won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins in April, stopping Billy Meyer who broke in the final with a 7.05/217.91 (Top Speed). On April 27 Smith was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field that was tough to crack into as Don Prudhomme, Raymond Beadle, and Dale Pulde among others failed to do. But sitting in the top qualifying spot was the "Sting's" track record 6.02 at 238.09. Smith made it to the final by beating a tire-smoking, shutting off Kenny Bernstein with a 6.16/234. In the semifinals, his 6.22 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." That put him in the final against Meyer. Paul had problems and shut down to an 8.21/108.00 that lost to Billy's 6.66/215. At the rain postponed IHRA Springnationals, Smith didn't have a very good outing. He qualified last in the eight-car field and a 6.37 in the first round, lost to Roy Harris' 6.30. He won the NHRA Divisional race at Gulfport International on June 1 and a week later he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.19/230.76 qualified #7. He lost to alternate John Collins in the first round. Paul was at Milan Dragway in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.19. He lost to eventual winner Meyer in the first round. Paul won the IHRA Summernationals at Bristol. He qualified #2 with a 6.23/234.37 just behind Meyer's 6.20/221. These two would work their way to the final. Smith started by running 6.48 over Mike Mitchell and in the semifinals his 6.42 beat Beadle who was driving the new Omni bodied "Blue Max." In the final, Smith's 6.55/221.13 got him and victory over Meyer's 6.65/227. At the NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend, Paul's 6.47/226.70 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Dale Armstrong's 6.21/227. At the PHR Championships, Smith failed to qualify with a 6.37 (third alternate) best. He also lost early at the US 131 Funny Car Nationals in August where Tom McEwen beat him. Smith was disappointed at Indianapolis where his best of 6.12/234.37 failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals. |
