Notes: Ray Higley was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.663/250.48 ended up as the fourth alternate for the show. He was the fourth alternate at Houston as well, running 5.807/261.02. Ray was the second alternate at Memphis at 5.900/254.09, but he got into the show. He dropped a 5.36 to 5.801/256.82 decision to Cruz Pedregon in round one. Ray was the first alternate at Englishtown at 5.808/222.18, but he got into the show as an alternate again. He broke in the first round, against Al Hofmann. Ray qualified #15 at Columbus with a solid 5.559/268.89. Unfortunately, it was he who could not make the call in round one, and Rick Sherrell took his place. Ray was the third alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 5.520/266.35 best. He was also the third alternate at NHRA Ennis with a 5.579 at only 198 mph. And then, you guessed it, the third alternate at the World Finals at 5.765/189. |

Notes: Steve qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.740/255.17. Another 5.741 at 241.93 in the first round beat Johnny West's 5.83/250 in the "Hawaiian." Unfortunately, he broke in round two, advancing Dale Pulde. In May, he was at Tulsa for its Springnationals race. A 6.29/222.22 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. His 6.59/211.76 in the opening round fell to Doc Halladay's 6.22/200. Steve was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals near the end of May. He qualified #8 at 5.95/237.59. The race was postponed one week due to rain, and Hodkinson did not return for the "rain date" as he went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he smoked the tires in round one and lost to Mike Dunn. In the first week of June, he was at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. It was a tough weekend for him as he went through 24 pistons at this race. He qualified #6, and his 6.20/179.64 advanced in the first round when John Force broke. Unfortunately, Steve could not repair it in time for his semi-final race against Ed McCulloch. He was also at Kansas City International in July for its independent Summernationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.07 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Darrell Amberson which Steve lost. He attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals but ended up as the fourth alternate at 5.98/237.71. On August 1st, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the Motorcraft FC Challenge race. It was an eight-car show that was to have all eight make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In the first race, his 5.88/228.19 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.63/258. In the second race, he shut down but still won as Mark Oswald lost a blower belt and coasted across the line behind Hodkinson. His times were not quick enough to advance into the final. He went to Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, but his 6.01/237.65 best failed to qualify. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Open. In round one, he lost to Halladay. Steve's best times of the year were from NHRA Pomona. He ran an ad to sell T-shirts. Buyers would get names on car as sponsors in '87. Photo from 1987 US Nationals. |

Notes: Won emotional NHRA Ford Nats '92 (first NHRA national event win since 1979) just weeks after "Ma" Hoover passed away. Photo from 1992 US Nationals. | Hoover qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.42/273.72. He lost to John Force in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #9 with a 5.47/272.47. He picked up to a career best (to this point) of 5.26 at 273.05 in the first round, to beat Gary Bolger's 5.44/262. Another strong pass of 5.32/259.14 beat John Force's 5.46/271. In the semifinals, he beat Johnny West with a 5.34/265.87 to go into the final against Richard Hartman. Once again he made a strong run, clocking a 5.27/263.46 for his third career NHRA National event win over a tire smoking Hartman. It was Tom's first win since the '79 Winternationals, and it came just a month after his mother had passed away from heart disease. Hoover went on to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals where he ran 5.30/253.80 to qualify #6. A first-round 5.72/193.25 beat Whit Bazemore's 5.78/178. In round two, he advanced with a 5.35/238.98 when Hartman fouled. In the semifinals, his 5.78/183.18 lost to Gordon Mineo's 5.34/250. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #4 with a 5.79/228.42. He worked his way into the final by beating Whit Bazemore in the first round, (both ran 5.62, Tom at 261.32), and Paul Smith in the semifinals with a 5.58/260.19. In the final, he stopped Del Worsham for the victory with a 5.66/249.58. Next stop was Gainesville the following week (March 22) for the NHRA Gatornationals. Things didn't go so well there as he lost in the first round, to Chuck Etchells after qualifying #12 with a 5.39/271.98. He debuted his new Dodge Daytona at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. |

Notes: Photo from 1975 US Nationals. Jake drove for Pisano at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He was substituting for Sush Matsubara due to injuries Sush had received from a motorcycle crash the week before. The car suffered a bad fire at the Bakersfield March Meet. Jake qualified the Vega with a 6.46/203.16 for the #8 spot in the twelve car field. A first-round 6.29/225.56 beat Gordie Bonin's 6.46/223, but in round two, his 6.71 lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde's 6.46 in the "Eastern Raider.” Unfortunately, at the top end of the track, a gasket let go and the car went up in flames. Jake got it stopped and got out OK, but the car was charred pretty good. It didn't take the team long to repair the damage as just two weeks later (March 16), they were at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West. It was a sixteen-car show and Johnston qualified #4 with a 6.70. He made his way to the final by beating Leroy Chadderton with a 6.86/208.81 followed by a 6.90/187.50 in round two over Bob Pickett who was driving the "Lil' Demon.” A semifinal 6.95/186.33 trailered Gary Densham and moved him into the final. His final round opponent was the #1 qualifier (6.57) Tom McEwen. The edge would have to go to McEwen as he ran a best of 6.58 during eliminations. The final turned out to be close; Jake improved to 6.78/220.04, but still lost to McEwen's 6.77/213. He lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round, at the Northern Nationals at Fremont. In May, Jake won the Irwindale Fox Hunt race, stopping Gary Burgin in the final. Another win at Irwindale came in June at its Doubleheader event. It was an eight-car field and Johnston beat Densham and Fred Mooneyham to reach the final. There he faced Jim Dunn. The two had a good race with Jake's 6.57/223.26 (Top Speed) getting the measure of Dunn's 6.67/220. Jake qualified #13 at Indy at 6.368/223.32. He lost a close first-round match to Gene Snow, 6.283/230.17 to 6.322/214.28. The team qualified #10 at Ontario at 6.331/225.00, but again, lost in the first round. Norm Wilcox’s outstanding 6.164/218.97 took the measure of their improved 6.311/220.04. ET from Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/75 |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Drag Racing List has 5.845/250.69 times from Maple Grove national event. | Larson attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.31/168.53 failed to make the field. In March he faced off with Dominic Santucci for a best of three match race at Englishtown. Larson won two straight running times of 6.28/230.76 and 6.17/238.09. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his best of 6.28/225.79 failed to qualify. He competed at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.22 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.00 before losing in the semifinals. Bruce got into the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 6.25/220.26 held the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Johnny West in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He qualified #13 with a 6.02/237.21 at the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Magazine Nationals and Larson was there, running a 6.03/233.76 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier (5.62) Kenny Bernstein. Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.00/144.69 that lost to Kenny's 5.75/254. In late June he followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. Only twelve cars showed for the sixteen-car show so qualifying wasn't a problem. Bruce ran a 6.12/240.12 to qualify #11. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off, losing to Billy Meyer's ailing 9.22/91. On July 2, Englishtown held its Funny Car Spectacular. Larson lost to West's 5.78/258 in the first round, with a 6.31/184.04, but he got back in on the "break rule." So in round two he ran Roy Harris, but Bruce had problems and shut off to a 9.10-86.04 that lost to Roy's 6.39/180. He was back at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals where he ran a 5.99/243.11 to qualify on the "bump." In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover. On August 3, he competed at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #8 with a 6.20 in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Scott Kalitta in the first round. The following week (August 9), he was at the US Funny Car Nationals where he ran a 6.19/236.22 to qualify #6 in the six car show. He lost early. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, his best of 6.07/237.59 was good for the sixth alternate spot. He also attempted to make the show at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but he had problems and failed to qualify with a 7.32/118.18 best. In the season long NHRA points chase he finished #19. |

Notes: Steve didn't run nitro until 1990. He ran these numbers at an IHRA event that year. We need to determine how the Tempo fit in to the timeline with the J. Ed Horton T-Birds. Steve did not run any NHRA national events in 1990. |

Notes: Lombardo began the year at Pomona in the Number 8 spot with a 6.140 240.84. John defeated John Force to win the 1983 NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Force smoked the tires almost immediately in the final but recovered and went after Lombardo, who began to spin the tires about 200 feet down the track. The two raced to the finish line together, with Lombardo taking a narrow 6.32 to 6.32 victory. - NHRA | Best ET of the year at 5.880 at the World Finals at a best NHRA national event speed of 243.24. Where did John run 249.30? Set Low ET and #1 qualifier at NHRA Atlanta at 5.933. | As mentioned, John qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.12/232.55 beat Tom Hoover's 6.33/220. In round two, he smoked the tires to a 6.21 that lost to Tom McEwen. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, John's 5.93/238.72 qualified #8. in the opening round, his 6.01/236.84 beat Tim Grose's 6.05/235. But in the second round, his 6.05/239.36 fell to Dale Pulde's 6.02/241. He qualified #1 at Atlanta for the eight-car field at the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.93/232.55. He then beat Tom Anderson before losing to Al Segrini in the semifinal. Lombardo failed to qualify at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.17/231.93 failed to crack the 6.08 bump. Things went better at Columbus, where his 6.08/238.72 qualified #13. Still, a first-round 6.10/236.22 fell to Segrini's 6.03/241. He also suffered a first-round loss at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where Don Prudhomme got him in round one. John qualified #10 there with a 6.02/240.64. Shortly after that, he was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Those eight-car fields were tough to qualify at, and this one was no different. He ended up as the second alternate with a 6.31/227.27 best. He was disappointed at Indy, where his 6.02/234.37 best failed to qualify for the all-five second show at the NHRA US Nationals. |

Notes: Times confirmed for Sonoma 94, but need to find out if the other times Paula ran this year were in this car or the Trapper Racing car. OR. IS this the Trapper Racing car, just with other sponsorship? | Paula was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where she was the sixth alternate with a 5.75/248.13 best. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, she qualified on the "bump" with a 5.57/261.02, but "windowed" the engine block and was unable to run in eliminations. |

Notes: Rear engine blown fuel. This car was run by McEwen in 1965 and into '66. He had crashed an earlier one in 1965. McEwen set Top Speed at the 1966 Winternationals at 170.45. He then sold the car to Fred Goeske. McEwen drove the car at first for Goeske, before turning driving over to him. Goeske ran this car into 1968 season. | Tom set Low ET and Top Speed at Irwindale for the AHRA Winternationals on February 13 with a 9.21/178.92 blast. Notes: Billy had a strong year in '84. He won three races in NHRA and another three in IHRA and finished second to Mark Oswald in the NHRA Funny Car points chase. He also ended the season with the second quickest Funny Car time ever, a 5.628 at the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol. In January, Billy started the season by qualifying for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway with a 5.96/225.00. He beat John Martin in the first round with a 6.02/200.89, but he broke an oil line and advanced Tom McEwen in the semifinals. As good as he ran in NHRA, he started the year by failing to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, where he was the second alternate at 6.07/234.98. A new Plueger-built Mustang debuted in March, and it qualified #3 at Atlanta's eight-car field on March 11 with a 5.94/232.55. His 5.93/228.42 advanced when Al Hofmann broke in the opening round. In the semifinal, he and Kenny Bernstein had a great race that saw Meyer's 5.81 (Low ET) at 248.61 defeat Bernstein's 5.87/252. He faced Gary Southern in Bill Dunlap's Tempo in the final, and Gary went up in smoke while Meyer ran 6.02/223.88 for the victory. He qualified #11 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.93/243.90. A first-round 5.85 beat Frank Hawley's 5.91 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In round two, a 6.17/226.70 got around Al Segrini, but in the semifinals, both he and John Collins smoked the tires, and John's 6.45/216 beat Meyer's 6.44/239. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, a 5.90 qualified #4. His 5.92/221.81 beat Ron Correnti in the opening round, while a 6.14 advanced in round two. In the semifinals, his 5.88 lost to McEwen's 5.89. Then things began to click, starting with the NHRA Southern Nationals. He won four straight races (two NHRA and two IHRA) and averaged 5.83 for 19 runs in those events. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.78/249.30 and went on to win over Kenny Bernstein in the final with a track record 5.73/252.80 over Bernstein's 5.80/254. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he qualified #1 with a 5.73 (Low ET) and beat Oswald in the final for the $31,000 purse. The next win came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. In the first round, Billy qualified #8 in the eight-car show but beat a tire-smoking Bernstein with a 5.94/250. In the semifinals, he soloed to a track record 5.81/246 when Dale Pulde could not appear. He took his third win in the final with a 5.92/249.30 over Jim Head's 6.01/245. The crown jewel of this four-race winning stretch came next, the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol on June 3. He beat low qualifier, Don Prudhomme, in the first round and then Sherm Gunn in round two with a 5.86/236.84. And in the semifinals, a 5.81/243.24 beat Denny Savage. In the final, he faced Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird and won with a 5.776/252.10 over Mark's 5.97/251. The win was worth a record $41,500. In comparison, the two NHRA wins were worth slightly over $10,000 each. His good run ended the following week (June 10) at the NHRA Springnationals. Although he qualified #1 with a track record 5.81 at 249.30, he lost in the first round, with an off-pace of 6.27/207.31 that lost to John Force's 6.06/242. He made another $10,000 at the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals in Canada, where he qualified #2 with a 5.84/250.69 and beat Ed McCulloch in the final with a 5.85/247.25. At the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 8, he ran horribly; his 6.49/157 qualified last in the sixteen-car field, and a tire-smoking shut-off 10.09/71 lost to McEwen's 5.88/245 in the opening round. A week later, he did make the finals at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.88 qualified #12, and he burned several bearings on his 5.85/240 in the first round that beat McCulloch's quicker 5.82/252. The team installed a new engine for round two, where his 5.88 beat Mike Dunn's 6.15. In the semifinal, his 5.79 took out Hawley's 5.85. In the final, he met Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max," and his 5.97/248.61 lost to Beadle's 5.95/247. He lost early at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, and the week after that, he was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Meyer qualified #1 and lasted until the second round before losing to Oswald. Billy ran a confirmed 254.95 at the NHRA World Finals. We assume the 255.68 is an IHRA time. It seems legit, but we need confirmation. Photo from Indy 1984. |
