Notes: Craig Epperly began driving for Joe Pisano in May. At the second Division 6 race at Baylands, they set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.01/223.88. Craig lost early, falling to Tom McEwen in the first round. Epperly qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.13/229.00. He lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. At the Mile High Nationals, the team qualified #2 with a 6.205/231.36. Epperly defeated Tom McEwen in Round 1, 6.275/230.17 to 6.412/234.37, but fell to a Raymond Beadle holeshot in Round 2, 6.251/226.69 (.548 RT) to 6.192/230.17 (.619 RT) – a mathematical difference of four feet at the stripe! The team then entered a rough patch in NHRA competition with DNQs at Brainerd, Indy, and Fremont (6.126/229.00, 6.130/238.09, and No Time, respectively). Epperly bounced back at the NHRA World Finals at Orange County with a 6.002 at 247.25 (Top Speed). He lost in round one to Don Prudhomme, 6.03/241 to a shut off 11.19/66. Epperly drove the HB Gold car one last time at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, and Al Segrini drove for Joe there. Gorgeous candy apple red, black car. Details from Joe Moore. Notes: AKA Chain Lightning. Greer was a perennial Division 2 contender and won the division Funny Car title in 76, 77, and 78. Photo from 1977 D3 WWCS Indianapolis Raceway Park. | The 77 Plymouth Arrow, which was short-lived, was built by Jaime Sarte. It was also the second Arrow body out. Prudhomme had the first. - Brian Greer | Shirl ran 6.45 at Milan. Shirl’s best NHRA national event times were 6.60/222.22 at the Gatornationals. He attempted to qualify at Indy, but was a 12.04-second DNQ. Those were Shirl’s only two NHRA national event appearances. Formerly listed 6.235/230.76 for 1977 in this car. We believe those times reflect 1981 performances. Let us know if you have evidence to the contrary. |

Notes: Tim failed to qualify (fifth alternate) at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.547 226.69. He then qualified #5 in the eight-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.17/228.42. Qualifying #5 meant racing the #1 qualifier in the first round. John Force qualified #1, but he went into tire shake in their race and shut down while Tim advanced with a 6.66/190.07. In the semi-final, his 6.26/223.58 lost to Henry Harrison's 6.14/240. His 6.075/233.16 qualified #16 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A first-round 6.054/235.84 lost to John Lombardo's 6.01/236. By May, Grose was running his new Corvette. |
