Notes: This was the car to beat on the UDRA circuit. Bob started the season by qualifying on the "bump" at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 7.51/180. In the first round, he lost to Roy Hill when he had clutch issues and slowed to 7.92/184. He was at Byron Dragway for the UDRA Springnationals in May. Olson ran 7.72/178.92 (Top Speed) to qualify #2. The car was consistent, running 7.74/177 over Gary Duckworth and 7.71/178.21 to reach the finals where he was to meet low qualifier Don Coonce. Don had broken in his semifinal win and was a no-show for the final. Bob ran a solo 7.70/178.21 for the victory. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, the team didn't qualify so well (#14), but they did well in eliminations. In the first round, Hill fouled, and in round two, Bob Glidden got out of shape in his T-Bird and shut off. This put Olson into the semifinal, where he lost to the race's eventual winner Darrell Alderman in Jerry Haas' Camaro. He ran an incredible speed of 182.18 while qualifying #8 at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Charlie Peppers in the first round. The next IHRA race was the Northern Nationals at Milan. Bob qualified #11, but in the first round, he fouled against Hill. At the NHRA Summernationals, the team was #8 in qualifying, and Olson beat Bob Harris in round one, but in the second round, he fouled against Glidden. He had to gamble on the 'tree as Glidden ran 7.41 compared to his 7.63 on the run. Back on his "home" turf, the UDRA, he won the Hoosier Nationals at Muncie. He had only qualified #4 in the eight-car field with an 8.05/178, but he beat Jeff Wick's Arrow in the first round, with an 8.34/167, and in the semifinals, he picked up to a 7.88/179 to beat a wheelstanding Jim Feurer. He was up against low qualifier Bill Kuhlmann in the final, and the two had a great race with Bob's 7.75/179 winning over Bill's 7.72/182.81. The PHR Championships were running under IHRA rules. Bob qualified #5 at 7.54/184.52, but he fouled against Hill in the first round. He then went to Wisconsin International Raceway for the UDRA Summernationals. Bob's 7.88/177 qualified #2 behind Bill Kuhlman's 7.83/185. These two would work their way into the final. Olson ran 7.81/177 over Charlie Hnatek, and he then dropped Jeff Wick in the semifinal. Bill had been running slightly quicker in eliminations, running a 7.78 best. Olson ran the better time in the final with a 7.85/173, but he lost to Kuhlman's quick-leaving,7.90/182. To add insult to injury, Olson had held the track record coming into this race at 7.88, but Kuhlman now reset it to 7.78. He continued to qualify well at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He got the #7 spot in the sixteen-car field and defeated Terry Walters in the opening round. Unfortunately, he lost to Darrell Alderman in round two. In September, Olson was a little off his usual pace at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. He only qualified #10, and he lost in the opening round of competition. 237 IHRA, UDRA racer. Notes: Charlie raised a lot of eyebrows at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. During qualifying, he used up his entire lane, backed off the throttle twice, and still ran 7.49/185.56. |

Notes: Harry Scribner was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There were 24 cars attempting to make the sixteen-car field and his 7.34 qualified on the "bump.” He upset low qualifier Jim Yates in the opening round and lasted until the semifinals where he was unable to show for his race against Terry Adams. |

Notes: After kicking butt in '87, Rickie wasn't too happy with Billy Meyer's decision to run IHRA Pro Stock along with NHRA rules at 500 cubic inches. The big motored cars were allowed to run in '88, but with a 250-pound penalty. Smith figured his big Ford would still be competitive. He was right! At IHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Darlington, he qualified #2 behind Bob Glidden's 500 cubic inch T-Bird with a 7.37/191.48 (Top Speed). A first-round 7.39/190 beat Steve Schmidt, and in round two, he reset IHRA's Pro Stock et record with a 7.36 (IHRA threw out the '87 records) at 190.67 over Mark Clark. In the semifinals, he took out Warren Johnson with a 7.40. That put him into the final against Glidden. It was a good race, with Smith's 7.39/190.27 (New IHRA speed record) beating Glidden's 7.43/185. It was interesting to note that on every one of the eight passes he made at the event, all were over 190. IHRA's next event was the Supernationals. It was rained out on March 6 and did not run until the 27th, but Rickie did it again. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.37/189.47. Times of 7.43, 7.42, and 7.41 at 189 beat Morris Johnson Jr., Terry Adams, and Glidden (in that order) to reach the final against Johnson. Another 7.37 at 190.27 gave him his second win over WJ's 7.42/186. Another win came at Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships. Rickie's 7.31/191.48 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1, and he again worked his way to the final. After an easy first-round, he ran 7.37/191.08 over Jerry Haas, and a semifinal 7.36/191.48 beat Adams' 7.43/187. He met up with WJ in the final again, and the results were the same: Smith's 7.32/191.48 got him his third win in a row over WJ's 7.43/187. |

Notes: IHRA World Champ 1989. Photo from 1989 IHRA Gateway Nationals Madison, IL. After 12 years of running Fords, Smith switched to Pontiac for '89. He also left his longtime sponsor Motorcraft which had stood behind him since '83. The reason was, he had been playing second fiddle to Bob Glidden. Ford gave all its drag racing advertising to Glidden while Smith got next to none. Rickie had won 19 IHRA victories and Four IHRA world Championships in Fords so it was a tough move to make. |

Notes: Photo from 1996 IHRA Summernationals Morocco, IN, US 41 Dragway. Stevens was at Tulsa for the IHRA Grand American Nationals. In the opening round of eliminations, Larry Nance fouled against him. In round two, his 6.91 lost to eventual winner Robert Patrick's 6.86. He won the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol when his final-round opponent, Jerry Yeoman, fouled. Richie saw the foul and ran 7.28/159.97 for his first IHRA Pro Stock victory. After that win, it was surprising that he failed to qualify at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals. Coming into that race, he was fifth in the IHRA points race. He qualified for the IHRA Summernationals but fouled against Craig Hankinson in round two. Things didn't go so well at the Nebraska Motorplex for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals, either. An opening round 6.99 lost to Angelo Aleschi's 6.92. |
