Notes: UDRA Champ 1976. Photo from the 1977 IHRA Summernationals Union Grove, WI. | Frank writes: I was the driver & engine builder. This is the day we beat Joltin’ Joe Satmary in the final 8.89 to 8.92. This was 1976 and I won the UDRA championship with John's help! The following year, Big Jim Urso of Performance Auto Parts helped choose the parts for a new Mystery Motor BBC 492 which ran 8.60/159 with a lot of traction problems due to the power increase! Like at the Grove, I could leave the line at 1500 RPM & still run 8.63! If you raced with or new me, Frank Goetschel, I now live in Costa Rica Central America. I'm on Facebook. - From Quarter Mile Classics Smugmug site | Also 8.77 at Tri-City 1977. | Our friend Frank passed away on 5/15/20. RIP. |

Notes: Hill showed the world that he had the quickest Pro Stock car in the world when he showed up at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. Roy qualified #1 with a 7.233 (Low ET and new track record) at 191.48. He then ran 7.33/190 over Bob Olson and 7.32/189 to beat a tire-shaking Charlie Peppers. He fouled against Billy Ewing in the semifinal with a 7.31/192.30 (Top Speed). It was unfortunate, as Ewing advanced with a 7.44/186. At the second IHRA race of the year, the Bayou Nationals, he finished runner-up to Bob Glidden in an all-Ford final. At the IHRA Pro-Am, Roy qualified #2 with a 7.35/189.87 behind Bruce Allen's 7.34 in the Reher and Morrison car. In round one, Harold Robinson fouled against him, and a holeshot 7.55/187.11 beat Terry Adams' quicker 7.45/187 in round two, but he fouled against Rickie Smith again in the semis. He won MIR's Spring Mountain Motor Championships, stopping Smith in the final. He also set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.42/187. On June 1, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 7.49/188.20 qualified #3, but he fouled away a 7.57/184.42 against Olson in Gary Stewart's Firebird in the first round. At the IHRA Gateway Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 7.50/186.33. He made his way to the final by beating Jerry Yeoman, a breaking Allen, and by holeshotting Darrell Alderman with a 7.55/186 that beat Darrell's 7.49/191. In the final, he fouled again, only this time against Glidden. He needed to try as Glidden ran 7.39 compared to his 7.59. The next IHRA event was the Northern Nationals held at Milan Dragway on July 6. Hill's 7.45/193.54 qualified #6. His 7.50/189.87 advanced over a fouling Olson in the first round. Unfortunately, in round two, Hill fouled against Alderman. A 7.48/187.11 qualified Roy second at The IHRA Summernationals behind Glidden's 7.37/189. In the first round, he beat Ronny Smith, but his 7.57 lost to a holeshot aided 7.62 by Billy Ewing in round two. Thompson Dragway held their Independence Eve Championships, and Roy was there. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, while beating Alderman with a 7.65/191.48. In the semifinals, he fouled against Joe Lepone. The PHR Championships were held under IHRA rules. Hill qualified #12 with a 7.79/186.33, and in round one, his 7.60/180.36 advanced over a fouling Olson. His Topaz got out of shape in the second round, and his 7.67/187.50 lost to Smith's 7.48/183 Mustang. Hill won the next IHRA race, the World Nationals. He qualified #3 and ran a 7.47 in the first round, over Al Waters. In round two, a 7.45 stopped Jim Ruth's "Party Time" Firebird, and he made an easy pass in the semifinals when Alderman's Camaro broke. In the final, he got the victory with a holeshot over Smith. His 7.47/186.17 beat Smith's 7.43/185. He was in another IHRA final on September 7 at Rockingham for the US Open Championships. He qualified #6 and had made his way to the final by beating Walters, a tire-shaking Allen, and Alderman in the semifinals. In the final, he lost to Smith. The next day (September 8), Hill won the MIR Mountain Motor Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.40 and then ran a 7.34 (track record) at 189 to beat Mike Bazell. A 7.44/188 in round two took out Charlie Garrett's 7.69/179 and a 7.35/188 in the semis beat Bob Harris' Firebird. In the final, he was up against Carlton Phillips, driving Al Waters' Firebird. As stated, Roy won the race with a final round of 7.37/189 over Carlton's 7.51/183. At Piedmont, a 4.76/152.10 one-eighth mile track record was set. Bristol held the Hurst-sponsored Pro Stock shootout the day before (September 20) the IHRA Fallnationals. Roy fouled in the first round, against Ruth. The next day at the IHRA Fallnationals, he beat Alderman in the opening round before losing to eventual winner Glidden's 7.35 in round two with a 7.54. Notes: The Bristol event and a runner-up to Bob Glidden was the event that scared the other IHRA Pro Stock competitors and forced the turbocharged Buick out of IHRA Pro Stock. Buddy ran a 7.16 at Rockingham (compared to Bob Glidden's low qualifying 7.216) that was tossed out because it was said that he "staged with smoke." Listed times from The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. |Ingersoll failed to qualify at Milan, Michigan, in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals. His 7.92/180.00 best was far from making the 7.64 "bump." The first event Buddy qualified at with the V6 was the PHR Championships in early August. His 7.90 held for the "bump" in the sixteen-car field, and his ailing 11-second pass lost to Darrell Alderman in the first round. He failed to qualify at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open after running the 7.16. IHRA officials claimed it was a rear-wheel start and threw out the time. He made believers out of everyone at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. His 7.37/191.48 qualified #2 behind Bob Glidden's 7.26/193. He improved to 7.32/192.30 in the first round over a fouling Ron Smith. In the second round, Ingersoll's 7.38/187 downed Billy Ewing, and in the semifinals, his 7.33/192.30 put Rickie Smith's 7.46/188 on the trailer. He faced Glidden in the final, and Bob's 7.28/193 gave the Mountain Motor fans a victory over Buddy's 7.37/189.07. IHRA then outlawed the car from competition for the following year. |

Notes: The unusual thing about this car was that while all the other Pro Stock Fords were running the Boss 429 Hemi style heads Thomas bucked the trend and ran wedge style cylinder heads. He was quite competitive for a low buck operation. At the IHRA Winternationals he qualified #10 with a 7.44/188, but he lost in the first round. Just qualifying for these races was tough so to do it with an oddball combination was impressive. He also made the field at the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 5 with a 7.51/185.95 that qualified #14. Thomas lost to Roy Hill in the first round. Jackson former Rickie Smith Ford. |

Notes: John qualified #10 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.87/204.57 (Top Speed of the meet). In the first round of eliminations, his 6.85/203.65 beat Tim Nabors' 6.90/200. In the second round, John had problems and shut down to a 9.57/90.73 loss to eventual winner Angelo Alesci. He followed the IHRA tour to Maryland for the President's Cup Championships, where he qualified #4 with a 6.81/203.66. In round one, his 6.85/203.65 beat Ed Machacek's 6.95/200, but once again, in round two, he shut off with problems, and his slowing 12.44 lost to Nabors' 6.95. The next IHRA event was the Summernationals held at Cordova Dragway in July. Konigshofer qualified #7 with a 6.85/204.45, but he had a close first-round race with Richie Stevens that saw his 6.89/203.52 lose to Richie's 6.87/201. In September, he was back at Bristol for the IHRA Autumn Nationals, where his 6.89/202.58 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round, his 6.91/202.21 lost to low qualifier Tony Gillig's 6.83/202. |

Notes: Machacek had raced in Pro Stock since the early '80s. He had really been competitive in the late '90s. Then things picked up for him. He started the '97 season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He showed that the car was more than capable of running with the leaders by qualifying #3. A 6.72 easily advanced past the first round, and in round two, he beat Ron Miller. He took out Tim Nabors in the semi-final with a 6.78/203.94. This was Ed's second IHRA final-round appearance. He faced Richie Stevens in the final, and Ed had the advantage based on performance. Stevens' semi-final win came at 6.81, so Machacek also had lane choice for the final. But Ed ran his slowest pass of the day while Stevens ran his quickest, and the Ford driver's 6.79 got the win over Ed's 6.82. Ed qualified #14 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.88/202.73. Another 6.88 at 200.92 in the first round lost to Tony Gillig's identical 6.88/202. Shortly after, he was at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. He qualified #13 at 6.84/203.66. But he slowed to 6.95/200.02 in the opening round and lost to John Konigshofer's 6.85/203. He was at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals in the first week of July. His 6.89/200.71 qualified #14. In the first round, he and his opponent, Pete Berner, had run 6.90 (Ed at 201.16), but the win light came on in Berner's lane. He also qualified #14 at the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.85/202.65. The first round continued to give him a hard time, and his 6.86/201.70 lost to John Montecalvo's 6.87/202. Despite these first-round losses, he was still in ninth in IHRA points. Bristol was the next stop on the IHRA schedule for the Autumn Nationals. Ed qualified #13 at 6.88/201.97. That was still pretty good, as people thought the NHRA fields were tough; IHRA was pretty stout, too. His time was better than Nabors, Doug Kirk, and Steve Williford, among others. In round one, he upset Angelo Alesci's 6.87/202 with a quick-leaving 6.89/201.82. In round two, he continued to impress as both he and Montecalvo had run 6.93 (Ed at 201.04), but Machacek got the win. His ride ended in the semi-final, where low qualifier and eventual winner Tony Gillig's 6.85/202 beat his 6.92/201.01. He moved up to eighth in the points. Norwalk had been postponed due to rain, and the IHRA World Nationals were not run until mid-September. It took a 6.77 to make the show, and Ed just got in with his 6.77/204.26, qualifying #15. Once again, he had a close race where both drivers ran the same time. In the first round, he and David Jenkins both ran 6.79 (Machacek at 203.75), but he lost this one. |
