Notes: 8.66 too quick for legal 1977 run. Run was disqualified, and we are listing it as a match race time. | The run was at the 1977 IHRA Northern Nationals, and yes, it "looked too quick." A protest was lodged, and as part of the teardown by IHRA, it was found that the "396" was actually a 512 CI Hemi. Also ran 8.77 at Cincinnati this year. We are listing that at match race trim until we get other information. |

Notes: Terry started the IHRA season by qualifying #15 at Darlington for the Winternationals with a 7.51/185. He got out of shape and shut off in the first round, giving Rickie Smith the win. At Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships, a 7.50/181.81 qualified #7. He beat Jim Ruth in the first round, but his late 7.45/187.50 lost to Roy Hill's 7.54/187.11 in round two. The "Bad Bird" was a regular qualifier on the IHRA tour, regularly running in the 7.50s. He also lasted until round two at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. There he lost to Smith. At Edgewater for the Summernationals, he qualified #5 with a 7.53/182. He beat Terry Walters in the first round before losing to Darrell Alderman's 7.45/187 with a 7.58/183.29 in the second round. At the PHR Championships (IHRA sanctioned) at US 131, Adams qualified #7 and beat Mike Bazell in the first round. In round two, his 7.60 lost to Billy Ewing's 7.50. On August 24, he was at Norwalk for the World Nationals. He qualified #9 but fouled in the first round against Tim Nabors. In September, he made it into the semifinals at the US Open at Rockingham. He beat Ed Dixon with a 7.46/186.72 and Dean Goforth's Camaro in round two before losing to Rickie Smith in the semis. At Bristol for the Fallnationals, Adams ran 7.40/187 to qualify #4. A first-round 7.46 beat Al Waters and in round two, a holeshot 7.53/176 beat Jim Ruth's quicker 7.47/186. Once again, he was in the semifinals, but his opponent was Bob Glidden, and Glidden's 7.30/190 buried Terry's 7.49/185. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. |

Notes: Cheek qualified #8 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.84/203.65.GM and Ford were at war in the "Mountain Motored" war at this race; GM had the numbers. Only four Fords qualified, and Floyd's was the second quickest of the bunch. Three of the Ford drivers lost in round one, and Cheek was one of them. His 6.82/203.65 fell to David Jenkins' 6.87/202. At Maryland International, things evened up a bit when seven Fords qualified for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. Floyd was #7 overall with a 6.81/205.52, the fourth quickest Ford driver. In the opening round, his 6.84/202.73 beat Richie Stevens' 6.85/201. In round two, he beat Jon Yoak with a 6.85/202.73, and a semi-final 6.85 defeated Jenkins' 6.89. It was Ford vs. Chevy in the final as he faced Tim Nabors, and Cheek's 6.83/204.57 got the victory for the blue oval boys over Nabor's 6.93/200. The next race on the IHRA schedule was the IHRA Summernationals at Cordova Dragway in the first week of July. Cheek's 6.84/204.68 (Top Speed) was the quickest Ford and fourth overall. John Nobile shut down against him in round one, and his 6.86/203.57 advanced. In round two, his 6.89/202.65 beat Yoak's 6.96/200. The semi-finals featured two GMs against two Fords. Floyd was hoping to make it two wins in a row, but his late 6.88/203.02 lost to eventual winner Nabors' 6.91/201. He didn't have to wait long before scoring his next win, which came at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex in August. He had "only" qualified #11 for the IHRA Northern Nationals, but he ran quick enough to win. His 6.86/204 beat Nabors' 6.90/200 in round one. Then John Montecalvo fouled against him in round two. That also happened in the final, as Richie Stevens fouled away a 6.76/204 while Cheek coasted to 13.18/61 for the victory in the all-Ford final. Shortly after that, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.72/206.61, and he backed up the speed for a new IHRA record. He was heading towards another final round appearance, but he fouled against Tom Lee in the semi-final. |

Notes: Harold started his season by running a strong 6.98/200.44 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. That field was so strong that that pass only qualified #5. Unfortunately, he was late in the first round, and his 7.02/198.71 lost to Jim Revis' 7.09/197. At the second IHRA race of the season, the Bama Nationals, Denton, failed to qualify! It was a 1/8 mile track, and his best of 4.57/156.33 was only good for the second alternate. He had trouble in qualifying at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals when his best of 7.18/193.09 was once again outside of the show (first alternate). He rebounded by qualifying #4 with a 7.12/193.92 at the IHRA Empire Nationals. But in the first round, he pushed the tree too hard and fouled against Billy Huff. He competed at the Mountain Motor Nationals at Maryland International on July 14. A 7.04/196.29 (Top Speed) qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field. He took a little nap in the first round, and his 7.03/196.29 lost to Terry Leggett's 7.13/194. A few days later (July 18), he was at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. It was almost a perfect race for Denton. He qualified #1 with a 6.93 (Low ET) at 197.80. A first-round 7.01/195.99 beat Billy Ewing's 7.10/195, in round two, a 7.00/196.50 beat a tire-shaking Huff. He got back into the sixes in the semifinals with a 6.99/196.54, beating Floyd Cheek's Probe at 7.08/195. In the final, he ran a 6.97/205.99 (Top Speed) but lost (almost a perfect race) to Doug Kirk's holeshot 6.99/198. Still, a runner-up finish was good, considering that up until this race, he didn't win a single round in IHRA competition. The following week (July 25), he was back in another IHRA final. The race was the IHRA Northeast Nationals at Epping, New Hampshire. Denton's "Party Time" Firebird qualified #3 with a 6.98/199.51. He picked up a little more in the first round, with a 6.96/200.44 beating Steve Williford's 7.33/192. A 7.00/199.95 beat Tim Nabors in round two, while a semifinal 6.99/200.35 beat Kirk's 7.09/200. In the final, he ran a 6.99/200.40 that lost to Roy Hill's 6.95/200 Thunderbird. The next IHRA race was the Mid-America Nationals at the Nebraska Motorplex in August. Harold qualified #4 with a 7.11/195.14. He beat Darryl Warren in the first round, with a 7.16/193.46. In round two, his 7.14/193.29 beat Charlie Garrett's 7.17/191. In the semifinals, he lost to a holeshot by Huff. Billy's 7.22/194 beat Denton's quicker 7.18/193.05. By mid-season, the Fords were becoming tougher and tougher to beat. The GM teams had more teams, but the Fords were making a lot of torque. At Norwalk, for the IHRA World Nationals, there were only four Fords that qualified. All were in the top half of the field. Denton, and a few others, were able to run with them, but it was swaying towards the blue oval at this time. Denton's 7.07/195.65 qualified #5 at Norwalk. He was late off the line in the opening round, and his 7.14/194.42 fell to Morris Johnson Jr's 7.23/189. The final saw Robert Patrick's T-Bird beat Cheek's Probe. The next race was the IHRA North American Nationals. Harold qualified #4 with a 6.95/199.15. Another 6.95/200.44 defeated Williford's 7.10/196 in round one. He improved to 6.94/200.26 in round two but lost to eventual winner Patrick, who cut a good light and won with a 6.99/199. 1992 photo. |

Notes: Ed Dixon was a strong runner in the IHRA competition in '87. In March, at the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 at 7.40/189 and made it into the second round before his 7.44/187 lost to the race's eventual winner Rickie Smith, who beat him with a 7.26/190. He went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where his 7.48/186.33 qualified #5. An opening round 7.52/185.95 beat alternate Jim Ehlen, but he lost to Bob Olson in round two. At the IHRA Springnationals, a 7.55 qualified him #13, but he suffered a first-round loss. Bob Glidden got Ed in the second round at the IHRA Summernationals. At the IHRA Northern Nationals, he qualified #12 with a 7.47/189.47 but lost in the first round, despite his hard-charging 190.67 mph blast. Notes: Ewing qualified at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a career-best (to this point) 7.37/187. He then ran 7.41/186 to beat Terry Walters and 7.43/186 over a fouling Pat Musi. A 7.44/186 advanced to the final in the semifinals when Roy Hill fouled away a 7.31/192. It was an all Camaro final where he met Darrell Alderman. Unfortunately for Billy, Alderman got the win in Jerry Haas' car. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, a 7.44/189.47 qualified #5. He beat Tom Sutton in the first round, with a 7.45/190.67. In the second round, his 7.49/181.81 lost to Tim Nabors' 7.46/189. At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, Billy was a little off his usual pace as he "only" qualified #11 with a 7.62/182.18. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.69/178.21 fell to Bob Glidden's 7.44/187.11. His next stop was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Ewing qualified #7, and he defeated Tim Nabors in the opening round. He lost to Alderman in round two. Milan, Michigan, was the next race on the IHRA tour for its Northern Nationals run on July 6. Ewing qualified #8 with a 7.52/186.72. Another 7.52 at 189.47 in the first round, stopped Terry Adams' 7.60/183. But he lost to eventual winner Glidden in round two. He ran well at Edgewater Park for the IHRA Summernationals. A 7.55/184 qualified #7. He beat Nabors in round one. Then he took out Hill's 7.57 with a quick-leaving 7.62 before fouling against Rickie Smith in the semifinal. He ran even better at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 7.48/184.42 qualified #2 behind Alderman's 7.45/183. An opening round 7.49/180.00 beat a tire shaking Neil Moyer. In round two, his 7.50/180.36 defeated Adams' 7.60/183. Alderman fouled against him in the semifinal, and Ewing advanced with a 7.56/180.00. He faced Smith in the final, and his 7.64/180.00 finished runner-up to Rickie's 7.58/184. Norwalk was the next stop for the IHRA World Nationals held on August 24. Billy qualified #5 but was upset in the first round, by Ed Dixon. No times were recorded in their race. Old car, former Johnny Dowey, Number 5 in IHRA. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Glidden almost became the first driver in a doorslammer to reach 200 miles per hour when he ran 199.11 at Darlington in March 87. Bill Kuhlmann ran 202 at the same race in Top Sportsman to become the first doorslammer over 200. Ran 7.287 Rockingham Fall. | Bob really had his IHRA engine combination flying in '87. Never sure how big his engine was, it was said to have been between 630 and 678 cubic inch The IHRA season started at Darlington and Bob unloaded with his "small" 500 cubic inch NHRA engine. He ran it in the first qualifying session on Thursday and went 7.49/185. He was still using it on Friday when he came back out and ran 7.48/186. Saturday morning saw the team installing the IHRA motor into the T-Bird. He then ran 7.27/197.80. He came back out later in the afternoon and ran 7.26/194. Finally, on a early evening pass, he carried the front wheels about 600 feet down the track and ran 7.19/199.11. The pass stunned the fans and gave Bob the pole for the race. Unfortunately, in the first round, Glidden encountered severe tire shake that knocked the pin out of fourth gear. He still made a race on it as he had gotten a good leave and was ahead of his opponent, Jim Ruth when he pulled third gear. Bob held it in third as lost as he could before Ruth's 7.72/180 came roaring past for the win. He ran 8.02/163 with no fourth gear. IHRA's next event was the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. Bob made one unofficial (never crossed the scales) run of 194.38 during qualifying. He lost to Tim Nabors in the first round, due to tire shake again. |
