Notes: Mark attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 7.575/181.37 was the first alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he again failed to qualify with a best of 7.739/177.06.Mark had one of the 34 cars attempting to qualify at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals but he was the sixth alternate at 7.732/179.28. He also was the sixth alternate at Bandimere at 8.130/169.17. Mark ran 7.765/177.86 at Brainerd but that was well out of the show. His 7.651/182.51 was in the middle of the DNQ list at Indy. Mark's best NHRA times were 7.520/184.16 at Ennis Fall but again, he was in the middle of a huge pack of non qualifiers. A 7.679/181.89 at Phoenix was also a DNQ at Mark's final event of the year. |

Notes: At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Sanchez ran a best of 7.47/185.64, but he failed to crack (tenth alternate) the 7.43 bump. Frank attempted to qualify at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals on August 6, but his best of 7.48/183.97 was good for the fifth alternate. He didn't attempt to run at the Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the US Nationals where he ran a best of 7.468/184.88 for the fourteenth alternate. He then ran at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, but he fouled out against Jerry Yeoman in the second round. He was back in the NHRA fold for the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove in September, but once again he failed to make the show. A best of 7.42/186.06 was #7 alternate. |

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. Photo from 1986 US Nationals. Steve did not run as well as he would have liked at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals where his 7.72/177.20 best failed to qualify. Schmidt attempted to qualify at the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but he was the fifth alternate with a best of 7.61/180.65. Steve qualified #15 at the NHRA Chief Nationals with a 7.64/180.46. Another 7.64 at 179.53 in the first round, lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.61/180. At the NHRA Fallnationals, he was the first alternate with a 7.69/178.28 best. He also failed to qualify at the NHRA World Finals where his 7.66/178.14 was the fourth alternate. |

Notes: Steve qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.56/184.19. A 7.59/178.04 in round one, lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.48/183. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #9 with a 7.51/184.50. The problem with that was that he would have to run Bob Glidden in the first round. Anyone qualifying in the #9 spot in '87 would have to race Glidden as he qualified #1 at every NHRA National event. Steve attempted to compensate, and he fouled away a 7.63 while Glidden moved on with a 7.40. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Schmidt qualified for the show with a 7.57/184.91 which was good enough for the #13 spot in the field. He ran 7.47/185.79 in round one, but it wasn't enough to beat Warren Johnson's 7.44/185. He continued to do well in qualifying at the NHRA Cajun Nationals where there were 34 cars attempting to qualify. Steve's 7.61/182/92 qualified #11. Another 7.61 at 173.14 in the first round, lost to the race's eventual winner Butch Leal at 7.51/183. At the NHRA Springnationals, he failed to qualify for the show, only running a best of 7.75/182.85 (sixteenth alternate). Steve did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but he was back on the tour for the Summernationals at Englishtown. Once again he had problems and his best of 7.63/181.34 was good for the tenth alternate. He did not qualify for a NHRA race until the NHRA Northstar Nationals where his 7.63/180.07 gave him the #11 spot in the field. He got his first NHRA round win of the year when Joe Lepone fouled against him in the first round, and Steve advanced with a 7.66/181.05. In the second round, he was he who fouled against Johnson. He had to gamble as Warren won with a 7.58 compared to his red-light 7.65. Then came Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Unfortunately, Steve's best of 7.59/183.56 (eighth alternate) failed to make the show. |

Notes: Steve qualified #1 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 7.34 (Low ET) at 188.28. He was using a 500 cubic inch motor. He beat Rickie Smith in the first round, with a 7.44/187.50. A round two 7.43/187.50 beat Billy Ewing and in the semifinals, a 7.55/185.95 beat Joe Clark. In the final, he met Tim Nabors' mountain motored Camaro. Schmidt's 7.50/185.18 was good for the runner-up spot to Nabors’ 7.38/188. He was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where his 7.43/184.16 qualified #13. But in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.47/184.35 lost to Don Beverley's 7.41/185. Steve failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 7.47/184.61 best was good for the twelfth alternate. |

Notes: Although three Chevy Beretta's qualified at Brainerd in August for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Pete's didn't, and his 7.48/183.59 was the second alternate. He qualified #13 at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with a 7.417/186.45, but he lost to eventual winner Jerry Eckman in the opening round. The Indy times were his best of the year. Notes: Smith attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 7.25/190.31 was good for the first alternate. At the Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, he again failed to qualify, running a 7.35/187.89 best as the seventh alternate. He improved to career bests of 7.13/193.13 to qualify #8 at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. A first-round 7.18/191.28 beat Joe Lepone Jr's 7.26/190. In round two, Tricky Rickie pulled one of his patented holeshots on Warren Johnson and ran a 7.17/191.00 to win over WJ's 7.11/194. In the semifinals, it was he who got left on as Larry Morgan's 7.19/191 beat his 7.18/190.96. NHRA's next stop was at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. Rickie qualified #15 with a 7.16/192.76. In the first round, he surprised Scott Geoffrion with a holeshot 7.22/191.00 that beat Scott's 7.18/192. In round two, a 7.25/190.35 beat David Rampy's 7.28/187. For the second race in a row, he was in the semifinals, and once again, he faced Morgan. Rickie tried to get away with a holeshot, but he "bulbed," and his 7.25/190.71 was for naught as Larry went into the final with a 7.19/192. At the non-points NHRA Winston Invitational, Smith qualified #14 with a 7.20/191.97. He showed his driving talent by beating Mark Pawuk's 7.14/193 in the first round, with a 7.18/192.47. In round two, both he and Jim Yates ran 7.20's, but Yates got the win. These early season races were run using a Bickel-built car. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he debuted a new Haas-built Firebird. The new car qualified #12 with a 7.22/190.67. He beat Lepone Jr's 7.32/190 in the first round, with a 7.27/189.31. In the second round, his 7.31/189.95 fell to Frank Iaconio's 7.26/190. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Smith didn't have a good outing as his best of 7.29 was good for the fifth alternate spot. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #9 at Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals with a 7.16/191.57. He treed Morgan in the first round, with his 7.27/189.35 beating Larry's quicker 7.20/192. Unfortunately, he lost to WJ in round two. Photo from 1993 US Nationals. |
