Notes: Jim was in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Adolph's 7.32 qualified #13, and he beat Ed McCulloch in the first round before losing in a tire-smoking battle with Billy Meyer that saw Meyer's 6.56 beat his 6.82. He also competed at Irwindale's last drag race. It was a 32 car field, and in the opening round, his 7.29 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.33. He ran 6.205/231.36 at Ontario for his best NHRA national event times. He made it to the semis there before losing to Don Prudhomme.

Notes: Jim was at Englishtown on July 5 for its Funny Car Spectacular. The race featured ten FC's each running two races, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. In his opening race, Jim ran 6.19/214.28 to beat Tommy Ivo's 6.62/197. He had problems on his second run, and he shut down to 8.77/88.75, losing to Les Cassidy's 6.63. Denny Savage had set Low ET at 6.11, but his car broke and could not run in the final. Tom McEwen had second Low ET with a 6.17, but he also sat with a broken car. Ed McCulloch was next at 6.18, but wouldn't you know it: his car could not run the final. So that moved Adolph into the final to face Gary Burgin, who had made it with a 6.18. Jim tried hard in the final, but the car got loose, and he shut off while Burgin motored to 6.20 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Division Four final. Jim set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.42/205.01. Only six cars showed, and in the first round, his 6.67/198 beat Ezra Boggs' 7.03/208 in the "Moby Dick" Corvette. He then got an easy solo in the semifinals due to the short field. In the final, his car broke, and Tom Anderson soloed for the victory at 19.49. DNQ at Indy for the US Nationals at 6.313/220.04. Jim also failed to qualify at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals.

Notes: Allen was at Irwindale on April 8 for a best-of-three-match race against Steve Bovan. He won the match two straight with times of 9.10/136.57 and 8.99/155.17, but the win didn't come without problems as his right door flew off the car at the top end of the track in his first race. He was supposed to show at Stardust Raceway for a match against Gas Ronda's Mustang on May 14, but he was a no-show. On June 24, he beat Clyde Morgan's "Vicious Vette" two straight at Irwindale. Their first race saw Allen's 8.98/159.29 nip Morgan's quicker 8.97/157. The 'Vette got out of shape in the second race, and Charlie ran another 8.98 at 162.45 to win. Confirmed 8.23/184.80 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67 and 8.45 at Irwindale.

Notes: Charlie's Charger was in the northwest for most of its existence 'cuz Charlie was in the Army at Fort Lewis. It ran constantly and won nearly every race all of 1971 except the NHRA WCS events - Jerry Ruth won all five. Hard to forget that number. - Phil Elliott | Charlie Allen claimed both ends of the Funny Car record at 6.82/222.22. - NHRA | Ran 6.82 at Fremont 6/71 (National Record) |At the rain-delayed Fremont Northern Nationals, Allen qualified with a 7.71/142.85. But he was unable to make it back for the race's rain date. On May 1st, he was at Seattle for an eight-car show, but he broke a rear end in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Deer Park for the NHRA Division 6 race. Eventual winner Jerry Ruth's 7.11/204 beat his 7.17/196.92. He made it into the final at the next NHRA Division 6 race held at Bremerton on May 23. Allen qualified #1 with a 7.03. Only six cars showed, and in the first round, he soloed. In the semifinals, his 7.57/207.84 beat Glen Foster. He went up against Ruth in the final, and his car broke at half-track while Ruth bagged another one with a 6.78. Did he also run that time at Amarillo on 9/13/70?

Notes: Alley literally tore the roof off his three-week-old Charger at Irwindale on August 25. According to the 9/01/67 National Dragster, this occurred when his throttle stuck during a qualifying pass, resulting in a wide-open run that ended a full 1/8th mile past the finish line. He turned Low ET of 8.19 of the event in the process and returned to participate in eliminations, topless. - RT | Ran 8.62 and 8.77 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Ran 8.19 at Irwindale. - DC | This car took a long time to build. Alley had wanted to have the first Charger Funny Car, but problems held the car back and it actually took 18 months to get finished. The frame was designed by Ray and Bob Brown, but the final welding was done by Don Long. The wheelbase was 118" and it used an Olds rear axle with 3.90 gears. Of course, Alley’s company, Engine Masters, built the TorqueFlite transmission. The engine was an early 354 Hemi built by Dave Cole. Ed Pink line-bored the block. The crank was a standard Chrysler unit. M/T rods and Venolia 7:1 pistons were used. Chet Herbert supplied the cam. The heads were ported and polished by Lockerman with stock 2" Chrysler intake valves. The exhausts were 2 1/8" Donovans. Tom Jobe of the Surfers built the blower running at 28% overdrive. Hilborn injection sat up top. The car was run on 70% nitro and Ray was willing to tip the can if needed. The car weighed 2,200 lbs. and within weeks of being done he ran early times of 8.46/179.98. Ray was at Fontana on Jan 7 for an eight-car show. It was a hard show to get into as 42 cars attempted to qualify for the eight positions. Ray beat the "Whinemaker" in the first round, with an 8.11/180.72. In the semifinal, he ran an easy 9.08/146.57 when Marv Eldridge fouled. In the final, he was up against "Dyno" Don Nicholson. Ray ran an 8.52/178.21 for the runner-up money as Don's 8.08/172 took the win.

Notes: Ray was at the AHRA Winternationals Funny Car meet at Lions on January 28. It was a 32 car affair, and he qualified #10 with an 8.41/171.10. He advanced past the first round when the "Green Hornet" lost fire on the line. In the second round, a wheelstand slowed Ray to a 9.67, and he lost to Ed Schartman's 8.11. Ray then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. NHRA still did not have a Funny Car class, so he had to run in Super Eliminator. But his first-round 8.34/138.46 lost to Richard Galli's A/FD. He was at Lions again on February 24 when over 50 cars showed for the 16-car field at the Funny Car Spectacular. Unfortunately, a best of 8.48 failed to crack the 8.41 bump. Ray did better the next day (February 25) at Carlsbad for the South Coast Funny Car Championships. He beat Randy Walls in the first round, with an 8.32/172.74, but a second-round 8.35/180.36 lost to Jim Liberman's 7.84/183. On March 3, Irwindale held a 16-car show with 30 cars trying to qualify. Ray qualified #9 with an 8.32/174.41, putting him against the #1 qualifier in his first-round race. Alley improved to an 8.25 but still lost to Charlie Allen's 8.16. Ray ran at OCIR for a sixteen-car show on April 13, but he lost to Norm Cowdrey in the first round. On May 4, OCIR held its 1968 Funny Car team Championships. Ray again lost in the first round; this time, Gas Ronda's 8.09/178 beat him. He lost early at the Funny Car 500 at OCIR on June 1. Although he lost early at Irwindale on June 22, Ray set Low ET in qualifying at 7.96. A first-round 8.30/187.50 (Top Speed) lost to Randy Walls' holeshot 8.35/171. Ray ran 7.860/185.94 at Bristol 9/20/68 while winning the All American Funny Car Championships.

Notes: Stock stroke motor. | Best NHRA ET was 7.263/196.07. Also 194.38 at Seattle 8/22/70. | Ray was at Lions for an eight-car show on June 27. His 7.49/194.38 beat Andy Clary in the first round, but his 7.67 in the semifinal lost to Dave Beebe's 7.49. On July 3, he competed at the OCIR Nitro Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.53/191.08 beat John Lombardo's 7.86/185. Marv Eldridge fouled against him in round two, so Alley advanced with a 7.51/189.07. His next opponent, Mert Littlefield, shut down early and Ray's 7.66/177.86 went to the final. He faced Arnie Behling, who was behind the wheel of John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. The final wasn't very close as Behling set Low ET with a 7.25 at 200 to easily cover Alley's 7.95/191.89. The following day, he was at Irwindale for the Fourth of July Championships. This was only an eight-car show, but Alley qualified. An opening round 8.53/135.13 advanced when Don Hampton crossed the centerline, but the Duster broke in its semifinal match against eventual winner Behling. Ray got another runner-up finish at Lions on July 11 for the AHRA All-American race. In the first round, his quick-leaving 7.83/179.28 beat Steve Bovan's 7.76/188. He actually lost to Behling's 8.02/133 in the semifinals when he ran an off-pace 8.81/187.50, but Arnie's Cuda had blown a rear end, so Alley was reinstated for the final. There he ran against Roger Wolford, who was driving the "Mako Shark" Corvette. The two had a good race, but Roger's 7.61/176 got to the stripe first before Alley's 7.65/193.54. Yet another runner-up finish came at OCIR on July 25 for the PDA Championships. In the first round, Ed Lenarth lost fire, giving Alley a 7.71/185.56 solo. In the second round, Danny Ongais lost fire in the M/T Mustang. Ray ran 7.51/185.56 to advance. Once again, he needed a little "help" with the "break rule" as he lost his semifinal race to Gene Conway. Alley's 7.79/186.33 lost to Conway's 7.47/192.71. But in the other semifinal race, both Lombardo and Dave Condit were able to get their cars down the track due to breakage, so both were disqualified. Alley now had to rerun Conway in the final. This time Ray had troubles and shut off to 11.52/99.77 while Conway got the victory with a 7.65/181. He ventured to Kent, Washington, for the Seafair Nationals on July 31. He ran times of 7.85, 7.50, and 7.48/193.12 to reach the final. It was an all-Duster final as he faced Ed McCulloch. The two had a great race that saw Ed's 7.05/210 win over Ray's quicker 6.99/199.48. McCulloch also stopped him at the third NHRA Division Seven race held at Bakersfield on August 9. This time it came in the semifinals. A week later (August 15), he was at OCIR for its anniversary race. It was a sixteen-car field, and Alley's opening round 7.53/192.71 beat Condit's 7.70/196 in the "L. A. Hooker." But in round two, he fouled away a 7.49/192.71 against Eldridge.

Notes: Also had a plain enamel red paint job this year. |Ray Alley was racing for 25 years when the '71 season started. He was a very helpful person. In '70 his good friend Marv Eldridge was critically injured. Alley stepped up and ran Eldridge's Fiberglass Trends shop. He didn't have to be asked as he stepped in to help. Ask any racer of the time and I’m sure they would have a good story to recount about Ray. His '71 ride was a switch for him. He had always run Mopar bodied Funny Car's, but his new car was a Mustang sitting on a 118" wheelbase John Buttera chassis. It used a Halibrand rear with 5.41 gears and a Lenco two-speed transmission. A stock-stroke 426 Hemi used Howards rods and Arias pistons was used. The cam was also by Howards. A John Hovan built blower sat on a Cragar manifold. Up on top sat Enderle injection. The article in the November. '71 SS/FC magazine claimed that Ray had set track records at Irwindale and Seattle. It also went on to say that he had topped 212 with the car. Ray set Low ET at OCIR's March of Dimes event in June with a 6.88. He made it into the final of the eight-car show by winning his first-round race with a 6.91/205.71 to beat Bob Pickett's quicker 6.89/215. He ran his Low ET in the semifinals with his 6.88 at 208.81 beating Sush Matsubara's 7.08/214. In the final, he fell off to a 7.18/205.47 that finished runner-up to Dave Beebe's 6.90/216 in the "Mr. Ed" car.

Notes: On January 23, Ray was runner-up at the second OCIR All-Pro race. He beat Gary Burgin's 6.94/210 in the first round, with a 6.85/205.94. In the semifinals, a 6.85/209.79 beat Jake Johnston in Gene Snow's second car. An off-pace 7.28 in the final lost to Snow's track record 6.57. On May 6, he was at OCIR's Big Four Championships. Bob Pickett fouled against him in the first round, but in round two, his engine exploded while running a winning 7.22/184.80. He won his race, but received minor burns and was unable to return for round three (32 car show). He was at Lions a couple of weeks later for the second annual Funny Car Festival. An opening round 7.15/192.71 beat Mert Littlefield, but he lost soon after. Alley was back at OCIR for the Hang Ten meet where his 7.05/189.47 in the first round, lost to Joe Lee's 6.95/209.

Amberson qualified #13 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 6.037/242.58. In the opening round, his 5.975/244.56 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.868/254.95. This was the team's only NHRA race in 1986. The following week (August 24), he was at Cordova for the 33rd annual World Series. The race was run "Chicago Style," with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In the first round, he broke against Johnny West, who was driving the "Hawaiian." In the second round, Darrell's 6.26/235.41 lost to Wayne Minick's 6.13/244 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Amberson's ET failed to get him into the final. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1986. The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9, had 5.945/251.39 at Tulsa (first time with dual mags, dual pumps, 14/71 blower) in 1986. Where was the 5.825/255.68 run? Munro thinks it was IHRA Milan. We need to confirm.

Notes: Darrell drove this car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.709/254.45 qualified #15. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one, 5.729/250.48 to 10.16, before losing to eventual winner Dale Pulde in round two, 5.45/268 to 5.723/255.17. Darrell qualified #14 at Gainesville in the Trans Am at 5.737/254.30. In round one, he lost to Don Prudhomme, 5.55/267 to 5.789/259.59. He qualified #12 for the IHRA Texas Nationals in April with a 5.63/264.86. He improved to 5.472 in the first round before falling off to 5.53/257.28 in round two and losing to Tripp Shumake's 5.43/258. Darrell qualified #13 at Atlanta with a 5.937/254.59. In round one, he lost to Jim Head, 5.65/253 to 5.889/246.44. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 5.80/255.97 qualified #6 in the eight car field. In the opening round, the car broke and slowed to 6.96/139.10 in a loss to Head's 5.98/245. In Memphis, Darrell qualified on the bump at 5.837/260.34. In round one, he lost to Tim Grose, 5.62/258 to 6.236/186.14. He qualified #13 at Baton Rouge (only 13 cars showed) at 6.074/238.15. Don Prudhomme got to him again in round one, 5.49/267 to 5.920/248.55. Despite losing early at the Cajun Nationals, he sat in ninth spot at this time in NHRA FC points. He wasn't far behind Tom Hoover (1,856 to 1,725 in point) who sat eighth in points. In the second week of July, he was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.80 qualified #6, and in the first round, his engine-blowing 7.88/107 lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch's 5.75. Darrell was also on the bump spot at Brainerd, qualifying at 6.089/221.62. In round one, he improved to 5.979/233.16 but lost to Scott Kalitta's 5.59/262. In mid-September, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. His 5.96/222.77 qualified #7 for the eight car show and he lost early in eliminations. Darrell was the second alternate at the Houston Supernationals at 5.804/241.87. He skipped several events and raced at the World Finals. He was the fifth alternate at 5.805/221.83 but we think that was in his Ambition Corvette because Whit Bazemore had the former Ted Combis car and also DNQ'd at 6.005/221.67. We need confirmation of that. Photo from the 1988 IHRA Winternationals, Darlington, South Carolina.

Notes: Darrell started the year with a runner-up finish at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.89/244.56 and improved to a 5.82/231.85 in the first round, over Frank Kramberger. In the semifinals, a 5.85/248.61 beat Doc Halladay's 5.88. In the final, he met low qualifier, Brad Tuttle. It was a close race, with Brad's 5.79/251 winning over Darrell's 5.80/248.61. At the next IHRA event, the Springnationals at Bristol, he failed to qualify. The car was destroyed on July 15 while attempting to qualify for the KCIR Summernationals. Darrell had just finished pulling the 'chute after a 6.35 run when Doug Pickard's car, which had gone into a fireball, rear-ended him. Both cars were destroyed, and Amberson was OK, but Pickard received third-degree burns on his face and hands.

Notes: Anderson qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.26/260.11. He had problems in the first round against Chuck Etchells and shut off. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.36/294.21 qualified #11. He pulled off a big upset in the first round when both he and John Force smoked their tires. Randy recovered first, and his 5.96/190.83 beat Force's 6.23/222. In round two, he pulled off another upset where his 5.04/308.11 defeated Cruz Pedregon's 5.23/285. I'm sure that put a smile back on Force's face!. In the semi-final, Anderson lost to eventual winner Etchells. Gainesville was his next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. Randy qualified #5 at 4.96/272.64. Jim Dunn replaced Larry Frazier as tuner.

Notes: By '78, few teams were using Vega bodies in AA/FC racing, and those that were, were more times than not, underfunded teams. This was one Vega that was feared by other teams. Anderson had the only Vega to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.41/221.67 put him in the dreaded #9 spot forcing him to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme, in the opening round. The "Snake" won their race with a 6.52/221 over Tom's 6.81/202.70. He made it into the final at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and, in the semifinals, Tom Hoover smoked the tires against him and shut off. He faced Bob Pickett in the final, and this time Anderson smoked the tires while Pickett ran 6.61/219 for the victory. He was also runner-up to Mike Miller at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis. Tom also had the only Vega that made the field for the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. His 6.36/228.45 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. But in the first round, the car got out of shape against John Lombardo, and he shut off to a 7.72/113.06 loss. Anderson got another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. A final round 6.25/222.77 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16/237. He was at Edgewater for the next Division 3 race, where he qualified #2 with a 6.43/218.97. A first-round 6.46 beat Murf McKinney's 6.91, but he got out of shape in the semifinals and lost to Larry Fullerton. Of course, he had the only Vega in the show at Englishtown for the Summernationals, but this Vega was laying down some numbers. His 6.17/230.76 qualified #9 and put him up against Prudhomme for the first round again. Prudhomme's 6.13 won their race, but Anderson's 6.25 in losing was nothing to be ashamed of. Tom did not race at any IHRA races until the Northern Nationals at Milan in July. At Milan, his 6.35 qualified #3. An opening round 6.25/227.27 beat Fullerton's 6.69/211, and a strong 6.12/229.59 in the semifinal beat Dave Settles' 6.17/215 in the "Mr. Norm" car. He faced Denny Savage in the final. Savage had run 6.11 in his semifinal race. But the hoped-for close final never came about as Anderson's wheelie bar broke, causing suspension damage to the Vega and forcing him to shut off. Savage had his own problems, as his on fire 7.28/134 got him the trophy. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show. His speed in qualifying was 225.56, but he blew his engine and was replaced by Kenny Bernstein in eliminations. Things didn't go so well back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 21 cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, and all just got one crack at it. Unfortunately, Anderson failed to run quick enough to qualify. He was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 2 race. In the opening round, his 6.40/219.51 defeated Ray Moats' 6.75/215. But he had damaged the engine and couldn't make his semifinal date with eventual winner Billy Meyer. He then went to Baton Rouge for the Division 4 final, where he finally picked up a victory. He was long overdue. At Indy, for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, Anderson had the only Vega that qualified for the field. His 6.19/224.59 got him the #13 spot. He ran 6.25/224.43 in the first round of eliminations, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.16/236.
