Notes: In January, Ron Fassl was at Firebird Raceway for its test and tune session. Amos Satterlee was tuning the car for him and car owner J.T. Smith. It was new to them, but the body was actually Scott Kalitta's '88 car. The team only attempted one run, but the car revved up and just shut off on the line. Everything had checked out OK in the pits.

Notes: Per Bill Duke, all Sharks were 392 powered. Confirmed 7.95 at Cecil County. | Frank Federici continued to use his '67 car throughout the '68 season. A December '69 Speed and Supercar magazine claimed that the car had run a best of 7.60/203.87. Frank ran at National Trail on June 23. He made two exhibition passes. The first was an 8.24/180.72 that tied the former track ET record and set a new track speed record. On his second pass, an 8.12/181.44 reset both ends of the track record. On July 27 he made it into the final on Saturday at the Cars All-Star International at Cecil County. He had beaten Malcolm Durham earlier with a 7.95/187.10, but in the final, an 8.25/181.08 lost to Dick Loehr's 7.86/182. He didn't do as well on Sunday and failed to make the final rounds. Frank faced off against Bill Lawton at a best two out of three match race at Connecticut on August 4. In the first race, a 7.68/171 by Lawton beat his 8.58/167.28 and in the second race, he lost again when he broke a rear end giving Bill the match race win. | We formerly listed 7.895/195.

Notes: There were several incarnations of the Shark. Per Bill Duke, all Sharks were 392 powered. Frank Federici loved his Corvettes. He raced them regularly until he decided to go the Funny Car route in '67 with his first "Shark" Corvette. He ran that first Funny Car for two seasons before building this one for '69. Like his first Corvette FC, this one also used a Logghe chassis. The Corvette body came from Fiberglass Ltd., and Al Bergler did the tin. Ed Pink built the 392 Hemi. Mondello was responsible for the work on the heads. Young crew chief Phil Roberts was in charge of keeping the 1,500 hp in top condition. Frank lost a best-of-three-match race in April to Don Schumacher. In the first race of the match, not only did he foul, but the transmission let go as well. Schumacher gave him extra time to repair, and the two lined up for their second race. Once again, Frank's transmission went away, and Don got his second win and the match race victory. He beat Dick Loehr's Mustang at Connecticut two straight with a 7.90 best and then went to Maple Grove on April 27, where he defeated Al Graeber's "Tickle Me Pink" Charger three straight. Frank ran 8.18 and 8.14 to win the match. He was at Epping on May 11, where he put Jimmy King's Top Fuel engine in his car. He only made one run with the engine, a 7.99/182. Maybe "King and Marshall" were preparing to go Funny Car racing. Shortly after that (May 17), he was at Capitol Raceway for its Mr.Chevrolet Invitational race. In the opening round, Mike Burkhart's Camaro broke against him. It was a good thing it did as Frank's Corvette blew a transmission. In round two, his 8.13/180.00 defeated Mel Perry's 8.41/189. He lost in the semifinal to "Jungle Jim" Liberman when Federici had his brakes fail, and he could not stage the car. Another match race was run on May 27 at Maple Grove against Al Graeber in the "Tickle Me Pink" Charger. Frank won all three races with a best of 8.14/176.12. In July, Bruce Larson got the best of Frank at a match race at Great Meadows. Frank lost a transmission in the first race and got outrun in the second, giving Bruce two straight for the match race win. On July 20, he raced at the Cars Magazine Meet, but he lost to Don Schumacher's 7.54/201 in the first round. Frank had beaten Jim Liberman at a match race on September 6 and had hurt his motor while taking the match. He had no time to fix it as he had to race in Connecticut the next day (September 7). So, he pulled the piston and rod and ran on seven cylinders! An 8.50/174.41 beat Al Graeber's 8.74/156 in the first round, and in the semis, an 8.57/169.94 beat Kosty Ivanof's 9.01. In the final, he met Malcolm Durham and lost with an out-of-shape 13.39 to Durham's 8.11/174. But he sure had the fans pulling for him when after the loss, with both chutes dragging behind the car, he went down the return road, stopped, and did a burnout. After that, he bowed to the fans. The next day, September 8, they did it again at Connecticut, but this time with sixteen cars. Unfortunately, Frank lost fire in the first round against Paul Stefansky. Frank ran a known best of 181.44 with his own engine.

Notes: There were several incarnations of the Shark. Per Bill Duke, all Sharks were 392 powered. Photo from June 1970. | Frank attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternats, but he failed to make the field. He was not alone as Don Prudhomme, “Jungle Jim”, Don Schumacher and even the "Ramchargers" all failed to qualify. He was at Connecticut on May 31 for a sixteen-car show, but in the first round, he had handling problems and drove off the strip, losing to Gordon Mineo. A month later he was at New England where in the opening round, he was to race Paul Stefansky. Unfortunately, the Corvette lost oil pressure and Frank had to shut it down on the line. A week after that, (July 5), he was back at Connecticut for another sixteen-car show. A first-round 8.26/187.11 beat Jerry Caminito's "Hole Shot", but in the second round the "Shark's" engine blew on the line.

Notes: In 1971 Drag News reported that Wilson & Fischbach were going to have a car called the Texas Super Charger, but was it the Time Machine Mustang instead? | Fred qualified #15 at the IHRA Springnationals with a 7.34. In the first round his 7.37 lost to Clare Sanders' 6.83 in the "Chi-Town Hustler."

Notes: Rodney put the Omni body on the Don Long chassis after starting the year in the Mustang. Qualified #13 at Bakersfield at 6.625/212.76. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Dennis Geisler. On March 15 he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. He qualified #2 with a 6.25/219.51. A 6.50/216.86 beat Geisler's 7.14 in the first round. He got an easy pass in the semifinals and he faced Jim Dunn in the final. Jim got the win when Rodney hazed the tires in the final. He was back at OCIR in May for the NHRA Western Regional, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car show. The Omni raced for the last time at Fremont in June. He was there for an eight-car race where his 6.39/215.82 qualified #3. In the first round, he beat Ron Williams with a 6.61/175.78, but as can see by the speed, he had troubles on the top end when the engine let go. The car caught fire and Rodney got it stopped and he got out, but the car burnt to the ground. He was OK. Video shows the 'Smurf Blue' paint job at OCIR on OCIR 4/18/1981. Rodney came back for the World Finals at OCIR but had another fire in qualifying (times unavailable).

Notes: Bill Flynn was a former paratrooper released from the Army in '62. After he got home, he went through a series of cars, starting with a 409 Chevy and then going to Mopar products from '63 on. In '65 and the early part of '66, he ran a Hemi-powered '65 Coronet under the name of "Yankee Peddler." In Mid-'66, he debuted his new 1,800 lb. Barracuda. Flynn used a fairly stock 426 Hemi. The rods, pistons, and valves were stock, as was the compression ratio at 12.5:1. It used aluminum heads and an aftermarket Crane cam. Hilborn injectors fed the motor its fuel. The engine was set back in the chassis 18" for better weight distribution. A TorqueFlite transmission delivered the power back to a Mopar rear with 4.56 gears. (2/67 Drag Racing)Bill was in Connecticut on June 26 for a best of five match race against Bill Lawton. Flynn had beaten the "Mystery 9" Mustang several weeks earlier, and this was a rematch. Since their last match, the "Yankee Peddler" had been lowered five inches front, and a mini-spoiler had been added to keep the front end down. Flynn got out first in their first race, but Lawton drove around him to win with a 9.34/144 to Flynn's 9.63/127.11. Lawton got a little sideways off the line in the second race, and that was enough for the Mopar to win with a 9.22/147.54. Lawton really found some hp in the third race as he reset the track record with an 8.71/158 to easily win. In the fourth race, Lawton won again, getting a two-car holeshot and stretching it out with an 8.91/157 to win the match. Glass front end, doors, deck lid. Lots of history. Injected fuel, A&A Engineering fiberglass body-113 "-114" Bill Flynn adjustable wheelbase chassis. Flynn ran the car in 1967, and then Al Hanna drove it for him in '67, then Hanna bought it and called it "Phantom." Hanna ran the car into 1968 when he sold it to George Whalen, who ran it as the "Rebel Cuda" into 1970. Car, more or less, still exists. February 1967 Drag Racing magazine says the car went 8.70/160 in 1966. Bill ran a confirmed 8.80 at Englishtown (9/23/66 Drag News) and 156.52 at Connecticut (11/04/66 Drag Times). This car is currently being restored (2011).

Notes: John started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #11 and, in the first round, lost to John Collins. John failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.47/221.13 missed the 6.45 cut-off. He managed to get into the show when the #15 qualifier, Larry Fullerton, had a bad fire and could not run in eliminations. His second chance didn't help much as an off-pace 7.23/183.67 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.31/232 in the first round. He made it into the final at the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway, but he was late off the line, and his 6.62 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.66. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.35/231.95 qualified #4. Force then made his way to his first NHRA National event final by running 6.40/223.32 in the opening round over Tom McEwen's 6.43/224. A semifinal 6.52/227.27 advanced when Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" failed to fire. This put him into the final against Kenny Bernstein. Unfortunately, John's transmission broke, and he slowed to 12.27/64.01 while Bernstein picked up his first NHRA Oscar with a 6.45/233. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Columbus for the Springnationals. A 6.34/230.17 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, he improved to 6.27/220.58 to beat Bernstein's 6.36/229. But in round two, he and Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" had a tire-smoking battle that saw Colson's 6.61/225 win out over John's 7.58/126.76. Force was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.24/231.95 qualified #11. He beat Gary Burgin in the first round, and a 6.24/231 beat a tire boiling Tom Hoover in round two. Colson also boiled the hides in the semifinals, and John's 6.29/233 advanced. It was his second NHRA final of the year, and he faced a formidable competitor in Beadle. Force slowed to an off-pace 6.46/212.26 that finished second best to the "Blue Max's" 6.37/232. John was disappointed at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He failed to make the show; his 6.19/230.76 best was good for the fourth alternate. He also was unable to make the show at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. There he was the second alternate with a 6.32/224.46 best. At the NHRA World Finals held at Ontario Motor Speedway, the track was in rough shape. Force managed to qualify #6 with a 6.35/217.39. In the first round, his slower 6.70/222.22 beat Hoover's 6.65/229. A tire-smoking 7.23/217 beat Tom Ridings, who got out of shape in Joe Pisano's car in round two. The semifinals saw smoke city as both he and Tripp Shumake smoked the tires. Tripp recovered first to win with a 6.88/231 over Force's 6.99/218. John finished #8 in the NHRA Funny Car division for '79. Where was the 6.111 run? | I don't know anything about the 6.11, but Force did run 6.19 at a June '79 SIR 16-car AA-BB/FC match race over local racer Paul Luppy in the 1st round. In the final, he beat Jim Dunn with a 6.40/216 to Dunn's quicker 6.36/222. I recorded the cars (and ETs) on a cassette player. - Joe Moore
