Notes: Gary ran a career-best(to this point),5.25 at 285.53, to qualify #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the opening round, his 5.22/285.35 lost to Gary Bolger's 5.24/280. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he ended up as the first alternate at 5.49/211.86. He also failed to qualify at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, where he was the third alternate at a troubled,6.34/155.87. His problems continued at Gainesville, where the best pass he could make was 9.65/88.36. That fell far short of the 5.38 "bump" for the NHRA Gatornationals. He picked it back up again at Atlanta, where a 5.32/274.84 qualified #10 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He improved to 5.25/266.67 to beat Bolger in the first round, but he lost to K.C.Spurlock in round two. Memphis went really well for him. A new career-best 5.19/283.01 qualified #7. He then worked his way into the final by running 5.21/282.48 over Dean Skuza. In round two, Densham's 5.20/281.07 beat Spurlock, and he ran 5.20/281.51 in the semi-final to defeat Chuck Etchells. He faced Gary Clapshaw in the final. Neither had won an NHRA FC title, so it was a first-time winner no matter who won. The two had a good race, but Densham made his slowest run of the day, a 5.45/276.66, to finish runner-up to Clapshaw's 5.33/285. Rick Howard photo from 1995 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. Qualified 16th at 5.38/273.14. He lost to John Force in round one (photo).

Notes: Gary went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the show with a 5.55/272.47. He lost to Cruz Pedregon in the opening round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.55/221.23 was the second alternate. But he got into the field when #7 qualifier Paul Smith could not race. The first two alternates were not ready, so Densham got in. Unfortunately, he lost to Chuck Beal. Only sixteen cars showed up to qualify at Gainesville, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Gary ran 5.25/284.36 to take the #14 spot. But in the opening round of eliminations, his 5.21/290.32 lost to Chuck Etchell's 5.18/294. He really stepped up at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, where his career-best 5.13/293.63 qualified #4. He beat Dean Skuza in round one, with a 5.20/290.88 but his off-pace 5.38/244.43 in round two lost to Tony Pedregon's 5.12/300. Rick Howard photo from 1996 NHRA US Nats, Indy. Failed to qualify for the main show with a 17th best 5.24/292. Did qualify for Big Bud Shootout and improved to 5.05/301 in round one, but lost to Cruz Pedregon.

Notes: Gary Densham was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5.14/284.90 to qualify #9. He advanced with an easy pass in the opening round when Dean Skuza left before the tree was activated. In the second round, he ran a career-best (to this point) 4.991/305.49 to beat Al Hofmann, who shut off early in the run. That made Gary the 13th member of the Castrol Four Second Club. But in the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires, losing to Tim Wilkerson. It wasn't long after that that he was in Arizona for the next NHRA event. But this time, he had problems and could only run a best of 6.52/146.24 in qualifying, which was good for the second alternate. The Pomona 4.991 was his best ET of the year, and Gary ran his best speed at Ennis Fall at 307.27.

Notes: Darrell started the 1966 season in an injected fuel Fairlane. Then built this Mustang, first running it on injection with fuel, then blown alky, finally blown fuel. These times are blown fuel. In June, this car debuted at the NHRA Springnationals; it ran as a CC/FD. At the US Nationals in '66, Darrell ran 8.88/161 and an 8.77. On only the car's second outing, Droke ran a best of three match against Bob Sullivan at Detroit on April 17. He won the match running a best speed of 137. Darrell ran another best two out of three against Bobby Wood at Biloxi on May 14. The blown Mustang won the first race with a 9.30/140.34, but Droke fouled in the second race. In the final race for the match race win, Darrell's 8.99/149.50 beat Wood's Chevelle. He ran Arnie Beswick in a best of three at Cordova on June 25. Unfortunately, he lost two straight. In the first race, his 9.00/151.51 lost to Arnie's 8.90/160 while he fouled in the second race, and to add insult to injury, he also lost a blower belt. On August 7, Droke was at Bluegrass for a best of three match race against Walt Stevens, driving the "Piranha." Only one race between the two was run as Walt fouled, and Droke's 9.02/153.06 won, but a rod let go and damaged the engine. 8.65 at Wichita 66 (6/17/66 Drag News) | 161.29 MPH at Wichita 66 (6/17/66 Drag News). Blown fuel-113" AWB, glass body, 427 Cammer, C-6 trans combo in a rectangular-tube frame by Holman & Moody.

Notes: Car and ET info taken from the May 1971 issue of Drag Racing USA magazine. Ran 6.80 at Irwindale 1/01/71. Confirmed 6.77 at OCIR Manufacturer's Meet in 71, which was runner-up to Foster's 6.72, and were the two quickest runs of that event. - ND | Jim had one of his best season's in '71 driving his low budget 'Cuda. It started at Irwindale on January 1 for the New Year's Funny Car Festival. He qualified #1 with a 6.99/180.72. He ran a first-round 6.96 to beat Don Schumacher's tire smoking 8.20. He went on to win over Tom McEwen and set Low ET at 6.80. The next day he was at Fremont for the New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. A first-round 8.36/182.92 lost to Jim Liberman's 8.25/187.88. He took another win at the first OCIR All-Pro race. A first-round 7.08/186.33 beat Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's Cuda, and he advanced past the semifinals when Stan Shiroma fouled. In the final, he ran 6.96/203.61 for the victory over Gene Snow's off pace 7.41/152. Lions hosted the first AHRA Grand American on January 10 and Dunn ran 6.75 in qualifying among the "unseeded" cars. In the first round, he beat Tom Prock's tire smoking Vega with a 6.92/171.10. He picked up to a 6.74/191.89 in the second round while beating Richard Tharp's 6.84/215 in the "Blue Max." In the semifinals, Jim got out of shape and shut off, giving Shiroma an easy run into the final. Jim lost in the first round, to Prudhomme at the second OCIR All-Pro race on January 24. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals on February 7, he qualified #10 with a 7.22 at only 183. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, against Snow. At the third OCIR All-Pro event on February 13, he had an interesting day. In the opening round, Prudhomme’s 6.82/223 beat him when he shut off to 10.71/82.79. He got back in on the "break rule" when Shiroma broke a rear end. In the semifinals, Jim’s 7.14/194.38 lost to Rich Siroonian's engine blowing 6.87/221. Once again, he was placed, but into the field as Rich was unable to return for the final. Once again, he faced Prudhomme. He ran a sub-par 7.23/147.78 in the final that lost to the "Snake's" sizzling 6.62/226. He grabbed another win at the Bakersfield March Meet on March 8. He beat Fred Goeske, Shiroma, and Bob Pickett, in that order, to face Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" Maverick in the final. Jim took the victory with a 6.99/212.26 over Dave's 7.17/204. OCIR held an eight-car show in March and Jim beat Gary Burgin's Camaro in the first round, with a 7.03/187, but he broke and was unable to run in the semifinals so Burgin was reinstated. At OCIR's final All-Pro race on March 27, Dunn ran 7.34/164.23 over Mert Littlefield in round one, a second round 7.28/187.11 advanced when Mike Thermos fouled. In the semifinals, Condit left before the tree was activated so Jim took it easy with an 8.62/143.76 to meet with Snow in the final. But once again, the 'Cuda broke and Gene singled for the win. In April, he was runner-up to Gordon Mineo at Irwindale where he had earlier set Low ET at 7.18. On April 24, Lions held an eight-car show. Dunn qualified #2 with a 6.99. A first-round 7.08/158.45 beat Leroy Hales' 7.42/198 while a semifinal 6.92/194.80 beat Shiroma's 7.00/208. In the final, he ran 6.96 for the win over Bob McFarland's 7.65. He was at OCIR on May 1 for the Big Four Championships. He lasted until round two where his 7.25/187.89 lost to Siroonian's 6.75/219. Jim won the NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale. He qualified #1 with a 7.00/189.57 and on his way to the final, set Top Speed at 214.79. In the final, he beat Dave Beebe in the "Mr. Ed" Charger. He was back at Irwindale on May 31 for the Memorial Day Championships. Unfortunately, he fouled against low qualifier Sush Matsubara in the first round. Jim shut off to 7.54. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, Jim qualified #11 in the tough show, but he lost to Snow in the opening round. Dunn took a win the easy way on June 27 at Fremont for the NHRA's second Division 7 race. He qualified #1 with a 6.96 and in the first round, he ran a solo 7.20 to advance. In the semifinals, Tim Grose broke against him, and he soloed again. This put Jim into the final against Tom Ferraro, driving John Hoven's Mustang. Tom broke just off the line and Jim soloed again for the win with a 6.94/196.50 (Low ET). The following week (July 3), he was at OCIR for the Nitro Championships. Things didn't go so well as he lost to Norm Wilcox driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in the first round. He made up for his early loss by going to Irwindale the following day and winning the Independence Day Championships. It was an eight-car field and Jim started his march to victory by beating Nathan Valdez in the first round, with a 7.22/178.21. A semifinal 7.04/186.72 beat Beebe and in the final, his 7.08/197.36 scored the win over Matsubara's 7.23/205. Later that month, he was at Lions for a sixteen-car show. He lost in the semifinals, when his 6.91 fell to eventual winner Shiroma, who beat him with a 6.79.

Notes: Jim's 6.98 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at OCIR's second All-Pro race, but he got in after Pat Foster had problems. A first-round 6.91/186.72 lost to Jake Johnston's 6.87/215. He was awarded best engineered at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the bump at 7.154/198.42 and defeated Charlie Therwhanger in the first round with a 7.21 but lost to Jake Johnston in round two, 6.94 to 7.08. Jim ran 6.798/205.94 at the Tulsa PRA race. Set Bonneville's track record at 6.85, then reset that in the final with a win over Bob Pickett in Pete's Lil' Demon (but ET unknown). He qualified 5th at 6.464/213.27 at Ontario 1972, then ran as quick as 6.440/214.28 on his way to winning the race in an upset over Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega. These were Jim's best times of the year. Ran 6.63/213.27 at OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. Qualified at final OCIR WCS points meet with a 6.67 on the last qualifying pass. Jim qualified #7 at 6.59 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2. He beat John Lombardo in round one, 6.54 to 7.47, then took out Sush Matsubara in round two, 6.54 to 6.74. In the semis, Jim ran into eventual winner Tom McEwen, who ran an excellent 6.40 to defeat Jim's consistent 6.64. Without question, the most successful rear-engine funny in drag racing history was "Big Jim" Dunn's Cuda. This was the only one that ran a six-second time and the only one to win a national event, the 1972 NHRA Supernationals. The car featured a trick Woody Gilmore chassis with Dunn & Reath's 392 Chrysler Hemi for power. Jim and the car were the primary subject of the movie Funny Car Summer in 1972. Dunn has mentioned that this car was very difficult to drive and seldom made a complete pass. Jim's best time was an impressive 6.440 - more than half a second quicker than the next rear-engine funny car. The car was replaced by a new Satellite in 1974. It now resides in Western Canada.

Notes: Jim started his season at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.97 qualified #6. He improved to 6.92 in the first round to beat Stan Bowman's out-of-shape Vega, and in round two, his 6.91/210.28 defeated a tire-smoking Gene Snow at 7.20/143. Another 6.91 at 193.96 beat Jeff Courtie's off-pace 7.44/142 in the semifinals. He was supposed to run Butch Maas, driving M/T's new Grand Am, but Mass blew an engine on the burnout. Courtie was back in the show as the "break rule" was in effect, and the two lined up again. Dunn once again got the win, running a 6.92/200.89 for the victory over Courtie, who smoked the tires heavily and shut off. Shortly after that, he was at OCIR for the second All-Pro race. This was an eight-car show, and his 6.78 qualified #4. But he was upset in the first round, where he had to shut off with problems while his opponent, John Collins, advanced at 7.14. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The race was held over by rain over three weekends. In the first qualifying session held on February 3, Dunn's 7.80/198.67 got him the #14 spot in the sixteen-car field. But by February 18, his time had been bumped back, as now he was the third alternate. He almost got into the show, as the first two alternates got in when Jim Liberman and Dick Rosberg could not stay after the rain delay. He also had an interesting outing at the Irwindale Night Opener. It was an eight-car show, and after dealing with the horrible track conditions at Pomona, it was good to be back on a track with some "bite." Well, it just so happened that Irwindale had Bill Fredrick's rocket -car there, and the car ended up dumping a load of rocket fuel all over the left lane, making it useless. In the first round, Bobby Rowe fouled against Jim. He took an easy ride and then lost lane choice for his semifinal race against Bill Leavitt. Dunn slipped and slid all over his lane in their race while Leavitt advanced with an 8.21. With February ending so badly, you would think March was much better. It didn't start that way, as Dunn failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet. He wasn't even the first alternate, as Tommy Grove had that honor and got into the show when Jim Adolph broke. After failing to qualify at a couple more shows, he earned the pole at the final OCIR All-Pro race with a 6.65 (Low ET). His 7.07/200.89 beat Jim Murphy in the opening round, but he lost to Dave Uyehara in the next round. Dunn won the second NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale in June. He ran 6.80/212.76 in the opening round to defeat low qualifier Dave Beebe's 6.72/219. In the semifinal, Rick Ramsey's 7.17/191 lost to Dunn's 6.78/210.77. He saved his best time for the final, where he ran 6.72/215.82 for the win over Gerry Glenn. On June 16, he was back at OCIR for its Lions Championships. It was an eight-car show and his 7.28 qualified #7. He went up in smoke in round one and lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.13 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" car. Shortly after that (June 30), he was at OCIR for its Nitromethane Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, his tire-smoking 7.75/153.06 lost to Joe Lee's 7.29/191. He also lost in the first round at Irwindale's Forth of July Championships. His 7.10/143.56 lost to Gary Densham's 6.71/223. He was back at OCIR on July 22 for the PDA Championships, but his opening round 7.12/187.50 lost to Mert Littlefield's 6.77/215. Jim competed at the AHRA National Challenge, where his 6.72/204.54 qualified #16 in the 32-car field. He was upset in the opening round when Pickett ran 6.73 to beat Jim's 6.86. Jim got a win at Fremont in October for the AHRA World Championships. He qualified #13 with a 6.63, but in the first round, he improved to 6.50 to beat Tom McEwen. In round two, a 6.53 took out Tom Hoover, but he lost in the semifinals to Ed McCulloch. Dunn's 6.77 lost to Ed's slower 6.93, but McCulloch lost an engine and could not repair it in time for the final. With the "break rule" in effect, Jim was brought back to face Gerry Glenn in the final. Jim ran 6.61/215.82 for the victory over Glenn's 6.77/204. He then went to Irwindale for the East-West Funny Car Championships and lost to Richard Tharp, driving the "Blue Max" in the first round. This was a rear-engined funny car. Jim qualified at NHRA Ontario at 6.478/203.61. In round one, he ran 6.53/207.37 to beat Gene Snow's close 6.58/192.71 but fell to eventual winner Tom McEwen in round two, 6.50/204 to 6.77/187.50.

Notes: After being in the back seat for the previous two seasons with his rear-engined Funny Car, Jim Dunn had Woody Gilmore of Race Car Engineering build him a conventional car for the '74 season. The old car tended not to go straight. The new 116" chassis was fitted with a 426 Hemi with a Reath 1/2 stroker crank that gave it a 484 displacement. The cam came from Engle. Sush Matsubara O-ringed, surfaced, and polished the heads. Ed Pink also helped out on much of the engine. The top end of the motor used a Cragar blower drive and manifold, and Marc Danekas of Air Research modified the GMC 6/71 blower. Enderle injection sat up top. A Lenco transmission transmitted the power back to a Ford rear with 4.30 gears. Mr. Ed supplied the body. The overall weight of the Satellite was 1,790 lbs. | Jim debuted his new Satellite at the Irwindale Grand Premiere on January 12. He qualified #10 in the sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 7.14/206.47 beat Gerry Glenn who got out of shape in the Plueger and Gyger Mustang. Unfortunately, Jim's Satellite broke on the run, and he was done for the day. Replaced rear-engine FC. Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Jim ran 6.480/221.67 at Indy US Nationals 9/74 (#13 qualifier), 6.50/221.13 at Irwindale, and 6.426/212.76 at Ontario.

Notes: Jim ran at the Fremont New Year's Day Funny Car race. He advanced past the first round with a 6.98/182 when Gene Snow's Vega broke. A second-round 6.66/200.89 advanced again when Ed McCulloch broke, but he lost in the semifinal. He then went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere and qualified fourth. He beat Liberman in round two with a 6.48/221.13 and a 6.46 in the semis, beat a tire-smoking Raymond Beadle. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme, who dropped a 6.32 to put him on the trailer. At the AHRA Winternationals, he lasted until the second round when his motor came up ailing against Shirl Greer (6.66/223.32). Jim just made the field at the NHRA Winternationals when he ran a 6.45 for the sixteenth spot. He lost to Charlie Therwhanger in the second round. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. It was a twelve-car show, and his 6.41/222.77 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he boiled the hides to a 7.11/199.28 in the first round and lost to John Lombardo's 6.63/191. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He broke against Neil Leffler driving Jim Terry's Mustang in the first round. In March, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West. He qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.78. A first-round 6.71 beat Henry Harrison. A 7.08 in the second round beat Leffler, but he broke and could not run in the semifinal, so Leffler was reinstated. Irwindale held its 32-car Coca-Cola Championships in April, and Jim ran 6.80/187.11 to beat Jeff Courtie's 6.92, but in round two, he had problems and shut down against Dale Pulde in the "Eastern Raider." He runner-upped again in May at the Fremont Northern Nationals, where McCulloch's 6.27/224 got Jim in the final. Dunn was back at Irwindale for the Doubleheader (motorcycles and FCs). He warmed up with 6.59/175. Leffler fouled against him in the first round, and he coasted through. In the semifinals, his 6.57 (Low ET) at 210.77 beat Gary Burgin's 6.76/208. He faced Jake Johnston in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Vega in the final, and despite running a strong 6.67/220.58, he finished runner-up to Jake's 6.57/223. In June, he raced at Sacramento for the NHRA Division 7 race. A 7.20 advanced past a fouling Billy Meyer in the first round, but he broke against Gary Burgin in the semis. He raced at the OCIR Nitro Championships but failed to reach the finals. Notes: Jim started his season at Fremont for the Nitro Bowl race. In the first round, his off-pace 7.08 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.52. He then went to OCIR for its season opener. A first-round 6.48/213.27 beat Raymond Beadle's troubled 7.24/144 in the "Blue Max." Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner John Lombardo in the next round. He was the fourth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.43/208.81 best. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. Jim's 6.49/195.22 stopped an out-of-shape Ed McCulloch in round one, but he lost to Gordie Bonin in the semifinals. The NHRA Division Seven Opener was held at Fremont, and Jim ran 6.65/203.61 to qualify #10. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.93 lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.24. On March 30, OCIR held its annual "Fox Hunt" race. Twenty-seven cars showed to qualify for the 16-car field, and Dunn failed to qualify. In April, Ontario Motor Speedway held a four-car match race. Dunn was one of the cars competing. In his first race, both he and Jake Johnston shut down early, with Jake's 6.51/174 winning over his 7.00/156. In his second race, his 6.77/176 fell to Don Prudhomme's 6.40/200. Jim's only other NHRA national event was in Seattle, where he qualified #15 at 6.546/214.28. He lost to Tom Hoover in round one, 6.38/220 to 6.70/178.92 | In the later part of the year (SIR 64), they ran a 417, which was lettered on the upper part of the body, as in this OCIR picture. Aluminum heads and the whole nine. In '77, D&V went to a late model, listed in the Fallnationals program as a Milo. - Joe Moore

Notes: Jim started the year by winning over an eight-car field at Irwindale on January 1. He beat Billy Meyer in the final. At the OCIR Opener, he beat an up-in-flames Jim Liberman in the first round with a 7.03/177, but he lost in the semifinals. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.77 but lost early. Jim did well at the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle, qualifying #2 at 6.26/214.79. In round one, he beat Jim Moore, 6.51/204.08 to 7.66/176. He took out Rob Williams in round two, 6.42 to 6.81 (no speeds reported). Jim took a close win over Tripp Shumake in the semis, 6.28/229.00 to 6.29/223. He shut off to an 11-second run in the final, and Billy Meyer got the win at 6.53/211. Jim was the first alternate at the Ontario World Finals at 6.31/226.70. | Dunn was 3rd quickest at the '77 64 FCs at SIR at 6.46, after doing a burnout *from the finish line* after the all-cars fire-up on the track. Notes: Dunn ran the old Satellite the first half of the year. He ran it at the Northwest National Open WCS, but this car debuted brand new, in grey primer, at the June round-robin Funny Car meet, still putting on hose clamps. Jim holeshot Nick Harmon hazing off the line in the first round, 6.97 to 6.95. New at the June SIR Funny Car event, arrived shortly before 6 pm eliminations. Doner said the Dunns drove 24 hours straight from California to get there in time. I didn't know their GMC Suburban going to get the car was a Diesel and thought something was wrong with the engine. - Joe Moore | Jim qualified 6th at the Fallnationals with a 6.890 and won the first-round when Dennis Geisler didn't show. But Jim crossed the centerline against Dale Pulde in the second round and was disqualified. That was his only NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Jim was the first alternate at NHRA Pomona with a 6.39 (no speed reported). He ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet. After an easy first-round win, he ran 6.40/224.32 in round two over low qualifier Dave Condit who got out of shape and shut off. Unfortunately, the car broke against eventual winner Simon Menzies in the semi-final. At OCIR's 12 annual Nitro Championships in July, Jim qualified #1 with a 6.22. He went to the final, beating Pat Foster when both had sub-par runs, but Dunn won. Jim's next national event was Seattle, where he had a great race. He qualified #4 at 6.10/236.84. In round one, he beat Kenny Bernstein with another 6.100/238.98 to 6.24/238.09. Round two saw Jim take a 6.14/232.55 decision over Tom Ridings at 6.49/184. He upset Don Prudhomme in the semis, 6.17/223.32 to 6.26/223. Jim shut off to a troubled 12.11/64 in the final, giving the win to Raymond Beadle at 6.22/230. Jim was the 7th alternate at Ontario (times not reported). Photo from Indy 1980. | At a June '79 SIR 16-car AA-BB/FC match race, John Force beat Jim Dunn with a 6.40/216 to Dunn's quicker 6.36/222. Notes: Photo from Indy 1980. | Jim qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.21/235.60. He won the Bakersfield March Meet at Famoso. A 6.18/227.84 beat Tom McEwen and in the semifinals, he ran 6.36/228.42 to beat Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's Arrow. In the final, he ran the low qualifier (6.04) Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" smoked the tires and Jim ran 6.35/231.95 for the victory. In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.07/226.70. In round one, he repeated that time with a 6.07 at 231.95 to beat Ron Williams. In the semifinals, he lost to Sherm Gunn. At the third NHRA Division 6 race at OCIR, Jim ran 6.29/230.76 to qualify #6. He smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Ed McCulloch.

Notes: Jim failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Elroy Airport for an eight-car show shortly after that. It was Elroy's first-ever race, and traction was rough, to say the least. Jim qualified #2 with a 7.00/211.76. A 7.12 in the first round, beat Jack Maroney, while his 7.10/217.38 (Top Speed) beat Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. He faced Craig Epperly in the final, and Dunn's vast experience from years of racing on poor tracks made the difference as he ran 7.01/216.86 to pick up the win over Epperly, who smoked the tires and lost. As mentioned, he qualified well at the Bakersfield March Meet. Unfortunately, he got crossed up against Bob Pickett in the first round, and shut off. He skipped the NHRA Gatornationals to run an eight-car show at OCIR being run the same day (March 15). Dunn qualified #1 with a 6.24/229.59 and went on to win, stopping Rodney Flournoy in the final. He had also set Low ET at 6.18. On April 5, he was at Green Valley for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. He qualified #1 with a 6.19/227.84, but he smoked the tires in round one, and lost to Shumake. OCIR hosted the next Western Regional, and Jim qualified #3 for the race with a 6.28/229.00. In the first round, Sherm Gunn had problems and shut off while Jim took it easy with a 7.03/196.50 to advance. He lost to the meet's eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the semifinals. Dunn's 6.32/214.79 was no match for the "Snake's" 6.17/238. At the end of June, he was at Sacramento for another Western Regional event. His 6.26/214.29 qualified second to Gordie Bonin's 6.24/236. These two would work their way into the final together. In the opening round, Jim's 6.28/218.96 defeated John Force's 6.87/181. In the semifinal, Hank Johnson's 6.48/221 lost to his 6.25/211.27. Both he and Bonin had been close in times during eliminations, with Bonin having a slight edge. It stayed that way as Bonin's 6.16/237 got the victory over Dunn's 6.19/213.38. Jim won the NHRA World Finals and was runner up to Raymond beadle at the US Nationals. Bakersfield at 6.286/224.43. Ran 6.050/238.72 at OCIR Finals. Jim won the 1981 OCIR World Finals over Gary Burgin.
