Notes: On May 13, Densham was at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 Opener. He ran well, reaching the finals against Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer Vega. Unfortunately, Gary's Pinto broke on the line and Foster soloed for the win. During the 1972 OCIR Hang Ten Funny Car 500, Gary ran a 6.89 while beating Gary Burgin in the first round. He lost to Jim Dunn in the second round with a red light. Ran 6.90 in the semis of the Sacto WCS event, but lost to Dave Beebe's holeshot aided 6.91.

Notes: Densham qualified for the sixteen-car field at Irwindale's Grand Premiere on January 12. Unfortunately, his first-round 6.99 lost to Gordon Swearingen's 6.94 in Jim Terry's car. Gary attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.667/216.34 was good for the first alternate. Gary was runner up to Twig Ziegler at Division 7 points meet at Bonneville on 8/18/74. He also ran 6.85 at Pomona WCS.

Notes: Gary indeed ran 6.31 in '76, but it came with his old 'Cuda in April at Irwindale's Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. Densham brought his new Monza and his old 'Cuda to the race. He had trouble with the new car and shut off against John Lombardo in the first round, while he reached the final against Don Prudhomme in his old car. But he blew the engine in the final and finished runner-up to the "Snake." Gary did not run any NHRA national events this year.

Notes: Gary started the '77 season at Fremont's Nitro Bowl race. There were ten FCs competing and they all made two runs. Gary lost his first race to Bob Pickett who ran Low ET and Top Speed in beating him (6.49/210). But in his second race, Densham’s 7.54/189 beat Phil Castronovo. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals.

Notes: Gary did all the work to create the mold for the first Datsun body but needed Ken Cox's help building it. After the first body had been pulled from the mold and was curing, Cox sold it to John Collins. So, after all that work, he didn't get to debut the first 280Z body! Densham was at OCIR on May 17 for the third NHRA Division Six race. He qualified on the "bump" with a 6.38. In the opening round of eliminations, he and Tom McEwen both smoked the tires with the "Goose" recovering first to score a 6.61/181 win over Gary's 7.64/149. Gary attempted to qualify at one NHRA national event, the World Finals. He was the last DNQ (times not reported).

Notes: Burned to the ground at OCIR. | Gary started the '81 season by qualifying #3 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.87/211. He beat Jim Moore in the first round, with a 6.79/215, but in the semifinal against Gordie Bonin he smoked the tires and shut off. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Famoso for the annual Bakersfield March Meet where he used a 6.630/218.44 to qualify #14 in the field. A first-round 6.52/224.42 beat a tire-smoking Bonin, but in round two, he had trouble and shut down to a 10.98 loss to Dale Armstrong. The following week (March 15), OCIR held a race that had 14 FCs trying to qualify for the eight available spots. Densham just made the show with a 6.44/227.27 that held up for the "bump." He lost early, however. He had a best of three match race against Bryan Raines at Las Vegas where he took the match by winning two straight with times of 6.47 and 6.70. At the NHRA Western Regional at OCIR, he ended up as first alternate for the eight-car show with a 6.56. He wasn't alone in his non-qualifying as Kenny Bernstein and John Force among others were behind him.

Notes: Gary attempted to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, but a best of 6.411/231.36 failed to make the field. | Pete Jackson injector installed later in '83, Henry Velasco the CC last part of the year. Ran a series of 5.97s/5.99s for early alternate at Indy (ultimately, first alternate at 5.975/245.23), 5.904/238.09 at the '83 Finals with the roof hatch flying off halfway down. (Lost on a holeshot to Denny Savage in round one, (6.188/231.95 to Gary's 6.150/231.95). In January '84, ND reported Densham winning a Sacramento match race win at 6.02/241, with the drive line breaking up, causing injuries. Densham/ND said he "could wear a narrower shoe" after the incident. - Joe Moore | Photo from 1983 US Nationals.

Notes: Gary did not have a pleasant start for the '84 season. Early in the year, he was at Sacramento for the East/West Funny Car Shootout. He set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.02/241.90, but he faced John Force in the final. Gary's reverser exploded and severely damaged his foot. Due to his accident, he didn't run again until mid-season. I believe Densham used a hand throttle at his first appearance at Carlsbad in April or May when Harrison smacked the guard rail with the Litdke Trans Am. In June, he was at Carlsbad for an eight-car show. All cars were to make two passes, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. He beat Ray Higley in the first race with a 6.47/159, and in the second race, he had a fuel leak and shut off. He failed to make the final. | Ran at an Oct. 5th '84 Funny Car match race at Carlsbad. The race featured a 'Goose/Grose final. Grose went 5.93 and 5.89 to win. Chi-Town was there (6.05) Dunn's new Mustang, Densham, Checker Auto Parts Citation, Amos Satterlee the CC, and Tom Ridings in the Lidtke Trans Am. - Joe Moore

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Gary was first alternate at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 6.09/241.15 best. He also failed to qualify with a best of 6.22 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March (May) Meet. But when Steve Chrisman's car broke in qualifying, Gary was inserted into the field. He beat Gary Cochran in the first round, and in the semifinals, a 6.09/238.72 beat Denny Savage. In the finals he faced the "Hawaiian" driven by Rick Johnson. Gary ran a final round 6.34/234.98, but lost to Rick's 5.94/241. On April 6th, he was at Firebird Raceway for the Coors Funny Car Championships. All eight-cars made two runs with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Gary beat Ron Fassl in his first race with a 5.99/237.46 and a 6.03/231.95 beat Rick Johnson's 6.02/252 in the "Hawaiian" in his second race. The only other car to run in the fives was John Force, but he exploded a supercharger and was unable to run so Rick's 6.02 made the final. Once again Densham faced Johnson and once again the results were the same with Gary's 5.98/238.09 getting the victory over the "Hawaiian's" 6.06/252. The first NHRA race he ran after the Winternationals was the Mile High Nationals in July. There he qualified #14 with a 6.29/222.22. However, he fouled away a 6.34 in the first round, against Ed McCulloch.

Notes: In January, Gary started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.98/225.56. He shut off with tire shake in round one, while his opponent, John Force, advanced with a 5.87/244. He was the third alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 5.86/244.29. In April, Densham was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coors Funny Car race. It was a ten-car show, and all cars ran two rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Gary's first-round 6.05/239.36 lost to Chris Lane's quicker-leaving 6.07/226. He won his second race with a 6.13/234.98 over Jim Dunn's 6.33. Unfortunately, his ETs were not quick enough to get him into the final. Sacramento also held a similar ten-car show that ran the same way. Gary ran a career-best (to this point) 5.74/252.81 in his first race only to lose to Force's 5.73/254. He won his second race with a 6.10/232 over Wally Giavia. His 5.74 from the first-round advanced him into the final, where he would race Force again. John ran a track record 5.57 at 259 to win over Gary's 5.98/236.85. He ran 6.127/234.31 at NHRA Denver. Gary sold the car to Jim Walton in Australia.

Notes: Gary qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.734/251.11. His 5.687/259.06 lost to Brad Tuttle's 5.51/267 in the first round. Gary's next event was Columbus, where he was the final DNQ with an off-pace 6.352/184.84. A 5.94/245.23 qualified #6 at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. But an opening-round 6.01/240.64 lost to eventual winner Bruce Larson's 5.59/263. Shortly after that, Gary was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #11 with a 5.813/246.77, but his improved 5.741/252.03 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.50/262 in round one. Gary was the fourth alternate at Indy with 5.740/256.92 best. He was the third alternate at Seattle at 5.875/252.59. Gary ended the year with another DNQ effort at the World Finals. His 5.820/201.25 was the sixth alternate. Photo from Columbus 1988.

Notes: Photo from the 1990 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. | The '90 season saw Densham without the aid of his long term crew chief, Henry Velasco. He showed up at Firebird Raceway for it's test and tune race in Jan with Richard Bays turning the wrenches. Gary also got a sponsor, Jerry Lowery's California Discount Warehouse. He made two runs at Firebird, a 5.80/231.89 and a 5.47 that came with a career best speed (to this point) of 267.06. Gary attempted to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.63/262.31 was only good for first alternate. He did make the show at the second NHRA race of the season, the Arizona Nationals where a 5.55/263.38 qualified on the "bump spot." He lost to KC Spurlock in the first round. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he still lost in the first round, (to Mark Oswald), but he qualified #13 with a 5.58/255.17.

Notes: Gary started the season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He lost to Richard Hartman in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he ran a career-best of 5.39 to qualify #7. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost. NHRA's third race of the year was the Supernationals at Houston. Densham qualified #14 and lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The story was much the same at the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #13 and lost to Mike Dunn in the first round. A 5.52/243.32 qualified #12 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again he lost in the first round; this time Mark Oswald got him. Things didn't go so well at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Gary's best of 5.63/250.62 was good for the second alternate. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.48/249.65 qualified #12, but in the first round, his 5.59/245.23 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.55/270. Only thirteen cars went up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals so qualifying wasn't so tough. Still, Gary ran 5.55/237.27 for the #9 spot. He lost to John Force in the first round. NHRA's next stop was at Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals. Gary continued to do well in qualifying, running a 5.47/258.69 for the #14 spot, but he was still looking for his first-round win in competition. He didn't get it here as in the first round, his 5.56/248.61 lost to Force's 5.36/267. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Gary qualified #8 with a 5.63/239.61. He finally got his first-round win when his 5.66/241.67 beat Jerry Caminito. A 5.69/218.18 lost to McCulloch's 5.55/256 in round two. On July 28, NHRA held its California Nationals at Sonoma. Gary qualified #13 with a 5.54/255.75. He lost in the first round, to Force. At least losing in the first round, was better than not qualifying at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. There he was the first alternate with a best of 5.56/245.70. It was back to his first-round rut at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #9, running 5.55/251.53 for the spot, but a 5.58/254.23 in round one, lost to Jim White's 5.38/276 in the "Hawaiian." He was disappointed at Indianapolis when his 5.52/256.04 failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals (second alternate). If that wasn't bad enough, he also failed to make the field at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Densham was the first alternate with a best of 5.56. He had a bit of luck on his side and got into the show when Whit Bazemore was unable to run. Gary improved to a 5.42/255.46 in the first round, but he still lost to Dunn's 5.30/274. He made the field easily at the NHRA Heartland Nationals where his 5.41/260.11 was #11 on the grid. But his first-round rut remained when he lost to Chuck Etchells' 5.39/267 with a 5.49/256.48. He got his second win light of the NHRA season at the Chief Nationals. He qualified #15 with a 5.51/256.84 and in the first round, Oswald lost a blower and Gary advanced with another 5.51 at 249.79. In round two, his 5.52/244.76 lost to Del Worsham's 5.34/279. Densham ended his '91 NHRA season in a bad way, by not qualifying at Pomona for the World Finals. His 5.53/258.10 best was the second alternate for the field. Photo from Indy 1991.

He made the show at the NHRA Gatornationals, qualifying on the "bump" with a 5.49/268.33, but lost to low qualifier John Force in round one. Densham opened some eyes at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals when he ran 5.25/275.90 to qualify #2. He beat a tire-smoking Gary Bolger in the first round, with a 5.57/265.01. In round two, his 5.43/265.25 beat Paul Smith, but in the semifinals, he ran an off pace 6.04/164.17 that lost to Worsham's 5.35/277. Rick Howard photo from 1992 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. Notes: Gary attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he ended up as the first alternate with a best of 5.57/252.03. He was able to qualify #13 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, but he hurt his motor on the 5.52/261.87 pass and could not run eliminations. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he ran 5.34/267.93 to qualify #11. Unfortunately, he had problems against Gordon Mineo in the first round, and shut off to a 7.40/104.28. He did not attend the NHRA Gatornationals or the Winston Invitational at Rockingham, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There a 5.24/274.64 qualified #7. In the first round, an off-pace 5.43/246.03 lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.27/280. He skipped the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis and the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown, but he was back on the NHRA tour at Columbus for the Springnationals where Gary ran 5.36/269.94 to qualify #13. Eventual winner Gordie Bonin's 5.27/282 stopped his 5.46/261.47 in the first round. The ninth NHRA race of the season was the Western Nationals, where Densham ran 5.63/252.45 to qualify #15. He picked up to a 5.47/264.08 in the first round, but he again lost to Bonin at 5.40/280. Rick Howard photo from 1993 NHRA US Nats (Big Bud Shootout), Indy. DNQ for both Monday eliminations (19th overall with a best of 5.39/268.89) and the Big Bud Shootout.

Notes: Gary qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.337/276.49. Unfortunately, the car broke in the first round against eventual winner K.C. Spurlock. He went to Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals but was the second alternate with a 5.704/253.02 best. He qualified #10 at Houston Spring at 5.286/279.24 and went to the semifinals. Gary qualified #15 at the Gators at 5.322/272.47 but lost to John Force in round one. He qualified #14 at Atlanta at 5.361/252.31 and went two rounds. Gary qualified #11 at Atlanta at 5.360/280.46 and improved to 5.344/280.11 in a round one win over Gary Bolger. He beat Jim Epler in round two with a 5.472/274.72 before losing round three to Gordie Bonin. Gary qualified #12 at the Mopar Parts Nationals at 5.328 but lost in round one. He also qualified #12 at Columbus (5.366/274.72) and lost in round one, again. He ran 5.374/272.14 in qualifying #11 at Topeka but lost to Kenji Okazaki in round one. Gary also had similar results at Bandimere (5.749/246.44) and Sonoma (5.359/270.59). He ran 5.285/272.97 to qualify #14 at Seattle, but his round one losses continued. But Gary went all the way to the finals at Brainerd in August, losing to John Force there with best times of 5.335/277.94. He was a disappointing DNQ at Indy (5.641/207.37) but ran 5.317/275.31 at Maple Grove to qualify #9. Gary Bolger got a measure of revenge with a first-round win. He went 5.270/283.01 (#10) at Topeka Fall but did not get past round one again. The same thing happened at the Chief Auto Parts Nationals, although Gary went 5.258 to qualify. He also made the field at the World Finals with a 5.281/282.48 but fell in round one, again. All year, it was a gutsy performance as the independent mixed it up with the big boys.

Notes: Gary ran a career-best(to this point),5.25 at 285.53, to qualify #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the opening round, his 5.22/285.35 lost to Gary Bolger's 5.24/280. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he ended up as the first alternate at 5.49/211.86. He also failed to qualify at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, where he was the third alternate at a troubled,6.34/155.87. His problems continued at Gainesville, where the best pass he could make was 9.65/88.36. That fell far short of the 5.38 "bump" for the NHRA Gatornationals. He picked it back up again at Atlanta, where a 5.32/274.84 qualified #10 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He improved to 5.25/266.67 to beat Bolger in the first round, but he lost to K.C.Spurlock in round two. Memphis went really well for him. A new career-best 5.19/283.01 qualified #7. He then worked his way into the final by running 5.21/282.48 over Dean Skuza. In round two, Densham's 5.20/281.07 beat Spurlock, and he ran 5.20/281.51 in the semi-final to defeat Chuck Etchells. He faced Gary Clapshaw in the final. Neither had won an NHRA FC title, so it was a first-time winner no matter who won. The two had a good race, but Densham made his slowest run of the day, a 5.45/276.66, to finish runner-up to Clapshaw's 5.33/285. Rick Howard photo from 1995 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. Qualified 16th at 5.38/273.14. He lost to John Force in round one (photo).
