Notes: Custy was at Bonneville Raceway on August 22 for the NHRA Division Seven race. In the opening round, he beat Bill Leavitt's off-pace 8.29 with a 7.44. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semi-final and made an easy pass. He faced Tom Ferraro in the final, and both ran 7.33 (Custy at 200.45), but the win light came on in Ferraro's lane. He ran the Labor Day Classic at Green Valley held in the first week of September. He had run a best of 7.25/192.30 before meeting Art Ward in the final. Art blew his engine on the line, and Dick made an easy pass for the victory.

Notes: Dick Custy's old Mustang was a tough competitor on the AHRA circuit. On June 1 he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.57/212.27. He beat Vic Cecelia in Charlie Proite's "Telstar" and low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" to get into the finals to meet Jim Liberman. Dick grabbed the victory with a 7.10/189. Also in June, he was runner-up at NHRA's Division 5 race at Thunder Valley Raceway in Marion, SD He lost to Topper Kramer in the final. In July he raced at Green Valley for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.64 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 6.78 beat Johnny Valadez in the "Mexican Revolution" Vega. In round two, he ran another 6.78 to beat Larry Gould's SOHC Ford powered car. Unfortunately, the car failed to fire for the semifinals and he was replaced on the "break rule" by Al Vanderwoude. Dick also made it to Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals, but lost early.

Notes: AKA The Kansas Kid. Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The second was held on Saturday and Sunday, March 6/7. Prock won Saturday with a 5.974 at 233.76 mph over Custy. Dick was at Atco Dragway in May for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. In the first round, his 6.74/191.48 beat Fred Goeske's better 6.67/216. But the Coke races were run with all eight cars running the first round, with the four cars that ran the lowest ETs advancing into the final four. Both Goeske and Custy advanced, and they reran each other in the semi-final. This time, Fred's 6.58/222 got the better of Custy, who shut down at 8.16/128. Dick was at Englishtown on June 6 for another Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. He smoked the tires in his first-round race against Tripp Shumake. He later came back out to run a consolation race against Al Marshall. Dick ran 6.61, but Al's Mustang ran Low ET to win their match at 6.47. He also ran 6.52/164.83 at OCIR. | Saw this car at the 1976 SIR 64 Funny Car event, completed in the overcast daytime in a rush. It was my last chance to see some early 70s type FCs (Halibrands in front, 6/71s, steel motors). The CC Cavalcade ran their own bracket, Shumake over Custy. - Joe Moore

Notes: Bill attempted to qualify at Firebird's Super Bowl of Drag Racing, but his 6.94/211.76 was far from making the field. Daily was booked into the NHRA D4 race at Green Valley, TX. He did not run NHRA national events in 1986. The car became Jim White's Mohawk Express in 1987. Rick Johnson drove the car also at the Texas Motorplex in 1986. Qualified #5 at ADRA Spokane 8/86 at 6.021/236.22. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9.

Notes: The "Tennessee Bo-Weevil" had been a fixture at the NHRA US Nationals for 17 years when this car was built for the '72 season. Car owner Ray Godman spent $18,000 to build this 'Cuda. It had nothing but the best parts: a Woody Gilmore (RCE) 119" chassis, a KB Hemi, and Don Kirby paint. The Hemi used a stroker crank with M/T rods holding Black 5.6:1 pistons. A Lunati flat tappet cam was used. Jentzen Porting Service prepared the heads. The intake manifold, blower drive, and headers were all by Cragar, while Air Research built the GMC 6/71. Most funny cars by this time were running Enderle injection, but the "Bo-Weevil" was still using a Hilborn unit. The motor burned 98% nitro. The Lenco transmission fed the power back to a Halibrand rear end. Kenny Youngblood did the lettering. Preston Davis was at Lakeland in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.06. He had an easy first-round, and then in round two, Larry Arnold fouled against him. In the semifinal, Davis lost to Dale Pulde, who was driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Early in April, he was at Chandler Raceway in Indiana for a four-car show against Pulde, Clare Sanders in the "Chi-Town Hustler," and Gary Henderson driving the "Super Duster." I have no times for the race, but the final came down to Pulde and Sanders. Davis won the NHRA Division 2 Opener on April 9 at Phenix City. His final round 7.25/205.49 beat Paul Aray. Later in the month, he was at Blaney for another four-car match. Once again, he ran well but failed to reach the final. Preston qualified #6 at Indy at 6.547/223.88 but crossed the center line against Al Hanna in round one, and lost. He ran 6.66/213.27 at the Tulsa PRA race (where Preston was runner up to McEwen's 6.61). Another amazing team that somehow made both races on the same weekend. Preston also ran 6.619/215.31 at NHRA Amarillo 1972. Preston had a big wheelstand at the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario, and when the car landed, the steering was knocked out. He ended up hitting the wall on a qualifying run. We need confirmation and location of the 6.46.

Notes: Davis was at Beeline Dragway on January 28 for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the 32 car field. He also was unable to qualify at NHRA Pomona (times not reported). Things did not go well at Lakeland on March 4 during qualifying for the IHRA Winternationals. He and Lou Azar, in the "Fireball Vega," were both about to make a qualifying run. Lou got out of shape and crossed into Preston's lane, and the Mustang ran headfirst into the Vega. Both cars were damaged pretty badly, but both drivers were ok. Preston tried and failed to qualify at NHRA Gainesville as well (times not reported). That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. Davis had a bad fire in qualifying at Blaney in July for the NHRA Division 2 race. He only received a slight burn to his right hand, but the car was severely damaged. Yellow car departed from Ray's traditional red, white, blue scheme as it was painted on the coast before checking with him.

Notes: Rusty failed to qualify for an eight-car show at OCIR on January 14, but he got in when Tom Sturm's Corvair had motor damage while qualifying and couldn't run. Delling was the first alternate, but his first-round 9.36/107.39 lost to Jim Liberman's 7.85/183. On January 28, the team went to Lions for the AHRA Winter Funny Car meet. A 9.39 qualified, but they lost early. At Lions on February 24, an 8.41 qualified sixteenth and a first-round 8.08/181.44 defeated Gene Conway's 8.13/176.81. An 8.44/170.45 advanced over Bob Sullivan's ailing Camaro in round two. In the semifinal, he lost a motor and the race to Fred Goeske's 8.98. He qualified in the unlucky #13 spot at Irwindale on March 3 but lost a close one in the first round, when his 8.29 lost to Steve Bovan's 8.26. He grabbed a big win at Fremont on March 17 for the West Coast Championships. A final round 8.22/177.16 stopped Conway for the money. Rusty was at Lions on March 30, where all cars ran three races. He won his first race over Gene Conway's new Firebird with an 8.37/172.74. In his second race, Conway beat his 8.45/170.45 with an 8.18/173. In his third race, Delling ran a consistent 8.39/171.42 to beat the Fisher-Greth car. He was back at OCIR on April 13 when 22 cars ran the first round, and the eight lowest ET's advanced into round two. Rusty ran an off pace 8.94/171.75 that lost to Hayden Proffitt's Rebel at 8.51/168. His ET failed to advance into the second round. Lions held an eight-car show on May 18 and the "New Breed" qualified #3 with an 8.52/166.85. He picked up to an 8.33/158.85 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Dale Williams' 8.17/173 in Jess Tyree's Firebird. A sixteen-car show was run at Irwindale on June 22, and Rusty lasted until round two. In the first round, Andy Clary broke on the line, and Delling advanced with an 8.38/172.41, but in round two, his 8.39/172.08 lost to Gas Ronda's Mustang at 8.07/175. Six FC's ran at Las Vegas on July 27 and the "New Breed" was there. Dellings' 8.33 defeated Steve Bovan's 8.59 in the "Super Chief in the opening round." Rusty had problems in the semifinal, and his 14.35 at 150.00 lost to Kip Brundage's 8.58/169 in the "Parts Mart" Camaro. Kip lost his engine on the pass, so Delling was reinstated for the final against Gordon Mineo. But his off-pace 9.06/165.44 finished runner-up to Mineo's 8.55/146. On August 10, he was at OCIR for a sixteen-car show. Jack Chrisman's Comet broke in the opening round, so the "New Breed" advanced with an 8.33/176.12. In the second round, his 8.19/178.57 beat Wendell Shipman's 8.29/185. In the semifinal, he slowed to 8.48/178.92, which lost to Conway's 8.29/171 Jeep. On September 29, Delling was one of 35 Funny Car drivers that showed up at Lions for an eight-car show. All the cars ran a qualifying round, with the eight lowest ET's advancing into the eight-car field. Delling qualified for the field, but he lost to Dick Bourgeois in the first round. Also ran 8.22 at Fremont. Did Pete Everett own this car? Rusty also drove this car at the 1968 OCIR Mfg. Championships.

Notes: Delling drove the Javelin to several wins. The most notable was the 'World News Nationals' in Kansas City in 1969. At the HRM Championships on March 16, Rusty ran an 8.10 to qualify #13. In the first round, an 8.12/180.72 lost to Rich Siroonian. He failed to qualify at Lions on March 22 when 22 cars showed for an eight-car field. He was in good company as Tom McEwen, Ray Alley, Dick Loehr, Dale Pulde and others, all failed in their bids to make the field. He raced at the second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open on May 3, where an 8.70 qualified second on the AMC team. In the first race, Gordon Mineo's 7.95/178 beat his 8.23/179.28. Rusty ran a 9.49/173.41 in the second race over a broken Dave Beebe. A week later, on May 10, he was at Lions for an eight-car show where an 8.22 qualified #4. He improved that time to an 8.14 in the first round, but lost to Larry Fullerton. An 8.07 qualified #13 at OCIR for the Funny Car 500 on May 31. Steve Bovan lost a driveshaft in the first round, against him. Unfortunately, in round two, it was Delling's turn to have trouble when his car caught fire while staging. He was ok, but out of the race. Back at OCIR on July 19 for the PDA Championships, an 8.26 qualified #11. He failed to make it into the final round. He lost a close one to Ed Lenarth's 7.87/165 to Rusty's 7.92/167.39 in the first round, at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale on August 16. Another first-round loss came at Lions on August 30 for the Drag News Nationals. Johnny Wright's 7.78/192 beat the Javelin's ailing 9.20/176.12. As the season went on, the little Javelin seemed to pick up the pace. On September 1, a 7.90 qualified #7 for an eight-car show at Irwindale. He lost with an even better 7.84/186.36 in the first round, to Wright's 7.81. Another eight-car show followed on September 6 at OCIR. An 8.03 qualified #6, but he improved to a first-round 7.81/182.55 over a crossed-up Larry Fullerton. In the semifinal, a blown transmission ended his chances against Mike Van Sant. On September 13, Lions held another eight-car show, but they decided to run two fields with so many cars on hand. The top eight were in bracket one, and the cars that failed to make the top eight were in bracket two. Delling failed to make the top eight, so he raced in the second field of cars. Unfortunately, an off-pace 8.67/182.18 lost to Bob Smith's 7.82/173 in the first round.
