Notes: In the first week of May, John raced at the NHRA Division Six opener at Seattle. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.54/210.77 qualified #4. An easy 7.02/168.53 beat Bill Spevacek in round one, and in round two, his 6.70/173.07 defeated Richard Rogers. In the semi-final, John's 6.60/196.07 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.48/225. The following week, he was in Portland for the Oregon Open. His 6.54 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.49/202.70 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Bob Pickett's 6.26/225 in the M/T Grand Am. Shortly after that, he was at Fremont for a ten-car show. All cars ran two races, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. His car broke a magneto in his first race, and McCulloch soloed with a 6.48. In his second race, Collins ran 6.64/197.80 to beat Gary Burgin, who shut off to 7.49/125. Unfortunately, his times were not good enough to advance to the final. John was at Sacramento in June for the second NHRA Division Seven race. He lasted until the final before his late 6.94/191.49 finished runner-up to Jake Johnston's 7.09/134 in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Monza. Collins competed at the World Series of Drag Racing event held at Cordova in August. It was a two-day race, and on Friday, he shut down against Don Prudhomme in the first round. He also had problems in the first round on Saturday, where his 9.44 lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.63/221. Collins ran one of his better times of the year in the second round, where his 6.36/221.61 defeated Ron Colson's 6.60/218 in the "Hawaiian." All cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Despite John's great run, his time did not advance to the final. John was the 4th alternate at his only NHRA national event, the World Finals (times not reported). | This one debuted as the McEwen team car in '76 after retiring the old '72 car Collins ran at Puyallup earlier that year (WOT burnouts.) He raced at the 64 funny car event in Seattle. - Joe Moore

Notes: John was at Tucson Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. The track was slick, and he qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.77. He improved to 6.60/204.78 in the first round, to beat Jim Liberman's 6.82. Another 6.60 in the second round beat Rick Johnson while a semifinal 6.61 advanced when Raymond Beadle broke a rear end in the "Blue Max." In the final, he faced Tom Hoover, and Collins ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.58/221.12, to take the victory. John qualified #5 at the NHRA Winternationals at 6.293/231.36 and then won a round one matchup with John Lombardo, 6.250/228.42 to 6.80/138. He lost to Don Prudhomme in round two, 6.14/203 to John's 12-second shut-off pass. He didn't race another NHRA national event until Indy, where his 6.281/225.56 was the third alternate. That was John's last NHRA national event of the year. | Second quickest at SIR '77 64 FCs at 6.38, after John Lombardo's meet's quickest 6.24. They met in the final, where people (me included) climbed over the fence into the grass, and some blind drunk stepped into Lombardo's beams for an instant red light, giving Collins the win. - Joe Moore

Notes: John bought the car and ran it on his own with Pioneer. He was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 with a 6.75. A first-round 6.79/193 beat Wayne Stoeckel, and in round two, a 6.90/216 beat Dave Hough. But in the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, John qualified #14 at 6.400/225.56. He lost to Denny Savage's 6.39/214 in the first round, with a 6.55/217.91. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. His 6.46 qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field, and a first-round 6.42 beat Les Cassidy's 7.33. Collins slowed to 6.60/182.18 in round two, but it was enough to beat Bryan Raines' 7.19/204. He slowed even more in the semifinals when he smoked the tires hard coming off the line, and his 7.75/134.00 lost to the eventual winner Tripp Shumake's 6.36/231. John was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show, but Billy Meyer had, but his car broke, so Collons took his place in the show. However, it didn't do a lot of good as in the opening round, his 6.37/196.70 lost to John Lombardo's 6.18/224. At the end of April, he competed in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.56/229.00 qualified #7. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.90/175.43 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.56/225. His next stop was at Tulsa on May 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. The track was poor, so his 6.82/211.76 actually qualified #3. But he fell off to 7.44/187.10 in a first-round loss to Billy Graham's 7.04/205. Early in June, Collins was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.74/215.83. He improved to 6.65/197.81 in the first round, to beat Dale Tuter, and in the semifinals, he took a big win when his 6.55 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.62 in the "Blue Max."He faced low qualifier Tom McEwen in the final, and this day proved to be Collins as his 6.46 easily took the victory over the "Goose's" 6.67. He was having so much fun on the AHRA tour that he was back at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio on June 18 for the AHRA Nationals. He didn't do as well there as he had at St. Louis. He qualified #5 with a 6.43/202, which set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Gene Snow. Unfortunately, the race was no contest as John got crossed up and shut down to 7.75/136, which Gene ran 6.44/195 to advance. John was the fifth alternate at NHRA Englishtown with a 6.42 (no speed reported). John qualified #5 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals in August with a 6.43/212.50. But in the opening round of eliminations, he got out of shape against low qualifier Billy Graham and shut off. He was the third alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.263/220.58. But he was the #2 qualifier at 6.134/220.58 at NHRA Ontario. He beat Kenny Bernstein in round one, with a consistent 6.138/221.67 to a shutoff. In round two, he broke on the burnout, sending Denny Savage on to the next round. John did not hit 230 mph in NHRA competition this year. Did he run 234.56 somewhere else?

Notes: John started the season at the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.94/197. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gordie Bonin. He lost that race when his 6.77/216 fell to Bonin's 6.65/219. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 6.21/234.37 but his 6.43/194.38 lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 6.15/238 in the first round. He barely made the show at the Gatornationals, qualifying #16 with a 6.143/241.28. The car went into a wheelstand in the first round, and he shut off, losing to Dale Pulde. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. This was only an eight-car field, and his 6.64 best was well off the 6.16 "bump." The following weekend (May 3), he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified #3. He failed to reach the finals. John went to St. Louis early in June for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4 and then ran 6.56/210.76 in the opening round to beat Larry Gould's quicker but later 6.51/221. He improved by two tenths in the semifinal to a 6.36, but that wasn't enough to beat Don Prudhomme's 6.26. Columbus was his next stop for the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #10 with a 6.23/226.70. He upset Prudhomme in the first round, where Collins' 6.20/239.36 beat the "Snake's" 6.56/175. In round two, he continued to impress, where his 6.31/215 easily defeated Fuzz Miller's 6.61/192. A 6.34/232.55 fell to eventual winner Craig Epperly's 6.29/210 in the semifinal. His best NHRA national event ET was a 6.127 at Englishtown. The Gainesville speed was his fastest number. Where did John run 6.01?

Notes: Collins did not run in 1982. Collins' Pioneer Sponsorship ended late '81; he sat out '82, returned in '83 with Camaro & JVC. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. | Qualified second at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.88, but lost to Bryan Raines in the first round. A 6.445/222.22 failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals, and an improving 6.09 still was unable to make the cut at the Gatornationals. He also failed to qualify for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, running only a best of 6.35/209.78. A 6.81 qualified fifth at the AHRA Springnationals at Tulsa on May 2, but he met low qualifier (6.29), Don Prudhomme, in the first round, and his 6.63/198.23 fell to Don's 6.36/235.60. On the NHRA side of things, a 6.17/232.55 was good for second alternate at the Springnationals in June. At the AHRA Gateway Nationals, John qualified sixth with a 6.31/220.59, but he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen's 6.11/227.28 in the first round. Another 6.17 at the NHRA Summernationals on July 17 again made him a non-qualifier. He followed that up with another non-qualifying attempt at the Mile High Nationals on July 30, where his 6.29/227.27 failed to make the show. A 5.97/241.28 did make the show in the sixteenth spot at the NHRA US Nationals, but he lost to Tom Anderson in the first round. He qualified fifth at the AHRA World Finals at Spokane, but fell in the first round, to a hard-charging John Force, who ran 5.79/253.52 to beat Collins' 6.17/216.34. He ended the year on a high note by qualifying #1 with a 5.91 at OCIR's final drag race on October 29, but he failed to make it into the finals.

Notes: At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at Firebird Raceway, John qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.87/245.23. That was the quickest time he ran that day on his way to winning. A first-round 8.76 advanced when John Martin crossed the centerline and, in the semifinals, an even slower 9.13 got the win when Don Prudhomme also crossed the centerline. In the final, he faced Kenny Bernstein, and after Kenny did his burnout, his reverser failed, giving Collins a solo for the win. John ran 6.66/149.50 to claim his first title of the new year. Collins started his NHRA season at Pomona for the Winternationals. He ran a 5.85/248.48 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." Collins smoked the tires and lost to Lombardo's 5.66/254. He attempted to qualify for an eight-car show in Atlanta on March 10 but was the first alternate. At the Gatornationals, a 5.89/249.03 qualified #15, and in the first round, he picked up to a 5.76/246.71 to beat Jody Smart. In round two, he ran a 5.74/256.11 to beat a tire-smoking Prudhomme. But in the semifinals, Collins had to shut off to a 10.15 due to severe tire shake. He lost to Bernstein. In April at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, John qualified #14 with a 5.99/243.11. He beat Al Segrini in the first round with a 6.02/238.47 before losing to Ed McCulloch in round two. He qualified #15 at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals with a 6.01/243.50. John beat Tom McEwen in the first round with a 5.95/231.60 before losing to Ron Correnti's 5.96/242 with a 6.06/221.45 in round two. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #8 with a 5.83/244. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 5.79/246 before losing to eventual winner Dale Pulde in round two. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. John's 5.97/244.29 qualified #12. A first-round 5.93/241 beat Rick Johnson's quicker 5.90/249, and in the second round, another holeshot 5.98/240.51 beat McEwen's 5.91/245. But in the semifinals, his 5.94/244.96 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.82/241. A week later (June 23), he was at Brainerd for the Crown Auto US Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, Collins' 5.82/240.32 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.82/237 in a close one. Later in a consolation race, John returned and ran another 5.82 at 252.80 to beat Lombardo's 6.08/218. John made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.86/252.38. Both he and McEwen ran 5.86 (Collins at 246.84) in round one, but McEwen got the win light. John set Low ET and Top Speed at NHRA Brainerd at 5.712/257.14 to qualify #1. He finished as a runner-up to John Force at that event. Those were his best times of the year. John went on to win the NHRA Fallnationals at Phoenix.

Notes: Ron took over the driving chores of this car in July. His first outing with the car was at the Rockford Manufacturer's meet run on July 23. Colson did not set the world on fire there as he was getting used to his new ride. | At the 1972 OCIR Manufacturers Meet, Ron's 6.57/218.97 earned him a spot in the final against eighteen-year-old Billy Meyer (6.51/218.97). In that final, which pitted the two lowest ET cars, he lost a tire-smoking race when his 7.82/194.38 was beaten by Billy's 7.37/183.67. Third alternate at the NHRA Supernationals in Ontario at 6.564/215.31.

Notes: Everyone loved the "Chi-Town Hustler." It had a mystique about it. The team didn't race at many major events as they did quite well on the match race trail. That being said, they could hold their own against any nationally touring pro quite easily. Seeing the team at a national event was kind of like seeing a movie star without their make-up. Ron Colson drove the car in '73, and if you had the "Hustler" at your track, you were sure to draw a crowd. In January, Colson started the '73 season with a win at the Miami-Hollywood Funny Car Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and Ron qualified #3 with a 6.78. He ran 6.66, a track record 6.64, and a 6.67 to reach the finals, where he met Al Marshall in the "Tyrant" Mustang. A final round 6.69/218.44 got the victory over Al's 6.95/189. Colson competed at the eight-car show for the Spring Drag Race at Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway. His 7.33 defeated Al Hanna's 7.48 in the "Eastern Raider in the first round." But in the semifinals, Wayne Mahaffey set Low ET with a 6.90 in the "Alabamian" to beat Ron's 7.12. Shortly after that, he was back in Miami for the Winter Funny Car Championships. This was another eight-car show, and in the opening round, Colson's 6.80/209.79 beat Shirl Greer's 6.98/207. A semifinal 6.70/213.77 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.71/211 in the "Blue Max." The team showed up at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals, where Ron qualified #4 with a 7.00. In round one, he ran 6.98/206.89 to beat Dave Condit's 7.11/200 in the "LA Hooker." Colson lost in the second round. On March 16/18, the team made a rare NHRA National event appearance at the Gatornationals. A strong 6.461/226.13 qualified #2, and a first-round 6.48 beat Paul Radici. In round two, the Charger slowed to a 6.70 that lost to Al Bergler's 6.57. Ron was in Connecticut in April for a four-car show. He ran Low ET at 6.61/218. A best of three match race against Tom Hoover was run at Minnesota, and Colson won three, straight setting a new track record 6.54. His best speed was 222. On April 28, the "Chi-Town Hustler" was at Capitol, and while Colson didn't reach the finals, he was one of four cars there that ran 6.5s. He ran 6.52/221 in beating "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.69/200 in one of his races. The next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Colson qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.62. In the first round, he was up against Tharp, who had only run 7.63 in qualifying. In their race, Ron improved to a 6.58/221.13, but Tharp improved even more, running a 6.33/211 to put Colson on the trailer. Colson did really well at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the first round, his 6.62 defeated Clare Sanders in the "Ramchargers" car. In round two, he beat Greer. He got a solo in the semifinal when Hanna lost oil pressure. In the final, he faced Bill Leavitt. The "Chi-Town" lost a supercharger, and Leavitt ran 6.71/207 for the win. Colson did get Top Speed honors at 221.67. Shortly after that, he was in New England for its fourth Funny Car Tourney race. Unfortunately, breakage killed Colson's chances when the car failed to fire for its first-round race with Dale Pulde. Breakage continued to plague the team at York US 30, where they were to run the "Blue Max" in a best of three match. Tharp won their first race when Colson broke a crankshaft. Ron was done for the day, and Tharp ran two solo passes for the match race win. July started right for the team, with Colson winning over an eight-car field at Edgewater's Funny Car Invitational. Shirley Muldowney fell to Ron's 6.85/212.76 in round one, and in the semifinals, his 6.83 advanced as Sanders broke a fuel pump. His final-round opponent was Low ET setter (6.56) Russell Long in the "Pabst" Charger. The two had a good race that saw Colson's 6.77/215.82 (Top Speed) victorious over Long's 6.89/206. The "Chi-Town Huster" was also at Rockford near the end of the month for its Manufacturer's Meet. Things didn't go so well as Colson lost to both Pat Foster driving the "Barry Setzer" Vega and Leavitt. In August, Colson was one of several cars that failed to qualify at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. The team returned to Edgewater for its Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships. Ron smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to Foster. Colson won the Dixie Nationals held at Blaney Drag Strip in October. He beat Liberman's 6.88 in the final with track record times of 6.65/218.44. The team also returned to Lakeland on October 14 for the IHRA Nationals. It was supposed to be a sixteen-car show, but the field was too short. Colson qualified #6 and a 6.86/209.79 beat Foster's 6.94/174 in round one. Unfortunately, Colson lost in the next round. Gainesville was the team's only NHRA national event in 1973.

Notes: Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. | This team spent most of its time on the match race trail. They figured there was not a lot of money to be made at NHRA events and preferred booked in shows. Colson really ran well at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.62/214.79. During eliminations, he set Low ET at 6.50 and in the final, beat Raymond Beadle who was driving for Don Schumacher. The final wasn't pretty as his 7.28/226.70 (Top Speed) beat Beadle's equally troubled 7.38/220 for the victory. The team was at Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals where 35 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Ron’s 6.57 qualified #5 and he improved to 6.51/222.77 in the first round, to beat Beadle's 6.78/193. But in round two, eventual winner Billy Meyer ran 6.37/218 to beat Colson's 6.53/218.97. Colson got some revenge on Meyer at the next IHRA event, the Northern Nationals held at Mid-America Dragway on June 30. There, he stopped Billy in the final although Meyer sort of handed the win to the "Chi-Town" bunch when he had to shut off on the line when his headers fell off. Colson ran 7.31/216.86 for the win after earlier posting Top Speed at 222.58. The "Chi-Town Hustler" team always made a point in running at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. The race was run with all cars running the first-round and the eight lowest ETs advancing into round two. In the qualifying round, Colson ran 6.63/217.39. This was enough to advance into the second round where both he and "Jungle Jim" Liberman got out of shape. Ron’s 7.26/189.87 beat Jim's 7.81/197. The semifinals saw Colson run 6.49/211.26 to stop Jim Nicoll at 6.90/154. This moved him into the final against Don Prudhomme. Don was running really well with times of 6.52, 6.30, and 6.35 to reach the final. Colson's crew chief, Austin Coil, must have added some clutch for the final as the Charger went into a huge wheelstand that crashed down hard, busting their oil pan. Prudhomme was long gone with a 6.49 for the victory. Ron also ran well at the IHRA US Open. He qualified #8 and made his way to the semifinals, where a motor blowing 6.56 beat Denny Savage's 6.85 in the "Hawaiian.” Unfortunately, the team was unable to repair in time and Savage was reinstated for the final. Colson also had problems at the IHRA All-American race at Bristol. He qualified for the show, but broke a set of titanium pistons. Alternate Larry Gould took their place in the field.

Notes: The "Hawaiian" qualified #9 at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, which meant that Colson had to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the opening round. Don's 6.23 put Ron's 6.32 on the trailer. The team was really running well at Sacramento for the Governor's Cup Championships. Colson ran a 6.16 on his way to a final-round meeting with Gordie Bonin. In the final, he improved to 6.14/226 to win over Bonin's 6.20. In Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, Ron's 6.18/225.56 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme. An opening round 6.24 beat Bonin, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.66 in a loss to Ed McCulloch. The best NHRA national event times were the 6.184 at Ontario and 230.17 at Seattle (plus a nice 6.191 at Indy). South Chicago Auto Parts sponsored.

Notes: Ron qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 6.20. In lost to Gordie Bonin's new Firebird in the second round. He won the Sacramento race of Champions. He qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but his opening round 6.46 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.35. Early in June, Ron was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified third in the eight-car field with a 6.48/222.77. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and was unable to make his first-round race against Rob Bruins in the "Green Elephant.” Not long after that, the "Hawaiian" was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Colson won his first-round race, but once again he hurts some parts and was unable to make his second round race against Don Prudhomme. The following week (June 18), Colson was at Martin, Michigan’s Funny Car Opener. He made it into the final where his 6.22 finished runner-up to Prudhomme's 6.13. The following day, he was at Byron for the Manufacturer's race. The "Snake" got him again, this time in round two where Ron's 6.42/222 fell to Prudhomme's 6.30/233. He was back at Martin, Michigan, in July for the third NHRA Division 3 race. He reached the final against Billy Meyer only to lose a 6.22/219 to 6.34/218.44 race. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.180 qualified #5. But in the first round, he lost in a tire-smoking battle against McCulloch. His 6.82 lost to the "Ace's" 6.75. Ron and Tommy Ivo were at Edgewater for a best of three match race in August. Each had won one race each and Colson had lowered the track record to 6.31, but the third race between the two was never run. The "Hawaiian" always seemed to run well at the PHR Championships at Martin. In '77, the team did alright. In the qualifying round, Ron’s 6.40 beat Burgin's 6.44 and in the next round, Ron’s 6.52 fell to Dale Pulde's 6.20. He also ran 6.22 at Indy 9/77. Best NHRA national event ET was the 6.180 at Englishtown and 233.16 at the Ontario World Finals.

Notes: Colson qualified #2 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a career-best 6.00/240.64. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. At the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle, a 6.14/234.98 qualified #5, but he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Nick Harmon. His season ended on a high note when he won the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. He had announced his retirement shortly before the race and then went out and qualified #1 with a 6.11/238.09 (Top Speed). He beat Dale Armstrong in the first round. In round two, his 6.21 beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.30, while a 6.41/231.36 advanced in the semifinals when Roy Harris crossed the center line. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle was running well, setting Low ET at 6.06. But in the final, he had trouble and shut off, giving Colson's 6.28/230.17 the victory. Ron did well in the NHRA points standings, finishing third for the season.

Notes: The "Hawaiian" team showed up with the new Omni at Pomona. Colson qualified #11 with a 6.15/239.99. His 6.29/233.16 advanced when Raymond Beadle went into a wheelstand in the "Blue Max" and shut off in the first round. In round two, he beat Tom Hoover and, in the semifinals, a 6.34 beat Kosty Ivanof's out-of-shape 7.21. In the final, he faced Dale Pulde. Colson got out of shape and crossed the centerline, giving Pulde the victory. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Ron qualified #10. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.36/210.77 when the second qualifier Tripp Shumake had his steering go out. He got out of shape in round two and shut off against Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's Arrow. Ron was at the Seattle Opener in April. The race featured an eight-car fuel Funny Car show, and Colson won the event. In the final, he beat Tom McEwen with a 6.15/238.09; his final round numbers were good for Low ET and Top Speed. On April 27, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Ron qualified the "Hawaiian" #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.09/242.58. A 6.13/242 beat Dale Armstrong in the first round, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Paul Smith in Larry Coogle's "Sting." He was runner-up to Don Prudhomme at the Olympics of Drag Racing race at Union Grove. At the NHRA Springnationals, Colson qualified #1 with a 6.12/239.36 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, Prudhomme had a lousy time in qualifying and only qualified ninth, setting up a first-round meeting between the two. The "Snake" picked up to a 6.08/222 to get the win over the "Hawaiian's" 6.20/237.46. A the NHRA Summernationals, Ron qualified with a 6.085. That was his best time until the Indy 6.000 in the new Corvette. Did the team run 6.032 somewhere this year? (It was not run in either the Omni or the Corvette at an NHRA national event).

Notes: This was the Beaver brothers' second Funny Car. The car was built by S&R Race Cars (Steve Plueger & Richard Conklin), and the wheelbase was 118 inches. Riveren Plastics made the Maverick body. The engine was a stock-sized 426 Hemi from Keith Black. A stock stroke Reath crank, M/T rods, and Forgedtrue pistons were used. Engle supplied the cam. Reath also did the cylinder heads. Cragar was used for the blower drive, and manifold and Don Hampton prepared the blower. An Enderle injection unit sat up top. The transmission was a Lenco two-speed, and the rear was a Ford with 4.30 gears. Kenny Youngblood did the lettering, and Don Kirby applied the enamel paint. The car cost $12,500 to build, and its best early run was 6.84/217. Was that the OCIR 216.86 from March? | Dave qualified at the first OCIR All-Pro race in Jan but broke and was not able to run in eliminations. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals on February 7, a 7.23/205.47 qualified #13. He lost to Larry Reyes in the first round. He was at Beeline on February 21 for the AHRA Winternationals. A 7.39 qualified for the show, but once again, he lost in the first round to Gordon Mineo. Condit ran well at Famoso on March 8 for the Bakersfield March Meet. He beat Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto in the first round, and in round two, a 7.13 beat Butch Maas in the "Hawaiian." Another 7.13 in the semifinal beat low qualifier Rich Siroonian's 7.20 in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. In the final, his 7.17/204.08 finished runner up to Jim Dunn's 6.99/212. OCIR held an eight-car show in March, and Dave qualified #1 with a 6.98. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round when he beat Pulde's 7.20/206 with a strong 6.87/216.86. Unfortunately, the Maverick broke in the semifinal giving eventual winner Gene Conway a solo into the final. On March 20, Lions held an eight-car show. Dave got out of shape in the first round and shut off to an 8.45 loss to Randy Walls' 7.04. The last OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 27 and featured a sixteen-car Funny Car field. Dave ran 6.99/213.77 to beat Cliff Zinc's 7.43 in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in the first round, but in the second round, he lost fire on the line against Gene Snow. On April 11, at Seattle for the Northwest National Open, he got a runner-up finish to Don Prudhomme's on fire, up on two wheels run of 6.94. While everyone was watching the "Snake's" amazing run, Dave's runner-up effort of 6.98/215.30 wasn't bad. Early in May, he was at Wichita, where he won a best of three match race over Mart Higginbotham.

But despite running another 6.53 at 217.91 in round three, he lost to Richard Tharp's 6.50/218 in the "Blue Max."The team failed to qualify at Pomona, but it wasn't for lack of power. The track was horrible, and a high seven-second time could get you a spot in the show. Dave qualified on the bump in Gainesville with a 6.607/215.34. He beat Harlan Thompson in round one, 6.789/187.89, when Harlan lost fire. He lost to eventual winner Pat Foster in round two, 6.36/223 to a 10-second shutoff. Dave was at Beech Bend in June for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. He ran 6.78/197.80 in the qualifying round, and in the semifinal, his 6.96/206.89 beat Ron O'Donnell. He faced David Ray, driving Mike Burkhart's Vega in the final. Condit had problems and shut down to 8.28/106.37, while Ray picked up the victory with a 6.83/208.
