Notes: Donovan-powered FC's were few and far between by '78. The Cassidy brothers did their best to stay competitive. Cassidy started his season at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Championships. He qualified #15, and in round one, his 7.33 lost to John Collins' 6.42. He then went to Green Valley Raceway's Funny Car opener. There was an opening-round 6.62 lost to Tom Prock's 6.27. The next stop for him was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and the track wasn't great, so his 7.50/205 held up for the #5 spot in the show. He improved by almost a half-second to a 7.06/184 in the first round, but it wasn't good enough as the eventual winner Dale Pulde, beat him with a 6.49/224. Les took a big win over an eight-car field at Suffolk in April. His final-round opponent, Dodger Glenn, crossed the centerline in the final, giving Les the win. He ran a pro-stock like 9.07 at 91mph to qualify #14 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Larry Fullerton failed to fire for his race against him in the opening round of eliminations, and Cassidy ran a solo 7.24/145 to advance. In round two, he slipped and slid to a 9.32/95 loss to Denny Savage's 6.49/216. On July 2, Les was at Empire Dragway in New York for the NED Gold Cup Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.77/189.48 in the opening round lost to Tom Prock's 6.44/213. A couple of days later (July 5), he was at Englishtown for its Funny Car Spectacular race. Twelve cars were competing, and all were to run two rounds of racing, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race, Les's 6.69/173.09 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.17/218. In the second race, he beat Jim Adolph with a 6.63. His ET was not good enough to advance into the final. On July 22, Cassidy went to Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division One race. He didn't stick around long as his crossed-up 7.59/131.19 lost to Bruce Larson's 6.70/208 in the opening round. $600 junk Monza body on venerable S&W chassis. AKA Sundance Kid.

Notes: Les was at Englishtown for its FC opener in late March. In the opening round, his 6.83/201.34 lost to eventual winner Gary Burgin's 6.31/231. Shortly after that (April 1st), he was at DeSoto for the NHRA Division Two opener. Only five cars showed, and in round one, his 6.72/206.42 beat R.C.Sherman. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals and puttered to a 12.48 to advance. He was to face Shirl Greer in the final, but his Corvette lost fire, and he had to watch as Greer soloed for the win. He was at Englishtown for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. All ten cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars advancing into the final. In his first race, his 6.71/199.55 lost to Pete Williams' 6.60/218 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and in the second race, a 6.88/198.23 fell to Jake Crimmins' 6.59/207. He was at Richmond Dragway for the fourth NHRA Division Two race, but after qualifying, he could not make his first-round race against Junior Rice. Division 2 NHRA Funny Car champ in 1979. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 7.59/194.38 when Larry Arnold blew a transmission. In the final, he set both ends of the track record while winning the event with a 7.52/196.92 that beat Bruce Larson's 7.59/194. On May 31 at Connecticut, he won the event at 7.36/200.00 over Lew Arrington's off pace 9.04/105. - Ron Howard | Best NHRA times were 7.307/198.23.

Notes: Phil was at Miami-Hollywood in March for its Winter Championships. An 8.24/166.35 advanced in round one, while in the second round, he set both ends of the track record with a 6.97/211.26 over Mike Burkhart who broke. In the semifinals, he got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 7.03/194.80. He faced Curtis Wasson's Chevy-powered Camaro in the final. Wasson's best in eliminations had been 7.59, but in the final, the Charger broke and slowed to 9.78/73.95 while Curtis got the victory with an 8.77/186. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the car was extensively damaged when the throttle stuck and Phil intentionally drove the car into the guardrail. He qualified #7 with a 7.05 and ran a best of 6.93 in eliminations before the crash in the semifinals. With the repaired and repainted car, he went to Maple Grove in May for an eight-car show. A 7.28/193.54 beat Pete Hill's 7.80/195 in the first round, but he broke against Bob Cain in the semifinals. He made the finals at the inaugural NHRA Grandnationals. During that final race against Sam Miller, Phil had a two-car length lead when he lost traction and skidded on the grease-sweep that was still in his lane after the cleanup of a Ray Motes blown engine during the Top Gas final. After losing the race in the manner that he did Phil was understandably upset at NHRA for what he thought was an insufficient effort in cleaning the track. He said "Another ten minutes of sweeping would have made all the difference. I don't plan to run any more NHRA events ever - I could have killed myself." That off the cuff remark cost him entry into the years biggest race, the NHRA Nationals at IRP over Labor Day weekend. The NHRA pulled out and rejected his previously approved entry for Indy. Cooler heads prevailed later in the year, and he was allowed to enter the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo. In that race, he used consistent low to mid-7-second ETs and opponents' breakage to become the NHRA World Champion. His 7.15 at 210.28 was good enough in the final to beat a broken Jake Johnson. Ironic that the man that said he would never run another NHRA event became world champion. And the association that denied him entry into their biggest race now had to honor him. Phil ran the Charger until November when a new Woody Gilmore built Challenger made its debut.

Notes: Won OCIR match race in 1977. Note comp number 100. According to WDIFL, Phil used BOTH #100 and #115 during his driving career. | Phil opened the year at the PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. He ran 6.91/166.35 there. He qualified #14 at the Winternationals at 6.411/224.43 and lost round one to Gary Burgin despite an improved 6.355/223.88. Phil qualified #7 at Gainesville with a 6.42/227.27, but Al Bergler surprised him with a holeshot in round one, 6.63/210.28 to 6.57/227.27. Phil was at Maple Grove in March for its All-Pro series race. He didn't reach the finals, but he did run a strong 6.42. Another 6.42 did not make the cut at Columbus, leaving Phil as fourth alternate. By Englishtown, Al Segrini had taken over the seat of Phil’s Custom Body entry.

Notes: Nickname: "The Professor." Added Blower, Sponsor. Early in June, Chadwick was one of four cars running in a match race at LaPlace. He ran a personal best (to this point) of 7.89 to beat a fouling Leonard Hughes at 8.06. In his second race, he shut down early to an 8.78 that lost to Tom Smallwood's 8.13 in the "Kingfish." The third race saw Chadwick doing battle with Della Woods' new Charger. The Camaro took the win with an 8.30/181.80. Kelly was at Amarillo on June 23 for a best-of-three-match race against Gene Snow. He was having transmission problems and lost two straight. Snow's transmission gave out in the third race, and Chadwick won with an 8.36/189.46. The following week (June 28), he was at Detroit for the Midwest Super Stock Funny Car Championships. A 7.98/182.92 advanced past the first-round when Don Schumacher lost fire, and in round two, an 8.04/169.81 beat Hank Garcia's 8.44/159 in the "Car Shop" Camaro. In the semifinals, he fouled against eventual winner Fred Goeske. On July 4, he was in Oklahoma City for an eight-car show. His 8.01/183.28 beat the "Site Brothers" 'Cuda in the opening round of eliminations. In the semifinals, his 7.93/191.80 beat Leonard Hughes' 8.08/190. It was an all-Chevy final as he faced Mike Burkhart's similar Camaro in the final. Chadwick got the victory, running Low ET with his 7.81/191.14 getting the best of Mike's 7.98/190. He raced Paul Stefansky in a best of three match at Houston in July. Kelly won all three races when Paul's car developed transmission problems. Chadwick's times were 8.13/185.18 in the first and only race, and he ran two solo passes of 8.45/181.80 and 8.44/185 to sew up the match. Hr ran a confirmed 7.79 at Detroit and 7.93/188.28 at Bristol 9/20/68. His '68 record had him race 68 times, and he won approximately 75% of his races.

Notes: Nickname: "The Professor." Chadwick is well-known in two different fields. In Texas, as a girls’ basketball coach and nationwide as a premier drag racer. Don Hardy built all of Kelly Chadwick's cars, including the pictured Camaro. The beautiful 1969 Camaro was his third funny car and his first with a flip top and tube chassis. Chadwick had raced the "Wild Thing" Chevy II and the "Wild Thing II" Camaro, mainly in the Southwest. The Camaro was the first car he took on a national tour. Chadwick joined the original Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars and was said to be the champion in 1969. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info provided by James Ibusuki) - BS | Did he run 7.22/209 in 69/70? | Kelly Chadwick had Don Hardy built him a new Camaro for '69. The car used a 427 Chevy. Mondello did the heads, and Don Hardy prepared the blower. A Hilborn four-port injector unit fed the 60% nitro mixture. Howards supplied the cam. A TorqueFlite transmission transferred the power back to a Pontiac rear with 3.90 gears. | Chadwick started the season by qualifying eleventh with an 8.298/187.89 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Clare Sanders' 8.09 beat his 8.53/161.57 in the first round. On April 27 at Amarillo, Texas, he won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race beating Fred Goeske in the final with track records of 7.82/192.70. Kelly beat Jack Chrisman with an 8.18 in the first round, and he the semifinal, he fouled against Norm Weekly, but Mr. Norm's Charger had engine trouble and couldn't repair for the final, so Chadwick was reinstated. In May, he was at Capitol for the "Mr. Chevrolet" Invitational. He beat Dick Harrell in the first round, with a 7.68/193.96, but in the second round, the Camaro got sideways while racing Malcolm Durham, and he shut down to an 8.96/179.64 loss. Epping held a Cavalcade race on June 15. Kelly lost his first race to Gary Dyer's 7.76/186. He did win his second race with a 7.71/188.28 over a fouling Jess Tyree (7.90/177). In the final, Dyer ran a track-record 7.55 over Kelly's 7.97/164.50 runner-up effort. Later in June, he did win at the Maple Grove Cavalcade race, where he beat Dyer in the final for the win. On July 3, Chadwick picked up another Coca-Cola Cavalcade win at US 30, Gary, Indiana. It was his third Cavalcade win in a row. He beat Ken Safford in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang in the first round, with a 7.68/196, and in the second round, he beat Jess Tyree's Firebird with a 7.71/199. In the final, he beat Marv Eldridge's 7.98/188 with a 7.66/200. Another Coca-Cola Cavalcade race was run at National Trail on August 17, where Chadwick broke a driveshaft in his first race and watched Dick Bourgeois single to an 8.17 win. In his second race, against Marv Eldridge, he won with a 7.79 when Marv broke. In his third race, an 8.78 beat Chrisman's ailing Mustang at 9.40. Dyer won the race in the Mr. Norm car. At Indy for the US Nationals, a 7.543/195.22 qualified Chadwick sixteenth. But in the first round, he stepped it up to a 7.383/196.93 to beat Bobby Wood’s 7.55/199. In round two, Danny Ongais' 7.38 put him on the trailer. On September 20 at Dallas International, he competed in an eight-car show. A first-round 7.52 beat Fritz Callier's 7.69. But a 7.29/204 from Gene Snow in the semifinal dropped his 7.48/194.38. Another win came his way on October 18 at Lions for its Cavalcade race. He ran a 7.53/177.86 over Tyree in the first round, and a second-round 7.47/190.67 beat Eldridge's 7.76/181. In the final, Bob Smith in the Invader fouled away a Low ET of the meet 7.26/193.13, letting Chadwick cruise to an 8.06/138.46 win. At the Lions fifth annual East/West Championships on October 25, he lost to Jim Liberman's 8.06/175 in the first round, with an ailing 10.00. He competed at the Sears Point North/South Championships on November 2 but lost to Lew Arrington's 7.89/194 before the finals. He managed to qualify third for the GM team with a 7.71 for the OCIR Manufacturer's meet on November 7. The following day, a much better 7.47/196.06 beat Rusty Delling's 7.63/191 in his first race. A series of wheelstands did in any chance of winning against Larry Reyes' 7.40/202 in his second race. And a 7.85 in his third race beat a quicker Tony Weathers' 7.75. A Coke circuit ad cited best times of 7.51/195.83 at the time. - Ron Howard

Notes: This car was destroyed in a top-end collision with Connie Kalitta's Bounty Hunter at Union Grove, Wis. This was Chadwick's last funny. He quickly transitioned into a Pro Stock Vega. - RT | Ran 6.64 at Dallas. Time had run out for the Chevy-powered Funny Car's by '73. Every once in a while, one might run a 6.7, but while they were doing that there were six Hemi powered cars running 6.40s. Chadwick was loyal to the end of his Funny Car career. This was his last funny car. Like all the others before, it was built by Don Hardy. The car featured a 118" wheelbase The Vega body came from J&E Fiberglass. The "Rat" motor now displaced almost 500 cubes thanks to a Delta Machine Crank and a .062 overbore. Venolia pistons sat on Howards rods and Howards also supplied the cam. A Cragar manifold held a 35% overdriven Larry Bowers blower. A Hilborn injection unit sat on top. A Lenco two-speed transmission fed the power to a Dana rear end. You couldn't help, but root for him as he was almost all alone in a Chrysler dominated class.

Notes: Chrisman started the year at Lions for the AHRA Funny Car meet on January 28. It didn't go too well. He qualified 31 with a 9.90/154.90 and lost a motor on the line in round one. He ran 8.40 to qualify 13th on February 24, again at Lions, and ran 8.09/180.00 to win his first-round race. An 8.11/176 failed to beat Fred Goeske in the second round. The following day at Carlsbad, he had injection problems and couldn't run, giving Dick Loehr a single. Chrisman was at Lions on March 30, where all fourteen cars made three runs. His 9.14/145.11 lost to Bob Pickett's 9.10/109 when both cars got out of shape in his first race. Motor trouble kept him from making a second run, and on the third, his ailing Comet lost to Johnny Wright's 8.41/160. After doing a stint with Hayden Proffitt's Rebel, Amos Satterlee came back as the chief mechanic. On April 7, Jack ran a best of 8.06/182.18 and finished runner-up to Fred Goeske at the Carlsbad Funny Car Championships. A first-round loss to Dick Harrell's 8.17 to Chrisman's 8.32 followed on May 4 at OCIR. An 8.02/151.50 qualified him second at Lions on May 18, but the pass cost him as a timing chain broke, and he bent some valves. As a result, he was unable to race. He was at Tulsa on June 9 for a best-of-three-match race against Don Gay. Jack lost the first race to the Pontiac, but he ran a strong 7.64 to win over Gay, who lost a motor in the second race. Gay could not return for the third race, so Jack soloed for the match race victory. At Irwindale on June 22, Jack lost to Dee Keaton in the second round. Jack was at Irwindale on August 17 for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. There were four of each that were to race round-robin. In his first race, he ran 8.13/179.28, but it wasn't strong enough to beat Gary Reed's 7.69/204 in the "Groundshaker."In the second race against Sush Matsubara, the Comet broke at 1/8 track and lost to Sush's 9.47/163. The car could not run the last race, and Willie Borsch filled in for him. A big win at Lions on October 12 followed with his 7.98/177.86 dropping Dale Pulde in the final. He almost pulled it off again on November 16 at Lions, where he qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 7.97/185.44. He then ran two 7.88's at 185.56 and 181.08 to beat Ronnie Runyon twice(Ronnie had gotten back into the show on the "break rule"). That got him into the final against Jim Liberman. Jack had to shut off on the line with a leaking transmission. He also raced at the OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. It was his last season running a Comet.

Notes: Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars racer. Jack Chrisman's new 118" Fletcher-built Mustang was a thing of beauty. The Shedlik built body was painted a light metallic red. The stock bore and stroke 427 SOHC used M/T rods supporting Ansen 6:1 pistons. Crane cams were used. A four-port Hilborn Injector sat on the Don Hampton-built blower. It sat on a stock Ford intake manifold for blower applications. The blower drive came from Delta. Doug's Headers were also used. The transmission was a B&M reworked C-6. A Detroit Locker rear with 3.50 gears put the power to the ground. | The car could win at car shows, but Jack had a rough year at the track. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. On March 22, he again failed to make the field at Lions for an eight-car show. Twenty-two cars attempted to make the show. On April 20, Chrisman faced Fred Goeske at Gary, Indiana, for a best of three match. He had a bad day as he lost three straight. In their first race, Fred's 7.70/173 beat his 8.14/160. Both got quicker in the second race, where Fred's 7.63/193 got the better of Jack's 7.94/181. Both ran their best times in the last race, with Fred's 7.60/197 leading Chrisman's 7.87/188 through the traps. Amarillo, Texas, held a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race on April 27, but Jack failed to make the final round. Another Cavalcade race was held at Epping on June 15, and he lost all three of his races, running a best of only 8.96/139.50. In June, he was at Maple Grove for another Cavalcade race but again failed to make the final. On August 17, for National Trail's Cavalcade event, Jack won his first race with an 8.20 over Marv Eldridge's 8.26. He broke at half-track in the second race but won when Goeske fouled away a 7.97. He lost his third-round race to Kelly Chadwick's 8.78 with an ailing 9.40. On September 7 at Shelby International Raceway for the Memphis Funny Car 500, Chrisman won his first-round race when Roger Lindamood broke. But Lindamood got in with the break rule in effect and was matched against Chrisman again in the second round. This time Roger set a 7.44 track record in beating Jack. The highlight of his season had to be at Indy, where Jack qualified #13 for the US Nationals with a 7.520 and had a Top Speed at 206.42. A first-round 7.663/200 beat Dick Loehr's quicker 7.56/193, but in the second round, his 7.72/196 wasn't enough to beat Leonard Hughes's 7.25/201. On October 18, a Cavalcade race was held at Lions, but in the first round, he ran a blower-popping 8.13/177.51 that lost to Marv Eldridge's 7.84/180. | The Coke circuit ad from 1969 listed Jack's best times at 7.57/193.91.

Notes: Chrisman was one of the Funny Car pioneers. His '64 Comet was the first of its kind (Dodge Chargers aside). The car inspired the Funny Car class more than any other. He was constantly pushing the envelope, going faster and faster. He had stunned the drag racing world in '67 by running 7.60/191.08 at Indy. So it was sad to see this great driver run so poorly in '70. The car was always (and I mean always!) prone to breakage. His times were way off what they had been even two years earlier. Jack Chrisman had been the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars captain in '69. He withdrew from the Coca-Cola tour for '70. On May 9th, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.19/173.41 lost to eventual winner Wendell Shipman who was driving John Mazmanian's car. Jack was at Lions on June 27 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he broke on the line against Dave Beebe in the first round. He also broke on the line in the first round at the OCIR Nitro Championships held on July 3. Eventual winner Arnie Behling advanced when the Mustang broke. The following day he was at Irwindale's Fourth of July race. Chrisman qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 7.88, but once again, the car came up ailing in the first round, and he lost to Dean LaPole's 8.50. He went to Lions on July 11 for the AHRA All-American race. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field, but there were so many FCs on hand that they created a second eight to run against each other. In the first round of this "second eight," Jack's 8.19/145.16 beat Bob McFarland's quicker 8.11/176. But in the semifinals, breakage persisted, and he slowed to 11.79/72.23 in a loss to Eldridge's 8.38/133. The following week (July 17), he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #13 with an 8.75, and his ailing 8.59 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Dave Beebe's 8.02. Jack was back at OCIR on July 25 for the PDA Championships. This was another sixteen-car show, and his 8.19/170.13 advanced when his opponent, Vic Morse, broke. But it was the same old story in round two when the Mustang broke against Dave Condit. Jack raced at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships held on August 1st. In the first round, Chrisman's ailing 8.69/118.42 lost to Dick Poll's 8.26/180. Jack was at Lions on August 22 for an "open" eight-car show. He failed to qualify, but he had a "grudge race" with another non-qualifier, Marv Eldridge. Jack won their race, with his 7.54/185.56 being one of his better runs of the year. Eldridge lost with a 7.70/168. The Fremont Argus Newspaper in June 1970 noted that Jack's car had an overhead cam Ford.

Notes: Chrisman was at OCIR on June 25 for its Nitro Championships. Nine cars attempted to qualify for the four-car field, and his 6.24/225.56 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, his troubled 8.14/100.78 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.14/240. Steve attempted to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, but his 6.451/220.58 (fourth alternate) failed to make the eight-car field. He ran 6.08/222.22 at OCIR on 8/27/83 (video). Steve was a DNQ at the World Finals, but times were unavailable. The 1700 lb. match race machine faced on and off again legality with the NHRA. | Chrisman first ran AA in June '83 with the Plueger Bros. Omni, went 6.25. I didn't know they ran a 417 until I stood next to the car since they ran black valve covers. Stainless steel mag offset for the Mooneyham 12/71. Aug OCIR meet 6.11. Finals: 6.08. - Joe Moore
