Notes: Mike debuted the Camaro at Oklahoma City Raceway in April. He was supposed to run against John Wiebe's Top Fuel car with a one-second handicap, but the cars were only allowed solo passes due to high winds. Burkhart ran a best of 8.37/184.00. Mike was at Green Valley Raceway in June for an eight-car show. He made an easy solo in the first round of the competition when Al Vanderwoude failed to fire, and in the semifinals, his 8.05/166.66 advanced when Charlie Therwhanger fouled. The final was supposed to be between him and Gene Snow, but rain canceled it. He was back at Green Valley on August 7 for an eight-car show. Mike set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, where he ran 7.89/189.92 to beat the "Bear-A-Cuda." But in the semifinal, the Camaro got out of shape, and Burkhart shut off against eventual winner Ronnie Runyan. On September 8, he was at Bristol for the AHRA All-American Funny Car Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 7.86/175 defeated Bob Fulp's 8.36/175 in the "Limefire." He was late off the line in the second round, and his 8.06/180.36 lost to Runyan's 8.25/169. Confirmed 7.86 at 180.36 at 1968 Bristol All American Funny Car Championships and 7.81 Irwindale. Had real doors. Ran as an alternate at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. We need to confirm aspiration, fuel, and class. Edit these fields if necessary when we get confirmation.

Notes: Burkhart's new '69 Camaro built by Don Hardy used a 118" wheelbase chassis. The body came from Fiberglass Ltd. It used a stock displacement 427 Chevy with Mondello heads. He used Howards for the cam as well as the rods and pistons. An Enderle injection unit sat on top of a Larry Bowers-built blower. Claimed hp was 1,200. Mike qualified second with a 7.69 at the AHRA Winternationals, but he lost in the first round to Clare Sanders. On July 19, Burkhart was at St. Louis for its 1/8 Mile Championships. He lasted until round two before his 5.28 lost to eventual winner Arnie Behling's 5.10 in Ed Shartman's Cougar. The following week (July 26), he was in Dallas for an eight-car show. Mike had a close opening round race against Ron Leslie in the "High Country Cougar." The Camaro's 7.80/185.56 nipped the Cougar's 7.84/186. Gene Snow got crossed-up against him in the semifinal and shut off while Burkhart advanced with a 7.69/190.00. He faced Leonard Hughes in the final, and the "Candies and Hughes" car was running about two-tenths better at this race. Sure enough, Hughes ran his slowest time of the race, a 7.67/207, which was more than enough to defeat Burkhart. The next day, he was at Corpus Christi for a best of three march race against Leslie. In the first race, the Cougar's 7.99/181 won. But while doing his burnout for their second race, Leslie broke and could not run after that. Mike ran two solo passes for the match race victory with best times of 8.30/153.84. Mike went to St.Louis on August 10 for AHRA's fourth Grand American race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 7.76/187. In round one, his 7.79 lost to Curtis Wasson's quick-leaving 7.92. But Wasson had burned a piston and could not return for the semifinal. So Burkhart got back into the show on the "break rule." He didn't stick around long as he fouled against Ronnie Runyan. At the AHRA All-American at Bristol, a sixteen-car show was staged during qualifying on September 6. Mike lost a transmission in the first round but repaired it for the actual show the next day. He won his first-round race with a 7.87 that advanced over Clyde Morgan, who lost a trans in his Javelin. Jim Maybeck set Low ET of the meet in the second round with a 7.32 that put Mike's Camaro on the trailer. The following week (September 13), he raced at Nashville's King of the Funnies meet. He went 7.80 in the first round over Ronnie Hunter, and he beat Frank Oglesby's Cougar in the semis. But a final round 7.92 gave him the runner-up spot as Ronnie Runyan's 7.83/183 bested him. It was on to Dallas for an eight-car show on September 20. Mike ran a first-round 7.87 that beat John Dekker's quicker 7.85. He lost fire on the line in the semifinal against Cogo Eads. Mike faced off against Leonard Hughes at Southland Dragway on September 28. The Candies and Hughes car had been turning in some big numbers, so it was a tough race. Hughes had his linkage break in the first race, giving Burkhart a solo 8.44/169.19 for the win. In the second race, his 8.13/172.08 lost to Hughes' 7.56/189. The last race saw Hughes hook up to a 7.46/184 for the match race win over Mike's 8.23/171.76. Also 7.76 low qualifier at 1969 AHRA Grand American at St. Louis. Set a 7.51 Pittsburgh track record. He ran 7.52 at LaPlace.

Notes: For sale ad claimed the car was guaranteed to run 7.40 at 195. Confirmed 7.50 at Tri-City 1970. | After having a great season in '69, Burkhart found the going a lot more tough in '70. The big Chevy "Rat" motors were having a real hard time keeping up with the Chrysler Hemi powered cars. They weren't just off a tenth, they were now almost off the Hemis’ pace by almost a half second. Just qualifying with a Chevy in nitro Funny Car was something to be proud of. Mike did not run well and failed to qualify at the Winter meets. He did better on March 15 at Dallas for its season opener. Ten FCs ran and all ran three races. Burkhart beat Bernie Williams in his first race. The two ran again in round two with the same outcome: Mike ran 8.03 over Bernie's 8.25. He made it three straight with a 7.91/184.80 over the Mustang's 7.95. He and Kelly Chadwick were considered the co-winners as both had won all three of their races. He also ran well at Miami-Hollywood later in the month for an eight-car show. An opening round 7.62/187.58 beat Ronnie Hunter's 7.90/190 and in the semifinals, he stopped Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" with a 7.78/193.29 to the Duster's 7.89/195. This was an unusual final, as it featured two Chevy powered cars. That was rare in '70 with all the strong Mopars. He faced Clare Sanders driving the "Super Camaro" and his 7.82/190.00 finished runner-up to Clare's 7.65/192. Also ran 6.22 at Southeastern Dragway Dallas, GA (900 feet).

Bob had problems and slowed to 7.54/165.74 in a runner-up finish to Charlie's 7.09/191. Bob was at Maple Grove on June 26 for the NHRA Division 1 race. In the first round, he beat Wayne Oxner with a 7.52/191.08 but lost Phil Castronovo in the semifinals. In July, he was at Budds Creek for the Funny Car Nationals. Terry Hedrick got out of shape against him in the first round, and Bob advanced with an 8.20, but in round two, he had handling troubles and lost to Lew Arrington. He also ran 7.12 at Suffolk this year. | Cain ran 206.16 at Suffolk 7/17/71 (Drag News). He ran 6.98 at West Salem 8/28/71 (Drag News). - Dennis Doubleday

Notes: Late in March, Cain was at Cornhusker Raceway for a best of three match race against Doc Halladay, driving Bill Schifsky's Pinto. In their first race, Don's piston burning 7.93/192 lost to Doc's 7.66/197. Cain had to change pistons before their second race and could not get it done in time, so Halladay made a solo to win the second race and the match. Since the race was scheduled for three runs, the two came back for the final race, which Don won with his 7.80 beating the crossed-up Pinto's 8.32. On April 29, he was at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD, for a best of three against John Dekker. Don won the first two races with times of 7.69 and 7.37 before he lost the final race to a holeshot. His 7.23/188.96 lost to Dekker's 7.26/213. Cain was at Beech Bend on July 4 for its Independence Day Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.95/214.28 beat Preston Davis' 7.22/191. He improved on those times in the semifinal, where he ran 6.85/216.34 to upset Ron Colson's 7.00/200 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He faced Paul Radici in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Paul's 6.86/188 get the victory over Don's hard-charging, 6.88/208.81. Shortly after that, he won the NHRA Division 5 race at Cornhusker. He beat Byron Nelson in the first round, with a 7.26/214.28 and a 7.22/210.28 in the semifinals dropped Doc Halladay's tire-smoking 10.00/124. In the final, his opponent, Jere Wilson, had problems and shut off to 9.15/110 while Cain grabbed the victory with a 7.80/210.28. A couple of weeks later (July 22), he was in Minnesota for the next NHRA Division Five race. Unfortunately, he got crossed-up in the first round, and lost to Dekker.

Notes: Ran 7.47 at Rockingham. | On March 16, Fritz raced at an eight-car show at Green Valley Raceway. He won his first-round race with an 8.32 over Bob Manion's 8.61. In the semifinal, a 7.98/180 beat Gene Snow's ailing Charger. In the final, Henry Garcia's 8.12/181 beat his 8.47/178.21. In mid-April, he was at Indianapolis, where four FCs were running. A 7.75/184 beat Terry Ivey in his first race while in his second race, a 7.82/182 lost to Pat Minick's 7.66/194 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He ran his best of the day in his last race, a 7.74/185 over Paul Stefansky. On April 26, Callier won an Funny Car meet at Houston, setting a 7.86 track record. Late in May, he was at Gary, Indiana's, US 30 for the Drag News Invitationals. A first-round 8.11/198 beat Arnie Beswick, while in the semifinals, he picked up to a 7.66/204 to beat Don Schumacher's close 7.67/200. He was to face Minick in the final, but it rained, and the final never came off. Fritz had an interesting day on June 8 at the AHRA Springnationals. He ran well and was on his way to the finals, but things didn't work out. He started by winning his first-round race with a 9.96 when Shirl Greer fouled against him. In the second round, the impossible happened, Danny Ongais fouled away a 7.61, and Fritz won with a 7.89. In the semifinal, Callier was to face Dick Harrell, but Dick lost fire, and the backup car of Mickey Thompson/Danny Ongais was fired up to replace Harrell. Unfortunately, the starter failed to notice Ongais fire up and sent Callier on a single. During the mix-up, Harrell refired, and he and Ongais raced down the track. Thompson, quite heated, demanded a rerun between the cars, and Fritz agreed. On the rerun, Danny's 7.76 beat the Camaro's 7.93. During this time, Callier's car was known as the car to beat in Houston. He ran against Co-Go Eads' Mustang there in a best of three match race in June. Eads actually beat Fritz in the first race with an 8.12/176 win over the Camaro's 8.41/175, but Fritz came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 8.13/178 and a solo when the Mustang broke a blower drive, 8.08/180. On August 24 at the AHRA World Championships at Green Valley, a first-round 7.82 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.65. At Bristol for the AHRA All-American Championships, they held a race on September 6 during qualifying; their actual race was to be held the next day. But on the 6, Fritz ran 7.64/187.50 and 7.99 in the first two rounds before meeting Terry Hedrick in the semifinal. A 7.75 beat Terry's quicker 7.72. In the final, he had to shut off with no oil pressure giving Ronnie Runyan the win. The next day, for the real race, a 7.70 beat Tony Wahlay in the first round, but Wahlay got back in on the break rule and met Fritz again in round two. Once again, Fritz beat the 'Cuda, this time with a 7.73. Unfortunately, the Camaro broke and was unable to make the semifinal, reinstating Mike Burkhart. He competed at an eight-car show in Dallas on September 20, but a first-round 7.69 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 7.52. At Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals on October 19, he ran a first-round 7.79 over Bob Manion, but a 7.68 by Gene Snow in the second round beat him. He met Snow at Houston for a best of three match. Fritz lost the first two races and the match when he smoked the tires to an 8.25 loss to Gene's 7.88, and in the second race, he fouled away a 7.94. He did win the final race with a 7.97, beating Snow's 8.20.

Notes: The day of the Chevy-powered FCs had come and gone, but no one was about to tell that to this team. Fritz was at Dallas on March 15 for the season opener. He lost two straight against Jake Johnston in the "Blue Max" before Jake fouled away a 7.26 in their last race. Callier won the Mr. Chevrolet race held at Gary, Indiana, on April 25. It was a six-car field with all drivers making at least two runs. Fritz ran 7.85/193 to beat Tony Wahlay's 7.86/190 in the "Warlord," and a 7.51/207 defeated Dick Harrell's 7.57/204 in his second race. That got him into the final against Randy Walls, and the "CKC" team took the victory with a 7.78/203 over Walls' 7.98/196. In June, he qualified #1 at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals with a 7.40. He beat Marv Eldridge's Corvette in the first round, and a second-round 7.74/189.86 topped Curtis Wasson's 7.75. He advanced into the final with a solo 9.10 when Dick Harrell lost fire. In the final, he ran Gene Snow. Callier tried hard, but his 7.77/187.10 finished runner-up to Gene's 7.35/205.00 (Top Speed).

Notes: In late March, Fritz was at Victoria Dragway in Texas for a best of three match race against Cecil Lankford, driving the "Brand X" Mustang. In their first race, Callier reset the track record to 7.06 at 206.16 while beating Lankford's 7.37/189. Fritz then set both ends of the track record in the second race with a 6.71/217.90. Cecil smoked the tires to 7.62/200 in his loss. The final race saw Fritz show that his times were not a fluke as he won three straight with a final 6.75/216.34 over Lankford's 7.02/211. The track records going into this match were 7.17/208.80, both held by Lankford.

Notes: This was Fritz Callier's last year campaigning an FC. Early in '75, the car was up for sale in National Dragster. The ad stated that the Vega used a Logghe chassis and a Ramchargers-built Hemi. The car never did sell and was parked under a tree in JE Kristek's driveway on July 20, 1974. It sat there for 30 years before it was purchased by a San Antonio individual who restored it with the help of the original CKC crew. | Was Buddy Cortines out of the team at this point?

Notes: Camenzind got his fuel Funny Car driver's license at Kansas City in July. His best pass was 6.19/220. Just a week later, NHRA Northstar Nationals where he qualified #15 with a 6.021/232.13. It was his first national event. His two qualifying passes were 6.06/232.13 and 6.021/229.06. Before this, his best alcohol run had been 6.46. He surprised himself and Mark Oswald in the first round, when his 5.945/212.16 beat Mark's tire-smoking 6.18/248 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In round two, he got a gift from Don Prudhomme when the "Snake" fouled away a 5.55/264, and Larry cruised into the semifinals with a 6.83/144.71. The ride ended when eventual winner Ed McCulloch beat him with a 5.42/268 to Larry's 6.01/205.76. Larry improved at NHRA Topeka, qualifying #11 at 5.694/258.84. In round one, he ran a decent 5.763/248.61 but lost to Bruce Larson's 5.40/266.

Notes: Jerry's first Funny Car. Former Howie Neal 'Strip Teaser.' Neal ran the car in 1967, Caminito injected in 68, then blown in 68 and blown all 1969. | Caminito started the season at Miami-Hollywood on January 5 for a six-car show. Two cars bailed, and it became just a four-car affair, and in the first race, the Comet blew a transmission while racing Bruce Neff in the "Stroker" Camaro. Jerry qualified third with an 8.14 on February 16 at Miami's Winter Championships. He beat Tom Donahue in the first round, but had his blower explode, wrecking his Comet body. Jerry ran at Bristol on June 8 for the AHRA Springnationals, but he lost to Ronnie Runyan in the first round. He also competed at the third annual New Jersey State Championships on August 10 but fouled in the first round, running 8.99/147. On August 24, he met Bruce Neff at Dragway 42, West Salem, for a best of three match race. In the first race, he got out of shape on an 8.58/165.74 pass that lost to Neff's 8.35/178.21. In the second race, he fouled away an 8.33/178.02 that lost to Neff's nearly identical 8.35/178.21 (they checked the clocks). In the final race, Jerry's 8.33/169.49 beat the Camaro's 8.54/163.

Notes: After five years out of the sport, Caminito returned in 1979. Jerry did not run any NHRA national events in 1979. Jerry was at Richmond Dragway in August for the NHRA Division Two race. Only six cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car field. In the opening round, his 6.96/146.10 lost to Dominic Santucci's 6.77/177. Photo from a PHR centerfold, which stated that the new car had gone a best of 6.56/229.59. We need to validate the date of this PHR issue. It seems suspect as Jerry ran 6.56/229.59 in the early 1981 NHRA competition. It's possible he also ran these exact times in 1979, but let's validate.
