Notes: Brown started his season at Miami-Hollywood in January for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #9, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Paul Smith who was driving the "Fireball Vega." Smith reset the track ET record while beating Brown in their opening round race. Cliff was at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an easy field to make as his 10.13 qualified #13. In the first round, he lost a supercharger and the race to Jim Paoli. In June, he was in Atlanta for their Funny Car Invitational. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the first round, Cliff ran a 7.08 to beat Shirl Greer's 7.22 in Billy Holt's new Vega. In round two, he lost another supercharger but still won when Frank Oglesby broke a reverser. The race was then halted by rain. Cliff used a stock stroke hemi to consistent success.

Notes: Cliff was at Byron Dragway in June for the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. An opening round 6.67/215.22 fell to a 6.81/218 holeshot by Charlie Proite, and on his second run, a 6.78/210.77 lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.44/222. He attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals but failed to make the show. On Sept.29, he was at Bristol for the IHRA All-American Championships. He was the first alternate for the sixteen-car field with a 7.11, but when Pee Wee Wallace damaged a motor during qualifying, Cliff took his place in the field. Unfortunately, he lost in the opening round. Stock Stroke Hemi. Cliff also ran 6.62 at Indianapolis (not the nationals).

Notes: Kelly Brown did really well driving this car at its first major event, the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.904/208.33 and an opening-round 6.89/212.26 beat Leonard Hughes. In round two, he made an easy pass when Bobby Rowe failed to fire. In the semifinals, Brown set Top Speed at 218.97 (6.81) while defeating Henry Harrison in Mickey Thompson's now Chrysler-powered Mustang at a close 6.96/213. He faced low qualifier Don Schumacher in the final. Don had been running quicker in eliminations, but the final was close. Kelly stepped it up to 6.81 in a runner-up finish to Schumacher's 6.76/218. Early in July, he was at OCIR for its Nitro Championships. He ran his remarkable 227.27 in qualifying, at the time, the fastest run ever. In the first round, he beat Bob Pickett with a 6.91/213.27, but he fouled against Stan Shiroma in round two. A couple of weeks later, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Only ten cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue, and Brown got the #7 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he blew the engine in the first round, and slowed to a 7.35/153 loss to Gene Snow's 7.05/196. Apparently, Kelly had some extra time on his hands on August 19 when he went to OCIR to test the new "Blue Max" Mustang for Harry Schmidt. Ed Pink was also there to see what the car would do. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.731/221.67 qualified #6, but a troubled 7.32/212.76 in the first round, lost to Jim Dunn's 6.97/200. His next stop was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, the following week (September 10) for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. All nineteen cars made just one pass, with the lowest ET being declared the winner. Brown ran 6.93/220 to beat Dave Condit's 7.03/214 in the "LA Hooker." His time was the fourth lowest overall. He was runner-up to Jake Johnston at Amarillo's NHRA Division 4 final. Not long after this, Don Schumacher and then Pat Foster replaced him behind the wheel. Kelly drove the Mr. Ed Charger at NHRA Ontario. We formerly listed a 6.70 for Kelly. Removing that until we get confirmation.

Notes: Larry qualified #1 at the 3rd NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley with a 6.27. It was pretty impressive considering that #2 qualifier was Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at 6.31. Unfortunately, Larry lost early and Beadle went on to win.

Notes: Brown was at Green Valley Raceway's opener in March. Ten cars ran, and in round one, his 6.49 beat Chip Woodall. Unfortunately, the run hurt some parts, and he was unable to return in the semifinal. On April 16, he was back at Green Valley for the second NHRA Division Four race. His 6.62/214.28 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. He lost to Billy Meyer in round one. He qualified #8 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at 6.770/209.79. Larry then lost an amazing first-round match against Tom Anderson. Anderson's 6.770/216.34 just held off Brown's right-there 6.780/218.44. He then went to Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He ran a best of 6.44/222.22 at Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. Larry ran 6.80 at the Ozark Nats on 7/04/78. He then traveled to Baton Rouge in July for the final NHRA Division Four race. Only six cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car field. He beat Jim White in the "Tulsa Oiler" in the first round, with a 6.95/206. But the car broke in the semifinal, and he was unable to run eventual winner Tom Anderson.

Notes: Vic Brown was runner-up to Gene Snow at York 1970 NHRA Summernationals in this car (7.47 to Snow's winning 7.27). He won an Englishtown Funny Car show at a Low ET/Top Speed 7.43/198.23 over Tom Sneden in the Bob Banning Dodge. Early in September, he was at Englishtown for its Fallnationals. There was an eight-car field of FCs, and in round one, Vic's off-pace 8.51/190.67 lost to Arne Swensen's 7.86/180. He did not run in the semi-final, yet somehow got lined up against "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final. JJ's 7.30/201 got the win over his 7.61/184.04. Soon after that (September 20), Vic was at Epping for the New England FC Nationals. It was a 32-car show, and in the first round, he lost to JJ. He got back in the show when Tom Sneden broke after winning his first-round race. He didn't get to stick around long as he again lined up against Liberman and lost again. This time JJ's 7.03/207 put his 7.43/203 on the trailer for good. Brown qualified with a 7.59 at Dallas International for the NHRA World Finals. In the opening round, he made an easy run when Jake Johnston broke a transmission in the "Blue Max." In the second round, he lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.86. | AKA Black Shadow. Why is Ray Beadle's number shown? Pretty sure this was Vic. Is 426 an AHRA number? Vic's NHRA number is 403. | Best NHRA national event time was 7.395/197.36. Formerly listed as 214.00, but that is likely incorrect. Let us know otherwise.

Notes: Rob failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 6.63/221.13 qualified #7 for the eight-car show. He got a solo in the opening round of eliminations when Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian," broke. But in the semifinal, his 6.91/171.42 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.41/211. The team then went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where they failed to qualify. Ran 6.96 at Firebird.

Notes: The car carried Bundy's name in '81, changed to "Gold Digger" in '82-'83. John was in Atlanta early in March for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify as traction was horrible. It only took a 7.48 to qualify, and the cars of Raymond Beadle and Kenny Bernstein were among the non-qualifiers.

Notes: Dave Braskett and Gary Burgin had raced a Camaro in '71. For the '72 season, they changed to this 116" Buttera-built Vega. Not only did they change the body, but for the '72 season, they also changed from the 392 to a stock-sized, Keith Black built 426. It retained the independent front suspension the Camaro had used and, out back, a Detroit Locker carrying 5.43 gears. Gary was at OCIR in January for the All-Pro Opener. He won the eight-car show by beating Jim Dunn's 6.94/212 in the final with a 6.82/213.27. He didn't do quite as well at the second OCIR All-Pro event, as he lost to Ray Alley's 6.85/209 in the first round, with a 6.94/210.28. Things went bad at the Lions Grand Premiere on January 28. He qualified #2 with a 6.72, but he crashed into Joe Winters' car in the first round, and Burgin's car flipped. He was OK; the car, not so much. The team attempted to qualify at the Pomona Winternationals but was a DNQ (times unavailable). Gary was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. He qualified #5 with a 6.87, but a first-round 7.06 lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.67. Another loss to Ruth came not in the first round but in the final at the Las Vegas National Open on March 5. Burgin's final round 7.11/207.84 lost to Ruth's 6.97/207. Gary qualified #9 at NHRA Indy at 6.569/225.00 but lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.46/229.59 with a 6.605/217.39. We need to validate the 6.50/226 numbers; were those just the abbreviated Indy numbers? Gary was an NHRA record holder for a short while. Also, 6.66 at 222.22 in winning the All-Pro Series in 1972 and ran 6.61 at OCIR.

Notes: Gary started the season on January 1 at Irwindale's New Year's Funny Car Festival. He qualified #15 with a 7.68, but his transmission got stuck in reverse in the first round. That gave Tom McEwen a single into round two. The next day he was at Fremont for their Funny Car Championships. A first-round 7.62/187.80 lost to Pat Minick's 7.47/197 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He was at OCIR for the first OCIR All-Pro race, but he lost early. He failed to qualify at the second All-Pro race on January 24. He also could not make the show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (times unavailable). OCIR held an eight-car show in March, and although Burgin's 7.28/202.24 lost to Jim Dunn's 7.03/187 in the first round, he got back in on the "break rule" when Dunn was unable to run in the semifinal. Gary advanced into the final with a 7.85/134.32 when Ron O'Donnell broke in the "Super Chief." In the final, he slowed to an off pace 7.48/201.34 that lost to Gene Conway's 7.07/187. He had problems on March 20 at an eight-car show at Lions. As he was approaching the line for his first-round race with Dave Beebe, the super low Camaro snagged the electronic roller starter system and fractured the oil pan. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 27. Gary qualified #10 and, in the first round, beat Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's Cuda with a 7.27/197.80. In the second round, his 7.34/185.95 beat Bob Pickett's late 7.33/151.00, but he broke on the run and could not make the semifinal. Lions held an eight-car show on April 24, and Gary was there. He beat Pickett in the first round, with a 7.34/182.42, but in the semifinals, he blew his motor on a 7.52/169.81 loss to Bob McFarland's 7.32/174. He was at OCIR on May 1 for the Big Four Championships, but he lost in the second round to Sush Matsubara. Irwindale hosted the NHRA Division 7 race on May 15. The eight-car Funny Car field was led by Dunn while Burgin's 7.26 qualified #5 setting up a first-round meeting with these two that Gary lost. Irwindale held its Memorial Day Championships on May 31, and Gary reached the final, where his 6.96/213.76 lost to Matsubara's 6.92/216. He finally grabbed a win when he won over an eight-car field at Lions on June 12. His final round times were 6.89/208.33. At OCIR's March of Dimes event, Burgin shut down early in a first-round loss to eventual winner Dave Beebe who was driving the "Mr. Ed" car. He was back at OCIR on July 3 for the Nitro Championships. He eased to an 8.39/111.38 when low qualifier Siroonian had to shut off on the line with a water leak in the opening round. But in round two, Beebe stopped him again, this time with a 7.00/217 to Gary's 7.16/212.26. The following day (July 4), he was at Irwindale for the Independence Day Championships. It was an eight-car field, and Burgin set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.04 at 207.37. But Beebe seemed to have Gary's number because his 7.13/206 put Burgin on the trailer in the opening round. | 426 CID via opened-up early - not late - hemi, per feature in 8/71 Hi-Performance Cars. - RT

Notes: Gary was running hard in '75. It was a good lead-up to his great '76 season. He started the '75 season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere, qualifying #5 in the sixteen-car show. He lost in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.44 qualified #14. A first-round 6.40/205.47 beat Neil Leffler, but unfortunately, he had crossed the centerline and was disqualified. He ran at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.46/212.76 qualified #7 in the twelve-car field but had the misfortune of breaking in the first round, against Don Prudhomme. At the Gatornationals, Gary ran 6.42/227.27 to qualify #3. He beat Gordon Mineo in the first round, but lost to Shirl Greer in round two, where he overpowered the track and smoked the tires. His next stop was at Irwindale for the 32-car Coca-Cola Championships. Gary beat an out-of-shape Leroy Chadderton in the opening round with a 6.80/178.92 and an easy 7.43/152.02 advanced past Larry Arnold who got sideways in the Mickey Thompson Grand Am and shut off. In round three, Burgin had another easy run where Norm Wilcox, driving the "Hawaiian," had issues and shut off on the line. But in the semifinals, he broke against Prudhomme, and the "Snake" ran a track record 6.25 to win. In May, he got a runner-up finish to Jake Johnston in the Pisano and Matsubara Vega at the Irwindale Fox Hunt race. Fremont also held a "Fox Hunt" race in May, and it featured the FC's running the Top Fuel cars with a .30 handicap on the 'tree. The cars all made three passes, and in Gary's first run, his 6.55/213 beat Dave Uyehara's Chevy-powered car. The second race was weird as the 'tree was never activated, yet his opponent, Gary Ritter, flew to an apparent win with a 6.71/172 while Burgin shut off on the line. The third round was stranger still: as soon as the 'tree blinked green, he and James Warren roared off, and the power went out. No times were recorded for their runs, but witnesses said that they were flying. Warren crossed the line first. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.50/215.82. A first-round 6.54/211.76 beat Al Segrini's 6.68/201 in the "Black Magic" Vega. But in round two, his 6.58/221.13 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.45/205. Gary was back at Irwindale for its Doubleheader (motorcycles and FC) event. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.72/197.80 beat a tire-smoking Arnold who was now driving the "Lil' Demon." But a 6.76/208.33 failed to get past Jim Dunn's 6.57/210 in the semifinal. He had an interesting outing at the first NHRA Division 7 race at Sacramento. He soloed in the first round, setting Low ET and Top Speed at 6.55/211.77. In the semifinals, he made another single at 6.73/161 when Dunn's Satellite broke. In the final, he went up against Roger Garten. It wasn't much of a race as Burgin had an oil fire on the line and shut off while Garten grabbed the win. Near the end of June, he competed at the OCIR Nitro Championships, but he failed to reach the finals. On July 13, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.29/222.22. He advanced past a broken Bill Leavitt in the first round, with a 6.54/204.80. In round two, he smoked the tires and lost to McCulloch. The following week (July 20) found Gary at Minnesota for the third NHRA Division 5 race. It was only a four-car show, and Burgin won quite easily, setting low et and Top Speed in the final with a 6.67/221.67 over Carl Swanson's 6.97/200. He also won the next Division 5 race at Bison Dragways in Manitoba. He set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 6.69/222.22, and in the final beat Topper Kramer's 7.06/184 with a 6.73/222.22. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Gary didn't run as well as he would have liked. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5 with a 6.60/213.27, putting him in a first-round match with low qualifier Prudhomme. Gary's off pace 6.75/216.86 lost to the "Snake's" 6.47/212. The fourth NHRA Division 7 race was held at Bonneville Raceway on August 17, and the Funny Car field was again reduced to just four cars. Gary's 6.84/201.27 qualified #2, but in the first round, he was upset by Dennis Geisler's 6.65/199 in the "Lil' Demon" that beat his 6.94/204. Burgin ran 6.313/203.61 and 6.47/184.42 in winning the Funny Car Race of Champions at Englishtown, NJ, in August 1975. He had won Division 7 in 1974. - RT | Photo from Indy 1975. - MS | Ran 6.31/228.42 at Indy US Nationals 9/75.

Notes: Gary's one-year sponsor from Pete Rose Candy Bars. Burgin started the season by qualifying #2 at the AHRA Winternationals and going to the final, where he lost to Tom Hoover. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.37/230 qualified #15. He lost to Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round. The NHRA Gatornationals had Burgin run 6.35/238.09 to qualify #10. In round one, he smoked the tires to a 7.72/125 loss to Raymond Beadle's 6.21/239 in the "Blue Max." The following week(March 18), he went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car but failed to reach the final. He also ran at Atlanta Dragway for the IHRA Dixie Nationals in April but failed to reach the final. In May, he won the "Jungle Jim" Memorial (Dutch Classic) race at Maple Grove. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.28/233.16 before stopping Bruce Larson's 6.42/219 in the final with a 6.33/231.36. He then won his second NHRA career race at Columbus for the Springnationals. A 6.19/237.46 qualified #7. in the opening round, Burgin's 6.41/233.16 defeated Tom McEwen's 6.53/214. A round two 6.35/235.60 beat Hoover's 6.40/237. Al Segrini's car caught fire on the line in the semifinal, so Burgin soloed with a 6.51/233. He faced Beadle in the final, and Gary's 6.49/239.36 got the victory over the "Max's" 6.69/207. Shortly after that, he was at Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. Unfortunately, Burgin broke in the first round, against Beadle. Gary won the NHRA Springnationals this year. He ran well on the NHR tour, but not earth-shattering. His best numbers were from qualifying #14 at Indy with a 6.120/244.56. Is this the Monza, rebodied?

Notes: A dismal year, performance and sponsor-wise. Gary started the year by qualifying #1 at the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to Don Prudhomme. Gary failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and a best of 6.30 also was unable to qualify at the Gatornationals. He did make the eight-car field at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 but went up in smoke in the first round, and lost to Raymond Beadle. Gary was at Maple Grove in April for its Spring All-Pro race. It was an eight-car show, and Burgin won his first-round race over Bruce Larson with a 6.20/232.55 but fouled in the semifinals against Bob Seifert. He was back at Maple Grove in May for the Jungle Jim Memorial race. Six cars made two runs each, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gary's first race saw Dale Pulde beat him with a 6.27/229 to his 6.43/229.00. His 6.35/228.42 beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" Mustang in his second race. Unfortunately, neither of his times was good enough to make the final round race. At the NHRA Springnationals, Gary had all kinds of problems and failed to qualify. He had a blower explode, and after fixing it, every other attempt to qualify had the car go up in tire smoke. It was upsetting considering that he had won this event the year before. He did much better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where a 6.015/242.58 qualified #2 behind Beadle's 5.94. Gary beat Rick Johnson in the first round, with a 6.12, but in round two, he lost to Al Segrini. He then went to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.44, but another 6.44 in round one, lost to Prudhomme's 6.23. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field at the PHR Championships with a 6.15/235.60. An opening round 6.42/222 beat an out-of-shape Stan Bowman, and in the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.31/238.09 (Top Speed) when Billy Meyer's reverser broke after his burnout. In the final, he ran Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," and his 6.44/236.84 finished second best to Colson's 6.20/231. The following week (August 17), he stopped off at Epping, New England, for the NHRA Division 1 Final, where he qualified #1 with a 6.01/241.28 (Top Speed). He set Low ET in the first round, where his 6.01/240 beat Pulde's 6.13/223. He shut off to 8.70 in the semifinal, but that was good enough to win as Al Hanna crossed the centerline and was disqualified. This put Gary into the final against Johnson. Once again, Gary's opponent crossed the centerline, and Burgin got the victory with an 11.33/71.59. Another win came at Englishtown over an eight-car field where Gary set Low ET at 6.09. He also ran 6.26/240.64 to beat John Speelman. In the final, he met Paul Smith driving Larry Coogle's "Sting." Gary won with a 6.12 at a new track speed record of 243.90 over Paul's 6.38/194. More disappointment came at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where his best of 6.11/241.28 failed to qualify for the show. Yet, just two weeks later, he won the IHRA US Open Championships at Rockingham. There he qualified #3 with a 6.19, and in the first round, he beat Frank Oglesby with a 6.37. He set Low ET of the meet in the semifinals with a 6.07/238.72 over Pulde's 6.24. This put him against Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" car in the final. It was a close race between the two, but Gary's 6.26/237.46 prevailed over Rosberg's 6.28/239. | I've heard that Gary built this car himself at J. Notes: Burgin started the '81 season at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.53/223 lost to Ed Moore's 6.37/225. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.237/236.22. He faced Mike Dunn in round one, and lost a 6.21/236.22 to 6.47/229.59 decision. Gary qualified #15 at Gainesville with a 6.111/239.36, but he hit the guardrail in qualifying and could not return. His next event was the Summernationals, where he qualified #7 at 6.037/244.56. But he shut off an 11-second pass in round one, that sent Dale Pulde on a 6.14/234 ride to round two. Gary was the third alternate at Sanair (times not available), but he qualified #6 at Indy with a 5.982/234.37. However, first-round blues struck again, and Fuzz Miller advanced at 6.58/201 when Gary slowed to a 7.79/108. Gary qualified #9 at Fremont with a 6.074/234.98. He got past Dale Pulde in round one, 6.09/229.59 to 6.34/229. Gary then beat Al Segrini in round two, 6.15/232.55 to 6.24/225. And he won a great match over Ray Beadle in the semis, 6.22/234.37 to 6.23/230. He faced Mike Dunn in the finals, but despite a great .514 to .547 holeshot, the Hawaiian car passed him at the top end, taking a 6.11/236 to 6.16/230.76 victory (.017 seconds - about 5 feet). Gary qualified #3 at Orange County for the FInals, running 6.005/237.46. He beat Jim Moore in round one, 6.041/230.76 to 6.46/187, and got around Rob Williams in round two, 6.063/241.28 to a shutoff. Burgin then beat a broken Dale Armstrong in the semis with a 6.054/234.98. He faced Jim Dunn in the final. Dunn stayed consistent while Gary fell off and took his second runner-up of the season, 6.10/235 to 8.67/105. | Burgin usually ran Jaime Sartes', later built his own cars in '80-'82. - Joe Moore

Notes: Gary started the '83 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where traction was poor. A 7.21 qualified #4, and he beat John Force in the first round with an 11.61. In the semifinal, he ran a 7.90 to beat Brian Raines "Impulse." In the final, an 11.13 was good for runner-up honors as Don Prudhomme beat him with a 7.00. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He led qualifying on Thursday with a 6.09/238.72. On Friday, he came back out and ran 6.022/243.24, qualifying #3. Gary picked up his pace to a 5.94/240.64 that stopped Billy Meyer in the first round. A second-round 6.20/237.46 got around Kenny Bernstein. He met with Tom Anderson in the semifinal, who used a 5.97/236 to stop Burgin's 6.18/234.98. He ran really well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where a 5.87/240.64 qualified second behind Mark Oswald's similar 5.87/254. In the first round, he set Low ET at 5.78 at 238.72 while beating Bernstein's 5.94/245. In the second round, he shut off and lost against Anderson. Gary then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified second. He lasted until the semifinal before smoking the tires and losing to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." OCIR held its 64 Funny Car show in April. All cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Gary's 6.35/230.76 lost to Prudhomme's 6.13/222 in his first race, and in the second, his 6.18/231.95 beat Gary Densham. Unfortunately, neither of his ETs was good enough to advance into the final. He then went to Green Valley Raceway on April 10 for the NHRA Division Four race. Normally, by '83, Fuel FCs were not part of the program. But the track wanted a full show of TF and FCs. It was an eight-car show, and Gary ran 6.29/225.56 in the opening round to beat Johnny West, and a 6.22/233.76 in the semifinal beat Tom Hoover's better 6.17/224. In the final, both he and Frank Hawley, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," slipped and slid down the track, with Burgin getting the victory with a 6.92/221.13. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17, where he had lots of problems and could run no better than 13.54/46.02. The following week (April 24), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. A 6.09 qualified #5, but he lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. Englishtown held its Springnationals race sponsored by K-Mart, and eight cars were competing. He won his first-round race with a 6.27/221.13 when R.C. Sherman's Arrow broke. In the semifinal, he ran 6.11/240.00 over Tim Grose's 6.39/222. In the semifinal, he faced the "Custom Body" car driven by Rick Johnson. In this race, Burgin was the underdog as Rick had run his first "5" in the other semifinal race. The two had a good race, but Burgin's 6.30/234.37 finished runner-up to Rick's 6.25/240. He then went to Maple Grove for its Coca-Cola Spring Championships. His seven-cylinder 6.33 qualified #1 for the eight-car field, and with rain looming, the two Low ET qualifiers met in the final. Burgin lost a blower belt, but his 6.53/220.04 still got the win over Scott Weney's 6.57/222. He did not go to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.13/236.84 qualified #15. In the opening round, his 6.27/235.60 advanced over Meyer's troubled 9.12/83. A second-round 6.26/233.16 dropped Anderson's 6.29/243. He faced Beadle in the semifinal, and Gary's 6.42/171.75 lost to Beadle's 6.10/228. Shortly after that, he won the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race at Englishtown. He had run as well as 6.19/231.95 before he defeated Al Segrini in the final. Both had traction issues, and Burgin won with an 8.42/94.74. He made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car show with a 6.30 best. Later in the month (July), he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but his 6.23 best failed to qualify there as well. He skipped going to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. In mid-August, Burgin was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #13 with a 6.43/214.79. He improved to 6.27/229.00 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough to beat Pulde's 6.06/230. Brainerd was the next stop on the NHRA schedule, and Gary ran 6.04/241.28 to qualify #11. He lost to Anderson's 5.88 in the opening round. This was not one of Burgin's better years, and it showed at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, where he failed to qualify. Photo from 1982 GVRC match race. Assuming this was the Mustang, rebodied. We need to validate. We need to enter other NHRA national event times, but it looks like a best speed of 243.24 on the national event circuit. Where did the 254.23 occur? Iversen "shoehorn" body.

Notes: Harry Schmidt and Mike Burkhart had run a Nova in '66, but for '67 they teamed up on this Camaro that they built in just three weeks. The cost was kept down to just $2,700 as they had a lot of parts on hand. The body came from Fiberglass Ltd. and sat on a 120" chassis. An injected 427 Chevy powered the car that used M/T rods and 12:1 Venolia pistons. A roller cam from Crower was installed. Heads were done by Mondello. The 90% nitro was fed to the engine by Hilborn injection. The rest of the drivetrain was from Mopar, from the push-button TorqueFlite transmission back to the Plymouth rear end with 3.90 gears. Total weight was only 1,750 lbs. The car debuted at the AHRA Winternationals where Mike ran a best of 9.50 on 50% nitro.
