Notes: This actually was George Schreiber's car. He left it in my care while he went on tour with the jet dragster. George said I could run it if I put it together. I bought the engine out of Swamp Rat XXX from Big, put a little different tune-up on it, allowing for the new lockup clutch, and stuck Howard behind the wheel. I didn't have enough time to complete all my license passes before Pomona. A friend of mine owned Pilot Air Freight and gave me a few bucks to run Pomona. I think that was pretty fast for such an old car. It sure was fun. We purchased the engine from DG in early 1987. Unfortunately, 1987 was a year of huge technological advances, going from 1 to 2 mags and fuel pumps as well as from the 12 to the 14-71 blower. We got all the old stuff, but it did come with Don's tune-up sheets from the runs at Englishtown, where he set the record in 1986 and then flipped the car. It turns out we ran the car at Pomona for the finals in 1987, so that's where your times came from. We were quite behind the 8-ball as we didn't realize until we got to Pomona that Don's sheets were based on a 12-71, and he had sent a 14-71. It seemed lean on fire-up, and so we really had to scramble to get it down the track without burning up, but we finally got in a decent pass. For 1988, Don sent me a 12-71, and we ran that since I was low on dough and couldn't afford to upgrade to the two mags and pumps. - Noel Reese | Fourth alternate at the World Finals at 5.640/254.88.
