Notes: Blown small-block Chevy/hydro combo, debuted shortly before the '63 Indy Nationals. Took B/GS trophy at that meet in final over Jerry Mallicoat. Had previously set B/GS record at 131.77. By all counts a beautiful car, unusual in that Merkel retained the clutzier 1937/39 front end (most typically swapped in the cleaner '40-'41). - RT |
