Notes: After starting the year driving the Super Duster, Bobby took the seat in the Hawaiian, replacing Butch Maas. At the 1971 OCIR Manufacturers Meet, Bobby lead the Dodge team (6.78) in qualifying and eventually set Top Speed of the meet with 6.75/224.43 run. He won 2 of the 3 rounds contested, losing only to Jim Dunn's Low ET of the meet 6.70 while running a very respectable 6.76. |

Notes: Steel Chevelle two-door hardtop shell was remounted seven inches back and one inch higher on a factory frame. 427 mill described as either a bored-out 396 (per SS&DI) or a prototype '66 427 block (per CC). Early Chev match basher predated the availability of BBC speed equipment so 427 Ford Hilborn injectors adapted with lots of tubing and welding rod. With glass fenders, doors, hood, deck lid, bumpers, 2,830 pounds wet. Beefed 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic trans, Chev "big car" rear, 4.56:1 gears. Times quoted from the three-week-old car. High nines and 140 mph expected. Featured in SS&DI 10/65 and Car Craft 11/65. - RT |

Notes: Little-known blown '66 Chevy II out of St. Louis, Mo. The AWB match racer was built from a fresh-off-the-showroom car. Subject of a detailed, photo-rich 4-page feature in the 10-66 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. (Work-in-progress photos would provide great details for contemporary modelers.) - RT |

Notes: Smyser's "Terrifying Toronado" was a contemporary of the Hurst Hairy Olds exhibition machine, and by all accounts lived up to the "terrifying" part of its name. Handshakes with the guardrail were reportedly a regular occurrence, from the debut ('66 AHRA Winternationals) to the final appearance ('67 NHRA Winternationals). Like the Hurst car a separate supercharged Olds mill drove each of the axles. Smyser's Toronado differed in that the front engine utilized a Toronado-like FWD Turbo-Hydro trans, while the back one drove through a conventional Olds rear end via a dual-disc clutch (direct drive). - RT |

Notes: The Akins and Hardcastle Stinger II, driven by Gary Southern, was a Chrysler-powered, direct drive, tube-framed Kellison Astra kit car. Neither fish nor fowl, it ran in the funny car classes, the sports car classes, and the fuel altered classes. This car was one of the reasons that NHRA when they instituted the Funny Car classes, specified "Production Bodies only." Hardcastle held the CC/FD record. |
