Notes: Chi-town's Bud Roche and Don Mattison of "GuZler" rail fame bought both of the former "Dodge Chargers" factory exhibition cars that had debuted in 1964. They replaced the blown gas-burning 480" wedge, TorqueFlite combo with a fuel-burning 392 Chrysler direct-drive recipe. One car was destroyed at Cordova, IL, late in the '65 season. The second survived a decades-long disappearance and has recently been fastidiously restored. - RT | Bud Roche drove it once at its debut at Cordova, Ill., did a 360 just off the line, and immediately retired. Guest rail shoe Doc Halladay then spun it on the second attempted run. The car initially had a Positraction rear end, which made it uncontrollable. It was replaced with a solid rear, and Caudle took it to this 10.21/150 in October 1965. On the very next run, the car went end over end at least four times, demolishing the car for good. Earlier drivers who attempted to handle the car in 1965 were Ron O'Donnell and John Kranenberg. - DD |

Notes: Set Deer Park speed record at 192.60. Ed ran Seattle's first seven-second run in an Funny Car on April 27 at an Funny Car vs. AA/GD race. He beat Don Cope's 7.90/187.50 with a 7.99 in his first race. He lost all three of his next races to the Dragsters with runs of 8.42/161.29, 8.27/174.08, and a final 8.52/156.34 that lost to Dave Grassi's 7.60/197.36. On July 19, he faced Kip Brundage in a best two out of three match race at Firebird Raceway in Idaho. He won the first race with an 8.32/178, but Kip returned to win the second race with an 8.02/182 over Ed's 8.12/178.94. Ed reset both ends of the track record in the tie-breaker with a 7.92/191.17 to win the match. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Ran late 1966/67. first as Hilborn-injected, later as blown. Notable for stock-displacement, stock crank smallblock 289 Ford. Ran fuel, backed with a C-4 auto trans. One-piece lift-off glass body and unusual aluminum frame (including rollbar) contributed to light weight. (The truck weighed in sub-1400 pounds, and Nash was quoted in late '66 as saying he was still shooting for 1200.) Still, the aluminum frame scared the NHRA/which banned this construction in 1967, ending the Bronco's career. Nash went on to earn fame for developing the very popular Doug Nash 5-speed transmission. |

Notes: Known as "The Ugly Duckling," the un-sexy 4-door wagon was a practical attempt to improve traction by getting more static weight over the rear tires. Of 11 '64 Comets modified for the factory by Dearborn Steel Tubing, all were hardtop coupes except this wagon. With it Nicholson set Low ET of 11.44 in a large field of A/FXers at '64 Winternationals. After a successful stint with the car Nicholson received a hardtop coupe. The grocery getter was handed off to Ed Schartman in April. The 7/10-64 National Dragster has pictures of this car, unlettered, running under a new non-Nicholson-affiliated sponsorship, driver in Honolulu, Hawaii in July '64, but photos elsewhere show Schartman driving this car at the '64 Nationals at Indy. The Comet wagon was built on a Falcon wheelbase of 109 inches - five inches shorter than the coupe and sedan. It weighed 3280 pounds with rear-mounted battery and fiberglass front body panels. Before Spring, Don had this wagon down to an 11.12. |

Notes: This restyled-for-'68 Skylark replaced the previous '66 iteration. It remained early hemi powered. Pellegrini later recounted that the Romeo Palamides-built chassis was not a successful idea. The upper and lower rails were intentionally not welded together to allow for more chassis flex. The flex made it difficult to steer and Pellegrini ended up barrel-rolling it at 175 mph at Rockford (now Byron) Dragway shortly after its debut. According to Pellegrini, he decided at that point he was a car owner, but no longer a driver. - RT |
