Notes: Blown fuel, Howell 109" tube steel chassis. A Feburary 3/1967, Drag News booking ad says the car ran 8.30/175, probably in 1966. Car was run into 1967, then sold to Dick Stokes, who ran it as an injected funny car on the UDRA circuit as the "Blue Bandit" into 1969. Don Gay, like Arnie Beswick, was a tried and true Pontiac racer. Dubbed the "Texas Teenager" by the drag racing press, Gay started racing stockers and super stockers when he was barely legal to drive out his father's Pontiac dealership. Don Gay's father not only bought racecars for his sons Don and Roy, he also bought Houston International Dragway. In 1964, the Gays built their first funny car out of a GTO. That car was replaced by an all-new 1965 GTO for Don and the old car was passed on to Roy. The Gays contracted famed racer Jay Howell to build the new car, an all fiberglass machine with a full tube chassis. The 421 Pontiac in the "Infinity" GTO was built by James Osteen, who was hired to oversee the Gay's racing operation. Don match raced regularly at Houston International and toured across the country. The beautiful GTO ran deep into the eights. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from Draglist.com) ET Irwindale CA 1966 (1/13/67 Drag News) MPH Dickinson TX 1966 (12/23/66 Drag News) |

Notes: Ronnie Sox only ran funny cars from 1965 to 1966, but he was one of the premier early funny car stars. After a stint with Chevrolet in 1962/63, Sox & Martin got a factory sponsorship in 1964 with this A/FX Comet, which won the title at Pomona that year. They were one of the American teams that visited England in 1964, but the car was likely match-raced in "less legal" trim throughout the South that season. Sox & Martin went to Plymouth in 1965 when a deal with Mercury on personal cars for the duo could not be reached for that season. - GS | Turned 10.84/123.79 early in season to win Factory Stock Eliminator at the 1964 Winternationals. Four-page feature in 11/64 SS&DI claimed an unattributed 10.84/128.50 best-of and car "very seldom slower than 11.1's." - RT |

Notes: Dale Pulde might have only been a teenager when he began racing funny cars, but he was a very capable teenager. Some say Pulde was and is the best driver ever. The Charlie Wilson owned "Vicious Too" 1967 Camaro was Dale's second funny car ride. The flip-top Camaro replaced the mean "Vicious Vette. " Vicious Too was a mid-pack runner with Pulde driving, usually running in the mid- to low-eights. The car was powered by a 427 Chevrolet Rat engine backed a B&M automatic transmission. Cragar sponsored the Camaro, and the car ran the heavy Cragar S/ST wheels instead of the standard Halibrands of the day. Pulde drove the car in 1968 and 1969 running a best of 7.91 at 184. Notes: Lew Arrington was one of the early funny car stars. Lew raced the infamous altered-wheelbase "Brutus" GTO out of the Northern California-based Goodies Speed Shop. A real big block Pontiac powered the modified steel-bodied GTO at first, but it could not stand the excessive amounts of nitro. A 398 (0.30-over 392) Chrysler hemi with Pontiac stamped on the valve covers replaced the pure Pontiac motor. Components: GMC 6/71 blower, Hilborn injection, Art Carr 3-speed Torqueflite trans, stock '65 GTO frame, straight-tube axle, rear-only drums, "Brutus" also was the first ride that made "Jungle Jim" Liberman famous, along with the "Samson," "Hercules," and "Hairy Canary" funny cars. The GTO ran high- to mid-eight second times. Arrington built a new Firebird in '67, while Don Williamson of "Hairy Canary" fame ended up with the much-modified GTO. Future fuel altered driver Don Trillo crashed the GTO bad enough to end its racing career. Times, not necessarily the season best, cited here from feature story in the 11/66 issue of Drag Race. |

Notes: Hayden Proffitt was one the great racers of the 1960s. Proffitt won may races in Super Stock with a Chevrolet 409, then jumped to a Ford when they gave him a Comet A/FX. Proffitt built a Corvair funny car in 1966. The car began with a top, but it was removed after the car wanted to lift at speeds. Les Shockley was tapped to help drive the car in '66. |

Notes: Sidney Foster was one of the first match bash racers out of Louisiana. Foster raced his T-Bolt Fairlane in Super Stock at first, but quickly upgraded the car as the funny car craze began. Sid ran the "Quick Draw" out of the family Ford dealership. The T-Bolt had a 427 wedge backed with a 4-speed transmission. Foster became a regular at tracks in Southern Louisiana and Southeast Texas. The car was changed over the 1965 season, and eventually, the "Quick Draw" ran as a roadster. The wheelstanding Ford ran a 10.33/134 best. The T-Bolt was replaced by new steel match bash Mustang in 1966. (Photo and info courtesy the Foster family). |
