Notes: After two years of running a record-setting SS/D '69 AMX the Shahans moved to a Gremlin and pair of Hornets in Pro Stock. Legal Pro Stock weight was 2,520 pounds, but could run 300 pounds less for match races. 9.89/139.52 times reported as best in 12/71 Hot Rod feature. Notes: Just to prove, I guess, that you could indeed stuff a BBC in a Vega. Impressive accomplishment was campaigned for a relatively short time. Ran 9.62 at Bristol. Car ran 10.50s at the NHRA Winternationals before Joe swapped to the Camaro. That must have been a small block so will be listed separately. |

Notes: Died in a crash at Charlotte Motor Speedway in March 1974, also killing two crew member from another team. Ran 5.577/283.01 and 5.69/219.51 at Pomona Winters 2/73. The 368 was all time rocket dragster quarter mile record until Kitty O'Neil reset it in 1977. | I modified the rocket chamber out of the X-1 Rislone rocket car designed by J.C. McCormick. I made an all-new fuel and pressure system, larger tank, increased the fuel flow, etc. We increased the thrust from 2500 lbs. To 3000 lbs. I installed the propulsion system in my Top Gas Dragster. The car was sponsored by the Tony Fox team. - Ky Michaelson | In 1973, he was the first to break the five second mark on a 1/4-mile track, at 4.99 seconds, and a Top Speed at the finish line of 322 MPH. | At the 1973 US Nationals he recorded a career best time of 4.62 seconds at 344 MPH, the latter remaining the highest speed ever clocked at an NHRA national event. The 368 from Kitty O'Neil newspaper report when she went 394. |

Notes: Owner (not driver) Jerry Hehn's unfortunate and untimely demise in his rocket dragster "American Dream" pretty much defines "freak accident." Though given the failure of every safety device that might have prevented this April 20/1977 death, the word "accident" probably deserves to remain in quotation marks. Hehn and Vern Anderson, the car's driver for years, had permission to use a Peewaukee, Wis. gravel pit to troubleshoot their rocket car, which had been passing unburned fuel during recent runs at a Buffalo, NY, drag strip. Owner Hehn was strapped into the cockpit while they test-fired the rocket several times. Brakes set, they fired the engine again, but the throttle of the 3,500-pound thrust motor stayed open, hurtling the car 450 feet into a large rock, then burying it four feet deep in a pile of gravel. Hehn was dead at the scene. Newspaper accounts said two emergency cutoff switches in the cockpit failed to function. The speed at impact was estimated at 140 mph. - RT |

Notes: The first year driving. We need to confirm the best times. Confirmed 6.13/282.65 at Dragway 42 in August 1972. Newspaper reports said the fastest rocket at 311 mph, but that was Vic Wilson in 1971. The same paper cited 5.71/289 mph at IHRA Longhorn Nationals (Dallas) in June '72. Original Draglist listing cited 310.34 mph. Confirmed 267.12 at Great Lakes on 9/3/72. The car was destroyed at over 250 mph in a late-season wreck at Irwindale. It was not repairable. | The car ran at the Tulsa PRA race and was featured in the movie Funny Car Summer. |

Notes: Dubbed "The World's Quickest Wedge," Bovan's '64 Polara ran a 484" mill (426 wedge with a half-inch stroker). He generally ran gas through two 4bbls, but for exhibition runs occasionally ran alky and under-the-hood Hilborn injectors. Trans was a TorqueFlite; car ran a full stock interior. At Half Moon Bay he set the official NHRA A/MP ET record of 11.45. Bovan's Dodge warranted the cover and four-page feature in Super Stock & Drag Illustrated 4/65. - RT |
