Notes: It was the beginning of the 1966 racing season, and Gene Ciambella clanged the bell loudly when his newly completed Austin garnered the A/GS trophy at both the AHRA Winternationals at Irwindale, and the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. Ran a 9.87/144.19 to beat K.S. Pittman's Willys at the NHRA Winter doings. (Also new for '66, NHRA began the first of a series of confounding-to-some reclassifications of the gas class structure when it retitled the "classic" A/GS as AA/G, B/GS as BB/G, etc.) Lastly, about this time Ciambella began using another name professionally. He would in the future be known as Gene Conway. - RT |

Notes: Car debuted in 1966; run through '70-71. 420" engine was bored 390 FE Ford. Dunkirk was a lifetime sign painter in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area whose sano Austin gasser could be counted on to collect trophies at Midwest car shows. The picture shows it at Minnesota Dragway in 1969, with a newly chopped lid. - RT |

Notes: Dunkirk swapped the Ford wedge for a blown Cammer in 1970. The car was apparently sold less engine in 1971. Dated pictures show it competing in area car shows in Spring of that year; unknown if it was still being raced as well. Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970. - RT |
