Notes: Gary started the '87 season at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 7 Opener (NHRA D7 Phoenix AZ 1/18/87). He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.56/209.30. In round one, he improved to a 6.50, but he lost to Eldon Slick's 6.40. He was one of only two Rodeck powered cars to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.42/212.46 qualified #15 for the show. Once again, he met with Slick in the first round, and once again, the results were the same. Eldon's 6.38/211 sent Gary's 6.47/210.28 to the trailer. He was at Fremont at the end of April for the second NHRA Division Seven race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #7. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.52/209.79 beat Mark Vasquez's 6.65/204. In Round 1 he faced #1 Qualifier Bill Mullins, while Fiorelli matched his Qualifying ET with a 6.92 at 199.55, it was a holeshot loss to the Eventual winner Mullins's 7.00/182.92. | Don was at Moroso Motorsports Park for the NHRA Division Two final at the end of September. His 7.39/191.89 qualified #4.Both he and Denny Lucas had problems in the opening round, and Don's 9.55/94.04 beat Denny's 10.90-65. He failed to show for his semi-final race against Tony LeBor.

Notes: At the WWCS in Bakersfield in May, Payne ran 6.619/212.26, but was outside the 16 car field looking in. Fortunately for Payne, #16 qualifier John Shoemaker was unable to make round 1 & Payne got in to face #8 qualifier Bill Barney. Unfortunately, Payne's 6.77/204.08 was no match for Barney's 6.52/208.81. Payne then went to Fremont for the WWCS where he qualified #3 in the 16 car field with a 6.374/215.31. In round 1 he faced #11 qualifier Dave Hansen. Payne's 6.61/210.28 was a losing effort to Hansen's 6.545/208.81. At the US Nationals, Payne qualified #13 with a 6.540/219.60 & drew #5 qualifier Brian Raymer in round 1. Payne's 6.621/209.20 was a losing time to Raymer's 6.473/214.79. Ran NHRA Winston Finals in Pomona where Payne qualified #4 with a 6.442/214.38. Payne defeated #12 qualifier Billy Williams in round 1 6.594/211.56 to 6.751/209.39 & #16 qualifier Denny Lucas in round 2 6.565/210.77 to 6.641/204.26. Notes: DaPozzo was at Atlanta in March for the NHRA Division Two opener. His 6.58/202.24 qualified #3. In the first round, both he and his opponent, Butch Osmon, ran 6.71 (Al at 205.47), but Osmon got the "win" light. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 at 6.52/208.42 and then picked up to 6.38/210.37 in the opening round to defeat Jay Payne. He continued to improve in the second round, where his 6.34/213.88 beat Doug McCan. He then reset the NHRA record to 6.32 (at 212.76) in the semi-final to take out a fouling Bill Walsh. He faced the only Donovan-powered car that qualified, Don Irwin's, in the final. Unfortunately, Al had problems and shut down to 9.73/86.22 while Irwin ran 6.56/216 for the victory. In the first week of April, he was at Warner Robins for the second NHRA Division Two race. His 6.57/205.47 qualified #1, and in the first round, he beat Bill Mullins with a 6.44/210.28. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semi-final and set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.43/211.76. He went up against Don Woosley in the final, and he slowed to 6.86/210.34 that finished runner-up to Woosley's 6.85/175. His next stop was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.49/210.18. He slipped to 6.73/188.91 in round one, but it was enough to beat Tony LeBor's 6.86/170. But a even worse 6.86/169.23 in the semi-final lost to Billy Williams' 6.66/200. The following week (April 28), he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three opener. A 6.49/210.28 qualified #3. The car broke in the first round against McCan. Al qualified #2 behind Walsh at the NHRA Sportsnationals with a 6.45/210.67. In the first round, he fouled away a 6.54 against Mike Kosky. The following week (June 9), he dominated the NHRA Division 3 race at Quaker City Dragway. Al's 6.57/205.47 qualified #1, and he survived a first-round scare when both he and Irvin ran 6.69/203.61, with DaPozzo getting the win. A semifinal 6.60/205.47 (again!) beat Tony Zizzo and moved him into the final against Woosley. Al set Low ET and Top Speed of the meet with a 6.42/214.28 to take the victory over Don's 6.70/202. Another week later (June 16), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.46 at 210.37. Notes: Bill was at Atlanta Dragway in March for the NHRA Division Two opener. He qualified #1 with a 6.45/213.27. He got to solo when Bubba Sewell shut down in the first round. Walsh ran 6.36/216.34 (Low ET and Top Speed)to advance. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal and ran 6.37/215.82. He was the odds-on favorite to win in the final against Don Woosley, as Don's best had been his 6.51 in qualifying. But in the final, Walsh's car failed to fire, and Woosley got to solo for the win. A week later (March 17), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he qualified #1; this time, his 6.39/216.86 (Top Speed) led the field. A 6.49/213.57 defeated Mike Kosky's 6.60/209 in the opening round, and in round two, he used a 6.42/216.86 to beat Kirk Lawrence's 6.76/199. But in the semifinal, he fouled and shut off against Al Dapozzo. He was back in Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 6.48/212.36 qualified second behind Lee Young's 6.43. Bill set Low ET in round one, with a 6.42/214.38 solo that advanced when Dennis Forcelle failed to show. In the semifinal, he fell off to a 6.52/213.16 that lost to eventual winner Woosley's 6.45/215. Walsh then won the NHRA Division One opener held at Englishtown at the beginning of May. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with a 6.43/214.54. Another 6.43 at 214 beat Richard Boyd's 6.72/202 in round one, and a 6.48/212.01 stopped Bruce Horner's 6.62/206 in the semifinal. He went up against Jeff Jones in the final, and Bill won it quite handily with his 6.49/211.26 getting the victory over Jeff's 6.64/208. He picked up another victory at the second NHRA Division One race held at Cayuga Dragway on May 19. Only five cars showed, and Walsh qualified first with a 6.67/203.61. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the opening round and went 6.60/211.51. He then set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.52/213.01 that covered Al Kenny's 6.75/203. He faced Horner's tough Rodeck-powered car in the final, and Bill set Top Speed on his final run while winning with a 6.54/213.77. He started the month of June off right by winning the NHRA Sportsnationals. Bill set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.40/215.72. He took out Billy Williams' 6.68/211 in round one, with a 6.46/213.57. That was followed by another 6.46 at 213.57, beating Don Irvin's 6.61/189. He got the better of Woosley in the semifinal with his 6.48/209.20 taking out Don's 6.60/184. Kosky was his final-round opponent, and Mike's 6.56/212 failed to top Walsh's 6.46/213.46 for the money. There was just no stopping Bill in Division One. He won the third race at Maryland International on June 9. Of course, he qualified #1 with a 6.38 (Low ET) at 211.76. He then got Top Speed to go along with it in round one, with his 6.56/212.26 defeating Jim Real. A 6.46/211.76 in the semifinal easily got around Richard Boyd's 6.70/203. He faced Jones in the final and covered him by over two-tenths, running 6.44/212.76 to win over Jeff's 6.71/204. Bill was really making it look easy as he also bagged the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. Although this time, he didn't set Low ET or Top Speed. He didn't even qualify first as that honor went to Dapozzo at 6.46. Walsh was right behind at 6.48/213.16. Once eliminations started, he took over. His 6.52/211.16 was the quickest run of the first round. Irvin had fouled against him. Woosley fouled against him in round two, and his 6.63/209.98 advanced. In the semifinal, Kosky's 6.64/209 fell to Walsh's 6.55/211.26. Forcelle was his final round victim, and a 6.53/210.08 covered Dennis' 6.76/202.
