Notes: Gordie started the '85 season by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 7.65/179.92. A first-round 7.66/179.56 beat Gene Fasching, but in round two, he fouled away a 7.65 against Bob Glidden's 7.58. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 7.72/180.28 qualified #8. Tim Nabors fouled against him in the first round, and Gordie shut down to 15.86/91.25 to win. He got out of shape in round two, but his 8.26/145.96 beat Frank Sicinski, who had even more problems at 9.26/118. His easy run ended in the semifinals, where Warren Johnson's 7.55/184 beat his 7.84/179.78. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Rivera qualified #8 with a 7.78/178.35. A first-round 7.84/177.51 advanced when Charlie Garrett fouled, but Rivera fouled away a 7.78 against Dave Hutchens' 7.87 in round two. Gordie ran well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 7.645/182.11 qualified #5. He beat Nick Nikolis in the first round, with a 7.77/177.79, but an ailing 8.17/135.74 in round two lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.78/178. After that, it was off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 7.70/178.92 qualified #7, and in the opening round, he beat Ken Dondero's 7.89/173 with a 7.84/176.40. But in round two, he fouled away a 7.81 against Johnson, who advanced with a 7.64. Gordie ran 7.644/182.40 at the Grandnationals and 7.616/180 at Englishtown. Those were his best NHRA national event ET and speed of the year. We need to complete Gordie's NHRA numbers from all other events.

Notes: Gauthier was the tenth alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.88/173.41. Alban attempted to qualify at the NHRA Grandnationals, but his 7.74/177.23 best was good for the third alternate. His Firebird was awarded the best appearing car at the meet. He qualified on the "bump" at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.745/180.50. He crashed the car during qualifying at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals in September. He had run 7.730/179.49 but still hadn't made the show. He came back for another run, and the car got loose and flipped. He was ok.

He was the eighth alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.82/175.78 best. Things went better at Atlanta, where his 7.81/176.40 qualified #9. Unfortunately, qualifying #9 set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Warren Johnson. Fasching's 7.93/172.02 finished second best in that race to WJ's 7.73/181.

Notes: This was a jaw dropping run, one of those A/Fuel runs that occur every few years when the combo is just right at the right time. | Jimmy showed up at Famoso for the NHRA Division 6 race on May 5 with Gene Adams turning the wrenches. During qualifying, he made passes of 6.69/209 and 6.63/212 before clutch wiz Tony Miglizzi made a clutch adjustment. Scott then went out and ran 6.327/216.34 for the pole in the sixteen-car field. The times held for both Low ET and Top Speed of the meet as it was almost three tenths and ten miles per hour faster than any other A/FD had ever run. Unfortunately, the car broke in the first round, of competition.

Notes: At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Greer ran 8.165/65.84 which was only good for 6th Alternate. | This B&W photo from Bristol Dragway at the end of the track by Dave Gillespie. He took a series of pictures of the car and of Shirl. This was Shirl's return to driving after he was forced into retirement from the subsequent fire at his garage from a lightning hit. Kind of a spooky scenario being that his championship car from the seventies was Chain Lightning. These B&W shots are really good. Some of them have a really good perspective of the driver behind that mammoth B-4 overhead cam motor we ran. Shirl loved the power it produced. He mentioned once while talking to Bret Kepner from ESPN that he felt the torque it produced right up through the frame rails. The original driver, Carl Fumerelle, had the same feeling of the Batten motor. It was a pleasure to see Shirl drive the car. He likened it to a Sunday drive in the old station wagon. He was that comfortable. I wish we could have done more with Shirl. He is truly one of the best drivers ever and truly one of the original southern gentlemen. The color photo is from Milan Dragway in 1989 at the Northern Nationals. I do not know who took this photo. It's nice though. If the photographer has any more, please contact me. If you were on the outside looking in (I mean as a fan or spectator) you only see what happens in front of you. But if you come from the inside (other teams, drivers, owners and engine builders) there is a whole different perspective of what we tried to do. Any new design is going to have inherent concerns. Especially if is a whole new idea right out of the box. No data on fuel demands. No data on valve train weight. No data on piston speed in conjunction with spring pressure. No data on blower configuration. No data on cam design, fuel, air flow. No data on cam shaft harmonics at high rpms. These are all things that you try to figure into the operational product, but until you feed the monster and light her up, you really don't know what happens when the cage is opened. We found out, sometimes as an embarrassing shut down, sometimes as a fire, and sometimes with total destruction of components. Don Garlits told me one day when he was studying the car: "Never give up on your dreams, and never let the guys upstairs stop you from progress. After all, all of us got here because of someone's idea. Hey, I'm Don Garlits, and if I wanna put rubber bands on my front end as tires, well, they won't stop me because I've tried everything." - Phil Bloom
