Notes: John started the year at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.80/245.23. In the first round, he lost a supercharger, and his 6.00/200.89 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.99/238. He qualified #3 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.73/256.41. A first-round 5.76/253 beat Jody Smart, but another 5.76/258 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.74/252 in round two. | At the Sacramento Raceway Winter Classic 4 Car Funny Car show, Force ran 5.69/247.94 in Round 1 & the Low ET 5.65/244.57 in Round 2 & then was the Runner Up to Rick Johnson where Force ran a 5.81/245.91 losing effort to Johnson's 5.72/254.24. | He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.76. He lasted until round two when a spark plug blew out of the cylinder, and he had to shut off, giving Dale Pulde a solo into the semifinals. At the Gatornationals, John again qualified #3, this time with a 5.71/254.66. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.55/204.26 loss to Prudhomme's 5.78/251. John won the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza over Paul Smith in the Custom Body car, 6.29/229.88 to a tractionless 7.36/125.87. National Dragster indicated that "Force was batting about .735 at Raceway Park and had an impressive big-buck operation with the Coke-backed 'Vette." Force ran a 5.85/254.09 at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals to qualify #5. A 6.01/251.25 in the first round, lost to Smart's 5.95/224. His next stop was at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals. He made it into the final against Tom Hoover but was forced to shut off on the line with a water leak. On May 19, he was at Alamo Dragway for an eight-car show. John ran 5.91/237.46 to qualify first and then beat Doc Halladay in the first round with a 5.90/240.64. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 5.84/250.69 take and took out Johnny West. In the final, he met up with Ron Correnti driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo. John made his worst run of the meet, a 6.00/236.22, but it was enough to beat Ron's off-pace 6.45/191. His speed of 250 was the Top Speed of the meet, beating out eight Top Fuel dragsters, including Dick LaHaie and Chris Karamesines. He got a semifinal finish at the Cajun Nationals after qualifying #4 with a 5.85/241.54. He beat John Lombardo in the "Blue Max" with a 5.97/240.58 in the first round, and a 5.97/244 beat Rick Johnson in round two. But he smoked the tires in the semis and lost to Kenny Bernstein. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #3, but he lost early. A 5.75/245.76 qualified #2 at National Trail for the Springnationals. He beat Mark Oswald in round one with a 5.89/247.38 but fell victim to tire smoke in round two, and his 6.29/223.32 was lost to Billy Meyer's 5.81/242. He ran at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Meet in June but had an oil pump break in the first round against Joe Amato's Mustang. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car show at the Grandnationals in Canada, so Force didn't push it in qualifying, running a 6.02/239.36 for the last spot in the field. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.50/179.49 and lost to John Lombardo's 5.93/246 in the "Blue Max." At the NHRA Summernationals, John qualified #3 with a 5.708/257.28. He beat Prudhomme and Jim Head in the first two rounds before smoking the tires in the semifinals and losing to Bernstein. Kenny went to Denver for NHRA's next event, the Mile High Nationals, where he qualified #3 with a 5.84/233.16. He beat John Collins in the first round with a 5.88/235.60, and in round two, his 5.95/243.24 beat Meyer's 5.99/222. This put him up against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. Dale had been running well, hitting 5.83 in his second-round win, so crew chief Austin Coil dialed in a little too much power for their race, and Force smoked the tires while Pulde ran another 5.83 to advance into the final. John skipped the NHRA Northstar Nationals but was back on tour for the US Nationals at Indy. Before the big race, he was one of the eight qualifiers for the Big Bud Shootout. Unfortunately, he was paired against Bernstein in his first-round race, and Kenny's 5.69 beat John's 5.78. The following day, John ran a strong 5.705/255.24 for the actual race to qualify #3. The field was tough, as attested by his first-round win. Force cut a good light, and his 5.83/253.52 held off Graeme Cowin's better 5.81/253. Head had problems and shut off in the second round, while John advanced with a 5.79/246.30. He and Pulde had a good race in the semifinals, but Dale's 5.79/249 outmuscled John's close 5.82/257.58. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. He lost a blower on a 5.72/232.55 pass on his last qualifying attempt. The time was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. He earlier had run 240.51. A first-round 5.97/230.88 advanced when Roy Harris lost fire. But in round two, his ailing 6.03/198.35 lost to Pulde's 5.72/246. He went to Englishtown for the following week (September 15) for the US All-Pro Funny Car Championships. The two lowest ET cars would meet in the final of the ten-car show. Force qualified for the final with a 5.89, and Bruce Larson made the other half of the final with a 5.85. John won with a 5.91/248.56 (Top Speed) over Larson's 6.06/210. John also ran 5.825/243 in winning the ADRL Kansas City International Raceway event in 8/85. John's best NHRA ET was 5.705 at Indy. Did John run 5.65 somewhere this year (ADRA or IHRA)? 1985 ADRA Champion. Confirmed 5.89/245.23, 5.89/248.61, and 5.87/252.10 in winning ADRA Spokane. The best NHRA national event times were 5.705 at Indy and 258.17 at Pomona.

Notes: In January, Hoover started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He was driving his new Firebird Trans Am. It was an eight-car field, and he ran 5.91/227.27 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.97/238.09 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.95/238. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.68/252.31. In the first round, both Hoover and Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car ran 5.76 (Hoover at 229.65), but Oswald won. On March 15, Tom was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 5.81/248.61 (Top Speed). He advanced to the final, where he faced Jim Head. In the final, he slowed to 6.01/228, which lost to Jim's 5.66 track record pass. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.68/254.16. Once again, Hoover lost in round one, when Kenny Bernstein's 5.58/261 beat his 5.73/252.88. He didn't race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race. Hoover was back in Atlanta on April 26 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.76/254.38 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 5.99/233.34 advanced when Tom McEwen exploded a supercharger. In the second round, his 5.88/231.36 lost to McCulloch's 5.66/260. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lost to Oswald in the first round. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as it was postponed one week due to rain and run on May 31, the same day Tom was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Tom sold the car to Gary Page in England. Tom ran a confirmed 260.94 at Englishtown 87. Where was the 264 run? He went 5.87/234 at the AHRA Spokane Finals 8/87. Notes: Photo from Columbus, Oh. -1987. Scott switched from his Mustang bodied car of '86 to the Oldsmobile Firenza for '87. He started the year at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car show and Kalitta had problems running a best of 6.37 that failed to qualify. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but ended up as the sixth alternate for the show with a best of 5.93/229.53. | Scott would then go to the Coca Cola Funny Car Classic at the Texas Motorplex where Scott Qualified 4th in the 7 car field with a 5.815/236.40. In round 1 Scott would get a single after #7 Qualifier Gary Densham broke. In the Semis he faced #5 Qualifier Steve Hodkinson where Scott won with a 5.79/263.46, however Scott scorched the Rod Bearings in that run & couldn't make the Final against #1 Qualifier Raymond Beadle & therefore, Hodkinson would get reinstated. | At the NHRA Gatornationals, Scott qualified on the "bump" with a 5.89/246.50. An off-pace 6.21/185.83 in the first round, lost to Johnny West's 5.79/242 in the "Hawaiian." He had no trouble qualifying for the next NHRA race, the Southern Nationals, when only sixteen-cars showed to fill the sixteen spots available. Kalitta ran 8.82/155.89 to qualify #16. In the first round, he surprised West by beating him with a 5.75/240.51. In round two Scott had problems and slowed to 6.30/227.21, but still won when Don Prudhomme smoked the tires and then shut off. Kalitta's run came to an end in the semifinals where he lost to John Force. He was at Rockingham on May 3 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he lost to Jim Head in the first round. The next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, again had only sixteen-cars show. Scott's 6.86/149.92 qualified #12. The event was postponed one week due to rain and Kalitta was unable to return for the rain date. The rain date was on May 31 which was the day IHRA held it's Springnationals at Bristol. Scott chose to race there instead. Unfortunately, he lost to low qualifier, Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals where the best of 6.04/242.98 was good for the second alternate. The Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove was Scott's next stop. A 5.92 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but in the first round, Jerry Caminito stepped up to a 5.93/241 that beat his 5.97/239.36. He followed the NHRA tour up to Canada for the Grandnationals, where only fifteen Funny Car's showed. Scott ran an easy 6.22/229.70 to qualify #12. In the first round his 6.04/233.76 lost to Prudhomme's 6.00/225. RH

Notes: Bob raced at the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza. The ND article read, "Congrats to Bobby "Twilight Zone" Lagana on his 6.36, 200.00 mph run." Bob brought Bob Pickett's old car and used it to qualify for his first NHRA event at the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. His 6.432/179.49 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.71/173.47 lost to eventual winner Tim Grose's 5.75/230. He was at Englishtown on September 22 for the US All-Pro Funny Car Championships, where he ran 6.64/210. Also, ran 218 somewhere. We need confirmation.

Notes: Teamed with Joe Amato. Photo from Columbus 1987. Bruce had been running his Corvette for the early part of the season until he debuted his Beretta at the NHRA Springnationals in June. It did well during qualifying, running 5.74/249.93 for the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he lost to Jim Head in the first round. The following week, he took it to Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. A 6.16/166.66 qualified #5 in the eight-car field setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein. Larson improved to 5.85/232.55 in their race, but Kenny's 5.71/244 got the win. Bruce went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Qualifying was easy as only 15 cars showed. Still, Larson laid down a 5.88/244.83 to qualify #7. He had a close first-round race against Tom McEwen that saw his 5.93/247.72 lose to McEwen's 5.91/240. Closer to home, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.75/248.55 qualified #10, but a 5.87/251.81 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.64/251 in the "Candies and Hughes" car in round one. He followed the NHRA tour to Denver for the Mile High Nationals where he qualified #6 with a 5.85/244.56. But in the opening round, he smoked the tires and lost to Steve Hodkinson. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, a 5.75/251.18 qualified #12, but again he lost in round one. This time Don Prudhomme's 5.73/253 beat his off-pace 6.08/234.92. Bruce was one of eight-cars that had run well enough to qualify for the "Big Bud Shootout" held in conjunction with the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. But his first-round bad luck persisted when he smoked the tires and shut of to 6.95/135.29 in a loss to Billy Meyer's 5.71/259. For the US Nationals the next day, 21 cars attempted to qualify for the show. Larson qualified #9 with a 5.72. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bernstein where once again Bruce went into tire smoke, and he lost to eventual winner Bernstein. | 261.02 was at the 1987 NHRA Motorcraft Gatornationals Gainesville with the Corvette. He ran 256.33 at Phoenix for the NHRA Castrol GTX Fallnationals on 10/18/87. Just looking for the Fastest Speed recorded in 1987 for Bruce with this Beretta. - Rob McCabe

Notes: Lombardo took out top end blocks on Thursday, damaged left side of body, repaired and white primered. Car went back to all blue, unsponsored in '86. | John qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.09/234.98. A much improved 5.82/243.90 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Tim Grose's 5.73/247. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.89/240.51 qualified #10. Unfortunately, in the first round, Lombardo smoked the tires and shut off against Mark Oswald. John made it past the first-round at the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.88/244.16 meaning that he would face low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in round one. He got around Bernstein and also beat recent Winternationals winner Grose with a 5.93/244.16. In the semifinals, he broke a transmission and advanced Ed McCulloch into the finals. He qualified #9 again at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Raceway, Baton Rouge. A 5.95/222.49 got the spot. This time both he and John Force smoked the tires in their first-round race and Force's 6.07/237 came out on top over the "Blue Max's" 6.32/244.56. | At the NHRA US Nationals John qualified #5 with a 5.741/254.16. He would face #13 Qualifier Jim White in round 1 where Lombardo smoked the tires & watched White take the win.

Notes: Tony had a great NHRA season, qualifying nearly everywhere and running some stout numbers. He drove a Thunderbird through Columbus, where a blower explosion destroyed that body. Was the Daytona just a new body? It probably debuted at Englishtown, where Tony qualified with a 5.429/243.27 and lost to Don Prudhomme in round one. | At the IHRA Loctite Nationwise World Nationals in Norwalk, McCallum qualified #4 for the 8 car field with a 5.568/238.73 & Faced #5 qualifier Doc Halladay in Round 1 where McCallum would lose. | Tony died in a car crash (later this year?) Notes: Motry ran the Byron Dragway Coors Manufacturers Funny Car Showdown in the Unlimited Funny Car race with Nitro Alcohol & Jet Funny Cars, where he faced Al Hanna's Eastern Raider Jet in round 1 & Motry's was violently out of shape & his 8.76/110.76 was no match for Hanna's 6.93/225.00. Motry would run Fill Smith's Flashback Jet FC in his final run, where Motry "improved" with a 7.14/195.65 the hard way when he was again out of shape & killed the engine while Smith blasted away with a 6.58/240.64.
