Notes: Gary failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals eight-car field. On June 23, Cellone was at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He qualified #2 with a 6.44/216.87 behind Bob Newberry's 6.35/218. These two would meet in the final. Gary started his run with a 6.40/216.86 over Larry Dobbs' 6.75/204, while a semifinal 6.43/214.28 beat Dennis Bedrosian's 6.50/215. Newberry held the edge throughout eliminations running a best of 6.36, and he held it in the final by running another 6.36/218 to get the victory over Cellone's 6.42/216.86. | At the Buckeye Nationals at Kil-Kare Dragway on 7/20/85, Cellone would win the event by defeating Joe Comella in the final. | At the NHRA Division 1 final in New England, Gary qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.51/213.01. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Newberry. Cellone picked up to a 6.44/207.13 to beat Bob's 6.52/213. Unfortunately, another 6.44 at 215.56 in the semifinals lost to a quick-leaving Dick Bell, who beat him with a 6.50/215. Gary qualified #2 at the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove with a 6.318/222.22. He beat Dick Bell's 6.44 in the first round, with a 6.34/218.55. A semifinal 6.41/216.65 lost to Frank Manzo's 6.34/221. |

Notes: Jim was at Central Michigan NHRA WWCS in May, Out of the 7 Floppers, Jones was 7th with a 10.96/114.50. In round 1, he got a freebie when #4 qualifier Howard Poepping broke & Jones ran 8.03/177.51. Jones would face #2 qualifier Don Gerardot in the semis. Unfortunately, Jim's 7.54/191.89 was no match for the eventual Runner Up Gerardot's 6.60/213.77. | Jim was at Beech Bend Raceway at the beginning of June for the NHRA Sportsnationals. He ended up as the sixth alternate with a 7.247/188.36 best. Notes: After being out of the sport for ten years, Dakin and Gary Rupp returned to the sport in a big way. At The IHRA Winternationals, the team qualified #5 with a 5.36/266.27. A first-round 5.49/264.70 beat Butch Blair and a 5.42/263.15 beat Don Kohler in the semifinal. In the final, Bob Strauss broke, and Dakin ran a 5.38/269.66 (Top Speed) for the victory. They attempted to make the show at the NHRA Gatornationals, but a best of 5.30 failed to qualify. They tried again in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and a 5.29/258.57 qualified #15. Unfortunately, they lost to Dennis Forcelle in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Mid South Nationals at Memphis, and once again, they made the show with a 5.40/271.41 (#16). Dakin broke in the first round, but still beat a tire-smoking Gene Snow. They could not repair in time for their round two match against Eddie Hill. Back to IHRA for the Springnationals at Bristol in May, they qualified #4 and beat Forcelle in the first round, and a 5.83/237.74 beat Snow in the semifinal when Gene smoked the tires. In the final, it was Dakin's turn to go up in smoke, and his 6.98/170.73 lost to Jim Head's equally troubled 6.90/143. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, a 5.22/271.57 qualified #15. Pat lost to Joe Amato in the first round. In June, in Canada, for the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.32/265.33 qualified #10. Once again, he lost in the first round, this time to Gary Ormsby. Back in his own stomping grounds, the IHRA, Dakin had some trouble qualifying at the Northern Nationals at Milan. His best of 5.61/273.29 left him as the first alternate, but when Kohler fireballed an engine in qualifying, he could not run, and Dakin was moved into the show. In the first round, he improved to a 5.34/260 to beat Mike Brotherton, but in the semifinal, a 5.52/170.73 lost to Snow's 5.31/266. He attempted to make the show at the NHRA Summernationals, but a 5.36/271.32 best left him the fourth alternate. A big win came at the IHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. There they qualified #2 with a 5.34/254.74. In the semifinals, he beat Chris Karamesines while setting a 266.95 track record. A 5.40/264.97 beat John Carey for another IHRA win in the final. | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Dakin qualified #4 with a 5.336/267.06 & Drew #5 qualifier Jim Head in Round 1. During the run the Timers failed but via the ESPN Cameras Dakin clearly got the round 1 win, Dakin drew #1 qualifier Richard Holcomb in the semis. unfortunately, Dakin had a loose & Leaky Valve Cover that couldn't be tightened in time & had to watch the eventual Runner Up Holcomb solo to the finals. |

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Richard didn't run at the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Houston for the Supernationals where he qualified #4 with a 5.02/273.30. He lost to Gary Ormsby in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. Holcomb was at Rockingham in April for the NHRA Winston Invitational race, but the track was damp after rain showers canceled qualifying. It was an eight-car show and all cars were given one shot to make the field. Richard's tire smoking 8.77/93.75 was the first alternate. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There he ran 5.24/259.66 to qualify #11. In the first round his 5.23/251.23 lost to Lori Johns' 5.15/275. In early May, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He qualified #15 with a 5.19/267.45. In the first round to lost to Hank Endres. On May 21 Holcomb was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified last in the eight-car field with a 5.40/245.31, but lost to low qualifier Gene Snow in the first round. The following week (May 28), he was at Baton Rouge's State Capitol Dragway for the NHRA Cajun Nationals where a 5.27 qualified #13 in the field. There he lost to Frank Bradley in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, Richard's best of 5.32/266.58 failed to qualify (sixth alternate). He qualified #1 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals with a 5.273/263.16. A 5.308/260.12 beat #8 qualifier Paul Smith's 5.430/214.60 in the first round, and in the semifinals Richard advanced when Pat Dakin broke on the line with Holcomb running a 5.52/254.24. He faced Snow in the final and despite running a strong 5.336/263.16 he lost to Gene's 5.227/267.86. | He had not run a NHRA race since the Springnationals, but he went to Indy for the US Nationals where he qualified #14 with a 5.12/267.37. Unfortunately, he lost to Johns in the first round. A week later (September 10), Holcomb was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. Only six cars showed and his 5.38/260.30 qualified #4. But in the first round, his car broke giving opponent, Snow a free ride into the semis. |
