Notes: Moats was tough to beat in '85. He didn't make it to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Gainesville for the Gatornationals, where his 6.49/214.79 qualified #4. In round one, he beat John Armstrong with a 6.90/173.14 and a second-round 6.48/211.16 advanced when Wayne Stoeckel fouled. In the semifinals, he ran another 6.48/211.16 to beat Bob Newberry's 6.70/217. In the final, he faced Ken Veney, who had not even qualified but had gotten in as an alternate. Vern had problems and shut off to 12.43/59.03 while Veney ran 7.27/207 for the victory. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he dominated. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 6.41/217.60. In round one, Dave Sebring's 6.95/159 lost to Moats' 6.46/218.55. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.38/220.91 that took out Veney's 6.62/214. In the final, he ran Newberry, and he ran his slowest time of the day, a 6.72 at 217.07, but it was still enough for the win over Bob's 6.79/205. On May 5, he was at Amarillo for the NHRA Division 5 Opener. It was another eight-car show, and Vern qualified #1 with a 6.79. A first-round 6.73/222.31 beat Mike Fialho, and he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.62/225.20 in the semifinals while defeating Dal Denton. In the final, he went up against Charlie Byers, and Vern's 6.70/220.50 grabbed the victory easily over Byers' 7.18/205. Another win came at Brainerd's second NHRA Division 5 race on May 19. It was more of the same story; he qualified #1, Low ET, and Top Speed at 6.49/220.04 in the semifinals over Darrell Amberson, who broke. And then ran 6.53/213.27 in the final to win over Richard Smith. Things didn't go quite as smoothly at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 6.52/215.31 qualified #4 in the eight-car show. He beat Bogie Kell in the first round, with a 6.56/214.38, but in the semifinals, his 6.64/213.87 lost to Denton's 6.48/213. He got back into his winning ways at the Pueblo Division 5 race. It was a rained-out event that ended up taking six weeks to complete. On the original date, Moats qualified #1 with a 7.12/183.25. He ran 6.98/210.30 and 7.25/199.27 to advance to the final against Smith. Then it rained to the final was run at Brainerd six weeks later where Vern's 6.49/216.08 got the victory when Richard Smith was unable to show. The wins kept stacking up. On June 2, he won the NHRA Sportsnationals at Beech Bend. It didn't come easy as his 6.56/216.45 qualified #9 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he faced low qualifier, Newberry, and he stepped up to a 6.47/217.07 to beat Newberry's close 6.48/216. A second-round 6.45/217.70 beat Fred Mandoline's 6.61/217 and a 6.48/216.86 in the semifinal advanced when Denton fouled. His final-round opponent was Steve Group. Steve had troubles and slowed to 8.00/138 while Vern motored to 6.50/216.03 for another victory. On June 8, Bandimere hosted the next NHRA Division 5 race. It was an unusual 12 car show. Of course, Moats qualified #1 with a 6.83/208.33. The next quickest qualifier was Amberson at 7.04! Another 6.83 at 206.89 beat Jim Eberley in the first round, and a solo 7.11/151.00 advanced in round two when Kyle Green broke. He got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 6.84/205.94 in the semifinals. Brad Anderson was waiting to run Vern in the final, and Moats got left on as Brad's 6.81/207 won over Vern's Low ET of the meet 6.76 that was good for the runner-up spot. The story continued at the NHRA Springnationals. He made six passes at National Trail, with the slowest being a 6.41. A Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.28/222.44 qualified #1. In the first round, his "slow" 6.41/218.97 beat Dick Bell. Veney's second round 6.60/207 fell to Moats' 6.36/220.69 in round two, and in the semifinals, a 6.37/219.83 took care of Newberry's 6.52/207. Final round opponent Pat Austin fouled against him, and Vern's 6.38/218.55 got yet another victory. Vern qualified #1 at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 6.271/221.56 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.35/219.40 beat Carol Henson's 6.51/217. In the semifinals, a 6.37/218.97 beat Bob Newberry's 6.40/219. In the final, he ran Frank Manzo. Unfortunately, he broke a blower pulley, and Manzo took the win a 6.39/221 over Vern's 7.82/110.73. |

Notes: Moss was at Indianapolis at the end of April for the NHRA Division Three opener. His 6.85/193.96 qualified #3 for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, the car broke against Ken Veney in the opening round. Shortly after that (May 19), he was at Central Michigan Dragway for the second NHRA Division Three race. A 6.72/203.61 qualified #3. In the first round, his 7.03/195.65 beat Randall Henning's 7.00/206. In the semifinal, his 6.87/197.80 lost to the eventual winner, Steve Group's 6.57/208. Greg was at Beech Bend in June for the NHRA Division Three race. His 6.71/208.33 qualified #4. He was disqualified for crossing the centerline in his race against Jim Jones in the first round. | Moss attempted to qualify at the NHRA US Nationals, but his 6.65/211.66 was only good for 10th Alternate, At the next Race the NHRA Castrol GTX Keystone Nationals in PA, Moss missed the 8 car field where his 6.560/206.23 was 4th Alternate & 2nd Slowest on the list. | Iversen body. |

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1989. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Winter 89/90, Volume 5 Number 1. | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Moss Qualified #2 with a 6.219/226.13. He would Defeat #15 Qualifier Joe Comella in round 1 6.394/223.33 to 6.695/211.76, Get a Gift in round 2 when #7 Qualifier Chuck Cheeseman Red lighted away a 6.324/220.59 & in the Semis, hanging on to a wild ride against #3 Qualifier Mark Thomas where Moss almost Crossed the Centerline & Ran 6.616/218.45. He would Face #1 Qualiifer Bob Newberry in the final where Moss had a better reaction time, but his 6.395/217.92 Couldn't hold off Newberry's 6.252/225 & thus Moss had to settle for Runner Up Honors for the 3rd time of the 1989 IHRA Pro Alcohol Funny Car Season. | Greg was the first alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.20/226.35. He got into the field when Dave Sebring was unable to run and Moss made good by lasting until the semifinals. He first ran 6.25/224.83 to beat Chris Christensen's 6.36/229 and then went 6.22/224.38 over Hugh Kelley's 6.54/210 in round two. But before his semifinal race against Brad Anderson, Greg received some help from Bob Newberry. Bob was in a points race with Anderson, so he offered Moss his supercharger and fuel system. Newberry and his crew installed the items in Greg's T-Bird and it did help as the car left the line hard in the semis, but it pulled the front wheels off the ground and Moss ended up crossing the centerline. Moss qualified #1 with a 6.16/223.19 at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. He worked his way to the final by beating Kurt Prososki's 6.43/212 in the first round, with a 6.21/221.70. In round two he used another 6.21 at 221.97 to down Pete Brozene. He picked up to 6.18/221.74 in the semifinals to stop Ronnie Midyette, but in the final against Ron Scott he was disqualified when he crossed the centerline. 6.201 226.35 NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/89 |

Notes: Newberry's first Corvette burned to the ground at Englishtown. This S&W-built car was going to be the AA/FC Gold Coast Charger, but Bob bought it to compete for the year. Bob was at the NHRA Division 2 Opener in Atlanta on March 10. Only six cars showed for the eight-car field and his 6.78/181.08 qualified last. He shut off in the first round against Bogie Kell. He did much better the following week at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.55/217.90 qualified #6, and in round one, his 6.71/217.28 beat Barry Paton. In the second round, Terry Mullins fouled, and Bob advanced with a 7.42/135.74 shut-off pass. In the semifinals, his 6.70/217.07 lost to Vern Moats' 6.48/211. He scored a victory on April 14 at Englishtown's Spring Funny Car Bonanza. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.69/214.28 beat Carl Ruth's 7.10/203. In the semifinal, he stopped Dick Bell with a 6.86/202.24. His final-round opponent was supposed to be Frank Manzo, but his new car broke while winning his semifinal race. The "break rule" was in effect, so Carol Henson became his final round victim. Bob ran 6.99/209.54 to win over Henson's 7.12/201. The following weekend, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #2 with a 6.42/218.12 behind Ken Veney's 6.41/217. Another strong 6.45/217.18 beat Steve Group's 6.77/210 in the opening round and his 6.51/216.45 in the semifinal beat Terry Mullins' 6.73/205. He faced Vern Moats in the final, and Moats was tough as he had set Low ET in his semifinal race at 6.38. Both fell off in the final, but Vern's 6.72/217 crossed the stripe ahead of Bob's 6.79/205.38. On May 5, he picked up another victory at the NHRA Division One opener at Englishtown. He qualified #4 at 6.56/216.34 and then ran 6.5s to reach the final. In round one, his 6.53/216.34 took out Larry Dobbs' 6.80/204. When John Paris broke, he used a 6.58/216.08 to advance in the semifinal. He faced low qualifier Manzo in the final. Newberry proved he was up to the task by running 6.49/216.60 to win over Manzo's 6.53/217. He also won the second NHRA Division One race at Cayuga Dragway Park. Only four alcohol FCs showed up for this event, and Bob set Low ET in qualifying #1 with his 6.72/210.28. A 6.80/212.76 beat Dobbs' 7.04/185 in the first round, and in the final, he sewed up Top Speed of the Meet with his 6.79/212.76, getting the win over Carol Burkett's off-pace,7.33/187. He stopped in at Atco for a best-of-three-match race with Manzo. Bob won the match two straight by running times of 6.60/214.79 and 6.73/176.12. Manzo wasn't far behind, running a 6.68/215 best. Yet another win came over an eight-car field at Connecticut on May 26. He got a solo in round one and ran 6.61/212.26. In the semifinal, he sped up to a 6.58/217.91 to drop Ruth's 6.84/204. He stayed in the 6.5s in the final with his 6.59/216.84, beating Bell's 6.64/211 for the money. His next stop was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals. Newberry qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.42 (Low ET) at 218.44. But he was upset in the first round when eventual winner Moats ran 6.47/217 to beat his 6.48/216.03 in a very close race. He didn't have to wait overly long to get another win as it came the very next weekend (June 9) at the NHRA Division One race at Maryland International. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a 6.40 (Low ET) at 216.08. His string of 6.4s here was too much, as no one else could run better than 6.71 during eliminations. He opened up with a 6.47/217.12 to take out Bell's 6.77/209, and in the semifinal, a 6.45/217.39 stopped Paris' 6.74/205. It was another one-sided final as Bob ran 6.43/218.18 (Top Speed) for the victory over Burkett's 6.70/202. Bob ran 6.338/223.32 at NHRA Sanair QC in June for his best speed of the year. He also ran 221.67 at the NHRA WWCS Bowling Green event on August 25. Bob qualified #3 with a 6.318/221.23 at the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. A first-round 6.41/218.12 beat alternate Carl Ruth's 6.54/212. But in the semifinals, his 6.40/219.94 lost to Vern Moats' 6.37/218. Photo from 1985 Nationals. |

Notes: Bob qualified #1 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.02. He lasted until the semifinals before his late 6.12 lost to eventual winner Pat Austin's 6.14. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he won. A final round 6.07/228.48 stopped Brad Anderson's 6.13/224. Bob was the first alcohol funny car in the five-second zone with a 5.952 at Englishtown, NJ, on May 7, 1989. His 231.95 mph run would have been a record if he could have backed it up, but a strong headwind prevented that. He ran several 6.0s elsewhere before getting the record at Englishtown. Did Bob run quicker (5.90) later this year? | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Newberry qualified #1 with a 6.098/229.01. Newberry Defeated Tony Bogolo (the Alternate for #16 Qualifier Steve Litton), in Round 1 6.181/226.13 to 6.522/205.01, 6.565/221.13 over a Red lighting #9 Qualifier Phil Sebring in round 2, & a 6.249/226.13 over a red lighting #5 Qualifier Ronnie Midyette's 6.430/227.27 & Defeated #2 Qualifier Greg Moss in the Final 6.252/225 to 6.395/217.92. | He ran 6.067/229.18 at NHRA Indianapolis. Notes: John was at Englishtown on May 5 for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. A 6.68/209.79 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and a 6.84/205.47 beat John Samolyk. Unfortunately, he broke in the semifinals against eventual winner Bob Newberry. He did not go to the second Division 1 race in Canada, but he was at Maryland International for the third Division 1 race. There, he qualified #3 with a 6.671/207.13. A 6.77/205.94 advanced past Tod Mack, who broke, but in the semifinals, his 6.74/205.01 lost to Newberry's 6.45/217. On September 29, he was at Moroso Motorsports Park for the final NHRA Division Two race. His 6.78/210.77 qualified #3, and he improved to 6.67/208.81 in the opening round to beat John Lukens. In the semifinal, his 6.69/208.81 fell to Terry Mullins' quick-leaving 6.76/184. John was the runner-up to Bunny Burkett at the Delmar King of Kings event with a 7.08/210. At the KMart/Polaroid US All Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown 9/22/85, John ran Bunny Burkett in Round 1 where John ran 6.58/208.33 to Bunny's losing 6.67/211.26. Then, in the consolation round, he raced Tod Mack. Tod ran his best of the day at 6.81/214.28 but lost to John's 6.55/213.52. If anyone knows any better numbers for John in 1985, it would be appreciated. - Rob McCabe |

Notes: Paton was at Warner Robins for the rain-delayed NHRA Division Two race in the first week of April. Only six cars showed, and his 6.90/206.42 qualified #5. He improved to 6.62/207.85 to beat Bogie Kell's quicker 6.57/210 in the first round, and he got a "gift" in the semi-final when Terry Mullins fouled against him. Barry advanced with a 6.64/206.89. He faced low qualifier Steve Group in the final, and Steve fell off to 7.04/213 while Paton ran 6.75/205.94 for the victory. Barry qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.25/195.39. He improved to 6.92/198.85 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough to beat Dan Nimmo's 6.65/207. He also qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field at the NHRA Grandnationals with a 6.581/207.46. In the first round, his 7.05/148.66 lost to Dennis Bedrosian's 6.48/217. |
