Notes: This was a strong runner in '87. Mike started the season at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 7 Opener on January 18 (NHRA D7 Phoenix AZ 1/18/87). He qualified #1 with a 6.31 (Low ET) at 217.39 which was almost two tenths ahead of the #2 qualifier. Unfortunately, in round one, he slowed to a 6.40/215.82 while his competition Pat Austin picked up to a 6.38/216 to beat him. At the NHRA Winternationals, he again set Low ET in running a 6.251 at 221.56 to qualify first. He beat Chuck Beal's 6.40/217 in the first round, with a 6.33/221.45. In round two his 6.43/219.40 took out Terry Mullins, but in the semifinals, Mike's off-pace 6.64/215.00 lost to Pat Austin's 6.33/220. On April 11, Grieco won over an eight-car field at Firebird for the Coors Funny Car event. Of course, he again qualified #1 with a 6.33 (Low ET). Another 6.33/214.79 in the first round, advanced and in the semifinals, his 6.40/214.79 beat Tony Lewis' Camaro. In the final he was up against Brad Anderson and Mike's 6.39/215.31 beat Brad's 6.45/213. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at the second NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont on April 26. Mike beat John Weaver with a 6.40/216.86 in the first round, but in round two he encountered severe tire shake and lost control. He crashed hard into the guardrail, and he had to be treated for a concussion and minor hand injuries. The car was badly damaged. |

Notes: At the NHRA Gatornationals, Group qualified #2 in the 16 car field with a 6.336/218.12. In Round 1 he faced #10 Qualifier Terry Mullins where he would lose. | On May 17, 1985, Steve won at D3 WWCS at IRP over Randy Henning. He ran 6.44/213.27 for the number one qualifier, then ran 6.49/212.26 in the final. Randy ran an off pace 8.00. - Al Tracy | Steve was at Quaker City Dragway early in June for the third NHRA Division Three race. His 6.56/208.87 qualified second to Fred Mandoline's 6.51/212. These two raced their way into the final. Steve started by running 6.53/211.26 to advance when Don DeFluiter crossed the centerline. In the semi-final, he ran another 6.53 at 212.26 to defeat Gary Cellone's 6.68/184. Both Fred and Steve were running really well, and in the final, both ran their best ETs of the weekend. Mandoline's 6.42/214 got the victory over Group's 6.50/213.77 runner-up effort. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, he ran 6.43/218.97 to qualify #4. A 6.53/210.77 in the opening round beat alternate,Gregg Gorman. In round two,he beat Dan Nimmo's 6.66/208 with a 6.55/208.04. Things went really bad in his semi-final race against Pat Austin. The car got out of shape after leaving the line. Steve got out of it, thinking that the car would straighten itself out. Instead, it crossed lanes and smacked into the guardrail. He hadn't known that it had kicked out a couple of rods, and he was skating in his own oil. The car was badly damaged, but he was OK. |

Notes: It was unusual to see Clayton Harris behind the wheel of this alcohol FC after spending years behind the wheel of a TF dragster. And to tell the truth, the car was not very competitive. He was at Warner Robins for the rain-delayed NHRA Division Two race in the first week of April. His 6.91/197.80 was the slowest qualifier on the six cars that showed. He improved to 6.79/207.37 in the first round, but it was not enough, as he lost to Terry Mullins' 6.68/209. He was at DeSoto Memorial in May for the next NHRA Division Two race. His 6.98/193.96 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bogie Kell. Harris' 7.01/192.71 fell to Kell's 6.64/212. He was at Beech Bend early in June for the NHRA Sportsnationals, where his 7.24/191.08 ended up as the seventh alternate for the sixteen-car field. Notes: Hank was in Seattle in August for the NHRA Division Six race. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.71 qualified #7. Unfortunately, the car broke against alternate Roger Bateman in the opening round of competition. He was at Fremont for its independent Golden Gate Nationals, where his 6.40 qualified #4. In the first round, his 6.49/218.44 beat Don Moffitt. Johnson cut a good light in the second round that saw his 6.51/217.91 defeat Mike Grieco's quicker and faster 6.49/218. He suffered from bad tire shake in the semi-final and shut off against Mike Andreotti. | Hank qualified #9 at the NHRA Winston Finals with a 6.446/218.55. He would draw the #1 Qualifier Steve McGee in round 1. Unfortunately, Johnson's 6.656/212.76 was no match for McGee's 6.382/221.23. | Photo from 1984. |

Fred would Run at Bowling Green a couple weeks later where he set Low ET with 6.42, but finished runner up to Bob Newberry 6.44/221.67 to Mandoline's quicker but losing 6.43/218.92. Mandoline would qualify #11 at the US Nationals with a 6.429/219.61. He would defeat #3 qualifier Charlie Byers on a holeshot in Round 1 6.436/218.97 to Byers's 6.432/220.15. Unfortunately Mandoline red lighted away a 6.456 against #15 qualifier Fred Hagen. At The NHRA Winston Finals in Pomona, Mandoline qualified #3 with a 6.334/223.32. He defeated #11 qualifier Chuck Phelps in round 1 6.591/218.97 to 6.745/215.52. But would lose in Round 2 to #7 qualifier Bucky Austin with a 6.411/222 losing effort to Bucky's 6.366/218.65. |

Notes: Manzo debuted his new Bob Jinkens-built Firebird Trans Am at Englishtown on April 14 for the Spring Funny Car Bonanza race. It was an eight-car show, and the new car performed well, setting Low ET at 6.65 before breaking while winning his semifinal race over Dennis Bedrosian. The following week (April 21), he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.54/214.59 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round and shut off to a 7.57 loss to Terry Mullins, who advanced with a 6.75. He almost won the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 5. There Manzo had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.43/220.31. He made his way to the final by running 6.62/218.18 over Dick Bell in round one, while a 6.55/218.97 beat a fouling Carol Burkett in the semifinals. His final-round opponent was Bob Newberry. The two put on a great race, but Bob's 6.49/216 got the victory over Frank's 6.53/217.64 runner-up effort. He then went to Maple Grove for the Spring Funny Car Nationals. The race was run with all eight cars making a run against each other, with the four lowest ETs advancing to the semifinals. Manzo's 6.41 at a track record 218.97 was the quickest of the eight. He ran the identical numbers in his semifinal race over Pat Walsh and then went on to win by running 6.37 (Low ET) at another new track speed record of 219.51. He then went to Atco for a best of three match race against Newberry. It wasn't his day as in the first race, his 6.68/215.82 lost to Bob's 6.60/214, and in the second race, he smoked the tires to a 6.94/187.11 that lost the race and the match to Newberry's 6.73. On June 2, Manzo went to Beech Bend Raceway for the NHRA Sportsnationals. A 6.47/217.70 qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field. But Frank was unable to run in eliminations and was replaced in the field by first alternate Pat Austin. | At the NHRA Molson Grandnational in Sanair Frank qualified #3 for the 8 car field with a 6.343/226.70. In round 1 he faced #7 qualifier Arnie Karp & Manzo ran 6.444/221.02 to Karp's losing 6.587/211.96. In the Semis, "Ace" ran #1 Qualifier Bob Newberry, Manzo ran 6.426/222 in his losing effort to the eventual winner Newberry's 6.338/221.45. At the next NHRA National Event, the Budweiser Summernationals at Englishtown, Manzo qualified #2 for the 16 car field with a 6.328/221.89. He would defeat #10 qualfier Carl Ruth in round 1 6.365/221.13 to Ruth's losing 6.63/212.76. #6 qualifier John Samolyk in Round 2 with a 6.504/216.45 & #4 Qualifier Carol Henson in the Semis with a 6.518/216.03 to Henson's losing 6.685/215.31. In the final, Once again he would Face Bob Newberry the #3 qualifier. Manzo would win the event with a 6.417/217.91 to Newberry's 6.478/216.03 but was overshadowed by Newberry's car becoming a blazing inferno in the shutdown. | He was the second alternate at Indy for the NHRA U.S.Nationals with a 6.50/215.82 best. Frank won the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. It wasn't apparent that he would win when he qualified last in the eight-car field with a 6.39/220. He advanced past the first round with a 6.75 when Arnie Karp crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, he stepped up to a 6.34/221.56 over Gary Cellone's 6.41/216. In the final, he won easily with a 6.39/221.13 when final round opponent Vern Moats broke. |
