Notes: Died at Indy when he hit the guardrail at 169.49 mph. Confirmed 8.24 at Lakeland and 169.49 at Indy in 1967. Drag World's August 25 issue claimed bests of 8.21/170. 1967 (Drag World 8/25/67); Heinelt had been touring the country with Coleman's Holman & Moody-prepared injected Mustang funny car since at least late May. Some newspapers reported that Heinelt died driving a supercharged Mustang funny car at Indy so it is unclear what car he was driving when he had his fatal crash. Notes: Had wire wheels, mag rear wheels, ran 134. The car was originally built with a 1926 T roadster body by Paul Schiefer; the body was switched to a 1927 T roadster with a cut cowl, custom hood and pan, and nose probably made by Eddie Kuzma. In first '27 T configuration, ran 59AB Merc motor with 3-spd top loader, Ford banjo with frontend quick-change, Chrysler wavy axle, '32 wires in rear and '35 wires in front, Pounden mag; fuel was pure alcohol. Later on, Pounden was replaced with Eddie Meyer mag, and front wires were replaced with motorcycle wires; rear wires were replaced with 18-inch Halibrand Indy knockoff mags. The first car to use motorcycle wires on the dry lakes and dragstrips. On April 24, the "Bean Bandits" ran one of the most outstanding speeds of the year at 142.95. Notes: The Bean Bandits fielded two really fast cars in 1956. One was a very fast roadster, and the other was this A/FD. Both of them appeared on Southern California drag strips about mid-year. One of the first outings of this fuel dragster was at Paradise Mesa on May 6, where it got Top Eliminator and clocked 131.52 mph. With that promising start, they towed it to Minter Field Air Base, north of Bakersfield, for a 2-day event on May 12/13 at what was called the California National Championships. It was the first-night drag race held in California. They ran 129.03 mph but were beaten in the second round of eliminations by Aubry Hilton. On July 15, they tried out an Ardun-Merc motor for the first time at Paradise Mesa in the dragster. Carlos Ramirez drove the car to a Top Eliminator victory, beating Ted Cyr with a 135.95 mph clocking. They won A/FD class at Paradise Mesa again at a 2-day event on Aug. 4/5 with the Ardun-Merc motor at 137.95 mph. The Ardun-Merc experiment was short-lived. They put the Chrysler motor, with an eight-carb set-up, back in for the race at Paradise Mesa on Sep. 23. They turned 142.18 mph for a new A/FD track record. Their fastest time came at the end of the year at Lions, with Andrew Ortega doing the driving. He won the A/FD class with a fast 143.76 mph run and took Top Eliminator, beating Fritz Voigt in the finals with a 10.14 at 137.19 mph run. Photo: Long Beach Press-Telegram, Aug. 31, 1956 - MB

Notes: Dave qualified #20 at the AHRA Winternationals. His 7.50/200.33 in the first round lost to Mike Snively's 7.17/214. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Things went well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He reached the final of the 32-car show by beating Bobby Hightower in the first round with a 7.03/199.55. He took out Tommy Allen in round two and a 6.98/212.76 put Gary Cochran on the trailer in round three. Both he and Steve Carbone ran 6.96 (Dave at 213.87) in the semifinals, but Babler got the win. He faced "Fireman" Jim Dunn in the final, and his 7.00/214.38 finished runner-up to Dunn's 6.94/215. On March 16, he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships, where he qualified #17 in the 32-car field with a 7.08. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jack Mitchell. Dave slowed to 7.29/216.86 in their race and lost to Mitchell's 7.07/221.; Photo: Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters website - MB | Les Green was at least one of the owners.

Notes: This team was a mainstay at Lions. They didn't travel very far, preferring to stay close to their home base. Bivens and Fisher were at Lions on April 9 for an eight-car show. They qualified but lost to eventual winner John Mulligan in the first round. The team was back at Lions for another eight-car show at the end of the month. Jerry's 8.57/133.13 qualified last, and once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Gary Gabelich. On June 4, Bivens was at Lions again, where his 8.23/183.28 qualified last for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he lost in round one. The following week (June 11), the team was back at Lions for another one of its weekly events. An 8.95 qualified on the "bump," and Ron Rivero beat him in the opening round. The team traveled to Riverside for the HRM Championships on June 19. Bivens ran 7.67/202.24 to qualify #17 for the 32-car field. However, the team's first-round luck didn't change, as Bivens lost to Connie Swingle. The team continued to frequent Lions, and on August 16, Bivens 8.09 qualified #4. Eventual winner Hank Clark beat him in the first round. But back at Lions the following week, Bivens got past the first round when he ran 7.46/198.00 to defeat Ray Ayers. He went up against Jess Sturgeon in the semifinal, and it looked like he had the win until his engine let go. His 7.88 lost to Sturgeon's 7.78. Another first-round win came at Lions early in September. His 7.61/201.34 beat Leland Kolb's 7.63/211. In the semifinal, he ran an excellent 7.37/204.08 but lost a close one to Bob Muravez's 7.38/209. Jerry was at Lions for a UDRA Meet on October 8. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified with a 7.47/193.96. His 7.52/182 beat Paul Sutherland in the opening round, but he lost to Dave Beebe in round two. On October 22, he was at Irwindale for its Grand Prix race. This was a 32-car field, and he ran 7.46/201.34 in the opening round to beat Larry Faust. In the second round, his 7.53/205 lost to Tommy Allen's 7.39/196.; Photo: "Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters" website - MB

Notes: Bradley won at San Fernando on February 10. His final round 137.82 beat Ted Worobieff's Chrysler. Flathead Injected, Won 26 T E. races.; John Bradley, called "Mr. Flathead" because he drove the "World's Fastest Flathead Dragster," drove primarily in fuel classes but occasionally ran on gas in his new dragster in '57. He also ran both with and without a blower. When he ran with a blower, it upped him into an OHV category. Like in '56, he took many TE victories in '57. He also raced at more distant strips than he had done in 1956, e.g., Bakersfield, Half Moon Bay, and at Cordova's World Series of Drag Racing event in Illinois in Aug. At that distant event, he set a new record for flathead dragsters on the opening day of 147.30 mph. On the second day, he broke that record with 147.54 mph. In the latter part of the year, he set a world record for flathead dragsters at Bakersfield of 9.51 at 147.54 mph. On September 8, running on gas at San Fernando, he took Top Eliminator with 10.91 at 124.48 mph. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB

Notes: On various occasions and for different reasons, Bradley ran in several different classes, including B/D, B/FD, and D/FD, but mainly in A/FD. As in his previous three seasons, he was a frequent Top Eliminator and class winner. As he did in the previous season, he towed his dragster to even more different and far away strips. He ran at Bakersfield, Holtville, Half Moon Bay, and the World Series of Drag Racing event at Cordova, Illinois, for a second year. But mostly, he raced at Colton, his home track. At Colton on Feb. 23, he took TE and twice tied his world record for flathead dragsters with 147.54 mph. He also set a new track record at that race with 9.87. On Dec. 21 at Colton, he set a B/FD world record with a 9.90 clocking. At Cordova, he set a new world record for flathead dragsters of 151.26 mph with a 9.86 time. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB

Notes: Flathead Injected, Won 26 T E. races.; Bradley had an offer in late 1958 from a Kansas racer to purchase his dragster, but that offer fell through, so Bradley continued racing the flathead dragster on into 1959. He primarily raced in C/FD during the season, but he also ran it in D/FD at Pomona. He was plagued by a string of blown engines in the first half of the season. When he got that problem resolved, he started on a string of TE victories at Colton that lasted for fourteen straight victories. In late August, Colton began experimenting with 3/16th-mile drag racing, continuing that into November. On Sep. 7, Bradley set a world record for 3/16th-mile with a time of 8.05. He broke that record on Nov. 15 with a clocking of 8.00. He switched out his flathead Merc for a Chrysler engine in late November. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB

Notes: While the Chrysler Hemi was becoming the dominant engine of choice for the TF dragsters, there was still quite a few holdouts. A lot of small block Chevy-powered cars continued to give the Hemi's fits and there was still some strong Olds powered cars running. Ford seemed to have the short end of the stick. Marvin Schwartz was running his 500 inch Ford and Earl Canavan choose a big inch Lincoln powerplant. Canavan qualified for an eight-car show at Lions on February 9. In the first round, the torque from the big Lincoln engine proved to much for the brakes to hold and he fouled against Steve Porter's Olds powered car.Earl qualified #3 with an 8.32/177.86 at an eight-car show at Lions on March 15. He beat the Duke Bros. in the first round with an 8.58/170.45. In the semifinals, he beat Zane Schubert's 8.62/185 with an 8.25/170.45. He was to face James Warren's Chev-powered car in the final, but the Lincoln broke, giving Warren a single for the win. He was at another eight-car show at Lions on April 4. Canavan ran an 8.22 to qualify #2. He beat Roger Wolford in the first round, with an 8.30/166.66. There were no semifinals run because Larry Faust and Schubert both broke so the final was set between George Bolthoff and Earl. George won the race with an 8.23. He ran at the UDRA Fuel Meet at Lions on May 17 and an 8.20 qualified #10. He soloed in the first round, with an 8.89/146.34, but he lost in round two. Earl made another final-round showing at Lions on May 23. In the first round of the eight-car show, he beat Wolford with an 8.54/175.09. In the semifinals, he caught Paul Sutherland sleeping and beat Paul's 8.11/193 with an 8.63/174.75. A final round 8.54/173.74 lost to Schubert's 8.13/187. Earl was at Woodburn on September 26 for a best-of-three-match race against Bob Haines. Canavan fouled in the first race, but in the second, his 8.28/181.10 won when Haines fouled. Unfortunately, he lost in the final race to Bob.; Photo: Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters website - MB

Notes: In the latter half of 1958, Bill switched bodies from a '34 Ford coupe to the '48 Fiat Topolino body. Films taken by Jnaki show him running the Fiat body at Lions and Riverside in January 1959. At the Jan. 25 race at Pomona, he mounted a new Chassis Research coupe chassis in the car. At that stage, the top of the Fiat had also not been chopped but was chopped later. He was running the torque converter with the same blown engine setup he had in 1958. The car was not too quick with a torque converter off the line, but it made tremendous pull at the top end. Everyone who heard the car stated how loud it was, too. At the Jan. 25 race at Pomona, Coburn obliterated the old strip A/CC record with a clocking of 9.60 at 150.00 mph. After winning his class, Coburn turned over the driving duties to Frank Cannon for the eliminations. Cannon lost to Gary Cagle in the top fuel eliminator finals. At Riverside on Aug. 9, the Coburn Glaze coupe took top eliminator and set a new top time of 157.95 mph in 9.50 seconds on straight alcohol. They ran over 150 mph all day long. At Riverside on Sep. 7, the newly painted A/CC won its class with a low ET of 9.31 and a top speed of 166.35 mph. The times were good for a new national Drag News 1320 record. On Oct. 3 at Colton, the coupe ran 141.50 mph for a 3/16th-mile race. However, they blew a head gasket and couldn't compete against the Leffler-Loukas coupe from Ohio. On Dec. 6 at Pomona, Glenn Coburn did the driving for his father. They ran in A/FD instead of A/CC, winning top fuel eliminator with an ET of 9.28 and 158 mph. Notes: Dave was released from the Army in June, and he wasted no time before jumping back behind the wheel of a Top Fueler. He ran as quick as 7.15/220 after making about six passes in the "Beaver Brothers" car. On June 7, he was at Lions for an eight-car show. A 7.23/211.26 qualified #5, but an off-pace 7.67/174.75 lost to Gerry Glenn's 6.80/199 in the first round.; Photo: "Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters" website - MB | Ran 6.85 at Irwindale.
