Notes: Curry built the 1,400-pound dragster in 1958, using a '56 Olds engine with four 2-barrel carburetors from his '32 Ford street roadster. He ran it for the first time at Chester Drag Strip on Aug. 30. He took top eliminator honors the first time out, beating Dessie Durden with a top speed of 123.28 mph. On Sep. 21 at Chester, he won the B/D class with 118.42 mph. He also took top eliminator with and top speed with 123.28 mph. On Sep. 27 at Chester, he repeated as top eliminator with a best speed of 125.00 mph. He beat the Hyman-Easterby Cad-engined dragster, which also had a best speed of 125.00 mph. At the Jaycee Drag Strip at Greer, he won B/D class and took the night's top speed of 103.45 mph. Greer's track had a short shutdown distance, thus the slower speed. At Chester on Nov. 27, he clocked 125 mph. Photo: Greenville News, June 5, 1959 -- MB |

Notes: Curry, a parking meter inspector for the city of Greenville, continued his winning ways in 1959 with his B/D, running his '56 Olds engine with four 2-barrel carburetors. On Mar. 1 at the Fairburn Drag Strip in Georgia, he won top eliminator, B/D class, and low ET with 12.41 at 119.84 mph. On Apr. 2, at the drag races held at the Greenville-Pickens Speedway, he won the A/G class with a speed of 48.8 mph. At Chester Drag Strip on Apr. 4, he got the meet's top time with 123.28 mph but lost the B/D class to Robin Koury. At Chester on May 2, he won top eliminator and B/D class honors with a best speed of 121.00 mph. He nosed out Henry Easterby's dragster for the top eliminator win. At Chester on June 20, at the race when Don Garlits was seriously burned, Curry took the top eliminator with 123 mph. At Chester on July 3, he had the fastest clocking among B gas dragsters with 123.19 mph. On July 4, he was upset in the B/D class runs by Ford Cox of Columbia, SC. On July 25 at Greer Drag Strip, he took top eliminator and a B/D win with 115.92 mph. In mid-August, he set a new Greer strip record of 126 mph. On Sep. 12, he broke his old mark at Greer with a 132.35 mph run. The following week at Greer, he got the meet's top speed with 128.57 mph but lost to Jim Barbee's Chevy dragster in the top eliminator finals. On Nov. 7 at Greer, he took a top eliminator win with 130.43 mph. He blew his engine at the Nov. 26-28 Internationals at Chester. Photo: Rock Hill Herald, July 3, 1959 -- MB |

Notes: Curry was without a motor after blowing his Olds engine at a 3-day ITA race at Chester in November 1959. Ronnie Hopkins of Greenville had a blown Chevy motor, so the two teamed up to run as a team in 1960. As Curry said, "He had the engine, and I had the car." Curry took his newly finished gas dragster to Chester for a shakedown run in early June, clocking 126 mph. On June 11, he set a new track record and racked up a top eliminator win with 134.32 mph. At the Southeastern Divisional Championships at Palmetto Raceway, he won top eliminator in an upset victory with a best speed of 143.66 mph and 10.79 clocking. In early July, he ran 9.83 at 150 mph at Chester. On July 3, Ronnie Hopkins took an A/D class win and top eliminator at the 2-day races at Augusta International Speedway in their dragster. The next day, they towed the dragster back to South Carolina, where Curry took a top eliminator win at Palmetto Raceway, beating Hoyt Grimes with a quicker 10.13 to Grimes' slower 10.31. Curry set a new track record with 146.47 mph. At the Southeastern Championship races at Greer on July 30, Curry lost to Hoyt Grimes in the early rounds of top eliminator. On Aug. 7 Curry won top eliminator at Chester, clocking 142.85 mph. At Palmetto Raceway on Aug. 13, he lost to Jim Collier's Olds-powered dragster in the top eliminator finals. He won the A/D class with 141.28 mph. He raced at the Nationals at Detroit in September. He finished third in the A/D class, turning a best of 9.9 at 145 mph. After returning from Detroit, he set a new track record at Greer Drag Strip of 136.36 mph. On Sep. 24, he set another new track record of 140.62 mph. On Nov. 24 at Palmetto, he took top eliminator honors with 140 mph. Photo: "Chester Drag Strip," p. 3, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: Although not named as such in any lettering on the cowl, this was effectively Swamp Rat I, the first of his numerous fuel dragsters. As Garlits told me in a 2022 telephone interview, "I went to the junkyard and got a set of '31 Chevy frame rails and built Swamp Rat 1." He built the dragster in his garage. He raced it at Prospect Field in Fort Lauderdale on Mar. 31, clocking 144 mph. On Apr. 7 at Kissimmee Airfield, he ran 10.87 at 137.405 mph. These early season runs were times of experimentation with different blends of nitro and alcohol. He was doing well locally but wanted to see how he would do against stronger competition, so in the latter part of August, he towed his dragster to Cordova, Illinois, for the ATAA World Series of Drag Racing. He was in awe of some of the racers he had read about, including Emery Cook, Setto Postoian, and Fisher & Greth. There, he got some important advice from Emery Cook on making his car go faster. Cook told him to use a heavy dose of nitro, not the 25 percent load that he had been using. He made some modifications in the carburetion to accept the heavier loads of nitro, and the results were more than he could have hoped for. He beat Cook & Bedwell in the third round of top fuel eliminations, clocking an impressive 9.02 at 150.21 mph. He lost to Serop Postoian in the top fuel eliminator finals. His best speed clocking of the meet was 154 mph. He returned to Florida full of confidence. On Sep. 2 at Buckingham Field in Fort Myers, he was runner-up in top eliminator to Dennis Hess at the Southwest Florida Championships. At Kissimmee Airfield on Nov. 3, he set a new track record with 9.95 at 156.52 mph. The following week, on Nov. 10 at Brooksville Airport, he put his name in the record books with a world record of 8.79 at 176.40 mph. With that run, endorsements, sponsorships, and manufacturers' equipment began to flow his way. It was a heady time for him. He towed his dragster to Chester Airport in South Carolina for a 2-day ITA race. On the first day, Nov. 28, on a wet track, he made a time trial run, clocking 155.40 mph. The next day, he set a new track record with 160.71 mph. He won top eliminator with a best run of 8.95 at 170.71 mph. He finished the year at Kissimmee Airfield on Dec. 15, setting a new track record with a run of 167.405 mph in 9.42 seconds. He took runner-up to Floyd Allbritton when his axle broke. At Chester on Nov. 2, he got top eliminator with a best speed of 107.14 mph. On Nov. 9 at Chester, Behling shared the top time with Dessie Durden's dragster, both clocking 121.62 mph.
