Notes: Took Top Gas (AA/GD) trophy at the June 1970 Springnationals (Dallas). Qualified at 7.49; the final run was 7.57/201.70. - RT | The 7.08/212.26 times from this twice-motored car were registered early in Top Gas eliminations at Indy. With many anticipating the first six-second run on gas, Motes' opportunity disappeared when a between-rounds engine thrash left a magneto accidentally installed backward. Jack "Mr. Leave" Jones took the eventual class win. - RT | Number two qualifier at Ontario 11/21/70 at 7.396/204.08. | 1970 NHRA Top Gas world champ. | Ray showed up in R.C. Williams's car at Cornhusker Raceway on May 31. Rain interrupted the race, but not before Moats had made two runs, one at 203.61 and the other at 201.79. At this time, the AA/D record was 200.67 & 204.54.; Photo: Hot Rod Archive Series, no. 6, Hemi Power (Winter 2007), p. 22 - MB |

Notes: After a couple of seasons campaigning an old Allison-powered Green Monster car he'd purchased from the Arfons brothers, Pendleton built this winged 128", 2400-lb slingshot rail, which he began campaigning in May 1961. The 1,710-cube Allison-powered rail was notable for the pair of four-foot airfoils (wings) that flanked the engine and provided top-end downforce. It was reportedly run through 1963. The car was described in a four-page feature in the 11/62 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. - RT | Pendleton added a rocket to the car. Put a driver in it. A young guy. The car crashed at Gary, US 30, killing the driver. Phil Engledrum put the crash photos on the cover of a magazine.; Detachable wings were added to the car instead of ballast to hold the rear of the car down at high speeds. Howard Wysong was killed driving this dragster in 1963 at Gary, IN. Popular Hot Rodding, Nov. 1962, p. 44/47,70-71 - MB |

Notes: Little Chevy was called the Giant Killer after it almost beat the Allison-powered Art Arfons machine in a match race. - Richard Tapia; Drag News (7/25/59) reported: "Art Arfons brought the Green Monster to the line to run off with Bob Tapia. Tapia came out first and led all the way. Art started coming on real good, but had to get off it 3 or 4 times and finally shut off completely. Tapia won in 11.02 sets and a speed of 121.31 mph." Notes: Bob Tennant, of Akron, OH fielded the "Lone Ranger, " a 2,100-pound, four-wheel-drive dragster powered by a 773-cubic-inch aircraft engine. - NHRA | This was an Arfons brothers-built vehicle, possibly Green Monster #5 which ran with this powerplant the previous year (1956). GM5 was, nowever RWD, so the NHRA quote regarding 4WD may be inaccurate. The V-12 Ranger V-770, two-thirds the displacement of the Arfons' trademark Allisons, was run inverted - valve covers up - unlike its orientation when installed in WWII-era training aircraft. - RT); Photo: Indianapolis Star, Aug. 25, 1957 - MB |

Notes: Set the first sub 9-second ET record at 8.94 seconds-170 MPH. | Yeiji died November 20, 1959, at Fremont. Eugene LeBlanc (owner/builder) is my uncle (who lives in Glamis, CA). I'm still not sure about the engine configuration. He was racing as a B/F dragster (Lincoln with 8 x 2 barrels) when I was there. My oldest brother helped mix the fuel with my uncle. My other brother thought it was supercharged that day (he was at the track when Yeiji crashed). The only photo I saw shows it as B/F. Contrary to the reported, "the car disintegrated at 150 mph," my brother said the car was still intact after several flips and rolls, except the front end had come off during the crash. Yeiji had no broken bones or apparent outside injuries, but he must have suffered fatal brain damage or maybe a broken neck; the roll cage was bent to one side from a heavy hit. Notes: Jody Austin; In the early part of the season, he ran on gas but then began running on fuel. The engine was still relatively new and getting things sorted out when he raced at Green Valley on Feb. 11. He turned 10.35 at 145.75 mph, just on a check-out run. Two weeks later, at Green Valley (2/26/61), he won the A/A class and middle eliminator with 10.30 at 147.50 mph. Then he towed to Bakersfield for the March Meet, where he established himself as a contender on the national scene. He won the A/A class with 10.25 at 151.33 mph, beating some big names, like Ratican-Jackson-Stearns. Back in Texas, he became an established winner at Green Valley, putting up even bigger numbers and experimenting with running on fuel. At Green Valley, he took wins on Apr. 30 (9.98 at 151.26 mph) and middle eliminator on May 28 (10.13 at 147.95 mph). At Green Valley on July 9, he ran successfully on both gas and fuel. He set a new 1320 national record in A/A on gas with a 9.74 clocking. He also grabbed the middle eliminator clsss running on fuel and won the A/FA class with 9.96 at 148.27 mph. At Green Valley on Nov. 19, he took the A/FA class win and middle eliminator with 10.06 and 160.14 mph. Photo: "Vintage shots from days gone by," p. 3907, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB |

Notes: Though dogged for several years in the mid-Sixties by the fuel roadster of Chicago's Dennison-Arlasky-Knox, Gabby Bleeker and his red (then black) Austin coupe pretty much carried the flag for Midwest fuel altered fans throughout the decade. Author Don Montgomery in "Those Wild Fuel Altereds" reports that Bleeker switched to fuel in 1961. - RT; On May 17 at Cordova, he set a strip record at 10.64 at 135.10 mph. At Cordova's World Series of Drag Racing event on Aug. 23, he won $100 for his A/A win. He set a world record of 134.28 mph at 11.25. Photo: Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Sep. 6, 1959 - MB |
