Notes: The Road Rebels Car Club of San Gabriel started up in 1952. Lots of their members raced at various drag strips throughout Southern California. This Crosley coupe (driver and owner unknown) began racing at San Gabriel in mid-1956 in B Open Gas. Its best showing in that class was 102.35 mph on June 10. It began racing in A Competition Coupe in September, still using the Merc engine. It garnered Top Eliminator at San Gabriel on Sep. 16, clocking 108.64 mph. It steadily improved and got its fastest speed on Oct. 7 with 115.65 mph. Photo: San Bernardino County Sun, July 13, 1956 - MB |

Notes: Several members of the Antiques car club of Colton drag raced, mostly at Morrow Drag Strip. One of their members (unknown) teamed up with Scotty's Muffler Shop in San Bernardino to field this fully-chromed B Altered Coupe with a set of exhaust pipes reminiscent of the Speed Sport roadster. The car took two years to build at a cost of $2,000. Everything except the frame rails, made from aircraft wing struts, was chromed. The engine was a '50 Olds. '32 Ford axle housing, Halibrand quick-change center section, and '39 Lincoln Zephyr gearbox. The car first ran at Colton on Apr. 20, clocking 105.58 mph. On June 28 it set a new track record at Colton of 113.35 mph. The car ran at the 1958 NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City. Photo: Colton Courier, Aug. 14, 1958 (body removed for photo) - MB |

Notes: In early 1956, Garlits raced a few times at MacDill AFB, while later in 1956, he was racing a '55 Chrysler-engined fuel dragster at Brooksville and Buckingham. The caption on this photo stated that he was running a 286 c.i. engine. At a race at MacDill on Apr. 15, he won the dragster class with an 11.51 time. At a June 24 race at MacDill, he turned 11.73 at 109.63 mph. In addition to running his dragster at MacDill, he also ran a '39 Ford in the Modified Coupe category in the over 300 cubic inches class. His best time in the '39 Ford in 1956 was 16.33 on Jan. 22. Photo: Tampa Times, Jan. 26, 1956 - MB |

Notes: After his spectacular 1958 season, setting a world record twice for gas dragsters, Brown raced less frequently in 1959. He began the year at San Fernando on May 3, turning 160.42 mph. It was not accepted as a world record as he got to the track too late to run in eliminations, the requirement for it to be officially recognized. Dick Harryman, from Granada Hills, who built the engine, continued getting even more horsepower out of the motor. On July 5, he took Top Eliminator at San Fernando with a 9.26 at 156 mph. At San Gabriel on July 11, he got Top Speed with 157 mph. Newspapers also reported that he was running a sidewinder dragster in July. He died at Lions on Sep. 12 while testing Ronnie Scrima's dragster. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Bob Davis, just a teenager, built this modified roadster. He was joined in the endeavor by Herbert (first name not known). In its first outing at Colton, he turned 109.35 mph on Mar. 13. Drag News ((4/29/55) reported that he was running a Chrysler at Colton when he turned 116.00 mph. However, all other newspapers (and even Drag News on 5/13/55) said it was a Merc engine. He turned 114.00 mph at Colton on Apr. 24 and 112.00 mph at Pomona on May 8. No other reports of the car were found after his appearance at Pomona. Notes: Russell Job built and drove this '34 Ford full-rendered coupe until Lyle Arizaga joined him in mid-May when they shared driving duties. Job first ran the car at Pomona on Mar. 20, clocking 105.50 mph. On Apr. 3 at Pomona, Job set a new track record with 109.22 mph. Arizaga teamed up with Job in time for the NHRA regional meet at Colton on May 15. The car set a new national record of 114.00 mph, with Arizaga doing the driving. On July 10 at Paradise Mesa, they set a track record at 114.75 mph. They set another track record at Colton on July 23 at 115.68 mph. On Aug. 21, they set a new track record at San Fernando of 113.35 mph. With these successes in California, they took the car to the 1955 Nationals at Great Bend, Kansas. They won their class and set a new national record of 113.06 mph. After that success, Arizaga left the team, and Job ran a couple of meets at Colton in November but couldn't get the car to do more than 105 mph. Notes: In its first outing with the new aluminum fabricated body, the dragster turned 116.5 at Marana Airfield on Jan. 3. On the car's run at Marana, when it turned 120 mph, a 40-mile gust of wind hit the car as it went through the finish, lifting the front end and turning the car sideways. Fortunately, the wide airfield aided Gundy in restoring order. In 1953, the dragster turned 117.5 without the body panels but was prone to fishtailing. Photo: Arizona Daily Star, Jan. 30, 1954 - MB |

Notes: In early 1956, Gundy teamed up with Lyle Fisher in a dragster project, Gundy supplying the motor. But on Apr. 29, he turned 103.10 mph in the '37 Ford in the B Open Gas class. On Dec. 16, Gundy crashed at Davis-Monthan. He was driving the rear-engine "Pink Lady" in B Open Gas for the team of Gundy-Ault-Peterson & Wilde when the sedan went sideways through the traps at 103 mph. He was taken to the hospital but released with a slightly bruised shoulder. In Aug. 1957, Gundy died of a heart attack. The Tucson Timing Association established a Bill Gundy Memorial Race at Davis-Monthan, donating money from the profits to heart research. Photo: Arizona Daily Star, Sep. 11, 1955 - MB |
