Notes: Buddy Sampson partnered with Bill Gundy, of Tucson, in racing this dragster at a Perryville race on Aug. 5. They won the A/D class using an Ardun Merc engine on gas, clocking 109.09 mph. Shortly after, the Merc engine was blown during a race. Sampson then installed a fuel-injected Desoto in time for a race at Davis-Monthan AFB on Oct. 21. He used the Desoto engine at the race at Perryville on Nov. 3. Photo: Just curious (Phx. Hist.), p. 24, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB |

Notes: Sampson replaced Charley Storrr's Olds engine that he ran at the beginning of the 1957 season with a fuel injected Olds engine from Joe Dillon. Dillon joined Sampson and Mudersbach and the dragster had immediate phenomenal success in Sampson's old car. They set a new national record in the A Open Gas class. After the race at Perryville on Apr. 14, they began work on building a completely new dragster that would bring them even more national recognition. Photo: Arizona Republic, Sep. 4, 1955 - MB |

Notes: The team of Sampson, Dillon, and Mudersbach spent three weeks building a completely new dragster after setting a new world record in Sampson's old dragster at Perryville on Apr. 14. Sampson was the driver, Dillon, the engine builder, and Mudersbach built the chassis. They got a brand new '57 Olds engine from Bill Money and spent $1,000 turning it into a racing engine. The new car was ready for its first outing at Perryville on June 2. It set a new A Open Gas national record of 140.61 mph. In its first outing, it broke that record with a run of 141.78 mph. With impressive times, they towed to Long Beach Drag Strip for the Drag News Invitational. They set a new track and world record for unblown dragsters with 10.34 and 141.95 mph. They also copped Top Eliminator at the big event. It seemed that every time they ran, they set new national marks. At Perryville, on July 7, they upped the world record to 145.16 mph. Then, on Aug. 4 at Perryville, they set a new official world record of 147.53 mph. At the 2-day ATAA regional championships at Lions Drag Strip on July 20/21, he set a new national record of 9.935. All this success in the new dragster set them up for even greater success at the NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City in September. They won Top Eliminator at the 1957 NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City over LeRoy Mackey from Corpus Christi, TX, driving an A/MR. They turned 10.42 at 141.50 mph. In addition to the trophies, they won a '57 f.i. Chevy engine, washing machine, and a $350 cam. Buddy Sampson took the Chevy engine and left the trio to go out on his own. In the months after the Nationals win, Dillon and Mudersbach competed with the dragster in Arizona and California. Notes: After the team's win at the NHRA National Championship in Oklahoma City, Buddy Sampson took the '57 Chevy engine prize and left the team. Mudersbach and Dillon shared ownership and driving duties for the rest of the season. They took the car to California and ran at San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip on Oct. 6, clocking 142.18 in B/D for a new track record. They then returned to Arizona for the rest of the season. They ran 138.61 mph at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson in A Open Gas on Oct. 20. Two weeks later, they ran on fuel at Perryville at the 2-day 3rd Annual Championship Drag Meet, clocking 159 mph. On the final day of top fuel eliminations, darkness caused the meet to end before they could make the final run. They split the win with Red Greth. Their final run of the season came at Perryville on Dec. 29 when they took the win in A Open Gas with a 143.5 mph run. Photo: Arizona Republic, June 22, 1957 - MB |

Notes: Dick Stern and Fritz Schmitz shared ownership in this dragster. While in the military service in California, Stern raced around the Southland. He was released from the service before summer. He returned home to Arizona with the dragster. He entered a race at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson on July 15, but blew his engine. The car's best speed while competing in California was 132 mph. Notes: The Arizaga brother did most of their racing in the 1954 season at Colton. On Sep. 26, they set a new track record, won the dragster class and Top Eliminator. In December, they took the engine out of their dragster and put it in Glenn Kindred's So Cal Special dragster. Their track record lasted just a few weeks until broken by Charles Scott's belly tank lakester. Photo: San Bernardino County Sun, Sep. 18, 1954 - MB |

Notes: In December, Glenn Kindred teamed up with Joe and Lyle Arizaga, putting their '47 Mercury flathead engine in his classy dragster. One of their first, if not their first outing, was a disastrous one at Morrow Drag Strip on Dec. 26. Although they won the dragster class, clocking a speed of 123.67 mph, the car flipped over at the end of a run. Kindred was driving, having turned 121.47 mph, when the car hit a boulder at the end of the strip. Kindred sustained only a cut over his eye. They repaired the car in time to resume racing in Feb. 1955. Photo: San Bernardino County Sun, Jan. 23, 1955 - MB |

Notes: After flipping over at the end of a run in Dec. 1954 at Colton, the car was repaired. The car's first outing was at Pomona on Feb. 6, copping Top Eliminator. The following week, again at Pomona, it won the dragster class. It is unclear from newspaper articles if the Arizaga brothers from El Monte were still involved, as their Merc engine was replaced by Alex Xydias's blown Ardun engine at one point in the season. By July, Lyle Arizaga was racing a B/FD, and brother Joe was racing a competition coupe. Photo: Jalopy Journal, H.A.M.B., "Early Drag Racing Photos," June 21, 2021 entry - MB |

Notes: This is the first of three cars that Bloom owned and drove in 1955. They all ran with Buick engines. With a big '40 Buick Century engine, he configured this convertible Crosley so that the driver sat in the rear seat. The second car was a '31 Ford that ran in Open Gas. The third was a Ford Model T roadster that also ran in Open Gas. Photo: Arizona Republic, Feb. 6, 1955 - MB |
