Notes: In his Fiat altered, Grimes repeatedly upped his NHRA national record in A//A. On Mar. 2 at the Casa Grande Airport, Grimes set a new track record in A/C, a new class, clocking 120.32 mph. It was reported in the Arizona Republic (9/2/58) that Grimes did not compete in 1958, undoubtedly meaning that he had others do the driving for him. Lewis Rogers, who drove the car at the 1957 Nationals, was probably the driver in 1958. In April, the Arizona Republic (4/14/58) reported that Rogers was a partner in the car with Grimes. At the Drag News Open on June 8, 1958, at the Chandler Associated Drag Strip, Grimes reportedly installed a supercharger to be more competitive with Californian Glen Ward. Other newspaper reports (Pomona Progress Bulletin, 11/19/54) indicated that its best speeds were just over 126 mph. On Dec. 13, 1953, Duncan's Doodlebug set a track record in C/CC of 121.45 mph. Newspapers recorded him turning 120.16 mph at Pomona on Aug. 22, indicating that he may have been using a supercharger then, as all his other speeds during the year were below 115 mph. Notes: He set a new track record at Pomona on Jan. 23 at 115.23 mph, breaking that record the next month on Feb. 13 with a speed of 115.58 mph. At Colton on Mar. 27, he set a track record in A Fuel Coupe-Sedan class with 115.88 mph. On Apr. 24 at Pomona, he set a track record with 119.20 mph. Almost every time he raced, he set a new track record. At Colton on May 15, he set a track record with 120.32 mph. At Santa Ana on June 19, he got a Coupe Light class win with 120.48 mph.
