Notes: In March, he took Swamp Rat I to Arizona and California, doing well in the former but not performing so well in California. Returning to Florida in April, he stunned the drag racing world with a world record clocking at Brooksville. On June 14, he clocked 8.48 at 182.56 mph at the Southwestern Drag News Invitational at the Freeway Drag Strip in Houston on June 14. A week later, he suffered the fateful engine explosion at Chester, South Carolina, which landed him in the hospital for weeks with second-degree burns to his hands and face. In a hospital interview, he said he would retire from drag racing. "I'm through with drag racing," he said. "I'll never race again." He sold one of his engines but kept the dragster and got Art Malone to drive it for him for the rest of the season. Photo: Lansing State Journal, June 21, 1959 - MB |

Notes: This short wheelbase dragster (92 inches) was originally built to be a gas dragster, but soon after its first outing at Lions with Bill Alexander driving, it switched over to fuel with Tommy Ivo doing driving duties for most of the 1961 season. Bill Alexander took over driving duties for the 1962/63 season. In 1962, the car was ranked #10 in the nation. The dragster turned in its best time at San Fernando on Apr. 7, 1963. On that date it was running against Jeep Hampshire driving Bill Martin's Chevy A/FD for Top Eliminator when the car flipped and was totally destroyed. Bill Alexander survived, but suffered injuries that kept him out of racing for over half a year. Photo: '63 Winternationals - MB |
