Notes: Allen debuted his new Dodge Dart funny car sponsored by Crenshaw Dodge at Irwindale on Jan. 28. That began a season filled with match races against other "experimental stock" racers such as Fred Goeske, Gas Ronda, John Mazmanian, Kip Brundage, and Cecil Yother. He took funny car eliminator wins at OCIR and Irwindale. He also won the funny car eliminator title at what was billed as the North American Fuel and Gas Championships at Puyallup Dragway in Washington on June 15 against a 16-car field. Notes: The Fuel Cuda's Barracuda body was mounted on a conventional "slingshot" dragster chassis (with the driver sitting where the rear window used to be) in the fashion of Garlits' Dart roadster. - RT; A feature article about Grassi's '66 match race "Fuel Cuda" stated it would debut for the very first time on Mar. 25, 1967, at Puyallup Dragway. There is no indication that it ever ran in 1966, as Grassi and Rich Rogers were going to get acquainted with its handling in spring 1967. "It'll take a while to break the car in," said Grassi in mid-March 1967. "The first big factor will be learning the car's handling characteristics." The car was unpainted when it was photographed on Mar. 17, 1967, by Wayne Zimmerman for the Tacoma News Tribune feature article. Photo: Tacoma News Tribune, Mar. 18, 1967 - MB |

Notes: Tom parked the Mustang and the early Setzer car and ran only the 1975 Lindblad car in 1976 and 1977. Tommy used the Setzer name only for bookings. It was Grove's deal. Grove was at Atco in August for its FC Nationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, his 6.68/222.77 lost to eventual winner Tommy Ivo's 6.57/196.; Photo: Hemmings Muscle Machines (May 2007): p. 35 - MB |

Notes: For the 1966 season, this car was lengthened 18 inches and fiberglass front end and doors were added, changing the weight of the car to 3,195 lbs. with a TorqueFlite transmission. Best time for this car was 177 mph and 9.43. | Bob faced Darrell Droke for a best of three match at Detroit. He lost the match to the blown Mustang, but did run a best of 10.19/150.50. The following week (April 24), Sullivan was at Minneapolis to make three exhibition runs. He went up in smoke on all three passes and ran times of 11.12/157.89, 10.77/157.89, and 11.23/150. On June 3, he was at Columbus for a best of three match against Bruce Larson. Sullivan was having magneto problems and it didn't help in the match as Larson got out first in the first two races and won the match despite the Barracuda's better times. Sullivan’s best was 10.02/148.06 compared to Bruce's 10.11/141.; Photo: Hot Rod, Archive Series No. 5, Hemi Power (winter 2007): p. 63 - MB |

Notes: Bob went on to race on the salt flats for years.; It took a while to get things sorted out, but by October, the dual-engined dragster was running more consistently. At Fontana on Oct. 8, Brissette took top gas eliminator with 9.14 at 172.41 mph. The next day at San Fernando, they ran 9.42 at 169.81 mph. A week later, at Lions on Oct. 15, they got a top eliminator victory with a best time of 9.42. They clocked a speed of 177.51 mph, which was better than the existing Drag News 1320 record, but for some reason, even though Drag News reported it was a new record, it wasn't accepted. Notes: Algon-injected 461" Olds in a light 92" owner-built chassis. This car, photographed in late '58, was featured in the March '59 issue of Hot Rod. The article quoted unattributed times of 9.48/150.0. Cheatham was a favorite to take Top Eliminator honors at the '58 NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City but narrowly lost the A/D class semifinal to eventual Top Eliminator Cyr & Hopper. He was killed six months later in a crash at the March Meet at Bakersfield when his rail somersaulted in the traps after striking a marker barrel. - RT Oklahoma City, Okla. 9/58 (NHRA Nationals); Cheatham proved a formidable opponent throughout the season. On Feb. 16 at Kingdon, he ran 145.17 mph. On Apr. 27 at Half Moon Bay, he took TE with 136.36 mph. He set a track record in B Open Gas at Little Bonneville in San Jose of 137 mph on May 4. He turned 134 mph at Half Moon Bay on May 11. On June 1 at Kingdon, he ran 136.88 mph. He took TE at Little Bonneville on June 15 with 135.35 mph. He took another TE victory at Half Moon Bay on July 13 with 141.95 mph. He set another strip record at Little Bonneville and won TE honors with 141.5 mph. On Aug. 10 at Half Moon Bay, he set a world record with 9.56 at 143.31 mph. A week later, at Little Bonneville, he upped the track record to 142.85 mph. On Aug. 24, he set an impressive new world record of 9.48 at a mind-blowing 150.50 mph. Those marks and wins set the stage for a very successful showing at the national championships at Oklahoma City, where he was runner-up in the dragster eliminations to winner Ted Cyr. En route to his second-place finish, he beat Art Arfons' Green Monster, Ralph Gonzalez, and Jack Moss. He registered the second fastest time ever on gas with a 9.3 run. Returning from Oklahoma, he entered a 2-day race on Sep. 6/7 at Camp White in Oregon, clocking 9.97 at 144.46 mph. At Half Moon Bay on Sep. 28, he ran 147.29 mph. On Oct. 12 at Half Moon Bay, he registered another good showing with 9.40. He finished the season with wins at Kingdon in B Open Gas on Nov. 2 with 143.31 mph and Dec. 7 with 9.8 at 145.89 mph. Notes: Paul Nicolini and Harry Duncan sold their temperamental Sidewinder in 1958 to Chuck Jones from Orange, and Joe Mailliard, from Long Beach. They divided the labor, Jones handling the chassis, and Mailliard was the tuner. They got Jack Chrisman to be the driver. One of the first outings was at Santa Ana on Aug 17, where Chrisman turned 9.89 at 147.55 mph. On Sep 20 at Lions, he won Top Eliminator with 9.96 at 149.25 mph. The next day at Santa Ana, he took Top Eliminator with 10.11 at 151,57 mph. On Oct 11 at Lions, he won Top Eliminator with best times of 9.67 at 152.02 mph. Notes: After taking a year off to race karts, Christian returned in July '61 with a new Dragmaster rail. He stayed with Olds, stroking it to 461" and topping it with a GMC blower. Landed a two-page feature spread in the 9/62 Hot Rod. - RT from (8/11/61 National Dragster); Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |
