Notes: Rice ran a hemi and a flathead Mercury in 1955. He ran the first half of the rain-shortened Nationals (Great Bend, Kansas) with the Chrysler and switched back to the flathead for the wrapup two months later in Phoenix. He beat Fritz Voigt in the final. - RT | 1955 NHRA Nationals were originally scheduled for September 29 through October 2 at Great Bend. Finals were rained out there and were completed on November 19/20 at Perryville, Arizona. Rice won over Fritz Voigt. The final Round 10.30 was Low ET. Notes: Like a scaled-up go-kart, this short-wheelbase-1,000-pound car ran a 440 CID Ranger V-440 aircraft engine mounted behind the driver sidewinder-fashion. The Arfons brothers also drove. - RT; Photo: Dick Lippert photo, Fulton entry in Memories (New York) page, Drag Strip List website - MB |
