Notes: Luzader's unchopped, full-fendered, jacked-up Arbor Green 5-window coupe was a popular gas class competitor from the mid-Sixties through the early Seventies. Over the years, the never-changing combo (0.60-over 327 Chev, Hilborn injection, 4-speed) ran variously in C/G, D/G, E/G, and D/A. Luzader's immaculate coupe, as yet unlettered, garnered a two-page feature in the December 1964 issue of Rod & Custom. - RT; Photo: Rodder's Journal, no. 19 (Spring 2002), p. 28 - MB |

Notes: Said to be the first major non-automotive sponsor in drag racing. - BP; On Apr. 8, this car debuted at Pomona as the Armstrong & Williams B/D, with Hal Williams driving. The engine was an Ardun-Merc. On May 6, again at Pomona, Maurice Richer had joined the team, and the Ardun-Merc was replaced with a 341ci Chrysler Hemi. It ran as the Armstrong-Richer & Williams Nesbitt's Orange Special. But after that race, Williams dropped out of the picture. Armstrong and Richer traded driving throughout the '56 season. They both did very well. Armstrong's finest moments included winning Top Eliminator at Pomona at the Chrysler-engined dragster's first outing on May 6. He took Top Eliminator at Pomona in July at the Southern California Championships on July 1. He won Top Eliminator at San Gabriel on July 4. He set a track ET record at San Gabriel on Oct. 7. Notes: Altered wheelbase '30/31 Ford roadster. First injected for the '60 race season, a blower was added to the Olds mill. - RT: The 1765-pound Durfee Auto roadster started the 1959 season painted primer white with an injected Olds motor. They were also sponsored through May by Weber Cams and Durfee Motors, but afterward, their sponsorship came from Durfee Auto. They painted the car light green for the Bakersfield March meet and built a manifold for a GMC 6:71 blower with forward-swooping shop-built port injectors on top. They changed to a 4:11-1 rear end in early July, turning 6500 RPM, with good results. In October, San Gabriel mandated that all cars with superchargers had to run fuel and water injection, which they complied with. They were a staple at San Gabriel Dragway but also appeared at a few other SoCal strips during the season. They were a lock for A/R class wins until the Herman Brothers, Ollie Prather, Scotty's Muffler, and a few other roadsters made for tough competition. Nick Cirino and Frank Groves alternated driving duties. They took A/R class wins at San Gabriel on Jan. 4 (11.40, 123.1 mph), Jan. 11 (11.62, 123.28 mph), Jan. 25 (14.40, 122.95 mph; lost in TE finals with 11.63, 121.68 mph), Feb. 15 (11.57, 121.13 mph), Mar. 8 (12.66, 116.88 mph & Little Eliminator with 12.25, 122.11 mph), Apr. 19 (11.75, 131.15 mph), Apr. 26 (129.12 mph), May 2 (11.10, 133.33 mph), May 9 (11.14, 134.32 mph & Top Eliminator, 11.26, 133.33 mph), May 23 (11.75, 135.54 mph), June 13 (11.28, 137.82 mph), June 27 (11.24, 136.57 mph), July 4 (strip record 10.86, 139.75 mph; Top Eliminator, 11.05, 139.31 mph), July 18 (10.96, 138.67 mph), Aug. 1 (11.04, 139.53 mph), Aug. 22 (10.94, 137.61 mph; Little Eliminator, 11.09, 136.77 mph), Aug. 29 (10.98, 137.61 mph & Little Eliminator), and Oct. 17 (top time 135.93 mph). On Nov. 15 at San Gabriel, they blew the engine during the final round of Middle Eliminator against Larry Herman. That ended the '59 season for them, but they had successes at other strips during the year. At Pomona, they had A/R class wins on Apr. 12 (11.32, 128.20 mph), May 24 (11.32, 135.73 mph & Top Eliminator), and July 5 (10.89, 136.35 mph). At Colton on May 30-31, they won the A/R class with 11.19 at 139.10 mph. On Aug. 23 at San Fernando, they took a class win with 138.24 mph. At Lions on May 3, they won the B/R class with 11.49 at 132.15 mph. At Riverside on May 10, they got a new Drag News 1320 ET record and won the A/R class with 11.11 at 130.05 mph. Notes: The team of Bill Butters and Don Porterfield ran a succession of Deuces (a coupe and a roadster) and dragsters under the Groh's Texaco (Rivera, Calif.) banner throughout the Fifties. I have dated pics of this car running at the second NHRA Nationals (Kansas City, Mo.) in 1956. Unclear whether the roadster ran a flathead or OHV Caddy mill (photos show three pipes per side). - RT; Drag News report of Colton race results (10/19/56) states they ran a Merc. Notes: Butters was at San Gabriel on December 28 with the 341 Chrysler-powered car. He made several high 140 mph runs, with the best being 10.06/148.51. Those times were the best of the meet. He later blew second gear, ran it through with high gear only, and still ran 10.29/146.10. Early Chrysler hemi with Potvin (front-mounted) blower. Bill Butters and Don Porterfield ran a succession of racecars under the Groh's Texaco banner (Rivera, Calif.) throughout the Fifties. Unknown whether this car ran gas or fuel. Butters later partnered with Don Gerard to race dragsters in the Seventies. - RT; Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Hubler and fellow Daytonian Dave Corey were partners in two jet cars; both had driven the Liquidator jet dragster. Hubler was fatally injured in an accident in April 1969 at Kil-Kare Dragway in Xenia, Ohio, while debuting a new Charger body on his jet funny car. (This was formerly the Walt Arfons-built '67 Dodge Dart "The Rebellion," which Hubler campaigned as the "Dart Ram Jet.") On his third run, reportedly at over 200 mph, the car went airborne, rolled, and struck a utility pole. - RT; 1960s page on "Jet, Rocket, and Aircraft-Engined Dragsters: Pioneers of the First Four Decades" website - MB |

Notes: Unlettered, fenderless '36 Willys coupe with 331" early Chrysler and Cad-LaSalle trans; most likely ran in altered class. In a unique attempt to get around parasitic drag and resultant horsepower loss incurred by driving the 6/71 GMC blower off the crankshaft, the owner mounted a separate 60-hp Johnson 4-cylinder 2-stroke engine in the trunk; its only task was to spin the blower. The trunk-mounted huffer provided pressurization to the hemi via a system of ductwork running the length of the car. (We need it to be said that this rather Rube Goldbergian idea never caught on.) The car received a two-page feature treatment in the February '59 issue of Hot Rod. Listed times from (1/59 Hot Rod) - RT; Photo: Earliest Willys Racecars, p. 5, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB |
