Notes: After a couple of seasons campaigning an old Allison-powered Green Monster car he'd purchased from the Arfons brothers, Pendleton built this winged 128", 2400-lb slingshot rail, which he began campaigning in May 1961. The 1,710-cube Allison-powered rail was notable for the pair of four-foot airfoils (wings) that flanked the engine and provided top-end downforce. It was reportedly run through 1963. Unattributed times of 8.92/185.18 were cited in a four-page feature in the 11/62 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. - RT; Photo: George Klass Collection - MB | Confirmed 9.08/174.08 at Lodi CA on 4/29/62 - BP

Notes: This car is today in a private collection in PA. Mazza ran the food concession at New England Dragway. he would make passes in this Turbonique car when things were slow, and the spirit moved him. The Turbonique Drag Axle is not thrust-driven. It is rocket-powered but driven through the rear wheels. - NH; Photo: 1960s page on "Jet, Rocket, and Aircraft-Engined Dragsters: Pioneers of the First Four Decades" website - MB

Notes: Leal had been driving Super Stock 409 Chevies in '62 and '63. For the '64 season, he switched to the Ford Thunderbolt with the 427. While he ran well with the Ford, he saw just how strong the Hemi's were and wanted one for the '65 season. Plymouth was quite happy to have Leal join their team as it got one of its main competitors on its side. Notes: Palamides-owned and built, 2,400-pound car had a one-piece Fiberglas Ltd body and a space frame chassis. Notes: This clapped-out, black-primered Bug was the only exhibition car actually owned by the developer of the legendary Turbonique Supercharger and (more notably) the Turbonique Drag Axle. The latter was a liquid-fuel rocket motor that drove through the diffential and delivered over 850 tire-smoking horses to the rear wheels. The following year this car took flight and rolled up into a ball. The driver survived. - RT; Photo: Hot Rod (Mar. 2004), p. 60 - MB

Notes: Best known for his small block Chevy-powered motorcycles, during the mid-Sixties, Potter also dabbled in four-wheelers. True to form, he was not satisfied with a "normal" dragster. This was one of two cars he built stuffed with WWII-era 1,710-inch Allison V-12 aircraft engines. This mill was service-rated at approximately 1,425 hp at 3,000 rpm but was capable of more when spun to 3,500-4,000 revs. The "already had it, so used it" Plymouth four-door sedan utilized a 400-lb multi-disc tugboat clutch Potter purchased from fellow Allison aficionados Art and Walt Arfons. For his next act, he would stuff this mill into his 1964 Dodge Dart station wagon. - RT; Photo: 1960s page on "Jet, Rocket, and Aircraft-Engined Dragsters: Pioneers of the First Four Decades" website - MB
