Notes: 1963 was a very successful break-out season for the former drag strip stock car pilot. Wenderski teamed up with Ronnie Winkel, who built the 392 Chrysler Hemi. The first outing for the car was at San Fernando on Apr. 21, clocking 8.34 at 185.86 mph. They steadily got better and better as they wracked up Top Eliminator wins at San Fernando, San Gabriel, Lions, and Fontana. That success led to match races and tours to Northern California. At San Fernando on July 7, they set a Drag News 1320 national record with a 193.96 mph at 8.20 clocking. On Aug. 17 at Fontana, they took Top Eliminator with a 193.54 mph and 8.46 time. At Fremont on Oct. 13, he ran 8.12 at 192.70 mph. Later they replaced their own Chrysler with a 392 Chrysler built by Dave Zeuschel, breaking it in a Lions on Dec. 7. The next day at San Fernando, they took Top Eliminator with an 8.05 at 189.06 mph run. - MB; Photo: Hemmings Muscle Machines (May 2008) p.49 -MB |

Notes: Beautiful SPE, Hanna car. Hank won Top Fuel at the '69 NHRA Springnationals in Dallas. Beat Kelly Brown in Lou Baney's Ford in the final round. The first 32-car field in the sixes. Ran 6.97 in this car at the Bakersfield March Meet in 1969. Ran 7.14 at Riverside Hot Rod Magazine Championship. | Don Johnson's "Beachcomber" used an SPE 185" chassis. The dragster used a 392 Hemi built by Ed Pink. It was overbored to just over 400 cubic inches. The stock crank was cross-drilled and balanced by CT Automotive. M/T rods supported Forgedtrue pistons. Pink also did the porting and polishing of the cylinder heads. Racer Brown supplied the cam. An Enderle injection unit sat on top of a Larry Bowers reworked blower, which sat on an Edelbrock manifold. A Cragar blower drive was also used. The rear axle was a Mopar with 3.91 gears. | Hank was in Las Vegas for the Stardust Open on February 16. He beat James Warren in the first round but lost to John Mulligan's track record 6.85 in round two. He beat Don Cook in the first round at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.94/212.26. In round two, he fouled away a 7.12/198.23 against Jim Nicoll. At Riverside on March 16 for the HRM Championships, he qualified #25 in the 32-car show with a 7.14. He improved to a first-round 7.02/215.31 over a fouling Cliff Zink. In the second round, he ran another 7.02 over Jack Mitchell's 7.07. But in round three, he had problems and shut off against Don Prudhomme.; Photo: "Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters" website - MB |

Notes: Jack started the '65 season in this car at Riverside for the KFWB Drag Festival on January 1. He set Low ET of the meet while qualifying #1 with a 7.87/196.06. An 8.16/149.50 advanced past the first-round when Danny Ongais fouled away a 7.99/193 against him. In the semifinals, his 8.13/194.80 beat Rick Stewart's early shut off 8.24/124. He got the win in the final by beating Bob Tapia with a 7.99/195.22. It was a great way to start the new year. The following day, he was at Fontana for the UDRA race held there. Unfortunately, his first-round 8.22/159.29 lost to Kenny Safford's 7.98/194. - RH; Photo: being pushed back after making a qualifying run at 8.23, 184.80 at '65 Hot Rod Magazine Championships, Riverside - MB |

Notes: Ran a disputed 8.99 in March 1954. Before that run, it was assumed that a piston-powered car would never run under 9.06 seconds, a theoretical limit imposed by engineers because it was supposedly impossible to accelerate faster than 1g. Some say the time could have been legit - as Art Chrisman had gone as quick as 9.40 a full year before, but it was discounted as bogus. The fact that it was not bettered for three years added weight to the doubters' argument. NHRA did experiments at Pomona in October 1956 that proved that dragsters did indeed accelerate at more than 1g. We are keeping the 8.99 in the notes instead of in the ET field, not because of the 1g limit, but because the accompanying speed of 144.85 was not fast enough to support an ET quicker than 9.85, even at the most efficient. - Draglist.com; Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: On June 6, Stuart won the NHRA Division Three race at National Trail. His final round, 10.00/137.82, beat Bob Riffle. The following week (June 13), he was at Dallas International for the NHRA Springnationals. An opening-round 9.88 beat Bob Lambeck's 10.13, and a second-round 9.82 put away Herb McCandless' 10.28. But in round three (32-car field), his 9.86 lost to Melvin Yow's 9.84. Although he failed to reach the final, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 9.58 at Milan Dragway for the NHRA Division Three race. Shortly after that, he was at Salem for a best-of-three-match race against Arlen Vanke. In their first race, McDade's 9.95/141 beat the Duster's 10.09. In the second race, the Challenger went into a huge wheelstand that busted the oil pan and kept the car out of further competition. The team's next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 9.61 qualified #3 in the 32-car field, and Start easily handled Dave Strickler in round one. But a blown clutch in round two lost the race to Vanke's 9.76. Stu was the runner-up at Indy Nationals, where the car ran a best of 9.55 (Low ET) on race day. Was #2 qualifier at 9.562/144.23 (Top Speed).; Photo: Hemmings Muscle Machines (Nov. 2007): p. 37 - MB |
