Notes: Nick started the season at Riverside Raceway on January 1 for the KFWB Festival race. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field, but the track set up another eight-car field for the non-qualifiers. Marshall's 8.10/193.94 qualified low for that group. He won his first-round race with an 8.12/198.66 when his opponent, Ron Hampshire, lost fire. He lost in the following round. The next day, he was at Fontana for a sixteen-car show. In the first round, his 7.84/195.22 defeated Wayne King's 8.15/191. But in round two, a 7.90/191.08 fell to Herb Ries' 7.78/196. He was back in Fontana on January 17 for an eight-car show. He beat Jeep Hampshire in the final for the victory. On January 31, Fontana held yet another race. Unfortunately, Nick's 7.94/190.66 in the opening round lost to Bill Leavitt's 7.98/192. Another win came at Fontana on February 14. He had qualified #4 for the sixteen-car field with a 7.80. He won his first-round race with an easy 8.24/190.26. In round two, his 7.83/191.08 beat Bobby Vodnick's 8.09/191. He had another easy pass in the semi-final when his opponent Maynard Rupp failed to fire. He faced Mike Sorokin in the final, the "Surfers" car broke, and Nick's 9.10/118.73 won. In the first week of March, he competed at the big Bakersfield March Meet. A 7.91/195.64 qualified #28 in the 64-car field. Marshall was at Sanford, Maine, on August 22 for a best-of-three match against Dick Roberts in Clyde McKaba's car. Nick came out for a warm-up pass to break in a new set of Goodyears. The car got out of shape, and he took out the lights. There was no damage to the car. In the first round of the match, Dick got a great hole shot, and his 7.85 beat Marshall, who once again had handling problems. After the run, it was discovered that they had a cracked cylinder wall. Another engine was installed, and Nick ran the track's first 200 mph run with a 7.91/200.44. Marshall won Top Fuel at San Fernando on November 7. He also set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.86/206.88.; Photo: "Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters" website - MB |

Notes: Started the year at Pomona for the Jackpot Circuit race on January 23. Thirty-four cars tried for the sixteen spots, and Nick's 7.84/205.94 qualified #7. On February 26, he was at Lions for the UDRA Winternationals, where a 7.73/203.60 qualified #15 in the 32-car field. The team failed to make the finals at these two events but ran well. At Bakersfield for the March Meet, a 7.48/210.76 qualified second, and they improved to a first-round 7.41 but lost their engine while winning and could not run the second round. On March 20, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 7.59 but slept in the first round, losing with a 7.65/203.60 to Ron Goodsell's 7.84/194.80. A big win came at Lions on March 26 over a sixteen-car field. Nick once again qualified second with a 7.69/205.46 but then picked up the pace to run 7.64/205.46 over Zane Schubert and a 7.51/204.08 over Larry Faust in round two. Another 7.51 at 206.88 in the semifinals advanced them into the finals against Dave Beebe. Nick ran a track record 7.41 at 199.10 to turn back Dave's 7.68/191 for the money. They were back at Lions on April 18 for an eight-car show where a 7.75/203.16 qualified #5. Unfortunately, Nick fouled in the first round against low qualifier John Mulligan. Irwindale held a sixteen-car show on April 23, and Nick qualified second with a 7.79. He advanced past a fouling Tommy Allen in the first round but blew his motor and could not run in round two. Top Speed at Indy 1966 at 218.46 (7.52). Second-fastest qualifier at the '66 Bakersfield Fuel & Gas Meet. Also, 7.73/203.60 at Lions 2/01/66, and 210.76 at Bakersfield 3/66. Also, did the team run 7.205 this year? They ran 7.73 at Lions UDRA and 8.06 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals Championships. Photo: "Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters" website - MB |

Notes: The car was named after his son. 8.21 for this year, but that seemed way too quick. We need to confirm if Setto even ran that time in 1960, his last year of competition.; Drag News (9/5/59) reported that Postoian ran 182.92 mph, backed up with 179.83 mph to set a new Drag News 1320 world record, but Garlits broke that at the same event with 183.66 mph. The 182.92 mph speed was also reported in the Portland Maine Evening Express on 8/24/59. Photo: Moline Dispatch, Aug. 26, 1959 - MB |

Notes: Real name Serrop Postoian. A crash in Detroit in July 1960 ended his driving career. The crash was thought to be caused by the Mark 3 dragster's new wire front wheels. We originally had times of 8.21/182.92 listed in 1959. That was way too quick for that year and probably too quick for 1960. We need confirmation of Setto's best times. Setto was the person who first called Don Garlits the Swamp Rat. The 'gofer' on Setto's team: Connie Kalitta.; At Detroit Dragway on May 22, he ran 9.72 at 182 mph. A month later, he ran 9.01 at 182.54 mph at Detroit before blowing his clutch. On July 3 at Detroit, he ran 9.04 at 183.28 mph. The next day in Detroit, he veered off the strip into a ditch, going 150 mph, destroying the car and breaking his left arm. That ended his racing days. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: On July 2, "Powers & Riley" were at Martin, Michigan, for a UDRA race. Dave qualified second with a 7.60/211.00 (Top Speed) behind Bob Stewart's 7.49/182. In the semifinal, his 7.72/185.94 advanced. He faced Stewart in the final, where his 7.75/178.57 got the victory over Bob's wheelie-prone 8.21/150.; Photo: "Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters" website - MB | The Quad City run was described in a newspaper story as 6.328/197. That would have been the quickest car of the year by four-tenths. We are listing it as 7.328 and assuming a typo. That time aligns with the speed and Don's previous runs. - BP |

Notes: The Shelby Super Snake dragster was a deal in 1968. Shelby sponsored the Prudhomme-driven Baney Special. Don Prudhomme and Lou Baney entered into '68 with hopes to run as well as they had in '67. Ed Pink continued to build the SOHC engines for the team, and Carroll Shelby stepped up with sponsorship. Things started out OK for the team when they went to Carlsbad on January 14 for a best two out of three match against Don Garlits. Prudhomme won the first race with a holeshot 7.01/223.86 over Garlits, who lost a rod on the run and ran 6.95/209. Garlits was done for the day as the damage was too much to repair. Tom McEwen was the backup car for the match, but he too had broken earlier, so the "Snake" soloed to a tire-smoking 7.21/226.70 to win the match. A week later (January 21), he was at Beeline in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. Traction was not at its best, as Don qualified #10 with a 7.43. He ran a 7.56/210.28 in the first round to beat Bob Mayer's quicker 7.44/192. He beat Don Cook in round two and had an easy win in round three (32 car field). Chuck Kurzawa fouled against him in the "Ramchargers" car in the semifinals. This put him into the final against Pete Robinson, but Robinson had broken. So Prudhomme got to single for the win. Prudhomme and Baney had a big decision to make as M&H offered contingency money to racers winning using their tires. Baney was a Goodyear supporter, so the team elected to remain on the Goodyears in the final. Don ran 7.25/221.12 for the victory. At the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #20 in the 32-car show with a 7.19/187.50. In the first round, he picked up to 7.04/222.76 to beat Dave Powers 7.15/214. In the second round, he advanced when Hank Westmoreland fouled. The "Snake" made a rare mistake in round three when he was on his way to a win over Dwight Salisbury, but he pulled the 'chute early, and his 7.14/186.32 lost to Dwight's 7.19. At the Stardust Open at Las Vegas, Prudhomme qualified #10 in the sixteen-car field, but he lost to a holeshot by Tom Larkin in the first round. On March 3, the team was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Don qualified with a 7.07, and he lasted until round two when the dragster pulled two wheelies off the line, and he shut off, losing to McEwen. He lost to McEwen at the next race as well. It was the Bakersfield March Meet, and Don ran 7.11 to qualify #18 in the 32-car field. A first-round 7.22/202.70 lost to Tom's 7.02/202. On April 6, Don was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. In the opening round, both he and his opponent, Joe Lee, had problems and shut off. Lee won their coasting contest. He faced James Warren for a best-of-three match on May 11 at OCIR. The team of Barney and Prudhomme had been undefeated in OCIR's "King of the hill" competition since Nov.18th,'67. They debuted a new Don Long-built car here for their match against Warren. In their first race, James scored first with his 7.16/221 beating the "Snake's" 7.29/222.76. Don came back to even the score with a 7.24/218.44 to beat Warren's tire-smoking 7.74/177. In the deciding race, Prudhomme smoked the tires to a 7.33/176.47 lost to James' winning 7.11/229. Prudhomme made his first Eastern Appearance of the season on June 1 at Maple Grove for a match race against Ron Rivero. It was not a good day for the Ford-powered car as it had problems and lost two straight. Rivero had held the track record at 7.12 coming into this race. In their first match-up, Don's 7.67/153.84 lost to Ron's 7.50/204. In the second race, an ailing 8.02/134.55 lost to the "K&G" fueler's 7.45/193. Prudhomme had lost the match but attempted to come out and make one more run to try and break the track record. He ran a decent 7.30 at only 176.12, but it was nowhere near the record. A couple of days later (June 3), he was at Capitol for another best-of-three match. This time he faced "Big Daddy" Don Garlits. Once again, the SOHC-powered car came out on the losing end. Garlits set a 6.96 track record at 221 while beating Prudhomme's 7.19/185.94 in their first race, and Garlits won two straight with a 6.97/225 in their second race that covered the "Snake's" shut off 9.36/108.56. The car performed much better at New York National on June 9 for the Smokers Meet. Only two cars topped 230 here; one was Prudhomme's, and the other was the "Ramchargers." Don reached the final against Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." Mike got the win with his 6.92/227, beating Don's 6.98/198.22. There was disappointment in their camp when the team failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals. Don had won this race the season before it was held at Bristol. The team even took off their Goodyear rubber and attempted M&H's for a final do-or-die attempt to make the field. After that series of disappointing runs, Don was sure happy to be back in victory lane at OCIR on July 6 for its Nitro Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and Don's 7.26/217.38 qualified #5 (there were no sixes run as Low ET was a 7.05). An opening round 7.57/197.36 beat Bob Mayer's 7.68/205, and in round two, his 7.17/220.58 beat Kelly Brown's 7.45/185 in the "Dean Engineering" car. Another 7.17 at 219.44 in the semifinals beat Tom Toler's 7.58/203 and moved him into the final against Jim Dunn, who had just set Low ET with his semifinal win. But Dunn shut off with problems in the final, and the "Snake" ran 7.22/220.58 for the win. He was also awarded the Mike Sorokin Memorial award at this event. It was an award that was given by and voted by his peers. A week later (July 12), the "Snake" was at Carlsbad for the third NHRA Division Seven race. His 7.22/212.26 lost to eventual winner Gerry Glenn's 7.18/221 in the opening round of eliminations. Things didn't go very well at the PDA Championships held at Lions on July 20. There, a 6.99/223.88 qualified #12 in the sixteen-car field, and in the first round, a fuel pump drive broke, giving his opponent, Chris Karamesines, a solo into round two.; Photo: "Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters" website - MB |
