Notes: Chrysler dominated the Funny Car ranks in '71, and the Chevy campaigners were having a really tough time keeping up. Chadwick was loyal to the Chevrolet cause and refused to switch to a Hemi. His performance was hurting for most of the season, but he turned the quickest time for Chevy-powered cars near the end of the year. The Camaro was built at Don Hardy's shop, and it had a 118" wheelbase. The body was a product of JE Fiberglass. Chadwick and his crew chief, Ray Sullins, put together the 427 Chevy engine. As much as he was a Chevy supporter, Chadwick did run a Mopar rear end with 4.56 gears. He attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but failed to better the 7.30 "bump." Kelly was one of four Funny Cars running at the Amarillo Opener in March. On an early check-out pass, he warmed up with a 7.23. In his first race, he faced Gene Snow, but his 7.53/184.04 lost to Snow's 7.02/209. In his second race, he ran Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max.” Once again, he lost. Another four-car race was run at Southland. In his first race, he faced Gene Snow, who was debuting his new Charger. Chadwick's 7.35/187.11 beat Snow's new car blues at 8.19/128. Unfortunately, the run cost Kelly a rear axle, and he was done for the day. Also, early in the year, Chadwick faced Art Ward driving the "Avenger" Challenger in a best of three match at Cornhusker. He had problems in the first race and shut off on the line, but he came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 7.36 and 7.46 with a best speed of 196.07. He was at Cecil County for the Maryland State Funny Car Championships in May. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.14/190 in the first round, beat Sam Miller's 7.29/207. Chadwick fouled against Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" in the semifinals. But Rowe burnt some pistons and could not run the final, so Chadwick got back into the show. He faced another Chevy-powered car in the final, Bruce Larson's. Kelly ran 7.31/177 for the victory when Larson blew a transmission. Chadwick was running really well at Oswego on August 8 for its Mr. Chevrolet race. He ran three 6.8's to win the event. He was at Bristol on August 29 for the IHRA All-American race, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. Kelly was Low ET qualifier with a 6.734 at OCIR's annual Manufacturer's Meet. He ran several more 6.70s during Saturday night eliminations, but parts breakage kept him from having a chance at making the finals. Won NHRA Division 3 event at Bowling Green on 9/19/71 when Al Marshall crossed the centerline in the final.

Notes: On May 17, Dekker was at Frontier International for the AHRA Grand American race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 7.73/191.89 beat Dale Armstrong's 7.93/188. But in the second round, his 7.85/191.48 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 7.47. He was at Amarillo Dragway on September 13 for the NHRA Division Four final. A 7.72 qualified second to Jake Johnston's 7.46 in the "Blue Max." These two would meet in the final, where Johnston's 7.30 would get the win. John qualified the 'Cuda #12 at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals with a 7.212. Unfortunately, he lost to Gene Snow's 6.95 Low ET blast in the first round. John also ran at the AHRA Grand Nationals at Oklahoma City in 1970.

Notes: Chevrolet was officially out of racing, but independent racers stayed loyal to the mark. Chadwick followed the route Malcolm Durham and others followed when he went with the biggest gun he had, stuffing a '63 Z-11 427 mill into his first-year Chevelle. (The engine was a spare from fellow Southwestern racer Dick Harrell.) The result was a bowtie approximation of Ford's race-ready Thunderbolts. It wasn't an NHRA-legal A/FXer, but close enough for match race purposes. Injectors, fuel, and a lighter car would follow. - RT

Notes: Chuck attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his 7.444/184.76 was good for the tenth alternate spot. He tried again at the Motorcraft Nationals, where his 7.813/177.16 was twelfth alternate. Chuck did better at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals, where he was eighth alternate with a 7.226/190.23. Echmalian skipped several events before appearing at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" with a 7.252/189.47, but a first-round 7.305/189.23 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.15/193. At Pomona for the season-ending World Finals, he really picked up the pace, running a 7.195/191.57 to qualify #7. He ran 7.197 at 190.67 in the first round, but a red light accompanied it, and Lewis Worden got the win at 7.193/191.44.

Notes: Vern ran the first "six" in South Dakota history during qualifying for the third NHRA Division 5 race held at Thunder Valley at Marion, SD, on June 28. His 6.98 led the eight-car field in qualifying. He improved to 6.95/192.30 to beat Brian Budd in the first round, but in the semifinals, he lost a motor and the race when his slowing 7.37 fell to John Wiebe’s 6.82. On July 26, Vern Anderson won NHRA's Division 5 Points race at Donnybrooke International with Low ET and Top Speed coming in the final when his 6.85/223.32 single took the win when Denny Darraugh failed to fire. He also qualified for the NHRA Supernationals with a 6.88, which was good for the #24 spot in the 32-car field. He beat Jim Davis in the first round with a 6.89/213 before losing in round two. | Best NHRA national event times were 6.631/226.13 at the World Finals.

Notes: Won Division 4 in 1970. Woodall was at LaPlace Dragway in April for its Spring Drag Festival. It was an eight-car show, and he set Low ET in qualifying low at 6.80. In the opening round, both he and Richard Tharp smoked the tires, but his 7.15/164.17 beat Tharp's 7.83/132. In the semifinal, his 6.91/191.08 lost to Watus Simpson's 6.86/190. Watus hurt his engine on the run and could not make the final, so Chip got back in on the "break rule." In the final, he faced Chris Karamesines, and Woodall's 7.54/166.35 got the victory. Chip qualified #1 with a 6.66 on May 3 at Dallas International for the Division 4 opener. He beat Larry Brown in the first round with a 7.01/161, and in the semifinal, he beat Ronnie Martin's 6.85 with a motor blowing 6.70/196.93. He was unable to run Bennie Osborn in the final. At the following Division 4 race at Southland Dragway, he set Low ET with a 6.82, but he failed to make the finals. He lost in the first round of the Division 4 race at Oklahoma City when Raymond Beadle's 7.34 beat his off-pace 7.50. In June, the team qualified #6 at the NHRA Springnationals in Dallas with a 6.741/213.27. Chip took a leisurely cruise in round one when Dick Custy broke. He beat Kelly Brown in round two, 6.811/200.00 to 6.98/193. Jim Nicoll got a big holeshot win over Chip in round three; however, 6.78/203 to 6.68/214.
