Notes: Car was nearing completion when the NHRA rulebook legalized tube frames for gas classes; Crandall & Sandberg's 2x3 tube rectangular tube chassis was one of the first in the gasser ranks. Car turned 9.80 on first pass (1969) with fill-in driver Al Tschida. Followed up with an overall win at the Rockford (Ill.) Dragways Gas Coupe Nationals, topping a 64-car field. Regular owner/driver Bruce Crandall then piloted car to A/G class win at the 1969 NHRA Nationals at Indy. Photo is from that event. - RT |

Notes: Jim turned the car into a Funny Car tractor puller and burned it to the ground at an indoor show in Sacramento. He then debuted a new '84 Corvette BB/FC on Easter weekend at Las Vegas in which he survived one of the worst Funny Car crashes I've ever witnessed; the car hadn't even been painted yet. After that, he eventually moved to much safer jet cars. - Bret Kepner |

Notes: At the NHRA Citgo/K-Mart Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Pete qualified #4 with a 7.551/183.26. He would face #12 qualifier Reid Whisnant in round 1 where Pete would red light rather blatantly to give Whisnant the win. The Camaro is newer & different paint than the photo used here. If anyone has a photo, additional info or better numbers for Smith in 1987, please let us know. - Rob McCabe |
