Notes: On May 4, Sam was at National Trail for the NHRA Division 3 race. He ran a first-round 9.11/146.34 to beat Stacy Shields' 9.39/146, but a 9.15 in the semifinal lost to the race's eventual winner Bobby Yowell, at 9.00. In June, he was back at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify. Shortly after, Sam was at Edgewater for the third NHRA Division Three race. His 9.03 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Bob Glidden's 8.86. An opening round 9.12/147.78 beat Bob Morrison, and he took out Floyd Williams in the semifinal. He faced Glidden in the final, and Bob had been running steady eight-second times. Gianino caught a bit of good luck when Glidden broke in the final, and he snatched the victory with a 9.09/149.50. Sam qualified at Indy with a 9.22. His best NHRA national event times were 9.073 at the Gators (# alternate) and 150.75 in a first-round loss at the Summernationals.

Notes: Bob built this 1970 Mustang to take advantage of a weight break for longer wheelbase machines. Set National Record at Pomona Winters at 8.772, then Gainesville at 8.76. The 156.25 was Top Speed of the meet at the Winters. Won Winters with a holeshot 8.79 over Wayne Gapp's 8.78. | After watching the success Gapp and Roush were having with their four-door Maverick, Bob had Don Hardy build him this '70 Mustang for '75. The Mustang was allowed to weigh less than the Pinto due to the NHRA weight breaks for long-wheelbase cars. The first time out for the car was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Bob set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.96/153.84. He then beat Dick Landy in the first round, with an 8.97, followed by a solo 9.29 in round two when Don Nicholson shut off on the line. In the semifinals, a 9.02/150.50 took care of Kevin Rotty. In the final, he faced Wally Booth's Hornet. Booth was off by more than a tenth in eliminations, and it stayed that way in the final. Glidden's 8.99/152.28 beat Wally's 9.12/149. It was a great debut, but it was about to get better. Glidden and family towed to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #2 with an 8.82/154.37 behind Wayne Gapp's "Taxi" at 8.81/154. These two would work their way to the final. Bob beat Pete Kost in the first round with an 8.772/156.25. The ET was a new NHRA record. In round two, he backed it up with an 8.781/153.32 over Nicholson's similar '70 Mustang. A semifinal 8.821/153.84 took out Dave Kanners' 8.90. The two long-wheelbase Fords came to the final, and Bob got a slight holeshot, and his 8.797/154.10 held on for the win over Gapp's 8.781/154. At the IHRA Winternationals, Glidden used his Pinto as IHRA did not have a different weight break for long or short-wheelbase cars. Glidden made it three event wins in a row for the new car when he won the NHRA Gatornationals. He set a new NHRA ET record of 8.760 in qualifying. His speed on the run was 154.63 (Top Speed). Gapp qualified #2, and these two again would work their way into the final. Bob beat Mike Fons' Mopar in the first round, with an 8.96, while a second round 8.86 advanced when Bobby Yowell fouled. In the semifinals, Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Vega, fouled away an 8.89/153, while Glidden sailed into the final with an 8.97/151.77. Bob got a great light in the final while Gapp was late, and Glidden got the victory with an 8.96/152.80 over the Maverick's quicker 8.89 at the same speed. During April, Glidden also debuted a new Mustang II. He had a lot of bad luck with the car and ended up crashing it at Columbus. He was OK, but the car was severely damaged. Because of this, Bob was at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis on April 20 with the '70 Mustang. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.72. He also set Top Speed and won the event, beating Floyd Williams in the final. Bob ran the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 8. He qualified #4 with a 9.02/150.25. Bob's 8.94/151.77 beat Lee Edwards' Camaro in the first round. In round two, he fell off to 9.34 and lost to Roy Hill's 9.13. He was alternating cars as he used a Mustang II at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, yet the following week (June 29), he was back in the '70 Mustang for the third NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.86, and in round one, he also got Top Speed honors with an 8.88/153.58 drubbing of Charlie Reed's 9.18/145. A semifinal 8.90/150.25 beat Stacy Shields' Mustang II and moved Glidden into the final against Sam Gianino. Unfortunately for Bob, the car broke, and Gianino soloed for the win. It was hard to follow Glidden's cars in '75 as he then used the Mustang II at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. I believe the last race Bob used the car at was the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. He blew up an engine during qualifying on Saturday but put a new one in and ran 8.99/153.06 to qualify #7. It was really surprising that he fouled away an 8.97/152.54 against Bert Straus in the opening round. Shortly after this, Bob sold the car to Larry Sengstack.

Notes: Ran 8.879/154.37 debut at 78 Pomona Winters. | John qualified on the "bump" at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with an 8.85/154.90. He had one of the two Mopars that qualified for the field, and in the first round, the two were matched. Hagen got an easy solo and ran 9.02/151.77 to advance when Randy Humphrey broke on his burnout. But in round two, Hagen’s off-pace 9.03/151.77 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.68/155.

Notes: This car replaced the almighty '72 car that was destroyed in a crash. Got a '74 nose in '74; raced until '75 maybe early '76. - JB | A "For Sale" ad placed by Jenkins in a late '74 drag paper advertised the availability of the '73 SRD car with or without engine/driveline for a starting price of $9,000. Jenkins said if purchased complete he would deliver the car to the new owner at a local track "in competitive trim" and conforming to '75 NHRA rules. - RT | Jenkins became the first to lose with an eight second run, 8.91 to 8.96 to Wayne Gapp. Jenkins received an invalid 8.64, 8.647, and 8.90 times at Ontario. - Danny White | Bill Jenkins would never have as successful season as he had had in '72. But having "Grumpy Jenkins" at your track was sure to draw a crowd. The '73 season was labeled the "year of the Fords" as the weight breaks favored the 351 Pinto combination. Jenkins was still tough and he was still the top Chevy in Pro Stock. He started the '73 season at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. His 9.53/144.92 qualified #9 and that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Ronnie Sox. Bill had quite a snooze on the line in their race as his 9.25/146.34 lost to Sox's 9.40/145. The NHRA Winternationals at Pomona was mainly remembered for the rain. It took three weekends to finally complete the race. Bill qualified #3 in the 32 car field with a 9.42/148.76. He backed up the speed for a new NHRA record. Eliminations did not go so well for the "Grump.” He beat Sonny Bryant in the opening round with a 9.54/147, but in the second round, he got out of shape against Bill Bagshaw and shut down to a 10.12/109 loss. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 9.15/147.05. But in the opening round, his front brakes locked up and his front tire smoking 13.96 lost to Paul Blevins' 9.37/148. His team did get the award for "best appearing crew" so they didn't leave empty handed. In May, he was at National Trail for the second NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 9.33 and in the first round, set Low ET and Top Speed with a 9.21/148.27. He lost in the semifinals. A couple of weeks later, he won the AHRA Grand American race at Dragway 42. Bill qualified #1 and he beat Arlen Vanke in the final. In June, he was at Maple Grove for the USRT event. He broke against Don Grotheer in the first round, but during qualifying, had reset both ends of the track record with a 9.14/147.78. He had won the NHRA Springnationals the year before, but the competition improved for '73. Bill "only" qualified #13 with a 9.49. Only two Vegas qualified and they were paired together in the first round. Blevins had been pushing hard to displace the "Grump" as the #1 Chevy in Pro Stock. But Bill took him down a notch here as in their race, his 9.46/145.86 put Paul's 9.51/145 back on the trailer. Unfortunately, Jenkins’ 9.48/145.63 in the second round lost to eventual winner Don Carlton's 9.45/146. Shortly after that, he was at Century 21 Raceway in Denver for the AHRA Springnationals. Only ten cars showed for the hoped for sixteen-car field. Jenkins' 9.86 qualified #2 behind Dick Landy's 9.76. These two would work their way into the final. Bill ran 9.70, 9.66 (Low ET), and 9.69. Landy’s best in eliminations was 9.67 so the final was close. But Bill fell off to a 9.87/137 and lost to Landy's 9.68/141. Things went well for Jenkins at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Almost 50 cars showed up to attempt to qualify for the 32 car field. Bill’s 9.14/150.25 qualified #2. But during eliminations, he improved by more than a tenth. An opening round 9.02/151.00 beat alternate Ron Manchester. Another 9.02/150.25 beat Wally Booth's AMC effort at 9.32/144. Sox's 9.20/147 fell to the Vega's 9.06/150.00 in round three and yet another 9.02/150.50 stopped Blevins' 9.20/148 in the semifinals. He faced the strong Mopar of Butch Leal in the final. Beside Jenkins, Leal was the only other car in the 9.0s with a 9.07 best. But Bill ran a consistent 9.02/150.25 to take the victory over Leal's 9.13/151. Jenkins' 9.02 was Low ET. Bill received a crazy 8.640 ET at the Supernationals that was in no way legit. His top NHRA national event speed was 151.77. The 3 finish number indicates the 1972 world championship in pro stock. Back then, NHRA assigned 1 and 2 to the top finishers in top fuel and pro stock.

Notes: Warren spent most of his time this season in IHRA competition. He didn't run at the first few NHRA events but was at Columbus in June for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.82 (speed unknown) qualified #14. Andy Mannarino fouled against him in the opening round, and Warren advanced with an 8.888/150.50. He fouled against Larry Lombardo in the second round and ran 9.061/150.75. That was WJ's only NHRA national event this year. We formerly listed 8.63/157.34 times for this year, but that did not occur at an NHRA national event. We need to confirm.

Notes: SS/AA Convert. Won Irwindale event on 3/71 with a 9.99/136.98. Did he run a Hurst? Ran 9.83 at St. Louis. | Started the year by setting Low ET at the Lions Grand American meet. A second Round 10.14 beat Dick Landy, and in the semifinal, Bill Bagshaw beat his 10.08 with a 9.91. He followed this up with a runner-up finish on February 21 at Beeline for the second AHRA event, the Winternationals. He qualified eighth with a 10.02 and advanced past the first-round when Bagshaw fouled. He had another easy pass in round two when Landy missed a shift against him. Then in the semifinal, Ronnie Sox fouled away a 9.75/141, moving Lambeck's 10.02/138.24 into the final. Arlen Vanke beat Bob in the final with a 9.85/140 over his 10.26/137.61. He qualified ninth in the 32 car field with a 10.03/137.82 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But he lost to Sox in round two. He ran well at Fremont on March 14 for the Northern Nationals. A 9.87/140 qualified #3, but he failed to reach the finals. A week later (March 20), he won the Irwindale Potpourri race. Bob set Low ET at 9.99, and he beat Don Lorentzen's Camaro in the final. Another win came at the Seattle Northwest National Open. There he set track records of 9.95/138.67 before beating Ken Van Cleave's 10.17 in the final with a 10.02. The "outdated" Dart was serving Lambeck pretty well, and he continued to win with it. In May, he won the NHRA Division 6 race at Deer Park. Once again, he stopped Van Cleave in the final. A 10.18/133.33 picked up the win for Bob.

Notes: Also ran 9.04 at Rockingham 1973 and 9.07/148.51 at Sacramento. Landy won the final OCIR All-Pro race of '73, stopping Butch Leal in the final with track records of 9.17/149.00. Set 9.07 AHRA national record at Fremont and won the AHRA World Championship. The car had to be rebuilt due to a towing accident that occurred on the way to Columbus. | Dick lasted until round two at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.34/148.51, and he beat Joe Satmary's 9.79/140 in the first round, with a 9.39/145.39. He lost to Ronnie Sox in the next round. He was at OCIR for its third All-Pro event. Landy qualified #1 with a 9.32 and picked up to a 9.27 (Low ET) at 146 while beating Sonny Bryant's Camaro in the semifinals. He also got Top Speed at 147.29, but in the final, he had problems and slowed to 10.35/101, which lost to Butch Leal's 9.44/146. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified with a 9.48/148.02 and a 9.70/145 advanced past round one when Jim Baker fouled. Dick got a single in round two when Mike Fons failed to show. He lost to eventual winner Don Nicholson in round three (32 car field) when his 9.60/145.86 came up second best to "Dyno Don's" 9.45/145 in his Pinto. As mentioned, he set both ends of the track record at OCIR at the final All-Pro race. Landy prevented Leal from making a clean sweep of the series. In March, he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Landy qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.16/150.25. He soloed with a 9.15/148.97 in the first round, when Monty Mantovan's Camaro broke. A 9.10/150.25 in round two beat Bob Lambeck, while a 9.07 (Low ET) at 149.75 took out Ken Van Cleave's Duster in the semifinals. Dick scored the win in the final by running 9.12/150.75 to drop Huff's 9.32/147. In April, he was at Tulsa for AHRA's Grand American race. He qualified #1 with a 9.25, but he failed to reach the finals. A few days later, he was at Sacramento for the California State Championships. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a 9.07/149.76. He went on to win the event with a 9.17/148.52 in the final that stopped Bill Bagshaw's 9.37/146. He had another good showing at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Landy qualified #2 with a 9.04/152.28 (Top Speed) behind Don Carlton's record-breaking 8.98. These two would work their way through the field to meet in the final. Dick started his march by running 9.11/148.76 to beat Don Grotheer's 9.34/146. He then beat John Brumley in round two before facing Sox in the semifinals. These two had a good race, with Dick's 9.08/149.25 coming out on top over Ronnie's close 9.11/148. In the final, Carlton ran another 8.98/150 to outrun Landy's 9.09/149.25.

Notes: Larry Lombardo was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals in January. He qualified #1 with an 8.88, and in the first round, he soloed with an 8.92/153.84 (Top Speed). In round two, his 8.84/153.58 beat former Jenkins team driver Ken Dondero's 9.10/151. He got his first "real" race in the semifinals when Lombardo's 8.86/153.06 beat Lee Hunter's quicker 8.84/150. Larry faced Warren Johnson in the final, and he improved to 8.82 (Low ET) at 153.52 to win over Johnson's 8.99/153. It was an excellent way to start the year, but it got even better the following week at Pomona. An 8.72/159.01 qualified #2 behind Don Nicholson's 8.70/158. These two would work their way into the final. Larry set a new NHRA speed record in the opening round with his 8.74/159.29 that beat Hunter. In the final, "Dyno" fouled, running 8.77/157, while Lombardo set Low ET at 8.610/158.73 while winning his second big race of the year. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Larry qualified #3 with an 8.79 behind Nicholson and Wally Booth. A first-round 8.83 beat Andy Mannarino and an 8.75 in round two stopped Johnson's 8.93. But in the semifinals, Nicholson got some "revenge" from Pomona as Larry ran a tenth slower than "Dyno." He took and chance on the tree and fouled. The team then went to Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 with an 8.89/155.17. He easily made it into the final, where he faced Dondero in the "Gapp and Roush" Pinto. An 8.82 got the victory over Dondero's 9.00. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener on May 8. Lombardo's 8.64 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Iaconio's 8.59. These two would meet in the final, with Frank taking the win. The two switched roles at the next NHRA Division Two race at Cayuga on May 22. There Lombardo picked up another victory. They could not race at Baton Rouge for the rain-delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals as it conflicted with the AHRA Gateway Nationals. At St. Louis, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.77/155.98 in qualifying #1. Once again, he easily made it into the final to face Dondero again. Larry ran an easy 8.87/138.89 to win over the Ford driver's 9.35/145. At the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.68/157.06 qualified #2 behind Wally Booth's AMC at 8.64/155. An opening round 8.79/155.44 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.92/153. But in round two, his 8.81/153.84 lost to Iaconio's 8.76/154. Another win came at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals on July 3. Larry set Low ET in qualifying at 8.83. He ran times of 8.92 and 8.90 to reach the final. Another 8.83/155.60 (Top Speed) won over Bobby Marriott. Don Campanello lost to Larry in the final at the NHRA Division One race at Maryland International. Back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Lombardo ran 8.75/156.79 to qualify #5. He improved to 8.62/159.01 (Top Speed) in the opening round to beat Roy Hill. In round two, his 8.66/156 beat low qualifier Bob Glidden. Another 8.66/158 beat Andy Mannarino in the semifinal. He faced Iaconio in the final, and Larry took the victory with an 8.68/158.73 to beat Frank's close 8.68/156. He also stopped Iaconio in the final at the fourth NHRA Division One race at Maple Grove on July 23. Lombardo qualified #1 and set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.58/157.89. A final round of 8.62/157.61 got him the win. Shortly after this(July 31), "Team Jenkins" was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. Lombardo set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with an 8.71/160.42. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 8.83/156.29, and another 8.83 at 159.01 in the semifinals beat Rich Smith's 9.30/149. He faced Dondero. But the Monza broke and slowed to 19.87/39.07 while Ken got the win with an 8.92/153. Breakage also came into play in the final at the NHRA Grandnationals. Larry qualified #4 with an 8.70/156.79. An opening round 8.75/154.90 took out Andy Mannarino's 8.92/151. A great 8.62/156.52 in the semifinal beat Warren Johnson's 8.80/154 and gave him lane choice over Glidden. However, the car broke, and Bob ran 8.63/156 for the win while Larry rolled across the line at 10.12/93.55. Larry won the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown over Frank Iaconio. He was runner-up to Bob Glidden at Sanair and made it to the semis at Indy (in Ronnie Manchester's car). Won NHRA Winternationals. Won NHRA Phoenix Winter Open over Richie Zul at 8.80/154.37. Larry ran 8.610 at Pomona, 8.75 at Gainesville, 8.68 at Columbus, 8.62 at Englishtown. Did Larry run 8.525 in this car this year (at a Divisional event, perhaps)? Removed that ET until we get confirmation.

Notes: Went back to the Mustang II in 1980. | Don qualified #2 at the AHRA Winternationals behind Lee Shepherd and the two finished that way, with Shepherd beating Nicholson in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, "Dyno's" best of 8.75/155.44 (second alternate) failed to qualify. He made the show at the NHRA Gatornationals, qualifying #13, but he lost to Kevin Rotty in the first round. In April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Don ran a best of 8.64 in qualifying which was first alternate in the eight-car show. On May 4, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.66/155.17. In round one, an 8.65/155.44 beat Morris Johnson, but in the semifinals, his 8.73/155.44 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.51/158 (Low ET & Top Speed). At the NHRA Springnationals, his 8.82/153.84 qualified #13 and in round one, he beat Alban Gauthier. In the second round, his Mustang II broke on the line advancing eventual winner Bob Glidden.
